It's an adventure fantasy page turner that will be sure to keep you reading from start to finish.
A copy of this was sent to me by the author through my bookstagram (@CJDsCurrentRead—shameless plug....) and it definitely took me a little bit to get to it, but I find that I was not disappointed whatsoever.
This book introduced some cool ideas, both in terms of world building, and also in the sense of a magic system. The world is both futuristic and primitive, in an apocalyptic-then-refreshed world. And the magic is almost superhero-y powers, but they all pull from natural things. The world to me had an epic fantasy feel to it with its open spaces, and then a more steam punky-type feel for the city area (think Gideon the Ninth-esque...) that I really enjoyed.
I feel like this book had a lot of heart and it has the guts to be even expounded upon into a full novel if he wanted to. All of the preliminary work is there to be bulked up, but it also functioned well as an action packed novella just the same.
Personally a 4/5* for me, I’d definitely read more, or reread this one one day.
“Legacy” introduces Xolani, Raine, and their two children (Keon and Niya). Having moved to the country and away from their troubles, their peace is disturbed when a terrible dream rips into their serene existence. Overall, I enjoyed this novella. It is fast-paced and does a good job in filling the few pages with character details that enhance the story. Xolani, Raine, and their friend Rashid each have distinctive characteristics which make them stand out and intriguing. However, there is little development for the kids and the villains. I did like the background descriptions (just enough to allude to what happened without giving details) and the ties to family and the past. The full blog post can be found at heatherlbarksdale.com
I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
** The author of this novel, Jay Reace gave me an electronic copy in exchange for an honest review**
Jay Reace is the author of the fantasy adventure, Legacy: A Scion Quest Series. Set on earth after the last world war, this story focuses around Xolani, his wife Raine and their two kids. Xolani has disturbing visions. While being plagued by haunting visions, Xolani’s past enters his life once more. Now what was a threat to just him, threatens the wellbeing of his family as well.
The world of Legacy is interesting. Set in our world after the last world war, people retreated to bunkers for safety. During that time, the earth healed and mother nature blossomed. After leaving the bunkers, some people had this harmonious relationship where nature and technology coexisted. Others felt they would be better off without technology and stick to their old ways. I really enjoyed this balancing act of to two very clashing trains of thoughts. This aspect really kept me interested. Reace does a great job at exploring this.
When a story has a large amount of characters, some get lost in the shuffle, till the author needs to move the plot along. Reace makes sure each character has a role to play and isn’t there to just take up space. His outstanding writing brings the world and the obstacles characters face to life with his high regard for detail.
I want to shine a light on Reace’s over all writing talent. He’s writing makes it easy for you to visualize what is going on in the story. The pacing of the story was great. An obvious example of that would be the power structuring. Without giving too much away, the characters have powers. You are not starting off with world ending powers. We see the characters do low powered stuff, but things get fun as the story continues. It’s a great build it to the more exciting stuff. Not only with this but with the overall story, Reace does a superb at building tension and excitement.
This book is a great addition to anyone’s library. It has great humorous moments sprinkled throughout the book to make you laugh. High-impact action to make you root for the good guy, or bad guy if that’s your thing. A relationship between a family and how they come together. This story is rich in amazing fantasy elements. Not only would I recommend this story to lovers of fantasy. I would also recommend this book for individuals that are looking to get into fantasy. I look forward to seeing what is next in this book series.
I really liked this book. The fact that it had short chapters made it so enjoyable to read, and I fell in love with the post-apocalyptic world that the author had built, as well as all of the characters and their unique powers. I love how the characters continue to be humorous despite being in the middle of a battle.
I had just began reading fantasy this year, so I was so relieved to find this story easy to follow. It’s fast paced, and I loved all of the action.
I wish this book had just been a little longer, and that we found out what happened to Xolani’s mother at the end. Overall, I highly recommend this book, and am excited for the sequel (if there is one).
I fell in love with the family instantly. I honestly couldn’t remember the last time I read a book with the immediate family as the main characters. It was refreshing to read and I loved their dynamic.
I also enjoyed the story. It is fast-paced and full of action, but it still added slower moments as well. I wish it was longer!
Lastly, I liked the writing. Everything made sense and I was never confused.
Overall, I recommend this to fans of futuristic fantasy lovers!
My wife and I have a free online magazine called Appalachia Bare (www.appalachiabare.com) and we met Mr. Reace at the Rose Glen Literary Festival in Sevierville, TN, in February. I picked up a copy of Legacy there and have very much enjoyed the book. It was such a delight meeting him and his wife, discussing his fascinating new fantasy world and the book. I've published a full review on our site and it can be found here: https://www.appalachiabare.com/legacy....
I highly recommend Legacy to anyone interested in a fresh take on fantasy.
