Honestly, I am getting really frustrated by book ratings, especially on Amazon. This author and book has a nearly 5 star rating on Amazon, so I bought it. However, I feel like it is entirely undeserved.

In my opinion, there are two three major flaws in this story, and several smaller ones.

* First, this is a time travel story. However, very little is made about the glaring differences that would certainly exist between a modern woman, and the early 1800's in Dodge city. Several people wander through the scene, when this woman first appears in stiletto heels, and only one character thinks (not speaks) that her shoes look like weapons. Her language draws little comment, and her modern sensitivities seem unaffected by necessity of having to adjust to 19th century hardships. We never hear her complain, or her her insecurities about how she should wear her hair, what about bathing, what about adjusting to the food, etc.

* There are also several glaring missing details. Upon showing up in the past, she is abruptly tossed into jail...where she spends some time. She never has to pee, or eat, or bathe. In fact throughout the story, these things rarely even pop up - other than a few meals that she is provided with. Also, upon finding another time traveler, she is so excited that she doesn't even ask where or when he came from. Little things like that. Another: she finally procured "sensible footwear". Well, what does that mean? What kind? What did they look like? Did she get blisters? Miss her Nikes? Heaven's! This had great potential, but the missing details meant that this entire aspect of the story missed the mark.

* Finally, and blaringly, is the conclusion of the story. Not only is it rushed...it is ridiculous! I admit I was able to look past other plot failings and enjoy the story up until the end. Before going back to her own time, the hero dies. However, after finding herself back in the future, she meets him - reincarnated and with most of his memories intact - in a museum parking lot. Upon finding him, in this new reincarnation, she takes absolutely no time to adjust to the idea...she is just simply in love immediately, and gets in the car with him where they drive off only to stop at a costume store to pick up Old West costumes to spice up their sex life. What?! Come on. Again, great missed opportunity for a more realistic believable ending that we readers could have invested in.

Regardless of how much 'success' this reader has had with other books, after this read I would not read her again...except that based on the inflated ratings of this book, I actually bought another of hers. So, I guess I will give her one more try, but I'm honestly not expecting much.

A time travel Western!!! Ke-wl. I’m guessing here, but I think this one is one of the the books in the new Amazon Line that Connie Brockway is part of and can I just say I am So In with this? I’m glad I have an i-pad with a Kindle app so I can read these books. A Western Time Travel isn’t a trope you see very often. Since I really like both, that’s why I was sold on this book right away.

In order to enjoy a time travel book, you have to be willing to suspend belief more that say a contemporary or romantic suspense or even some historical. Luckily I’m able to do that pretty well so I was able to enjoy this book quite a bit.

Jessica is a modern day heroine thrust back into the old West. Of course at first she has a hard time believing what’s happened. I found her reaction quite believable. I enjoyed her as a heroine. She was smart and intelligent and wasn’t intimidated by her situation.

And Truman Wade, our hero was just plain yummy-licious. A combination gunslinger AND a sheriff; one who wears spurs and a gun; one who has blue eyes and is strong confident, hunky and a sense of humour is very hard to resist. He doesn’t know what to make of Jessica, or Junebug as he calls her. She’s not like any woman he’s met before. He’s attracted to her but knows she is keeping secrets and is reluctant to get involved despite being very attracted to her, in case those secrets will compromise his job as sheriff. And Jessica is very attracted to Truman but she is also reluctant to get involved since she is determined to return to her family in her own time.

The resolution to this book was a bit unexpected and had me almost weepy. Not to worry though, it is a romance and has a HEA.

Amazon knew what they were doing when they put this one on my recommend list. I really enjoyed it. And at that price? My advice is to give it a try. It says on the site that this book will be available in print in August.

My Truman

I enjoyed this book. The heroine, Jessica was very strong and plucky. Accidentally time traveling to 1881 Dodge City, Kansas wear jeans with a zipper (gasp), red stilettos and a leather jacket, she immediately drew the attention of the Sherriff. Sherriff Truman Wade is so yummy. A quick draw with his six shooter, and an earnest heart, he is the stuff women's fantasies are made of. Truman is gorgeous, wears a Stetson and can whistle for his horse, Thunder, who will come running. Why is that so hot? Oh, I know, because if the horse is loyal to his man, that means all fingers point to the man being a good one, and the horse being a great one.

Jessica soon finds herself in a heap a trouble. Accused of killing Left Hand Lou, she gets put in jail, then eventually a financial reward for killing him. Gotta love the old west! Lol. But is all this jail time just a way for Truman to keep her close? I love that the town nicknames her "Junebug Jess". Jess hates Junebugs and was trying to kill on that was caught in her hair when Left Hand Lou fell dead at her feet. When she explains that she was trying to kill a Junebug, the town thinks she's whackadoo because they've never heard of Junebugs. Well, that and she keeps telling everyone she was in a car accident and needs to use the phone. She thinks she's landed in the middle of a reality show where they take people and make them live in another era of time for all of us to laugh at.

Jess is quick though and tries to assimilate. But forgets to do things like tie her hair up, which that alone gets Truman's blood pumping. Their's is a great love story.

It has a HEA, but not one I expected. I was hoping for something a little different. But it was still great.

Jessica Delaney after flipping her car finds herself transported into the past. The Dodge city of 1881 is not in any way recognisable to her. When she’s mistaken for an outlaw and comes to the interest of the local sheriff her dilemma intensifies. Soon Jessica and Wade are fighting a red hot attraction but with both of them keeping their secrets close to their chests is their tentative new beginning doomed before it even gets started.

Taken by the cowboy is a quick read and though it was mostly enjoyable it wasn’t incredibly taxing and felt a bit light on insights and descriptive language. The world immersion wasn’t the best and lacked basic expansion. I also found the characters themselves a bit one dimensional and I wasn’t convinced of the chemistry between Jessica and Truman. In fact, I found their connection disappointing. I also found the ending a bit rushed and not very satisfying either though there is a HEA just a bit of a strange one.

I like my historicals rich in detail and this just didn’t deliver that vibe for me. The main characters here are mostly likeable but there’s also a lot of stereotyping as well. I think the best way to explain it is that all of the bones of the story were all there but it hadn’t been padded out enough and was then light on all the little details that make you believe your in the past. Overall though if you looking for an easy story that won’t tax too much this should work.

Jessica Delaney aka Junebug Jess is transported back in time to 1881 when she is in a car accident. While trying to figure out where she really is a dead body drops in front of her and the people of Dodge believe she shot and killed the outlaw, Lou. Truman Wade is the sheriff and arrests Jessica until he can get the facts.

The plot had a lot of potential but it lacked something. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. There is a lot of running and hiding as the baddies are trying to kidnap/kill/or worse Jessica. A bit of mystery as to who actually killed the outlaw and what it is that the baddies are looking for. It was an okay read and some parts better than others.

My Thoughts:
This was a really sweet story. Not syrupy sweet...but heartwarmingly so. If you're looking for a steamy cowboy romance, sorry...this is not the book for you.

Jessica Delaney, a 21st century woman, is plunged back in time to the 1800s where she meets, is arrested by, and falls in love with the sheriff, Truman Wade.

Upon Jessica's immediate arrival into the Dodge City of the past she is accused of the murder of an outlaw, Left Hand Lou. She is immediately arrested by the gorgeous Sheriff Truman Wade who she can't seem to take her eyes off of. Truman is also instantly drawn to Jessica. He "arrests" her even though there is no need to because a reward has been offered for Lou’s death or capture. While she is imprisoned, Jessica and Truman trade barbs while actually flirting with each other. Truman knows Jessica has a secret and he does everything in his power to find out what it is. But during his investigation his feelings toward her start to grow. But Lou's band of outlaws come back and starts terrorizing Jessica for what they think she has taken from the slain outlaw. Now, the big gorgeous sheriff makes it his mission to protect Jessica...with his life if need be.

There are a few moments in the story where I was thinking, "Oh come on. Really?...you all are going to do this NOW?!?!" The first moment occurs when Jessica and Truman are being held by the band of outlaws that want the combination to the bank safe. The outlaws have ensconced them in a bunker until their leader can come to question them. And by question I mean hurt one until the other one talks. Jessica, who has only been in town for a few days at this point, fervently announces that she loves Truman and she wants him to make love to her...at that moment. Really Jess...couldn't have picked a better time to do that, huh? Of course Truman willingly obliges her and they survive that harrowing moment. Joy!

My second "oh come on" moment occurs when Truman had to arrest Jessica...again...because she was suspected of murdering the local drunk who harassed her since her arrival. He was harmless but a nuisance. The town is incensed that Junebug Jess (her outlaw moniker) has killed yet another person in their town. There is a very real possibility that the town will lynch her. Of course, her protector, Truman can't allow this to happen because he has now determined that he loves her too. He is going to run away with her and become fugitives together. During alllllllll of this, they are once again "getting it on". Really...priorities much?

Fast forwarding through the story, the outlaws are apprehended and everything is right with the world...or is it?!?! We discover that the outlaws are not the true source of all the death being laid at Jessica's feet. There are others colluding to rob the bank. During an encounter with them, Truman is shot and killed and Jessica is somehow thrust forward in time. Jessica awakes to find that she is in a hospital room with her parents...heartbroken and pregnant. Pregnant? But didn't she have an IUD? Dang time travel done screwed with the girls’ contraceptive! But Jessica is remotely thrilled that she has carried a piece of Truman through time with her.

In her grief, Jessica goes to the library to see if she can find out any information on Truman. And sadly, she does when she reads an article proclaiming his death. She is heartbroken all over again. But during her library investigation Jessica discovers that there is someone else who is also looking into the details of that time period. Dr. Jake Spencer contacts Jessica and requests that she meet with him. Jessica cautiously (optimistic) agrees to meet with Jake. She is positively shaken when she first spies him. He is the spitting image of Truman, swagger and all, except that his eyes are green and not the beautiful blue that she remembered. Jake asks Jessica some questions about where she was during her missing time and announces to her that he knows about her time travel and her relationship with Truman. Why?............wait for it..........because he is Truman *duh duh daaaaah duh*. There is some mumbo jumbo about Truman's spirit being in Jake and his memories flood Jake as if they are his own. And tada you have a melding of the two souls...TruJake :). Jessica is overwhelmed and in shock but once flooded by the timeless love she feels for a man she thought she had lost. And they live happily ever after.

I love history so the flashback to the past was outstanding. This story was enjoyable and interesting. Truly deserving of the four star rating.

This book drew me in from the first page! I haven't read a lot of time travel romance books but now I'm thinking maybe I should put more on my list! First we meet Jessica Delaney. She is a modern day woman who is in the middle of dealing with her own grief and loss when she is in a car accident and the impossible happens....she is catapulted back in time. She finds herself in the wild west. 1800's style!!
This is where her adventure begins. She meets sheriff Wade Truman under circumstances that are less then ideal. It seems she has taken on the name Junebug Jess and within hours of her arriving, she has the reputation of a rough and rowdy gunslinger. Truman is one smokin HOT lawman! ♥ He has a certain cowboy charm that would make any modern day woman swoon. He seem to be dangerous, mysterious and ohh soo sensual!
Truman and Jess both feel a connection to each other. And before you know it, they set the pages ablaze with their unstoppable passion. *winks*
This was truly a fun and entertaining read for me. I absolutely love Truman and Jessica. I loved watching their attraction and trust grow throughout the book. Jessica is a bit unusual in Truman's eyes. And he knows that she is keeping something from him. But he feels a fierce protectiveness towards her and finds himself doing everything he can to keep her out of harms way. Truman is hard around the edges and Jessica knows he doesn't want to get too close. But she can see the soft, caring and loving side of him and she can't seem to put out the fire that burns for him.
If you like time travel themed books, then this is a great book to pick up!! It's a branding hot read with an incredibly scorching hot Hero ;) It's fun and entertaining and it will keep you flipping the pages until there are no more left!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!!

Mechanically written and the extreme details could have been edited to make the story flow better. For me, this was a "B" book. The author has potential, but the dialogue was too "scripted" for me to say anything more positive. The plot was typical, and had absolutely no surprises.

The main characters, Wade Truman and Jessica Delaney, lacked depth. The emotion was missing which kept me on the outside of the book, not really all that interested in the story, and glad when it ended. It felt like the plot was a "make it up as it went."

Not bad enough to stop reading, but nothing special, either.

This was a cute little romance. However, it had me rolling my eyes in some places cause Jessica would go from being sassy and brave to being secretive and almost whiny about wanting to go home and protesting her innocence of murder (which she was). I had no clue how they were going to get their happily ever after, so I was pleasantly surprised by what happened at the end when Jessica came back to the future.

You know sometimes you get a book knowing it'll be ridiculous and flawed and definitely not the greatest read but you kind of know you'll enjoy reading it anyway? Well that was this book for me. It was ridiculous, I mean a woman travelling back to the 1800s and falling for a cowboy? And her managing not to get herself killed her convince herself or others she's not insane? Yeah, I don't think so. But I had fun reading. It passed and evening and I can't grumble too much.

It was flawed. I mean, there are so many questions about the historical accuracy of this which I want to question. Why did no one ask why Jessica spoke strange? Why did no one feel even slightly concerned that she was unescorted and wondering around in trousers? I mean I know it's the wild west but even so! And how was she so accepting of time travel as an explanation? I wouldn't accept that too easily.

My other issue is the romance was quite sudden. I expected it but there was no real build up they were both listing for each other as soon as they set their eyes on one another. I like the tension to build first, you know?

I did enjoy the romance once I got over the slightly rushed aspect of it. It was just plain old fun. It was far-fetched and that ending led to few more questions from me but I've read worse ending for sure. Many a person who has seen Outlander and is enjoying the time travel romance genre will probably end up picking this up. I think if you're just expecting some ridiculous fun then this will be just the ticket.

I've read plenty of cowboy/ outlaw romances. I've read books dealing with time traveling as well. However, I've never read a story where the two genres were put together. For me, this was a nice "outside of the box" story of the two genres. I was also happy to find the Hero's name,Truman, that I haven't come across, as of to date, for the leading male. That was refreshing,to read a name that isn't common, like so many other book leading males. Hats off to the author for giving me a bit of an original story and a new Hero's name to read about.

With all of that being said, I honestly enjoyed this story. I needed something different and something not so repetitive. This story did that for me. It was a great fast paced, dual points of view, happy ending, cowboy romance that I honestly didn't feel any cheesiness with. I really liked that fact that there was barely a curse word to skim over and that the steamy scenes weren't overly done or overly detailed.

I really loved that the heroine, Jessica, was not a whiner, crier, timid or passive leading lady. She was who she was and that's what you got. Even if she got upset about something, she didn't live in her head about it or cry. When she did cry, those were the moments I cried with her, as those were a few sad moments where any real person would cry. I loved Jessica. She was perfect and I wish more heroines were like her. She acted like a real woman probably would act like in certain situations. She felt normal and real.

I loved Truman. What a hunky man! :) He wasn't an alpha bossy male like every other leading male out there is in books lately. He was protective, had a killer smile, he had his demons to deal with, he's the local sheriff and he was just over all a good guy who learned to let down his walls and finally let a woman in. He had his brooding moments but he didn't act like a complete jerk all the time and he knew when to let go of things or apologize when needed.

I was so caught up in this book that I only put it down when I passed out while reading it. I was wholly invested in this story and in the characters. I loved Angus, Wendy, Jake and Deputy Dempsey. Some had smaller roles, but nevertheless, I liked the secondary characters. I was happy to see Angus have his happy ending as well.

I liked that I was able to guess who was responsible for killing off two characters as well.

I loved that the prologue and ending came back full circle as well as the connection between Truman and Jake. Although, that connection was easy to figure out right away.

Lastly, I loved how this was set in the Wild West and Present days. I loved the outlaw aspect of if and how Truman and Jessica meet. And I loved Jessica's nickname: Junebug Jess.

Actually the last thing and certainly not the least thing is: I LOVE the cover of this book. Definitely a nice image to picture while reading about Truman Wade.

3/5; 3 stars; B

This was a sweet and enjoyable romance. Time travel can be pretty tricky to pull off and and I'd say the author did a good job. I wish she had fleshed out the ending a bit more but, still, it was fine. I don't think I've read anything else by Julianne MacLean but I liked her style enough to check out her other works.

Julianne MacLean's writing really leaves something to be desired. It's flat. Uninspired and uninspiring. She seems to delight in just taking the formula and throwing in some stock characters and dialogue. I was bored. Which was kind of sad because I enjoyed the twist at the end. I thought it was cool...so this story in the hands of a more competent writer could have been awesome.

I've enjoyed other books by Ms. MacLean's but this one doesn't hit the mark. I really like time travel romances but the one thing I like was missing in this book. The adaptation to the new environment - whether it be traveling back in time or into the future - the event should present a great shock to the time traveler as this is something he or she has never imagined before and cannot (should not) be able to shrug off like it's nothing.

In this case Sheriff Truman Wade thinks Jessica Delaney's hiding something. That's it. No thinking how strange her attire is (and those heels!), how she talks or even what she's talking about (cars and cell phones). Everyone in this rough and tumble western town just blows it off like she's not doing or saying anything bizarre. This is my favorite part of time travel stories because it allows the reader to really get to know the protagonists which is sadly missing in this story.

And don't even get me started about that lame ass ending.

If I could give 2.5 stars I'd do it but only because the first few opening chapters and the two at the end really got my attention. Everything else inbetween was lacking, as if it was written by a new novelist who hadn't learned how to strengthen the novel's plot line. In short, it felt it was written by a beginner. To me, this was surprising since I'd read several books by Julianne MacLean before and never felt this way. Perhaps because the books I'd read before were in the The American Heiress Series by Harlequin instead of whatever series this book was first published under. I don't consider myself a prude but it seemed that nearly every other page there was always a constant reminder to the reader of how handsome the hero was, how sexy, how sinuous were his forearms, his thighs, his...whatever, you get the idea. I certainly did and it grew more than a little boring trying to read through all that nonsense just to find out how the lovers got reunited through that time tunnel. This must have been one of MacLean's earlier attempts at writing. As I said before, she definitely had a gift at the beginning and at the end (though the beginning was the stronger of the two); it's just that the middle was meh.

MAN! I read this book in a day, obviously having a hard time putting it down! I wasn't sure at first what exactly to expect from this book. I certainly had no idea it was a time travel romance but that added such a uniqueness to the story!

Basically, a young woman is in a terrible car accident, and when she wakes up, finds herself in 1881. Shortly thereafter she's finds herself in an even more tight spot when she's brought in for questioning in a murder she didn't commit. Enter sheriff Truman!

I loved the romance and the whole aspect of finding a destiny across time. It was well written and so much more than I thought it'd be. If there was one thing I would have liked to see more of it would have been the "fish out of water" aspect and how Jessica dealt with that. But that aside, this was a wonderful ride that kept me entertained and intrigued the whole time. There's something to be said for a romance that makes you wonder, "how the HELL can this possibly work out?".

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good love story about a couple who came together against all odds.

This was my first time reading this author, but it won't be my last!

I got this book as part of an anthology a long time ago, and this is the only one I've read. And I've read it many times.
I absolutely love this book.
Jessica is thrust into the past and due to inconvenient circumstances, is blamed for something she didn't do.
Enter Truman Wade, a sexy Sheriff hell bent of finding out as much about Jessica that he can.
He seems familiar to her, but can't place from where.
I know in those times, men couldn't show their feelings as freely as they do today, and with Truman's history, he's even more reluctant to show his emotions.
This is a book I go back to time and time again, and I'm glad I searched through my kindle to find it for another read.
Highly recommend this heartwarming story of true love and soul mates.

Just finished this one, and my face is a mess, if that's any indication of how good the story was! I would give it 4½ stars if possible. I started this one before Christmas, so got sidetracked, and had to restart, not that I'd forgotten everything, but I did need to refresh my memory. Re-reading the first few chapters was not a hardship, as I truly enjoyed this story. It has a bit of a different twist to it, and I had my suspicions, which were sort of confirmed in the end, in a very nice way! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes historical western romance and/or time travel to that period. It's a keeper for me, I would read it again, positively!

This was the first time travel book I have read. It is part of the Bodyguard box set. I really enjoyed it. I am a big fan of western romance and this took our girl Jessica back to 1881 Dodge City. There she meets Truman the sheriff. They are attracted to each other but try not to act on it. There are a lot of scenes in the book I really loved. They think Jessica has killed a man and she is going to be hung. You really have to read this book. There is so much in it I can't explain. It was a great read

This is a light-hearted fun read. It was romantic with great characters. The book is perfect for those days when you want to be entertained and not stretch your brain cells too far. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be reading Julianne MacLean's books in the future.

2.5 stars

This book really wasn't my cup of tea. I found myself skimming a lot of the book, bored with the storyline. It was just okay.

Book Review- Taken by a Cowboy by Julianne Maclean

A year after losing her brother, Jessica is questioning whether she should move back to Dodge. On the way home to visit her parents her life changes again. She loses control of her car in the rain and wakes up in the past. She time-travels to the old west where she earns a reputation for killing a gunslinger. The people call her June bug Jess. She meets Sheriff Truman Wade, pretty soon after arriving. It takes her a while to believe that time traveling is possible in her world. The author creates a great storyline around Jessica’s arrival in the old west. Everyone believes her to be June bug Jess who has killed before and she must persuade the sheriff she isn’t this person. It is frustrating for her. However, she is provided with an ally in the fellow time traveler and Lawyer. Her shock is obvious when she learns she is not the only one.
Jessica has to adapt and the reader gets to watch as it happens. Her feelings for Sheriff Wade are pretty instant. She keeps thinking he is familiar which she learns later why. Sheriff Wade doesn’t know what to think about her at first. Once she starts growing on him, his guilt concerning his past gets in the way. The reader watches as his barriers fall and Jessica becomes his focus. He must keep her safe as the dead man’s gang comes after her. He has his work cut out for him as she acts nothing like the women he knows. He is shocked at her strength and brazen attitude. It is a great combination considering he is the quiet type. I love the pairing of the two. It was a great story with a bit of time travel and romance. Throwing in a murderous old west gang and a mystery murderer, the story gets exciting. I’m not surprised when the original villain shows their face. The final fight isn’t what I expected. It was a bit unreal to me. Yes, I know what you are thinking, there is time travel but after you read it you will see what I mean. It is a good read and I liked the story as a whole. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Bad ending!

SPOILERS - I was prepared to give this book 4 stars, until I got to the ridiculous last chapter. This was never a 5 star read because there are numerous inconsistencies. Words and phrases used like: "arse" instead of "ass", "knickers' in a twist" etc. that I just don't think you would hear in the US' wild west. Maybe the author is British or Australian, I don't know - but it was jarring.
The ending to all this was ridiculous, I can see why the author thought that bringing someone forward in time by 200+ years could be problematic for the hero, but that would have been so much better than making it an instalove in the final chapter for a totally different man, plus introducing another paranormal event into the mix to justify the new hero being the old one. I'm not cruel enough to give this one star, because I did finish it, so the writing can't be that bad. Obviously time travel is a fantasy read, but the story should be believable within that concept, and this wasn't!

Did not like ending

Jessica is catapulted back to 1881 where she go d's herself accused of murder. Truman is the town sheriff and needs to solve the puzzle of this mysterious woman with no past.
I did not like this book as much as the first two Dodge City Bride books. Women who time travel backwards in books always seem brash and completely over the top in their attitude. I didn't like the ending either. Would not read another time travel story.

Finding love

Julianne MacLean has done a excellent job on this story about a woman who goes back in time and finds her true love. I think it would be kind of strange to go back in time and lived in that time period and fall in love with someone. I give this story a five star rating because of the story of the west.
