Solving murders by magic poses impossible challenges for the San Francisco Police Department given that non-magical people don’t know that magic exists… That’s where Private Investigator Bonnie Glock steps in. She specializes in cracking the most unusual cases, yet the department doesn’t know how she does it – they don’t realize that she has access to magic.
Bonnie Glock is a witch who sees it as her mission in life to hunt down supernatural criminals in the non-magical city of San Francisco. Normals aren’t allowed to know of magic’s existence, so she struggles to make sure that the magical dimension of her sleuthing goes largely unnoticed. Determined to combat the predominant prejudice mages have against Normals within the magical world, Bonnie is forced to bend both magical and Normal laws to serve justice in the non-wizarding world, the Mixed.
Unable to rely on the San Francisco PD or her former colleagues at the Magic Intelligence Agency for assistance, Bonnie hires a Normal human to help with her private investigation practice. But involving a Normal in tracking down magical criminals can be deadly. The United Wizarding Federation has been looking for an excuse to put an end to the help she’s been offering Normals. Keeping her secret from both worlds becomes increasingly challenging, especially after Bonnie learns that more than a lone killer mage is loose in the Mixed…
This was an enjoyable introduction to an unusual PI, with the unusual name of Bonnie Glock. I like the contemporary setting... with a side of magic... a whole sort-of parallel world co-existing with ours and a well explained magic system. Multiple murders to solve... deaths that don't seem like murders and that have no rational explanation of the cause of death, her own mother's death that no one else thinks was a murder! There's lots going on in this book but there are more (at least one) to come.
This first book of a series was a great way to introduce this new character to the reading world. Bonnie is a magical witch living and working in the “Normal” world. She helps solve crimes that have a trace of magic involved. When she tries to find out why her mother was killed...everything begins to go crazy. There are several entities trying to stop her from finding any information. This book was so well written that I finished the book in a few hours. If you like really strong yet likable women, this is definitely the series to begin.
I did finish it. Took me a while but I did it. Didn’t really care about the characters. Couldn’t get interested or involved with them. The premise of keeping magic hidden was good. Now that Cy has discovered it does give a little suspense but we knew what would happen next. Not interested enough to read any more in the series.
