Tap into your inner songsmith Teach Yourself Songwriting helps you develop your music-writing skills. It gives you advice on how to take advantage of MP3 and other Internet recording technology.
I coincidentally found this book while browsing the library stacks. Since I have not seen many books on "songwriting," I was intrigued and checked it out (even though I am not looking to write music).
I enjoyed this book even though I have near zero understanding of music in an academic sense (minimal understanding of theory and I cannot play an instrument either). I was impressed on the comprehension one needs for creating a pop-music track; but at the same time,I was impressed at how easy they make it sound to create a song if you have the time and patience to hammer away at it. I am toying with the ideas of downloading some software so I can just experiment when I get the time.
The only drawback is that this UK book is a little dated--they make suggestions to use Myspace for instance! I am not sure if one exists, but you may want to get an updated copy, or at the veryu least supplement the text with another source to help you understand the current equipment and computer requirements you need to create your songs.
I do not intend to write any pop-songs any time soon, but this book has vastly improved my appreciation while listening to new and favorite songs. This ranges from the addition of a new loop or acoustical sound to how all sounds compliments/contrasts with each other.
