To prove her father’s innocence, she’ll have to turn a killer’s sights on herself
When her father is accused of espionage and treason, journalist Jessie Kegan has no doubt the man she looked up to her entire life is innocent. Worse yet, before Colonel Kegan can stand trial, he’s found dead of a heart attack…but Jessie knows it was murder. Forcing aside her grief, she’s determined to use her investigative resources to clear her father’s name. But going after the truth means Jessie soon finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer who wants that truth to stay buried with her father.
Protecting Jessie Kegan is a job bodyguard Brandon Garrett can’t refuse. Jessie isn’t just a client at Maximum Security—she’s the sister of his best friend, Danny, who was killed in Afghanistan. With dangerous enemies gunning for Jessie from every angle, keeping her safe will mean keeping her close, and Bran finds their mutual attraction growing, though being Danny’s sister puts Jessie out of bounds.
With their backs against the wall, Jessie and Bran will have to risk everything to expose her father’s killer—before his legacy dies with his daughter.

Another great romantic-suspense by one of my favorite authors. I can always rely on Kat Martin to deliver a great plot and a hot romance. I love the guys and girls of the Max and look forward to the next book.
Jessie Kegan is an investigative journalist on a mission. Her father was accused of treason, jailed and died suddenly of a heart attack. After getting over her shock, she stuffs her grief deep down and takes a long hard look at what happened. As she digs deeper, the baddies come after her. She runs to the only man she knows will help: Captain Brandon Garrett, US Army Special Forces Delta, retired, now working for his brother's business, Maximum Security, as a bodyguard and boy does Jessie nee her body guarded.
When Jessie shows up at Maximum Security with an absolutely unbelievable story about her father and a conspiracy and espionage and treason, Bran is more than a little shocked. When the bullets start flying, he knows she just might be onto something big, really big. He also knows he could never refuse her anything she wanted or needed if it was within his power to do it. Her brother, Danny, died in Afghanistan saving Bran's life. He had a debt to pay.
Finding the baddies and protecting Jessie is going to be the easy part. Keeping his hands off the beautiful Jessie, now that is the hard part.
This is an entertaining, well-written, steamy, romantic suspense novel. It is fast paced with likable, engaging characters, a strong and capable female protagonist, a hot, former military hero, suspense, action, intrigue, and a happily ever after ending. It can be easily read and enjoyed as a stand alone. The glimpses of the other characters from the previous entries in this series make it even better when read in order. I am looking forward to reading the next novel in Ms. Martin's outstanding "Maximum Security" series with great anticipation.
The Ultimate Betrayal was a fast-paced, action-packed read with a fantastic romance.
After Jessie Kegan’s father is accused of espionage and treason, Jessie knows he's innocent. But before he can clear his name, Colonel Kegan dies of a heart attack. Convinced her father was murdered, Jessie uses her skills as a journalist to begin digging into his case but her investigation attracts unwanted attention and soon Jessie finds herself the target of a killer. For protection, Jessie turns to bodyguard Brandon Garrett, her late brother's best friend. To honor his promise to his friend, Bran will do whatever it takes to keep Jessie safe. With time running out to clear her father's name before his killer catches up her, Jessie and Bran are in a race to find the truth before it's too late.
The plot in this book was action-packed from the start with an attack on Jessie's life in the very first chapter. From there, the action doesn't let up. The case against Jessie's father is that he stole munitions scheduled for destruction and sold them on the black market. Initially there's very little to suggest Colonel Kegan is innocent outside of Jessie's belief he is, but slowly over the course of the book Jessie and Bran uncover a huge conspiracy centered around the theft. There were a few surprises throughout the plot and the characters do run into a few dead-ends. Throughout the book there are several attempts on Jessie's life which definitely kept the suspense up and kept you guessing on what would happen next. Overall I liked the way the investigation into the theft wrapped up with a solid final scene. I will say that after the main plot wraps up, there's a minor plot that felt unnecessary and seemed to only be included to traumatize Jessie.
Jessie and Bran's relationship starts out fairly slowly despite an obvious attraction on both sides. Bran doesn't want to dishonor his friend by starting something with his sister that's not likely to turn into something real whereas Jessie has issues being touched after she was previously sexually assaulted. I thought the author dealt well with Jessie's issue being touched and Bran's solution was incredibly sweet. The chemistry between the characters is fantastic and their relationship develops nicely after a few hiccups. One great thing about their relationship was how quickly they came to trust and respect one another. The friendship they developed was fantastic and I liked that they trusted each other to handle themselves in any situation.
Overall I really enjoyed The Ultimate Betrayal and I am looking forward to future installments in the series. I highly recommend this series if you're looking for some great romantic suspense.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
Journalist Jessie Kegan always stands by her stories, often making her career a priority in her life. However, when her father has been accused and jailed for espionage and treason, Jessie is determined to do anything she can do to clear his name. It is quite clear that a terrorist is at bay and Jessie is thrust into a maelstrom of events. For one thing, her father never made it to trial. He died of an apparent heart attack, but Jessie doesn't believe that for one minute. So, she now has a double duty - clear her father's name and find his killer. With the exceptional skills she has acquired to to the research that goes into her freelance journalism, she goes in head first. However, this soon places her life in danger.
Brandon Garrett works for Maximum Security and one day a gorgeous woman comes in the door asking for help. She is Jessie Keegan, sister to his best friend Daniel. This saddens Bran because Daniel was killed in action in Afghanistan while saving Bran's life. Although pained at the memories of Daniel, Bran agrees to shadow Jessie, and not a moment too soon, because right after she introduces herself, his office is assailed by bullets. Has the inquiries Jessie is about to tell Bran about already placed her in danger?
Jessie tells Bran of her concerns. She tells him how her father lost everything after being accused, and that she is certain that his death was the perfect scapegoat for the real criminals. She knows she excels with her job, but things are already getting far too hairy. Of course, Bran steps in and helps. One problem that affects them both is that they share in instantaneous attraction that soon proves impossible to ignore.
Just like the previous books in this series, as well as the novellas, which are included in my Maximum Security series review, this book is exciting from beginning to end. Bullets, destruction and danger are dogging Bran and Jessie's every step. Then the fact that the sexual tension exuding itself between them makes this story an incredible read. This exciting story blends action and romance together marvelously, thus making The Ultimate Betrayal an excellent read and a wonderful addition to the series. I am very much looking forward to more books in the series.
Many thanks to HQN Books and to NetGalley for this ARC to review. This is my honest opinion.
This is not the type of book that I normally read. I read it in a day but I had to make my self sit and read it. It had a little bit of romance and a mystery so that was a plus the writing was good but the storyline was just different for me.
I've enjoyed many of Kat Martin's romantic suspense novels but her newest, The Ultimate Betrayal, is one of my favorites. This book opens with a bang and the intensity never lessens. I was sucked in immediately, flipping pages with rapt attention until the very end.
Jessie and Bran are both intriguing characters with whom I engaged almost immediately. They're likable, honorable, determined in their quest for justice, and have incredible chemistry. I admired them as individuals and rooted for them as a couple. Martin puts them through the wringer before giving them their well-earned happily ever after. I loved Bran's sexual need for Jessie but also his gentleness and understanding as he helped her overcome a difficult obstacle. I respected Jessie's bravery both in her determination to discover the truth surrounding her father's death as well as how she confronted the trauma from her past. I enjoyed watching investigate as a team and come together as a couple, appreciating the respect, understanding, acceptance, and love that grew between them. They're one of my favorite Kat Martin couples.
A large portion of this book was on the action, danger, and suspense facet of the story but that doesn't mean Bran and Jessie's relationship takes a back seat. It's seamlessly interwoven into the intrigue with Bran's initial obligation to keep Jessie safe which gradually becomes friendship that evolves into sexual attraction and, finally, love. It's a gradual and realistic transition that checked all my HEA boxes.
The suspense portion checked a whole lot of boxes too. Martin kept me on the edge of my seat with a tightly woven plot that had me flipping pages, fully engaged, and wondering where the next twist was going to take me. I spent a fair amount of time alternating between gasping and holding my breath. And just when I thought everything was okay, Martin threw in another twist. It wasn't until I turned the last page of the epilogue that I allowed myself to finally breath easy. I love when an author pulls that off.
If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed romantic suspense story with sizzling chemistry and enough twists and turns to keep you glued to the pages from start to finish, I highly recommend The Ultimate Betrayal.

Fast paced and bullets flying, Ms. Martin fires off this new book in the series off with an adrenaline rush in chapter one. I love how Jessie is pragmatic. She is straight to the point: hello my name is... my brother knew you and trusted you... by the way, people are trying to kill me... Sorry! Jessie is the kind of character I like because she is good with communication, prepared and owns her own mistakes. She is a bit headstrong but that comes with the territory as an investigative journalist.
The characters in this story are loving created. I find them to be mature and appealing. Brandon Garret is the man Jessie reaches out to for some help to clear her father's name. She knows Brandon and her dead brother were close in the military. She is counting on their ties to give her a little boost. What she receives is much more. Brandon is the knight in shining armour, ready to rescue this damsel in distress. Luckily for him, Jessie is not completely clueless.
The plot and suspense portions of this story are well done. The plot flows well and nicely integrates the romantic angle between Jessie and Brandon. The suspense is well designed in finding out who threw Jessie's father under the bus and destroyed his name. The conspiracy keeps a reader guessing and the betrayal is a bit brutal. It is not a surprise at who is the perpetrator as Ms. Martin provides good leads for readers to easily draw the right conclusions.
One thing that did stick out to me is how Jessie feels about law enforcement agencies. She fully believes in them and sometimes came across as unrealistically positive about their abilities. In the current client where law enforcement is being painted unfairly and demonized, I found this surprising and pleasant.
This romantic suspense is recommended for readers who enjoy proving a conspiracy under pressure as people are out to get you.
The Ultimate Betrayal by Kat Martin Maximum Security #3
Brandon “Bran” Garrett likes what he sees when Jessie Keegan walks into his place of business and the interest Jessie has in Bran is intense, too. Bran is soon involved with helping Jessie try to clear her father’s name, find out who killed her father while he was in prison, following clues and doing his best to keep Jessie safe. This was a fast-paced, complicated, thrill ride from beginning to end.
What I liked: * Jessie: dedicated, intelligent, seeker of truth and not afraid of a bit of trouble. She did have a backstory that had a big impact on her life. She deserves happiness and to find a family to replace the one she lost. * Bran: ex-military, intense, lethal, and capable – in more ways than one. He is a good man who deserves happiness. * The supporting characters – all of them – good men who end up with good women – eventually. * Meeting Bran’s brothers – the relationship between the brothers is strong and they are there for one another * The side story of Ty’s romance * The intensity of the story * The plot, story, and writing * The twists and turns and complexity of the story * The growth Jessie showed in a couple areas of her life * That there were some good men despite the bad ones * The way it all came together in the end.
What I did not like: * The reminder that there are evil, ruthless, greedy people in all elements of society – not everyone in places of responsibility are trustworthy. * Knowing that there really are people willing to harm others for reasons I don’t understand
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for the ARC – This is my honest review.
This is the 3rd book in the Maximum Security series. There’s some mentions of couples from previous books, but it’s minor and no events build off each other so these stand on their own really well.
I really enjoyed this one. One of my favorite tropes: Brother’s Best Friend/Best Friend’s Sister. It was also a great mix of mystery, suspense, & romance. Investigating her father’s death leads to conspiracies, treason, and terrorism. While Bran & Jesse are on their own a lot, they also get help from friends and family.
There’s several action scenes balanced with Bran and Jesse getting to know one another. The pacing was fantastic and I didn’t want to stop listening.
Narration: James Anderson Foster continues to be a great fit for the series. His style is perfect for romantic suspense. Bringing equal anticipation to the budding relationships as well the thriller/action aspects.
After reading the first two books in the Maximum Security series, I was hopeful about this third in the series. The first book was okay, and the second was a little better, leaning more toward the positive, so I was really hoping that this one would move further in that direction. Instead, The Ultimate Betrayal went the other way, and the strange thing about that is Jessie and Brandon are both the types of characters I like. He's an alpha male without being obnoxious about it, and she's a strong woman who can take care of herself, so even though she needs some help, she's not the damsel in distress type. So, my problem wasn't with the romantic couple, it was with the over the top pieces of the story. First, there's Jessie and everything she's been through. It's like the universe threw one big ball of bad at this woman and everything stuck. Then, along comes Brandon, whose love, or lovemaking as the case may be, miraculously heals her. I just didn't buy it. Finally, there are the many characters. Maybe it's just me, but it felt like this one had more than necessary to move the plot along. Some of that could be due to the number of red herrings - I mean, you have to have characters to cover them, and there's nothing wrong with red herrings if the answer isn't quite as obvious as it is here. I don't know, maybe it's me, maybe it's the story, or maybe it's a combination of both, but The Ultimate Betrayal wasn't the book for me. Kat Martin is talented, and I've enjoyed other books by her - this just doesn't happen to be one of them.
This is part of the Maximum Security series, telling the story of Brandon Garrett, who works with his brother at their Dallas Security company. Bran is ex Delta Force, the best of the best in the Army, so when Jessie Kegan needs help, Bran is the one she reaches out to. Her brother Danny, was Bran's best friend and died saving Bran's life, so Bran feels an instant connection to Jessie. Especially when the office gets shot up the minute she walks in the door. Bran takes on her case, and finds himself very attracted to her, as she is attracted to him. She has some dark history of being abducted and abused, which makes intimacy difficult for her. Can they overcome the issues she is facing as well as his survivors guilt? Can she handle living with a warrior, as she is an Army Brat and swore to never date a warrior? Will they be able to work all that out while trying to find out who killed her father and framed him for theft of chemical weapons? I'm not gonna tell you, you have to read the book. It is worth it.
The short story is good as well, featuring Colt Wheeler and Lissa Blayne. She's a detective working at Maximum Security, he's an ex-Ranger who was friends with Liam Douglas. Douglas had a wife and 2 children he wanted to adopt, but died before the paperwork was done. Colt goes to check on Liam's widow , only to find her in trouble and Lissa, her best friend, trying to help. They join forces to find Timmy, the son Liam wasn't able to adopt before his death. Turns out, Julie's first husband has kidnapped the boy and taken him to his hideaway in Mexico. So Colt and Lissa end up in Mexico and in bed. Will they get to Timmy in time? Will they be able to work out a long distance relationship?
Kat Martin always writes such fun stories, full of sexy characters and dangerous situations, without losing the humanity beneath each person. I really enjoy her books and can't wait to read more.
The Ultimate Betrayal by Kat Martin is a smoldering romance and an intriguing mystery. The opening scene sets the pace for the action and suspense. Jessie comes to Brandon for help in proving that her father did not betray his country. Jessie is not the stupid female that you yell at in the book to not make stupid decisions.
Brandon feels like he owes his life to Jessie and her family. Her brother died saving his life in the war. He agrees to help Jessie with researching what happened to her father. Immediately people try to stop them. But figuring out who is the biggest question and who can they trust. Since they seem to know every where they are.
There are several secondary characters that each added their own dimensions to the story. The story is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone. I do enjoy that other characters from the series make appearances.
Sexual content – several scenes with details. At times you forget it is a mystery as the physical part takes over. Violence – a few people die, and Jessie and Brandon’s lives are threatened throughout the novel Language – f word 12 times, Gd*mn was used once, Sh(t and d@mn 24 times total Drinking – minor drinking.
I received this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review. You can see my full review at More Than a Review dot com where I rate the level of sex, violence, language and drug/alcohol use in books.
This book included the main story (The Ultimate Betrayal) and a novella (Before Nightfall). Both are part of the Maximum Security world and both were excellent stories, filled with suspense and heat. In The Ultimate Betrayal, Jessie turns to Brandon Garrett--her deceased brother's best friend--to help her clear her father's name. Her father was accused of treason and killed while in prison. But the investigation quickly heats up as the killer turns his sights on Jessie in an effort to stop her nosing around. Jessie knew she shouldn't fall for Bran--her brother had warned her he was a playboy--but sometimes, the heart wants what it wants. And Brandon never felt he was a one-woman guy but Jessie has a way of touching his heart and soul. This one also includes a side romance of Jessie's friend Hallie and Bran's friend Ty. And we see a few other Maximum Security employees that I think we'll see more of in other stories. This one takes place mostly in Colorado. Then in Before Nightfall, we go back to Dallas where Colt visits his friend's widow at the same time that she reaches out to Lissa (a Max employee) for help. We first met Colt in Ultimate Betrayal when he lent some backup to Bran. Now, he teams up with Lissa to reclaim their friend's son from his drug-dealing father who kidnaps him and takes him to Mexico. It's a novella but it is packed with both heat and action! I look forward to seeing these two again in future Max stories.
I received this book from netgalley for an honest review.. So Im not really sure how I feel about this book. I think that it was well written and the story moved along well. The sexual tension between Bran and Jessie was fire.. I just couldn't really connect to the story or its characters.. I found myself not really caring at all what happened. Also two side characters became romantically involved after what felt like them knowing each other for 5 min, and all of a sudden they were planning a family trip to disney world? it just seemed like it came out of nowhere and didn't really need to be included in the story. But I do think that my not feeling anything for the story is more of a me problem, not the book.. I read alot of these ex military/ bodyguard kind of romances at one point and i think i burnt myself out of these kinds of story lines.. I think the actual problems I had with the story were minor, and if you love military/ bodyguards helping the Heroine solve a mystery that is personal to her.. With a bit of the forbidden because Bran was best friends and in the same unit with Jessies brother before he was killed in action. and they don't want to get involved with each other. You should check this book out.. It is part of a series and while I only read this one I didn't feel like I was lost at anypoint
Kat Martin writes a great blend of Romance, mystery and suspense but this time the romance took over the story having readers skipping several pages to get back to the plot hoping for answers that is haunting both Jessie and Bran.
This can be read as a stand alone novel.
The characters are likable and Jessie isn't your typical stand in the way female. She is able to take care of herself and knows when to ask for help. So no need to yell Do not go in that room!
Bran is typical characters for his type of book and setting.
Many times readers will have to suspend their belief as these two can not seem to keep from being shot, hit, almost killed many times.
The ending is predictable and readers will be able to figure it out before the characters do. These are the reason I am unable to give the book 5 stars
It is well written the background of the characters is the perfect amount, the cast of characters each have a purpose and a reason to be there.
Kat Martin is one of the best at weaving Romance and Suspense in to a perfect story. However she falls just short for this reader.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Kat Martin The Ultimate Betrayal.
You know what you will get from a Kat Martin novel: a gutsy heroine and an alpha hero who is most likely former military and extremely protective of the heroine. Together they must fight off numerous baddies while trying to figure out who is out to get them. The action will be practically non-stop with the hero having to save the heroine over and over again. Then they’ll stop and make love and then continue their battles against the bad guys. It’s a pattern with most of her novels, but I still really enjoy her books.
That’s what you’ll get in her newest novel. She is really tops at writing non-stop romantic thrillers. I started this one in the evening and couldn’t go to bed until I finished. I knew that they would get their HEA and stop all the baddies by the end of the book, but I wanted to see how that would happen. If you like romantic thrillers, you’ll enjoy this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
The Ultimate Betrayal by Kat Martin is Book 3 in the Maximum Security Series. It’s the story of Jesse Keegan who is determined to clear her father’s name of betrayal to the country, but before that can be done he dies. Jesse is convinced that he has been murdered, buy by whom? Since Jesse is a journalist she decides to investigate the case but is soon becomes a target. Because of this she decides she needs some help. Enter bodyguard Brandon Garret a member of Maximum Security, but more important to Jesse is the fact that he was in the military with her brother Daniel. Bran has survivor’s guilt as Daniel saved his life as the price of his own. So of course he is going to help her, but before they can even start to do this the office is bombed. Is it connected to what Jesse is investigating? How will Bran handle being attracted to Jesse with his guilty feelings about her brother? Is Jesse’s father REALLY guilty? Only way to find out is to read this excellent book from Kat Martin. Just FYI: There’s lots of excitement with bullets flying, and danger around every corner!
Confession time, The Ultimate Betrayal is my first book from Kat Martin. After starting with bang, it slowed down a bit. That being said, about a third in things really started to pick up again.
I liked Jessie. She was tenacious and determined to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding her father's death. And what a tangled web of lies, deceit and corruption she uncovered. Thank goodness she had Bran to help keep her safe and unravel the mess she found herself in the middle of. And in the midst of all the danger they were facing was this simmering attraction and affection.
Not sure who to trust or exactly how deep the coverup went, it was a race against time and tyranny as Bran and Jessie put the pieces together. My heart was pounding as the final showdown took place. Talk about intense. I still feel winded after the way things played out. From start to finish, Jessie and Bran's whirlwind romance kept me on my toes and waiting to see what would happen next. And that ending has me looking forward to see what is in store for the Max Security Team next.
Finding herself the target of person or person's unknown, Jessie Kegan goes to the person her brother said would always be there for her if he couldn't be, Brandon Garrett, Her investigation into her father's death has made someone or some organization want to silence her. Was her father murdered? Who is behind the attempts on Jessie's, and now also Bran's lives?
Their attraction to each other is almost instantaneous, but neither wants to admit the attraction since Bran was her brother's best friend, and Jessie has issues due to an assault she suffered. When they decide to act on their attraction, it is with full consent of both parties, and pretty darn hot!
The twists and turns this book takes are fabulous. When we find out who the mastermind is, I have to say I didn't even have that person as a suspect!! I've enjoyed the first two books in this series and can't wait for the next one!
I have not read anything by Kat Martin before (I know, I know, have I been living under a stone etc?). I found this to be a cross between a sort of Mission Impossible v 50 Shades kind of production. There IS a feasible, contemporary story of betrayal set in cultural and political terms. All the characters are well written, although there's something just a little nauseous about the portrayal of both main characters' bodies being 'utter perfection' in every way lol. The love scenes, too are very predictable, more suited perhaps to a romance category than a murder mystery. For me, the book became much more interesting and realistic towards the end, as the plot catches up with sexual stereotypes a little. I almost put this book down after the first few pages, after realising it was one in a series and all the team members were all brilliant at everything they do etc., etc., but persevered and turned out to enjoy the book more than I thought I was going to, hence the 3*.
Jessie is a journalist who finds herself in a fair share of trouble when it comes to her writing but it clear that someone wants to stop her from looking into her fathers case after a few attempts at her life. She goes to he late brother's friend Brandon to help about and after someone tries to silence her he knows he just has to help her with her case. He can be be her bodyguard as she digs deeper into what's really going on and finally prove her fathers innocence.
Whew this book was a journey and a half. So much to hook the readers and keep them on their toes. I loved seeing how they would pick up clues and get closer to finding her fathers killer as well as figure out who framed him. Then theres the romance I enjoyed it but to be honest I was more into the case. I loved that the main characters hardly had a moment of peace before something else happened and I just love a good action packed mystery thriller. Overall great book highly recommend!
THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL by Kat Martin is third book of the Maximum Security series and it literally starts with a bang when gunfire erupts the moment journalist Jessie Kean steps into Brandon Garret’s office. Together, they find themselves in a deadly game of survival as they search the truth behind accusations of espionage and treason against Jessie’s father and his suspicious death. It is a race against time if Brandon want to expose Jessie’s father’s killers—before his legacy dies with his daughter. The suspenseful plot is fueled with heart-stopping action, with the danger lurking around corners, and with the twist and turns of the investigation. The heat between Bran and Jessie is steaming off the pages. THE ULTIMATE BETRYAL is an incredible thriller, and Kat Martin gives her readers an adventure they will never forget.
I had to force myself to finish the book due to the character of Jessie Kegan. Her father and brother had been military and she had seen her mother’s worry due to their careers. When Brandon Garrett uses torture on a suspected terrorist, she does not like it. You don't shake hands and play nice with terrorists! When he asks her to go to Dallas with him, she tells him she does not think she could live with him knowing that he faced danger every day in his job. Does she want a man who sits behind a desk every day? This is the dumbest woman!
Jessie’s father was arrested for treason but died before he could clear his name. She is determined to clear his name but the ones who killed her father are after her and Brandon becomes her bodyguard. He calls in fellow military to help and a plot is uncovered that was hatched by highly-placed military officials.
