Arthuriana, victoriana, and capybaras: welcome to Thule!

A girl with a secret . . .
In the back of an ambulance, River Greer counts each breath her little sister takes until the final one: Sage’s body is giving up, ravaged by a mysterious illness. The late-night rush to the ER, however, turns into a surreal nightmare when River is abducted and ferried across the universe to the fabled Thule: a world beyond worlds, where Victorian mores collide with magic and Arthurian legend.

. . . meets a knight on a mission to save his world.
There, his grace Hadrian Landevale of Caid is fighting losing battles of his own: to recover Isolde, his runaway wife, and against the blight that threatens the ichor, the source of all life on Thule. To add insult to injury, the captured fugitive Thule pathfinders just brought back from Earth is not his duchess but an eerie doppelgänger.
When it becomes clear that someone on Thule will go to any length to silence River, Hadrian offers his protection to this obstinate stranger . . . whose secrets might be the key to saving Thule’s most precious treasure: the light in its blood.

For fans of V.E. Schwab, and Nalini Singh, follow River on her epic journey to a world shaped by legends and magic, where everything is possible . . . except going home.

Camilla Monk is a Canadian author who rose to dubious fame with a romantic suspense series starring an OCD-ridden hitman and a wide array of strange and occasionally angry animals. These days she shares her writing time between high-octane adventures in the same vein and fantasy, her secret love (but with weird animals, too.)

She grew up in Paris in a Franco-American family, has lived in Tokyo, and spent ten years in advertising, building rickety websites for M&A boutiques and hedge funds. All of that somehow landed her in Montréal, where she keeps a close watch on the squirrels and complains on a daily basis about the egregious number of Tim Hortons.

This might be fanciful assumption, but it seems to me that writers' pandemic projects have that special shine that comes from someone stuck at home while the rest of the world has taken a sudden turn into the weird, and writing the book of their heart, no matter what publishing "wisdom" dictates today.
When the author offered me an ARC of a new fantasy, I glommed onto it. And hoo boy, was not disappointed. This book reads like a pandemic project, so I was not at all surprised to get to the author's note at the end; while it's not strictly a pandemic project, the impetus you can read for yourself, along with an impressive ton of world building data.

The story starts running, and absolutely never stops, building to a crescendo of tension with a huge dose of sensawunda, as well as romance. Our heroine is River Greer, who is trying to get to the hospital, where her younger sister is in severe crisis. Again. She and her dad are both trying to get there. River has almost made it when she gets snookered by what she thought was a doctor ... and ends up in another world.

Discovering that world is part of the pleasure of this book. The people of Thule took Arthuriana, with a hefty overlay of Victoriana, and shifted it to their world, with its own set of dynamics.

River looks like the runaway wife of a duke, and finds out that if she doesn't play the role, the alternative is grim. River has to get used to Victorian rules, which includes killer corsets, as well as a duke who owns all he sees. Sparks fly.

We cascade into danger as River learns more about the world, herself, her family, the family dynamics of Thule, while wearing swoopy ball gowns that are not fun to adventure in, heh.

I love River's voice. There's a hint of Island here, from the author's previous series; great sense of humor, and irony, and a take-no-crap attitude that propels her into adventure as well as romance. I devoured this book, and am left longing for more. Lots more!

Arthurian legend, bodice-ripping, and capybaras: welcome to Thule!

Oh yeahhh. This might be one of the most refreshing books I've read this year yet. I mean can we get some round of applause on this one?

description

You have given me a new life, Ms Monk.

I came into this one with low expectations, as I usually do with new-to-me authors. Plus, it promised us an Arthurian legend (something I'm kinda in the mood for lately idk why), and, it features my newest animal obsession:

(the capybara, not the cat) (the capybara, not the cat)

So, with that in mind, this book surprises me. The level of detail in the worldbuilding and backstory, I am impressed. I'm a whore for an excellent worldbuilding and this book delivered. I feel like I was transported right into the story the moment the book starts. It's not a generic sort of worldbuilding, you know, the one that you usually get with some other books. This one got a great magic system, interesting mechanics to them and even technology surrounded them. I mean, have I mentioned how impressed I am? The last time I was impressed by a magic system, it was the Hidden Legacy series.

And the characters? Oooohh, we got no asshole alpha hero in this one guys. WE HAVE A GENTLEMAN!

"Will you forgive me this one sin?"

description

I know, I'm regressing to a teen a bit here but bear with me for a while. It has been a hot minute since I read a genuinely good hero that doesn't overpower our girl with his alpha-ness. And our girl, River, what a fantastic protagonist. She's smart, something that I don't think the author portrayed that well, and drama free from what I can tell. You don't get that airhead attitude from her, the one that creates complicated situations wherever she goes. Well, she did create one huge complicated situation, not on her own will of course.

And the plot? I think I'll end it here since I want you to read it on your own. All I can say is that it's original and darker than I expected (not something I usually found in a fantasy romance but definitely in horror and those dark romances).

All in all, I have a massive fun with this book. A slower pace fantasy romance with great worldbuilding, interesting characters, an excellent magic system, and an original plot. Definitely an easily recommended book to those who love plot-driven fantasy romance with vibrant worldbuilding.

I fell in love with the world of Thule in this lovely fantasy romance, which was engaging from start to finish. We are big fans of anachronism in our house, and I was utterly charmed by this parallel universe that shut its doors (mostly) to Earth a couple of centuries ago and thus are a little behind the times when modern heroine River finds herself there. All of the fun bits of Earth contraband and Victorian propriety were delightful. The romance is almost insta-love, but it didn't bother me as much as that kind of thing does sometimes, and it is very, very tame s3x scene wise. There are a lot of background characters, and I did get a little confused with some of the Arthurian legends shared with River and have to go back to double check some of what was told to make sure I had it right, but this was a minor thing in a book with such a richly built world. I've always found this author's writing to be intelligent, humorous and addictive and that remains true. I really, really hope she will use some of those secondary characters to take us back to Thule, I can see potential for several of them to have their own books so, fingers crossed!

Between 4 and 5 ⭐️ depending on mood

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Let me just start by saying I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought, and I devoured it in two days. The world building was delightful - original and in depth, which is something I always really like in any fantasy books. I especially liked that the author invented her own language for the book! The magic system was super interesting as well and not something I'd seen before.

The characters were all really likeable, and the romance was super cute, although if there's one thing I could say is that it went from 0 to 100 pretty quickly with the love story haha.

Overall I'm going to keep an eye out for more books from Camilla Monk as I really enjoyed her writing style!

The good
    + Pet capybara!
+ The honesty about their feelings towards each other
+ Sfjona. I hope she got her gentle giant in the end
+ Their magic bond (shut it, Hadrian, it's magic and that's that)
+ River's family. She has the best dad and little sister
+ River's dad tattooing people illegally and getting paid with a live duck named Baguette
+ River's dad trying to train Baguette as a protection duck
+ The author's dedication to their work. Seriously, all the research, designing fonts etc, that's awesome

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
o I am extremely bad with following complicated storylines and fantasy world-building, so I won't say much about the plot because I was just along for the ride without much of a clue about what was going on
o There were many pop culture references I didn't understand

The bad
    - There was a lot of misogyny in this book. A lot of it fit in the setting, but River didn't push back against it either. She didn't even set Hadrian straight
    - River was very much a 'damsel in distress'. For most things, she was a bystander who really just got in the way all the time. It often felt like she was watching scenes like she was in the cinema instead of actually present
    - Most of the book took place over the span of one week. I very much enjoyed the instalove aspect, but the felt a bit unnecessary. Either they shouldn't have cared, or they should have waited a few more days. Hadrian's guilt and him calling it sinning really soured everything

Quotes
That's bromance right there, when you can recognize someone just from the way they scratch at your door.

In another drawer, she finds a sheaf of fashion plates featuring detailed instructions on how to style your hair so that you, too, can look like a sentient chandelier this season.

"You're half of my heart, halfway across the universe, and I need it whole."

This story was very engaging and I couldn't put it down. I do feel River had much more potential (resisting the misogyny, using her not-magic during the fights), and that most of her ideals and plans were only in her head and not executed. But Hadrian was lovely and I really liked their letters there in the end. I would probably recommend this book (and kindly ask you to explain the plot to me afterwards) if you're looking for a historical fantasy that's actually sci-fi. Or both.

This book had an interesting concept and style. It was futuristic but also historical. Our heroine is sent to another universe where they are living in the 1800s. Mythological creatures are real but electronics are not well used or understood. Elements of Arthurian tales, the force from Star Wars, Victorian ton, and a foreign language that my Kindle would never be able to translate, all exist and make sense together. It was never confusing but took a while to figure out with rather large information dumps. Sometimes I questioned the logic of why they have one thing but not another but I tried to remain focused on the mystery of the story. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to delving into this universe again. Thank you NetGalley and Camille Monk for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved it. I loved the fantasy aspect mixed with modern references. I loved the romance and Hadrian being an honorable guy. He was uptight and demanding in the beginning, but he actually ended up being someone who was supportive and respectful. I loved River who was a strong, smart protagonist. She stood up for herself and the people she loved.

I felt like Hadrian and River's romance made sense, considering how they both were loyal and would do everything for their people. Hadrian was becoming sickly as he gave too much energy protecting his land and the people in it. And River dedicated most of her life protecting her sister, Sage. She was on her way to becoming a doctor so that she could help find a cure for her.

I'm so curious about the other characters. I hope we get future books featuring River's sister, Sage, who lived a sheltered life. I also want a book with River's other sister, Floe, who lived a traumatic life.

Overall, I really enjoyed this series.

thank you netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review

first of all i was impressed with the extra (made up i think) language the author used throughout the book. the world building in general was really interesting. that characters were likeable and i enjoyed reading about them.

what I didn't like was for the most part the plot, for the sole reason that everything happened too fast. the climax was reached far too early in the book and the romance (though cute) was rushed. i also didn't enjoy the space/wormhole element but that's just me (see: I don't like sci-fi).

i do recommend though not passionately

"Thulē lawenotwag !"

I'll start by saying that a story based on Arthurian legends is a first for me, and probably explains my 4-star rating. I really enjoyed immersing myself in this new universe, parallel to our own, and discovering this story and Thule.

Several points bothered me, such as the romance between River and Hadrian (I adore that name, though), which seems too fast, insta-love almost.

The plot-twist (related to River and Floe's family in particular, and the fate of the latter) left a big impression on me. That was a clever idea. In reality, apart from the romance that seemed forced at times, the plot is great and the characters are likeable.
The fact that a language, Thulish, was created by the author for this novel, using reconstructed Proto-Celtic words, is absolutely huge ! I loved that aspect and the ending lexicon was welcome and a delight to read.

A story that for some is perhaps not worth 4 stars but deserve them in many ways.
I look forward to reading the novella and I hope that the second volume will be published ! I want to to discover the story of Floe and Eliud.

When I tell you, I fell head over heels for Thule, capybaras and all!
The worldbuilding was so eloquently done, I was blindsided by how easy it was to follow. I’m someone who can sometimes get a little overwhelmed by too much worldbuilding, too many characters too soon, too much drama - but this was truly perfectly balanced.

River is a lookalike for the runaway bride of a duke and is subsequently swept into a world unlike anything she has ever known. Forced into a role that she knows very little about, this headstrong girl is suddenly the epicentre of a series of events that lead her down a very slippery slope. All the while, dealing with all the emotions that come from having a very unwell family member.

In my personal life, I am that family member, and I am very fortunate to have a beautifully headstrong sister who I see shares many of the qualities of River Greer. This book was relatable, beautifully crafted and had me sobbing at times.
It was the slow burn romantacy that I had no idea I needed.

Capybaras are my favourite animal in the world, and I’m brutally honest, that’s what I signed up for. I had no idea that my love of capybaras would lead to one of my favourite romantacy books of 2023.
Go and read it, relate to it, laugh with it and maybe even cry with like I did. She’s a tornado and I was the flimsy tree that was swept off my feet.

I’d give it a solid 🌶️🌶️ spicy rating. It has spice, but much more of a romantic type of spice, not so much dirty take me behind the bike shed.
Highly recommend to fans of Sarah J Maas!

This is a first for me by this author and it definitely won't be the last! I loved the whole deal with the mystery, sci-fi, and the splash of romance! Beginning with River she is in the back of the ambulance with her sister Sage as they are rushing to the hospital because Sage is having difficulty breathing. While waiting in the waiting room River's dad shows up and with the hospital's policies only one visitor per patient River is left waiting in the waiting room. However, soon someone she thought was a doctor or a nurse comes in and directs her to follow them to Sage and she trusts them and goes. Only to find out they are kidnapping her and taking her far far away to a place called Thule.
Once she is in Thule she is taken to the home of her "husband" who is her twin sister's husband. They work together to try to solve the mystery of how and why she is Thule and then how they can beat an unknown disease that is overtaking the land and trying to play at politics because they think she is her sister and traveled to the earth and abandoned her husband. Hence, they wish to charge her with those crimes. I loved all the mythology I also loved all the character development and everything in between! This is not a book you can pay attention to half-heartedly this book needs your full attention to follow along and see what is going on and what is next. There are parts in this book that will have you laughing such as the attacking duck, parts that will pull at your heartstrings, and then parts that will enrage you and make you want to get justice for River and her sisters.
I listened to the audiobook and it was an experience all its own, I loved how it had different voices and the voices fit the characters and everything in between!
Thank you Netgalley and Yaypub for the opportunity to listen and review this one!

When I started reading this I had difficultly trying to categorize the trope of story this is, It's not enemies to lovers. It also isn't a kidnapped/imprisoned or mistaken identity trope either. It doesn't really fit into any of them. It is however exciting. It has an interesting premise with the female lead, River, being kidnapped and brought to another planet to be handed over to a Duke as his missing wife. Who just so happens to look just like her. This planet has it's own magic system that is dying and the duke is spending his life trying to keep things going on his land. River seems to fall in line a bit to easily with the archaic rules of owning women and controlling their every movement that exists there. She also seems to fall for the duke a tad too quickly as well. But there are deeper plots afoot, a missing duchess to still find and a world that needs saving. I really couldn't put down the book as it kept me interested through every chapter. So while it isn't my standard fare romance wise, it was exciting with a quickly moving storyline and a very detailed world and characters. (I listened to this on Audio so apologies if I butcher the names.)

I’ve never read a story quite like this. It is Arthurian in nature, but with a Sci-Fi element sort of. The story does not feature Arthur or Merlin, though they did previously live in the world of Thule.

Our FMC is a young woman named River who is kidnapped and taken to Thule. She learns she was mistaken for Isolde, the runaway wife of a man named Lord Hadrian. All River wants is to return to Earth to her sister Sage, who is deathly ill. She soon finds out that Thule is facing some problems of their own. When Sage meets Hadrian, pieces start to fall into place for both of them. The people of Thule contain a light in their blood called ichor, and there is a blight on the land causing it to vanish.

I give kudos to the author for featuring some of a made-up Thule language, and for making the MMC Hadrian a gentleman, and not a growling, controlling Alpha. A breath of fresh air, to be sure.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me a book full of mischievous capybaras that I never knew I needed!

I might have tuned out a lot of the world building - but my god was I hooked with Of Blood And Light! I love River and her willingness to always sacrifice herself for those that she love. Hadrian is the only blonde MMC that I don’t hate! He is all gentleman but still would go to war. Reading OBAL had leaked an interest in learning more about the legend of the round table and the lore of Arthur and Lancelot.

This is not a story you can only give partial attention to. It isn't a palette cleanser or time waster. It is an enchanting, captivating, intelligent novel that pulled me in and kept me wanting more. It can be dense at times, which isn't necessarily a negative, and it's definitely smarty pants-level material but worth hanging in there for it things get a little overwhelming. Readers operating with higher IQs than me will have no trouble. Monk is such a brilliant person and I love that she writes at a level that utilizes every bit of that brilliance. I have never felt, while reading any of her books, like she dumbed things down for the reader it held back. It really irks me when authors do that so I'm quite appreciate that Monk keeps me challenged, alert, and inspires curiosity and growth.

I found the characters charming and quite likeable, at the very least. I highly recommend pulling up the artwork on the author's website while reading; I found it to be a fun enhancement.

This story is unique and a refreshing change of pace. The author's imagination is beyond my comprehension and I love that so much. Monk developed her own font/script, for Pete's sake! Such a brilliant human and I'm thankful she shares her brain and humor with us.

*Audiobook review*

The first in the Thule Cycle series, this book takes us from modern-day Toronto to the distant land of Thule, where Victoriana and Arthurian legend meet. The FMC River is kidnapped and along the way meets the mysterious Duke of Caid and begins the search for her long lost twin.

This book was not what I expected and I feel like there’s a real mix of things to put in this review.

Things I liked:

⭐️The magic system was unique and really interesting, with links to mysterious and brutal old gods. The magic of this world is intrinsically linked to the land and its people.

⭐️River! This FMC is a great perspective to view the plot unfold from, her lack of knowledge of the world she is thrust into helps you as the reader to find your feet and start to get a grip of what’s going on.

⭐️The central plot of the missing mother/sister. This story is really intriguing and I found myself really wanting to know what happened to these women, it was a compelling plot.
I loved the narration of Sarah Kisko, her accent made the character feel more real and she has a lovely voice for audio books.

Things that weren’t for me:

⭐️There was just sooooo much going on! As I said, the central plot was really interesting to me, but by trying to cram in elements of Arthurian legend, Victorian morals and technology, political intricacies, modern day references, as well as seemingly random creatures - capybaras and unicorns - that don’t really aid the plot in any way just left me confused at points.

⭐️The audio effects. Okay it’s not that the effects were bad, they were just really inconsistent, you’d have a long period of nothing (except the swooshing added to signal the end of chapters/scenes) and then suddenly intense effects that sometimes genuinely scared me because I wasn’t expecting a demon voice to start yelling at me out of nowhere when walking my dog.

⭐️The inclusion of a second narrator. I just don’t think this was my cup of tea, I love a second narrator when you have a dual POV, but just having a male narrator for dialogue made it a bit disjointed and there were a couple of editing slip ups where dialogue is repeated by the male and female narrator. Again it just feels overcomplicated. Also the combination of the slotted-in dialogue and the British accent made the male narrator sound like AI at some points lol

Overall I enjoyed the majority of this read, but struggled to keep engaged at points because of the things listed above. I don’t think it’s a series I would carry on with but had fun with this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Camilla Monk for allowing me the privilege of an advanced listener’s copy of this book.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review of this book**

Of Blood & Light by C. Monk is a wonderful story that will definitely captivate readers. Monk writes with an
enchanting blend of polished and ornate talent. The book presents readers with a portal style fantasy, where the hero River, gets kidnapped and taken to another planet incredibly similar to our world. Except, the world is imbued with magic, the same magical ichor that flows through her veins. She needs to find a way back home to take care of her little sister who is on her deathbed, but when she discovers her long lost twin might have been taken to the same place when she was five she teams up with her twins estranged husband. An enthralling adventure ensues. Queue enemies to lovers, strong sibling love, rich history, and an exciting new magic system. The premise of the story is immediately enthralling, filled with elements of magical blood, a haunting blight, family secrets, and my favorite forced proximity/enemies-to-lovers trope. C. Monk's storytelling abilities are nothing short of remarkable and gifted, allowing the reader to immerse themselves in a world crafted with immense depth and attention to detail.

The richness of the world-building is a testament to Monks writing skill. The world building is akin to that of Tolkien's work. The intricacies of the magical world and its history draw readers in, while the incorporation of various languages adds a certain authenticity and lived in feeling to the setting. One of the most outstanding aspects of the book is how Monk expertly blends modern linguistics with the eloquence of older forms of speaking. This blend adds a layer of sophistication and allure to the prose, while at the same time being relatable and funny while using modern slang within our heroines inner monologue. However, it's worth noting that if you find books like Lord of The Rings, or Pride and Prejudice a bit overwhelming or verbose, this book might present similar challenges as it, too, provides a substantial and language rich experience.

In conclusion, "Of Blood & Light" is a gem for fantasy enthusiasts who relish complex world-building, consuming storytelling, and an artful combination of language styles. If you're prepared for a substantial and rewarding reading journey, this book will easily leave you eager for more. I honestly can’t wait to hear Floe’s journey next.

Refreshingly surprised with this (kind-of) dual timeline, otherworldly, royalty…not royalty…novel that highlights: romance, family saga, otherworldly creatures, fight til the death massacres… and…so much more!!

I’m not really sure what I was expecting with this new to me author, but…it was terrific! And, it sounds like there will be more coming in this series…so…yay!!

River is living in current day Canada with her Dad and her little sister…who is very ill. When she is rushed to the hospital, River follows, but gets caught up with meeting one of the docs…
Next thing she knows…she’s not in Kansas anymore! 🫣. (Ontario really…)

This. Is. The. Opening!!!!! 😮

As she’s trying to get her bearings and figure out what the heck is going on…well, she starts to meet people from this other world…. One that exists in the late 1800’s. One that closed off any way of getting back to earth centuries ago… One that she thinks might have just what her sister needs…to live!

And…one that has a very unique language…and…capybaras! I’ve only seen them in a game I play online!! So, color me happy!!

Ok. That’s all I’m giving you. And trust me, this is just a drop in the bucket. The audiobook is 17+ hours!! 😮👀

4 1/2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 for me, rounded up to 5!

#OfBloodAndLight (The Thule Cycle, #1) by #CamillaMonk and narrated nicely by #SarahKisco and #BrennenBlotner.

Thanks so much to #NetGalley and #Yaypub for an ARC of the audiobook which is due to be released on 10/31/24…so, very soon! Look for it then!

ARC from NetGalley

4.5 stars rounded up.

This was close to a 5-star for me. It's just a bit too long and meandering. The writing is excellent. The characters are interesting and dynamic. The worldbuilding is fantastic. We get to see a few different places here that were really unique and magical. The magic system was also intriguing, though I would have liked it expanded upon. I was also a fan of the humour.

"In another drawer, she finds a sheaf of fashion plates featuring detailed instructions on how to style your hair so that you, too, can look like a sentient chandelier this season."

"It's my second awkward and silent carriage ride in less than twenty-four hours: I'm getting the hang of this. The trick is to pointedly avoid each other's eyes and keep your expression as inviting as a gas station restroom. You may choose to ramp up the tension by slowly stroking your capybara like a supervillain"

This book is described as a bodice ripper. A bodice ripper it is not. Nary a bodice gets ripped. There are 1-2 intimate scenes, but they are vague and not why you should be reading this book. It is a romance, and the romance is written well, but don't go into this expecting smut.

We start off with River in modern day Toronto, but this is a portal fantasy with a historical romance flare, and so soon River's cell is dead with no way to recharge it, and she has to wear crotchless ginch for practicality's sake.

I was quite delighted to find that this book was most excellent, having been so greatly disappointed in my last few reads. Were it a bit shorter, or perhaps arranged slightly differently, I would have given it 5 stars.

Welcome to Thule with its Victorian values and Arthurian memories because yes Arthur and Merlin were real not myth ! Perhaps not much of a welcome though for River as she’s kidnapped from Earth due to her uncanny resemblance to a runaway Duchess. The Duke is cold and aloof but the alternative to staying with him is definitely worse yet River is determined to get home . This world full of magic is dying and as River gets closer to answers about why she finds herself falling in love but around her are lies, trickery and deceit !
Oh my such a fun idea to give the Arthurian legend a bloody twist and yes pun intended ! The idea that blood calls to blood and feeds the land was very original and then to pair it with the impossibly fussy Victorian lifestyle made for often hilarious results as corsets and crinolines definitely don’t help our heroine. Oh yes you will like River as she is fiercely loyal and not shy in speaking her mind. As for Harkin it took a while to see beneath his posturing but if you want a perfect gentleman with morals then he’s definitely your man ! The side characters added greatly to my enjoyment as they enriched the plot and the bad guys are absolutely truly heinous but then who doesn’t love a good villain ? Definitely not what I expected and all the better for it .
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This is one of my best reads for 2023.

Camilla Monk's books are my Ichor and I need more of them as soon as possible.

Everything in this book was written beautifully and skillfully.

- The great:

* The world building and the background story of it.
* The amazing characters. We get the smart and funny female MC and the gentle, compassionate and skillful Knight male MC (thank God for that).
* I loved the twists and turns in this story. They gripped me and made me cheer and dance awkwardly at some point in the book. (If you get a dance out of me then it means you made my day).

Now the AWESOME

- The bonds, relationships and friendships, how fast both MCs created such bonds, I actually loved that.
- The language, it had me wonder how did C. Monk think about it.
- All the feelings from Hadrian and his soft heart. I mean that man is a precious gem River should treasure.
- The nickname/endearment. Step aside ( overly used  Kotyonok and sunshine because"Koimabona" is the best endearment a fictional man shall ever use, well that and Biscuit) can someone please call me Biscuit or Koimabona?

It has been a great read and I enjoyed every part of it. C. Monk worked hard on this book and it shows. This book will forever be on my favorite books shelf along with the Spotless series.

Like nothing I've read before!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌶️.🫑(Lots of angst and 2 mild intimate scenes)
🧙🏻‍♂️ Arthurian legend with a unique magic system!
⚔️ Lots of action and adventure
🫂 Found family, sort of (avoiding spoilers 😉)

This was such a unique read and was packed with so much action and adventure! Our FMC River, a modern young woman living in Toronto, finds herself thrown into a world of Arthurian legends she never could have imagined called Thule! She forms alliances with some of the knights of the round table to prove her innocence for crimes she hasn't committed and desperately trying to get back to Toronto. Throughout this whirlwind of a completely new world (language, magic, capybaras, and all!) River discovers deeply guarded secrets about herself, the dwindling prosperity of Thule, and how they're connected. We have a swoon-worthy MMC, Sir Hadrian, who gives Maxantarius vibes from Daughter of No Worlds. There are some spectacular side characters who I hope we see again that offer many different avenues for further additions to book 1. Sorry if my review seems a bit vague but I'm trying to not spoil anything because there are sooo many unexpected plot twists 🤯 This book is so under hyped and I can't wait to get my fellow readers onto this wild ride!

✨ Thank you Netgalley for the audiobook version of OBAL, all views are honest and my own. The dual narrators were fantastic and they really captured the essence of River and Hadrian. The use of minimal sound effects was also very well done and added depth to the experience while listening ✨

First off, I absolutely loved this book even though I was pulled out of the story a few times pondering word choices. OF BLOOD & LIGHT is a unique take on Arthurian legend that just draws the reader deep into the story. That’s the only hint I am giving about the plot itself. You will have to read the book for more info.

I will say however that the world building is first rate. The author has also done an excellent job skirting that fine line between being beautifully descriptive and being overly wordy.

I was slightly thrown off by the age difference between the main characters in the very beginning but I quickly found myself cheering the romance on. The characters are so well written that they jump off the page and I honestly couldn’t see them with a different partner. The reader really gets to know all of the main characters really well including the capybara.

The only thing that kept this book from being a five star read was some of the word choices. I just couldn’t picture a modern college student majoring in Biology using a medieval French word to describe the scenery. If I had the ability to rate this book 4.5 stars I would.

I received a review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Thule Cycle #1.5
by C. Monk

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Novellas & Short Stories, Romance, Sci Fi & Fantasy

I rarely read novellas, but as I'd read the first Thule story, this was just like continuing, in that I knew all the major characters and the world setting so it was fine for me. It was like joining old friends on a new adventure.
I'm so glad we got Sfjona as a main character, I hoped for that after the Dance(s) with Sir Natameus Bedivere of Bedrydant in the last book.
Of course they're opposites in so many ways, not least in social standing but Sir Bedivere isn't going to let that stand in his way. Tall and imposing he may seem, but to Sfjona he is gentle, pursuing slowly and carefully, always conscious of the need to not frighten her off.
Of course its not just a romance, but one with the wonderful Arthurian type whimsy and regulations, Capybaras, ( behaving badly) and now some creatures that may or may not be more than a child's fairy tale.
It all adds up to a quick, delightful read, very unusual in the range of fantasy. I love finding something fresh and new.

Stars: Five, a fun, short read that I really enjoyed.
