Suken Anisaria is just starting out as a bounty hunter in a floating city riddled with crime, corruption and magical convergences powering everything from rail-cars to crossbow bolts. He’s got years of training under his belt, a hatful of his dead uncle’s debts to pay off, and the talent and drive to make it in the dangerous world of bounty hunting. When a warrant goes up for a notorious thief-turned-murderer, he jumps on the chance to take it, knowing that success will cut years off of his career advancement. Hunting’s never easy, but this warrant’s harder than most. The thief the broadsheets named “Greencloak” is rumored to be a master of disguise and is infamously solitary, making it damn near impossible to find leads on him. But Suken’s got a few contacts that give him an edge on the competition. He’s certain that he’s got this case in the bag… but the whole job goes sour when he learns that Greencloak is being framed. With an assassin shadowing his every step, a shady underground organization determined to stop him from bringing the truth to light, and the guards convinced that he’s complicit in the crime, Suken's only remaining option is the most drastic one – teaming up with the notorious thief in a last-ditch attempt to clear both of their names.
Lyndsey Luther weaves a great tale of the cycle of violence under a corrupt justice system. Greencloak drops us in the center a magical world that isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. There’s a grim underbelly to this society, and we are given a front row seat to how poorly those without power and money are treated: as expendable, as disposable, and as pawns for schemes to keep people in power. What do you do when the law has failed you? How do you get justice when it is wrongly given?
Greencloak’s titular character is a Robin Hood-esque figure who, alongside bountyhunter Suken, are trying to answer these exact questions in their own two ways. Greencloak is focused on revenge, but Suken is determined on getting justice. The chemistry between this two characters is immediate, and their personalities play off each other in such a fun and interesting way, pushing each of them to question their beliefs and understandings of the world around them.
This book took me on a rollercoaster of a ride, and I could barely find it in me to put the book down. It is truly as close to a perfect story as I could hope for, my ONLY criticism of it is that the main characters fall unconscious after many of the altercations. This one trope felt a bit repetitive, but the action sequence preceding this was always entertaining and high energy.
If you don’t currently have Greencloak on your shelf, you absolutely need to add it. It is a MUST READ.
What a great start to a fun new fantasy series! The characters were engaging, and the story kept me riveted - and up too late at night reading - from the very start. It took turns I definitely didn't expect, and Lyndsey Luther has created a truly unique world in which to set her story. Very much looking forward to book two!
One of those books that you plan on putting down to go to bed but then by the end of the chapter you're to hooked to stop! The Audio version is easy to keep focused on with both the story and the various voices used to indicate who is talking. something I think more audiobooks should do. I'm loving it whole heartedly!
Great start to a new fantasy series. Does a good job of introducing the cast of characters and having you be emotionally invested in their well-being and the actions of the story. The nuances of the the world they are in are fascinating, I wish there was more lore in regards to that. Overall, looking forward to the next installment!
The book feels like a combination of The Lies of Locke Lamora and Six of Crows (worse than Lamora and better than Crows, in my opinion), it is rather full of various tropes that come with the genre, BUT it is fairly well-written, so even though it's not really that original, I had fun reading it.
