Vampires aren't as scary as the serial killers they hunt.
Mathias Hawthorne's first memory as a vampire was his beloved Victoria limp in his arms, her blood dripping from his mouth. Despising the demon inside, he channels his anguish into bringing justice to the true monsters—those who hunt their fellow human beings. He becomes a crime scene investigator, combining his vampiric abilities with modern science to track them down. The idea of helping one of the villains is revolting...until it becomes necessary.
The daughter of a wealthy and powerful CEO has been abducted. A ransom letter demands that her mother step down within 48 hours or the girl will die. The CEO can’t relinquish control, not even to the police, and co-opts the investigation to ensure her enemies pay. It's all Mathias can do to keep from draining the vicious woman on the spot.
Mathias is determined to protect the innocent, even if it means going up against his superiors. As he scrambles to follow the clues, allies turn into enemies, and each lead uncovers another layer of deception. The closer he gets to the culprit, the clearer it becomes the case isn’t what it seems—and something more sinister waits in the shadows.

So you want to know the person behind the words of your latest novel. Look no further! This is me.
Hi, I'm Kari. I love romance books... in fact I read them through my most impressionable years - so just call me a hopeless romantic. I love when one character fights for the love of another and triumphs in the end. So when you're reading my book, know that you will get your happily ever after!
Twists are a natural part of life. Whether on the pages in a book or in the real world. Lets face it, things that keep us guessing are what makes it interesting. As I also love stories with twists, you will find I try to sneak them into my stories. Doesn't matter if it's romance or a mystery... so keep an eye out.
So, here is the basic break down. I am the oldest of 4 half brothers. I grew up in Utah and I live in Idaho. I burn the candle at 15 ends on a good day - which is why I get the compliment "You look tired" so often- HA.
Some of the things I fill my time with are my family, my business - both writing and teaching preschool, sewing, reading, baking, cake decorating, drawing, singing, home improvement, yard work... well, you get it.
I hope you pick up one of my books and it fills a few hours with entertainment. If I delivered, I would LOVE a review or mention! Don't be shy! Drop a line! I love to hear from my readers too.
Absolutely loved this story. You are immediately drawn into the life of this conflicted vampire and can't help but root for him. So descriptive that you feel like you are right there with Mathias and the crime scene crew. Written like a TV episode (would love to see it as one!) Short enough to read in one sitting - which I did - and it definitely left me craving more. Beware - you will get addicted to the writing of this amazingly talented pair of authors.
From the very first chapter I was drawn into a genre that I usually don't care for. The authors certainly have a gift for giving the focused character a personality that draws you into his life experiences. This was a "read" hard to put down and satisfying to follow Mathias's journey to the last page - still wanting more.
I started this novel with high hopes and I was not disappointed. Mathias is a monster, as monsters that is what he thinks he is. Very few people, over hundreds of years, have know his secret, and he is about to be betrayed by one of them. Vampires might be labeled monsters but what if that monster helps balance the weight of good and evil in the world? DO you really lose sleep at night if there is one less kidnapper in the world? No, me neither. You can read this as a thriller/crime novel and total ignore the he's a vampire trying not to smell the blood of people around them or hear their pulse when they stand at arms length. The crime story alone is wonderful. A powerful CEO has plenty of people mad at her since she closed the local canning factor in town so who kidnapped her daughter has Mathias and the rest of the police force losing sleep while they process evidence as fast as possible to find and rescue the girl. You feel the tension in the air, you will smell the trees as Mathias flees to the country side, You will sense something is not right RIGHT before the....well you'll have to read it and see for yourself. 10 stars
I am really enjoying this character. The authors' take on vampires is really interesting, too. I love it when authors can take an existing mythos and make it their own. This was a quick and satisfying read that made me want more.
intense!!! A deep dark immortal presence who buries down his primal urges to focus on the crime at hand. Mathias is a crime scene investigator, evidence collector, who sometimes goes off on his own when he doesn't feel the police he works with are doing their job. Throw in the disappearance of a rich and corrupt CEO and nothing will resolve its self smoothly. The intensity of Mathias, the flashbacks to his past that disturb him on a daily basis, the inclusion of you, the reader. THIS series better last for several more installments.
This was a thrilling first episode in the Mathias saga. After reading the beginning two short stories, I was beside myself waiting for Cutthroat to release! I was not disappointed. Lovers of crime shows and the paranormal will devour Mathias and demand more! Set up as the first episode in a season (like a tv series) this book gives you a mystery for the episode and the continuing season. I loved meeting a few key characters in Mathias’s life and seeing the dynamics between them and Mathias. I want more! Go grab Mathias Origins and Boston 2009 and then dig into this episode. You won’t be disappointed, you’ll be begging for more!
The story is written in a similar fashion to a police procedural tv show. Thus the characters are not very deep, but they aren't completely flat either. One recurring point is Mathias' struggle with his monster. The problem I have with this is that the struggle is too great. He's so distracted and at the edge of losing his battle to be good that there's no way he would actually be able to carry on with his job. He's supposed to be a CSI super star but his behavior doesn't line up with what would be required to achieve this status. Other than this one point, the story is well written and engaging. The action definitely drew me in and I enjoyed reading this from start to finish. I would definitely read more of Mathias' story in the future.
How did I miss this amazing series?? Well written and edited, awesome mix of crime, a little paranormal, some hinting of possible future romance. Yummmy!!
Matt isn't your ordinary crime scene geek, he is a vampire with a conscience. In a great twist on the vampire legend, he has a "demon" inside him. Even better, he can smell innocence and evil.
Throw in an annoying new co-worker, an arrogant cop, a kidnapping, and some fabulous villains -- I'm hooked.
Bonus points for being set in Maine, I was happy to travel to a place not found often in fiction.
Here we get into the story. Mathais hides his vampire, only letting it out after he kills a super bad guy (innocents are strictly off-limits!). I really enjoyed the scenes with Andrew the mechanic, and I'm excited to see what happens between Mathais and his coworkers. The ending was a little abrupt, but since I could start the second episode immediately, it gets a pass. Good plot, good character development, good side stories. 4/5
Vigilante vampire CSI - love it. Mathias is an intriguing lead and so far all the secondary characters are fascinating as well - I’m hoping there’s a bit more interaction with the police chief, the others in the CSI lab, and the detective. Fantastic worldbuilding, strong mystery, and an overarching suspense plot that immediately grabbed my attention. I’m looking forward to more.
Ready for a character to get under your skin? Mathias is a vampire who refuses to succumb to his nature. Instead of feasting on innocent humans, he will hunt the vile criminals of the earth to quench his thirst for blood.
This was a very good story. Very Dexterish vampire story. I read both the Origins story and the Boston 2009 short story, so was prepared for this story. If you have not read those first books I don't think you will enjoy this story as much because it just isn't long enough to develop a Sympathetic connection with Mathias without them. Since he is actually an Anti-hero, you need that background and depth to like him. These Three stories should all be packaged together for that purpose. Onto episode two.
Mathias: Cutthroat. This book is bloody marvelous. The writer did an excellent job of drawing me in leading me to believe that this is another normal vampire novel. Nope. This book is not that kind of book. Can I say that my favorite character is Mathias and Cleo. He was just awesome. Ok incredibly awesome. He’s a loner who likes to find the answers to his questions his own way. The book moves fast to Mathias time line. The plot was very interesting and logical. The story is entertaining and a thrilling read. I look forward to the next read. I give this book two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
