Broken Souls

Would you disrupt the balance of the universe to avenge your family?

Colette doesn’t have time for high school games. She doesn’t have time for her best friend’s schoolyard crush on her. She doesn’t have time for her brother’s overprotective behavior. And she certainly doesn’t have time for the new guy in her class, no matter how hypnotizing his eyes might be.

Three months ago, Colette Belrose was murdered.

Colette relives the fire every day. She can still feel the ropes that tore into her wrists as she fought to get free. She can still taste the smoke that infected her lungs and choked her. She can still smell her flesh burning as the flames consumed her. Worst of all, she can still hear the sound of her parents screams as they burned alive beside her.

Three months ago, Colette Belrose was brought back to life.

Thought only to be a myth, furies are reborn to protect the innocent from the same fate that they once suffered. They only have one rule: they must not hunt the ones who killed them no matter the circumstance.

Cursed with an insatiable thirst for vengeance and a blinding disregard for rules, Colette will find the man who killed her parents even if it kills her. Again.

I am a 24 year old Psychology student with only a couple semesters left. I was born and live in Alaska with my gorgeous beagle named Riley. He won't sit still for anything so getting a good picture of him is near impossible but I do try.

I have loved stories and fantasy my whole life. I first fell in love with fantasy tv shows and started writing fan fiction.

I started writing my own stories when I was 13 years old and wrote my first full length novel at 14! By 18, I had 3 novels written. Since then life has gotten pretty crazy and Im sad to admit that I haven't been writing much lately. But I have been editing!

Broken Souls, the first in the Of Blood and Fury series, is my first published book. Look for it in print and ebook through most major book sellers on October 5th.

Broken Souls tells the story of Colette Belrose, an 18-year-old Fury whose one goal is to get justice for her parents murder.

Thank you Toni for gifting me an e-arc copy of Broken Souls.

I really enjoyed this read as it has a perfect blend of mythology and urban fantasy. Written in both slow and intense pacing with interesting characters.
It took me a few chapters to get into the story but overall I liked it.

“Go to hell,” he says, poison in the words.
“What do you think, Luc?” I ask, prying off the crate’s lid. “Am I gonna go to hell?”
“Absolutely,” Lucas nods, sandy blond hair falling into his eyes. “But not for this.”

First of all, a huge thank you to the author, who sent me an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

As a huge lover of Greek mythology, I was immediately drawn in by the premise of this book: 17 year old Colette (or Cole) has been resurrected as a Fury, a deity of vengeance and retribution, after being murdered three months previously. Broken Souls is the story of Cole's journey of (supernatural) revenge for the death of her parents - a paranormal romance with a healthy dose of thriller, mythology and urban fantasy.

This was an enjoyable read with some unexpected (for me, at least!) plot twists and developments, and it was, overall, a great debut. The writing was well paced with witty dialogue (though perhaps a little too heavy on the sass to feel quite organic), and an interesting cast of characters. There were, however, a few elements that I felt detracted a little from the developing plot:

The primary issue I had was that the high school setting felt slightly off - Cole, and her friends (Luc, Zach and Riley, who are all Furies like herself) do not talk or behave like high school age kids, and spend most of their time either drinking, dancing in clubs with fake IDs, staking out to kill people for revenge, or seducing cops/bouncers in order to get their way. I realise that, on the face of it, most of the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer did exactly the same whilst in high school, but I really felt that the plot would have sat more comfortably in a college setting in this case. The writing is pretty gritty and dark, and the characters far too jacked, jaded, and honestly murderous for the high school setting to pull through. Cole, in particular, seemed too sassy, and perhaps a little too sexualised, to feel like she ought to be a high school student.

Perhaps because of the high school setting, the first half of the book suffered a little bit from characters falling into 2D categories - the overtly sassy, misunderstood heroine; the guy best friend who is in love with the heroine; the dark and mysterious new love interest; and the bitchy high school girls who are out for 'competition'. The book came into its own much more once it delved deeper into the mythology that underpinned the novel, which incidentally also took it away from the high school environment and gave us a whole heap more character development and background.

But, as I said above, it's the second half of the book where I felt the plot really got going - the plot twist was genuinely unexpected to me and really drew me in. It also really raised the stakes for the character relationship between Cole and Julien, which was something that had perhaps been a little lacking until that point, especially since the relationship between the two of them was somewhat toeing the line of enemies-to-lovers, yet not quite. The ending ramped up quickly and it was satisfying to see Cole finally get some kind of closure, but there were enough questions left unanswered to build on in the rest of the series.

Overall this was a good and exciting debut, and something that I think would appeal to fans of urban fantasy/thriller mixes. It is fairly dark (murder, death and mayhem galore) and likely most suited to fans of Kresley Cole, Kelley Armstrong or Nalini Singh. If you're looking for a good deal of sass, some dark and broody guys and a bit of mythological intrigue, then this is definitely for you!

Thank you to the author, Toni Miranda Jones, for providing me with a copy of her novel in exchange for an honest review!

After Colette’s boyfriend, Hayden, murders her and her family, she and her sister are brought back as Furies by a woman named Cecelia. The life of a Fury isn’t easy, they are released upon the world to kill the worst of humankind but the rule is, they cannot kill the person who killed them. Despite the rule, Colette is determined to get revenge on Hayden. But there are secrets and betrayals that pepper the path to him that she must face.

I really enjoyed this story. If I was only reading one book at a time, I would have finished this in no time. I actually had a hard time putting it down! There is a lot more to this story than I thought and I’m really excited to read what happens next. There definitely is a lot of explicit language and murder. It had it’s Greek mythology roots but it felt more like a mystery crime novel with the tiniest bit of magic thrown in.

Three pros & cons:

Pros:
1. Colette’s character was a fun narrator. She was so sassy and many of her lines had me cracking up.
2. The world building was interesting. I liked the role of the Furies and I won’t say any more to prevent spoilers but it was definitely well done!
3. I thought everyone’s backstories were really sad but well written. They matched the characters perfectly!

Cons:
1. I’m all for fun swears but sometimes it felt like that was all she ever said haha! Not necessarily a big con, it’s just something I noticed.
2. I love found families and I feel like that is what the author was trying to do with this friend group. But I feel like two of the friends just faded to the background a lot and I cared way less about them. I did however love their banter!
3. I think there is SO much happening in this story that sometimes it was hard to keep things straight towards the end. We get a lot of new characters and information in the last fourth of the book. I think more books in the series will help this specific con but it just was a little overwhelming at times.

This was a really great read and I would definitely recommend it to many readers! If fantasy is your passion I don’t know if this is going to have the magic for you. It definitely played less of a role than I was expecting it to. But if you like thrillers and mysteries I think you will really enjoy this story!

Firstly, I would like to thank the author for sending me an e-arc of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Broken Souls is the first book in the Of Blood and Fury series and tells the story of Colette who was murdered alongside her parents and sister three months ago when her boyfriend set their house on fire. She was brought back to life and is now a Fury whose purpose is now to deal out revenge and punish the evil. Furies are forbidden from exacting revenge on those that killed them but this rule is something Colette cannot follow. It is her (second) life's mission to hunt down her ex and make him pay for what he did to her and her family. She is joined in her mission by other Fury’s Lucas, Reilly and Zach who have become her second family.

Broken Souls is an urban fantasy based in greek mythology. Furies are such a unique and underutilised source of mythology in fiction and it was unique and interesting. I am a lover of greek mythology and while I am obsessed with sirens and Hades/Persephone (which is touched upon in Broken Souls) it was fun to branch out and read a broader range of mythology.

Colette is a great protagonist! She is tough and sassy with a no bullshit attitude and penchant for murderous revenge. Throughout the book we learn things about Colette’s past and life as things come up which made reading this book quite fluid and easy. The urban setting meant that not much world building was required and the reader is easily transported into the book.

There is the start of a friends to lovers or enemies to lovers romance in this book and this is so far the only book where I have enjoyed a love triangle. The men in this book are totally swoon-worthy and they both exist independently of Colette and I honestly cannot pick between them.

There are so many things to love in Broken Souls but at times, particularly at the start, the dialogue between characters felt a bit clunky and I wanted more mythology. I would have loved a bit of background on Furies at the start of the book to solidify the plot in the first third of the book. I was also a bit thrown by the author's use of the word “slut” and the subtle slut shaming that is mentioned. It seemed a bit “old school” for 2020.

Overall, I really enjoyed Broken Souls and the ending definitely left me ready for the sequel!

Thank you to the author for sending me an e-ARC of Broken Souls. I’d recommend to fans of urban fantasy (especially The Mortal Instruments) and anyone with an interest in Greek Mythology

Broken Souls follows Colette who was murdered alongside her parents three months ago in a house fire by a man she trusted. Now Colette has been brought back to life as a fury and she wants revenge. But furies are forbidden to hunt the ones that killed them and Colette must overcome her guilt and decide whether revenge is a price worth paying

Broken Souls ties together the betrayal and revenge of the Greek Myths with the mystery and tension of urban fantasy. I loved the isolated desert setting and the themes of justice and revenge. It has suspense, tension and mystery throughout and lots of unexpected plot twists that I couldn’t predict. I really appreciated how the novel stayed true to the themes of the original myths and this was especially explored in the second half as the myths were delved into further and the world expanded. The last half of the novel was particularly plot driven as the stakes were raised and the mystery began to unfold. I’d definitely recommend to mythology and urban fantasy lovers ✨

I want to start by saying thank you Toni Jones for sending me an ebook ARC in exchange for an honest review! Broken Souls was absolutely a delight to read! It combines Greek mythology, urbane fantasy, romance. All things I love! Collette, the 17 year old resurrected fury, is a sassy, fiery, and passionate female protagonist. She wants revenge for her parents death and will sacrifice pretty much anything to attain it. The dialog is extremely witty and the writing was very refreshing! Toni Jones has a unique voice that reels you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat through the entire novel! The only thing I wasn’t as thrilled about was the high school setting. I felt like Colette and her gang acted more like college age kids then high schoolers. There was drinking, partying and other more mature themes that better suited a college setting. Over all I enjoyed this book immensely! I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I am giving this book a 4.7⭐️ rating.

If you haven’t already I highly recommend checking this book out!

Broken Souls is about a girl named Colette who was murdered and brought back to life. She is now a “fury” whose sole purpose in life is to exact vengeance on those who hurt people.

Colette is a spit fire! She is feisty, and doesn’t give a flying squirrel about anything besides her need to kill her murderer, and living the life she was afraid to live before. There are times that I wanted to shake this chick and be like “Stop being a asswipe!” But id probably be the same in her position to be honest so I kind of bonded with this character a little in that sense.

My favorite character would be the cuddly yet deadly Skye! I absolutely loved the idea of her, and couldn’t help but have her be my favorite. Which is no surprise because I always fall for the animal sidekicks.

There was some plot twists that I definitely didn’t see coming, and I actually tried to guess them and figure it out. I enjoyed the mythology that was tied into the book. It was pretty fast paced which made it easy to continue reading.

All in all, a good read. I enjoyed it, and am curious to see what happens next!

*Thank you to the author for providing me a copy of your book! All opinions are my own.*

I never knew how much I enjoyed Greek mythology until recently and this book just solidified that. A fun and quick read about a 17 year old girl brought back from death as a Fury who is determined to get revenge for her family’s murder. I enjoyed the friend dynamic this book has and the plot twists had me up until way past my bedtime last night to finish it. I’ll definitely be continuing this when book 2 comes out. My only qualm was the slut shaming throughout the book. It was a bit excessive and not entirely necessary to the plot. Aside from that, I flew through it and enjoyed it😊

Broken Souls Follows Collete after her boyfriend (now ex) kills her whole family, including her.

Thanks to Ceclia her and her sister were brought back as furies. There are two rules furies must always abided by:
1. They can not kill the person who killed them
2. They can not kill anyone without their creators permission and can not create any furies without permission.

Collete is planning on breaking the first rule to get revenge for her family. Unfortunately she takes a very self destructive path and pushes away her brother and best friend on her quest for vengeance. I was honestly hoping that she would let her brother in and he would surprise her and help her get vengeance so she wouldn't have to break the first rule. Or she would let him in and he'd help her move away from her self destructive behaviour in a supporting way. I just really wanted to like him but ended up not liking him.

I did enjoy the story and how it slowly progressed and you start to discover more about her role as a fury. I didnt know much about this aspect of Greek mythology so finding more about it along with the story line was something that I loved.

I found this book as a slow build up type book. But the hints that the author gave kept me intrigued to know what was happening, especially with Julien... I loved the humour all the way through with it and how sassy Collete is.

This book was a good read with a good story line. My attention was held from the beginning to the end. The humor throughout the book is great. I especially liked the banter and name-calling between the characters. Cole is pretty gruff, but still my favorite character. Julien would be a real close second. Great book!

Amazing book! The plot twists caught me off guard, but I don’t wanna give away any spoilers. I got super attached to Julien and think they should just forgive him his sins already! I really got into it the most toward the end and OMG with the cliffhanger. I need the next book NOW!

This book had everything I wanted. Romance, Greek mythology, great friendships, and a kickass heroine that goes by the name of Colette Belrose! I could not have asked for more from this book! I loved all of the chapter openings with my whole being and all of the casts one liners where hilarious! I found myself laughing out loud multiple times throughout the book! That’s another thing I loved about it, it had the versatility to switch from humorous, to serious, to nerve-racking, to steamy! It also was paced extremely well. I was never bored and found myself not wanting to put it down. If you liked the mysterious romantic intrigue of Hush, Hush, the teens fighting demons of The Mortal Instruments, or the Greek Mythology and break neck pace from Percy Jackson I would HIGHLY recommend picking up this book! My only true complaint is that I wish it would have been longer😂 I also wish the fighting scenes had been more descriptive!! But I just love an unnatural amount of gore in my books so if you read this you’ll probably be fine with it😂 Overall, I LOVED this book and I think everyone should read it💛💛💛

Thank you to @authortonimjones for sending me an eARC. I enjoyed reading this one, ive not read a book about Furies before so it was an interesting read. The story is told from the POV of the main character Colette. We follow her and her friends as she searches for the man who killed her parents. I love Colette's strength, determination and protectiveness of her sister. She begins to learn more about the world she is now in and that perhaps those closest to her may not be telling the whole truth. It had me guessing right up until the end, I'd think I had it figured out and then bam something unexpected happens. I loved that about this book, and there are two characters that I am torn between 😂 there is a bit of a love triangle and so far I think it has been done well. Overall an enjoyable read and I am keen for book 2😊

🔥REVIEW🔥

I just finished Broken Souls by @authortonimjones and as a lover of Greek myths I really enjoyed this retelling!

Broken Souls follows Collette, who’s been resurrected as a Fury—a deity of vengeance and retribution, after being murdered three months ago—on her quest to take revenge.

Though I was hooked from the first chapter, the first half of the book is quite slow paced, but I had a fun time learning more about the furies and the other creatures such as Hades’ children. I think the story of the mythical beings’ and their purpose and origin in the modern world was very interestingly crafted and also not very hard to follow.

The writing also flowed easily, I really enjoyed the witty banter and there was a lot of dark and dry humor, it fits the characters well because they’ve gone through so much. And I really liked most of the characters, as well as the found families aspect😍—I wasn’t really invested in the romance though🙈

The story focuses more on Colette and while I think she’s great, I would’ve love if there was more about the other characters as well.

The second half of the book is definitely more fast paced, there’s a lot of action and even a few plot twists that were done really well, I didn’t see it coming at all!

Overall I think this was a very fun take on furies in the modern world and a good retelling. I’m sure anyone who loves myths would enjoy this! It’s also quite spooky, so if you’re looking for a quick spooky read this Halloween this could be it!🎃

Broken Souls comes out tomorrow on October 5, but you can read the first chapter on @authortonimjones ‘s website now!💜

Thank you @authortonimjones for sending me an E-arc of your book in exchange for an honest review🥰

Thank you so much to the author for sending me an e-arc of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Broken souls is the first instalment in the YA fantasy series of Blood and Fury and when I heard the book was based on Greek mythology I was super excited to read it!

The book is a YA Urban Fantasy and follows 17 year old Colette Belrose who is reborn as a fury- a creature of vengeance after being betrayed and murdered 3 months ago. Her only goal now is to seek revenge and kill the person responsible for the death of her parents.

I really enjoyed reading the book, although the beginning was kind of slow, the plot and pacing picked up after a couple of chapters and of course the unexpected plot twist which I definitely did not see coming had me reading the book till 2 am in the morning just to see how the book ended!

I liked the components of Greek mythology and reading about furies and their ability to feel the guilt of people, however I do wish the book would have delved in more into the mythology and fantasy elements which I felt was lacking.

The characters were interesting and sassy, however I do feel there was an overload of sass as the book progressed and I would have liked a little less sass?!! ( I can’t believe I’m saying this because I live for sassy characters)

The book ended quite abruptly and left many questions unanswered and all I wanted was to read the next book, but alas I guess I have to wait!

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and If you’re a fan of mythology, sassy main characters and a few demons thrown in for good measure then I definitely recommend you pick up this book!

Broken Souls is a story of dealing with the aftermath of betrayal, anger and revenge. Collette should have died in the fire her ex-boyfriend set that killed her parents, but she's given a new lease of life when she and her sister Melody were raised from the dead as Furies. Now Collette finds renewed purpose in her revenge, and she's determined to hunt Hayden down and make him pay for what he's done to her, even if it means breaking every rule in the Fury handbook. As Collette fights to avenge the people she loves, she uncovers more heartbreaking truths and betrayals about that night, and she learns that her murder was part of a much bigger plot by the forces of darkness to maintain their own power. The question becomes will Collette catch up with Hayden in time, or will the powers of hell come for her first?
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book by the author for review, and I am happy to say I absolutely loved this book. I adored the dark twists Jones took with classic Greek myths of Furies and demons and how she turns it into an dark and gritty tale of revenge. Collette is one of those anti-heroine characters you can't help but be intrigued by, morally grey in the best way. This isn't a story about forgiveness, but about how people can turn their grief into something else in order to survive. Every betrayal is more devastating than the next, and by the end of the book I was honestly rooting Collette on as she seeks to burn down everything and everyone who took her family away from her. I really did devour this book. It's filled with action, fiery and feminist anger, and a darkness that had me begging for more.

Thank you to the author for sending me an E-ARC. This story is a mix of fantasy and mystery and is for fans of greek mythology. It follows Colette, an 18 year old girl who was brought back to life as a fury.
I was hooked from the first chapter but as i kept reading, i found that the first half was a bit slow-paced and focused more on the characters and since I didn’t connect with any character, i kind of lost the excitement. However, the second half was more plot-driven,ventured more into greek mythology and had some plot twists.
Our main character “Colette” is a sassy high school student whose main focus is to avenge her murdered parents, she is portrayed as the badass female protagonist however I thought she always relied on the help of her friends and was really annoyed by how much she complained about everything.
Also, something I didn’t like was how she was sometimes sexualized and how some relationships were a bit possessive.
Overall, i liked the idea of the book but i just wasn’t fascinated by the characters.
My original rating is 2.5 stars but since I can’t do that on goodreads, i went with 2 stars.

Initial Thoughts

I was super excited when the author, Toni Miranda Jones, reached out to me on Instagram and asked if I wanted to feature this book. I love Greek mythology and retellings and was very intrigued by the idea of a fury-centric story.

Some Things I Liked

Nods to Greek mythology. As mentioned above, I loved that feature of this story. It’s one of those tropes that will never get old for me. Retellings or reimagining of stories is one of my favorite types of story.
Enemies to lovers and snarky banter. I really enjoyed the romance element in this story and while I normally dislike love triangles, I actually liked it here. I thought the balance between Colette’s love interests was well done and honestly, I’m not sure which I prefer because I liked them both for different reasons.

One Thing I Wasn’t Crazy About

Super dark themes. This book is NA or even Adult in themes and it was definitely darker than I was expecting.

Series Value

I would stick with this series. I think the bones of the concept are very interesting and I liked getting to know these characters. I think the series has a lot of potential to expand on the mythological world that Toni created.

Final Thoughts

I enjoyed this book. I am always a bit hesitant to take requests from Instagram but I am very pleased to say that in this case, it worked out really well.
