There are usually two types of luck, but only one seems to visit a certain Dungeon Core…
Being in charge of her own dungeon instead of just being an Assistant to a Dungeon Core was a unique experience for Tacca GloomLily, especially after her “bad luck” resulted in her soul being sucked into a Core. Thankfully, she persevered through the strange experience and created a dungeon that she knew Raiders would say was suitable for “beginners”, otherwise known as brand-new Raider Clan recruits. After opening up her dungeon to the world, her entrance was finally located by two local Hill Dwarf farmers, who barely managed to survive their exploratory delve only through Tacca’s intervening actions. With them safely away and able to tell everyone about her dungeon’s presence, she now has to prepare for the flood of Raiders that she hopes will soon appear.
Along with Shale IronSchist, her own Dungeon Assistant, Tacca has to develop a way to maximize the few Core Improvement Points she is planning on receiving from the Raider’s presence in her dungeon, as well as what she gains from their deaths. Not only that, but she needs to start thinking towards the future; along with restocking and maintaining her original dungeon, she has to expand into a new section that can adapt to Raiders that grow too powerful to benefit from what she currently has to offer.
But not all is as calm outside of her dungeon as it seems. Locally, the two Hill Dwarves that first found her dungeon set up their village to accommodate the influx of new people; however, Raiders from the Clan aren’t the only ones to arrive: Merchants come looking to send their own people to the dungeon, bringing their own problems and dangers with them. Globally, Dungeon Cores that shouldn’t be destroyed are ending up shattered, and no one can seem to figure out why.
And just her luck, Tacca seems to be in the middle of it all…
This story contains Dungeon Core elements such as dungeon construction and defense, LitRPG/GameLit mechanics such as character progression and stats, and contains NO harems/sexual content or profanity.
This dungeon core LitRPG was fairly consistent in quality with the first book in the series. It is an average sort of tale.
This second book had Tacca continuing to build her dungeon and welcoming her first real raiders. We also got a bit of mystery with the subplot about the mysterious core killings that had the Fairy leaders worried.
The story was OK. I feel like this series has decent ideas but never quite gets the execution right. Some of the happenings suck me in and are quite interesting but there are a lot of dull spots that drag the story down while both the world building and characters feel a tad vague and simplistic. In particular the dungeon building is really boring while the volume of stat readouts are super dull in audio!
I’ll press onto the third book as this series does has some fun elements and I got the 4-book audio box set for a single credit but this series will never be a favourite.
Rating: 3 stars.
Audio Note: Miles Meili did a good job with the audio.
Series is sliding into a bit more conventional scheme, but as good as most Brooks' stories.
(except for one which I've just reviewed, that is)
The continuing adventures of our dungeon fairy turned dungeon core continue in this entry that is a bit more of a classical declinaison of the dungeon themes. Dungeon, delving, the dungeon city, some experiment, the enemies, and all those elements get used here as Tacca moves ahead with her plan to cheat her way to greatness. Meanwhile, politics are rearing their ugly heads, and the hidden enemies make their final appearance.
My only regrets is that M. Brooks writes too classic a tale, so you know there's a book coming, so the grand finale isn't what it seems. But even if you know it has to happen, and you have chekov's gun already emplaced on the wall, you are still surprised by...
... how little XP she gets for her efforts. Dammit.
This book felt To me like it was just staging For the next book, I'm hoping the next book the stakes get higher and higher, not just random events that happens out of blue.
The book wasn't labeled very well what it was the second in a series so I ended up missing the first one. As a Dungeon core book, it's pretty average. Some unique ideas, but just kind of middling.
Return to the Wynterlock Mountains to Plumb the Depths of Gairth's Most Unique Dungeon.
Firstly, this is the second book in a series. If you haven't read the first book already, do so. Sure, you can read the recap of the first novel, but isn't that a bit like going to a five stare restaurant and eating the menu before the five course feast you came for?
Tacca Gloomfairy, Dungeon Fairy converted into a Dungeon Core, has become a popular Dungeon for Raiders to delve. Unfortunately, popularity draws foes as easily as friends and, if they cannot control her, Taaka's foes will spare no effort to destroy her. Fortunately, for Taaka, she's smarter than your average Dungeon Core.
This novel will likely appeal to fans of the Fantasy and LitRPG genres, fans of Mr. Brooks other works, and RPG players.
3.5/5, much of the book drags and it is lacking better world building, instead just setting up "mysteries" we can't even speculate on as we know next to nothing about the world.
Not sure the author understands caves or topology. We had it already in the last book with underground forest rooms that never concerned itself where the light comes from, but now we get mountain ranges.. in a cave.. which doesn't explain scale or how it even looks with the room walls. It makes the dungeon very hard to picture, except very abstractly.
Still pretty fun book overall, there is a mystery, even if it isn't be best, and while I have seen better theoretical dungeons, it is workable.
This book continues the adventures of our dungeon fairy turned dungeon core, Tacca GloomLily. This book is consistent with standard Dungeon Core themes aka delving the dungeon, building up the city outside, Tacca experimenting, more delving, enemies, rinse and repeat.
The chapters from dungeon fairy boss, flesh out their society and the ongoing mystery. Tacca moves ahead with her plan to use her Fairy knowledge to help her build her way to being a great dungeon. Outside politics are coming into the dungeon and putting Tacca at risk.
#LitRPG #DungeonCore #SwordandSorcery Fantasy #Magic
The story is a bit more consistent than the first book. Tacca is often boring but the dwarves and adventurer town developing around the dungeon is pretty solid. There are occasional chapters from dungeon fairy bosses, which fleshes out their society a little more.
Audiobook quality is awful. You can hear where different takes are edited together and the audio is not consistent at all. I assume it was recorded from home in an improvised studio.
Another amazingly well written book by Jonathan Brooks!
I am absolutely loving this series so far, and book two did not disappoint. The world building and the introduction of the larger conflict meshed perfectly with the continuing dungeon development and kept me reading from start to finish.
Really. I love the path that the series is headed and the twist of the fairy as a core. Even when stepping away from the dungeon I am never upset and wish to rush back. Sterge's point of view is interesting as well. Especially as he isn't as intelligent as his counter part.
Wonderful read and pages turning themselves. Only complet would be it was finishen too quickly and the information upon levering a bit too detailed for my taste
Fairly niche series but if you like dungeon core books it's pretty good and a unique perspective. It's also kid friendly without any of the garbage you get in some series. I'll definitly keep reading it.
I really enjoyed the world-building for the gamelit aspects. I loved the descriptions of progress, dungeon room building, and unlocking new variants. I definitely want to read more.
The interplay between the merchants and raiders raises a lot of questions, and possible misdirection. But the best part of this series continues to be the dungeon fairy turned core and her ingenious ways of using her abilities.
the adventure continues. she is now a core and still yet no less wondrous. i am in love with this series so far. loving the dungeon adventures. Tacca is so smart and skilled. Introduction of these blue 6 arm beast! love those. cant wait for the next installment!
