As our band of survivors flee the city, we cling to one hope: Danger lies behind us, not ahead. A safe haven beckons, if only we can reach it. New dangers threaten us from every side. We struggle to hold on to each other, to love, to hope, and to the promise of tomorrow.
Maelstrom is book 2 in the World Fallen series and unfortunately not as good as I was hoping for. While I enjoyed book 1 I did find it a little slow and I had wished for more outside influences but I didn't need just about every problem to happen to the group. First we have an accident, then a crazy cult leader, a deranged widow and finally white supremacist. Really did we need all that in one book? Sorry it was tedious and honestly I had a hard time finding the desire the continue reading. What I did enjoy was Mac and Ripper's continued growing bond and Mac finally realizing she is perfect for Ripper. Kyle definitely grow as a character and while Mac is no longer his I loved how he moved to a friendship with her. I liked the additions to the group and was a little sad to see Kyle leave. His book is next and at this time I will most likely read it.
***I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.***
Wow there’s a lot going on here. Our group flee Portland as the city burns. Then it’s just one disaster/situation after another. Yes the new world is dangerous and just plain scary but for me it was just one disaster too many.
But it’s an interesting read and I’m continuing on with Kyle’s book Bedlam next.
I have to admit that I’m still struggling with Mac.
We were CONSTANTLY stumbling into new troubles. There was very little work on the relationship. But also I was just bored. It was all plot and no characters.
Every Trope of a bad guy or bad group that is possible in an apocalypse showed up. And I struggle to care anymore.
Maelstrom by Susanna Strom is book two in her World Fallen series.
Kenzie, Ripper, and the rest of their group flee a burning Portland en route to Valhalla, an isolated ranch. Can the group stay together and thrive, especially Kenzie and Ripper?
Susanna Strom continues the World Fallen series with a second successful sci-fi thriller. Maelstrom reads well as a standalone, but there is backstory provided in book one that gives depth to the characters. The author reveals the story through the alternating viewpoints of the major characters with appropriate chapter headers to avoid confusion. The romance between Kenzie and Ripper expands and romance begins to develop in other areas, as well. There is plenty of action, though it seems too drawn out in places. Overall, I enjoyed Maelstrom and give it 3 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to readers of science fiction romance.
My thanks to Independent Publishers Group, Cougar Creek Publishing LLC, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
Ok if honest I hadn't seen the previous book in this series so went in a bit blind but the synopsis certainly caught my interest. As I type our world is in turmoil due to a pandemic so reading a book about a world gone to pot after a deadly flu outbreak in theory should be a no no but actually I loved the characters so much that I found this a page turning read. Kenzie is fleeing Portland, a city that's been ravaged with Ripper a very deadly warrior who will do anything to protect her. Accompanied by her ex boyfriend, a doctor and Rippers dog they find themselves out of the frying pan and well and truly into the fire constantly. Trying to find a safe place in this devastated new world puts them all in danger and I was gripped as everything played out. I suppose this is technically dystopian but it didn't feel futuristic. It clearly is a romance but I found it to be more an adventure story as these characters keep getting involved with various truly heinous villains. I did find the characters to be very interesting and there are several who could very easily have their own book. I really enjoyed this and will certainly look out for more from this author. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
This is book #2 in the World Fallen series. Kenzie, Ripper, and their motley band of survivors barely escaped Portland before the whole city burned. They are looking for a safe haven at Valhalla ranch with a friend of Kyle. Along the way they run into so many dangers as the world continues to fall into chaos with the flu pandemic. I'm loving this series. When the world falls apart all the crazies come out! I can't wait to find out what happens next, especially with Kyle's part of the story. Thank you to Susanna Strom and Cougar Creek Publishing for the opportunity to read this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The views and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This picks up right where book 1 leaves off. No cliffie. Yay! It was a bit difficult to read in some spots because, dang, the post apocalyptic world is a dangerous place, lol. Loved it!
In MAELSTROM we go deeper and further into a world of destruction, turmoil and hate. It’s crazy, that in just a few months since the flu hit, how far removed from humanity people can get. We saw at the end of PANDEMONIUM how Ripper finds his way back to Mac. But event after event in MAELSTROM keeps tearing them apart. I have to wonder after a certain point if maybe the universe is trying to tell them something or maybe the universe is testing them on how much they mean to one another.
Prepare yourself now for the crazy that happens, the fear of what could happen, and prepare yourself for the flood of emotions that will be pouring from the pages. MAELSTROM will own every bit of you once you are done. If you’re anything like me, you may be walking around in a stupor, sad you finished it way too quickly. This series has consumed my every thought. Loved every single word!! 5 Stars!!
I have secretly friended the Author on all social media so I know if she is not writing. She needs to hurry up with the third installment. I'M WAITING, MS. STROM! Seriously put these on your list and read them. Pandemonium 1 and Maelstrom 2 ... and a 3rd on the way. *spoilers possible from here on out.
Remember this is all during a PANDEMIC! So strap in if it feels a bit too close to home.
So Mac, Ripper and the crew who survived the city flee as it burns down around them only to be thwarted by terrorist activity en-route to their new destination. They can't go back to burning Portland but they can turn around and go a much longer route to their safe haven, IF they can move quickly enough because their escape is quickly being blocked off and only death would be left in it's wake. Now they have to navigate the dangers, hidden and those that ride right up to them wanting to take everything they have for survival. OH and don't forget that terror attack cause ya all KNOW they get tangled up in that mess.
Note from last review in Pandemonium; my cats are well, thank you. Although their pleas to the Governor for Legislation to pass stating unequivocally that Cats are the Lords and Masters of all the land and human slaves must do as they say Immediately, well he has yet to respond. I believe he is a dog person. Know that when the Revolution comes our backs will be the first against the walls! - That's you too Susanna... you too!
This was not nearly as entertaining as the first book. I don't like when an author momentarily abandons a character's... character, simply as a device to further a plotline. It feels like the integrity of that character (and the story itself) is compromised when he suddenly acts counter to who he has been from the beginning. As such, I found it highly unlikely that Ripper, a 1%er and FORMER ARMY RANGER, would have ignored the instincts screaming at him that something was off and to NOT leave an injured Mac alone with people he didn't like or trust. If I figured out- based on Ripper's own inner thoughts- that it was some kind of a setup, then I don't buy that Ripper wouldn't have come to that same conclusion. And then, when the situation was just right, the guys are able to correctly figure out precisely what went down and move to make a timely rescue.
Super convenient!
I get that an author would want certain exciting things to happen in her story, but I don't appreciate when they force it to happen by making their characters go temporarily clueless.
Plus, too much manufactured drama gets exhausting, especially when it's one scenerio aftrer another with hardly a break in between. I couldn't face any more after the Cult Camp Liberation (@48%) and had to call it a DNF. And, I'm not sure if I'll be moving on to Kyle's book.

The book flowed incredibly slow (I thought I was never going to get done), while there are a few plot holes, over all it was ok. I didn't think of quitting the book, which is always a plus. I did put it down & do other things before picking it back up, rather than read straight thru. While this was a good conclusion for the couple (Mac/Kenna & Ripper) to have a sort of "Happy for Now" situation (due to the world crisis they are struggling thru), it lacked something- compelling me to want to continue with the series. I found I liked the couple for the most part, but felt that I really didn't see them as a cohesive couple. They had that "odd couple" feel to them thru book 1 & 2. But my biggest complaint, that there were too many "crisis" situations that seemed to all resolve rather quickly. I would have rather had less situations and more intense problems & solving those situations for one or two, instead of the many-many mini situations that arose in this plot. I also felt like some of the secondary characters weren't strong enough to make into main characters for continuing the series. I never really liked Kyle, & yes, he did mature a bit from the beginning, so there's no "want" to read his story.
I read the first book in this series back in October and enjoyed it, so I was left really looking forward to this book releasing! I then missed this book releasing last month, so I quickly grabbed a copy once I realized it had released and made it my next read! After reading, I can say that I enjoyed this book more than the first book! The plot had me hooked right from the first chapter and I had a hard time putting it down until I had finished it! The plot also developed at the perfect pace and it had a lot in it! I also wasn't sure what direction the plot was going to go in, but I felt like the author did a fantastic job and there were a few surprises! There was plenty of romance in the plot as well, which I loved, and it allowed for a few seriously hot scenes and plenty of sexual tension! There was also action and suspense in the plot, which added a lot to it and made me enjoy it more! The characters were again amazing and made this book even better! “Mackenzie” Mac was the main female character, and in this book I felt like she had grown a lot from the first book! She was more kick-ass and more in control! She also went through a situation by herself and I felt like she wouldn't have been able to handle it if she hadn't went through what she had in the first book! Mac also held her own and I loved her with her love interest! Ripper was the main male character and love interest of Mac! I loved Ripper in this book! He was seriously hot and again very alpha male! It was also easy to see how much he loved Mac and he wanted to keep her safe anyway he could! Ripper had also changed from the first book and he was more open and wanted to be around his friends and for them to stick together! He was very focused in this book and knew what the group had to do! I loved that this book was written from mainly Mac and Ripper’s point of views! I was expecting it to be because the first book was written from dual point of view and the synopsis gives the impression that it’s going to be! I’m really happy that it was because it helped me connect more with both characters and Mac and Ripper also spent some time apart and went through some situations alone, so it allowed for a lot more things to happen in the plot! I loved the addition of some chapters being written from two secondary characters point of views as well! I now can’t wait to read the next book in this series! It says that it won’t release until the end of June, which isn’t that long of a wait, but I’ll be on pins and needles to get my hands on it and ill be reading it as soon as it does! I can't wait to find out what's going to happen next, even though the book is going to focus on a secondary character, I hope that Mac and Ripper will make appearances in it! This book was also left at the perfect place to lead into the next book! The cover for this book is also seriously hot! I loved it as soon as I saw it and I love how well it matches the cover for the first book! The cover model is also the perfect Ripper and I love that it's the same cover model!
This was much much better than the first one, and that's probably because there's finally something almost always going on this time. Did I love it? No. But I was thrilled it didn't take me forever to finish. I still dislike Kenzie though. She just always annoyed me with so much of what she did. Her weird habit of licking Ripper at the most ridiculous times was also off putting. And how she always thought that wanting to submit to Ripper made her less of a "strong woman" (something I would never describe her as anyway) just ticked me off. Ripper was still the swoon worthy alpha male, and I was glad to see Kyle grow up as much as he did and become a more dependable person.
Like I said though, the story itself was much better. If you ignore the constant drama queen theatrics about how Kenzie was so lucky to get Ripper back and she never wants to let him out of her sight again. We pick up right where we left last book with this group heading out to Valhalla. It's not long before they encounter trouble with the route they were going to take being blocked by somebody blowing up a dam. Forcing them to take the long way. During which they suffer accidents and encounter deranged cult leaders. Finally escaping from those crazies, and with a couple new people in their group, they do eventually make it to the ranch. Only to find out that it has been taken over by a group that fancies themselves Nazis. The plan had always been to take the ranch back and free Bear who has been chained and forced to work it, but when the good doctor also gets taken they have run out of time. They come up with a new plan with Ripper and Kenzie right in the middle of it. Not surprisingly, it doesn't go as planned at all. But at the end of the day, they do take the ranch providing a safe haven for them all. At least for now, anyway.
I was actually a little surprised that it was only 2 books for Ripper and Kenzie to find they happy ending. Next we move on to Kyle deciding to see if he can find out if his family is still safe, and maybe find his own happiness. Honestly though, I don't really plan on reading it. I was thrilled to have enjoyed this one more than the first, but it wasn't enough to make me want more.
Non-stop Thrills, Enduring Love, and Spice This book delivers a thrilling post-apocalyptic adventure laced with a heartwarming romance and a touch of spice. While the action is relentless, with the characters constantly facing new dangers, the story also explores themes of friendship, found family, and overcoming personal limitations.
The first half throws our characters into a desperate struggle for survival. We see the weight of loss – particularly the death of Miles – hanging heavy over the group as they flee their compromised safehouse. However, amidst the chaos, a highlight is the transformation of Kyle. From a sheltered rich boy, he evolves into a courageous protector, fiercely loyal to his newfound family. Witnessing his growth and the rekindled friendship between him and Mackenzie adds a layer of warmth to the harsh realities of their world.
MacKenzie is more than just a damsel in distress waiting for rescue. She's a resourceful survivor who constantly seeks solutions, formulating plans and taking initiative. This is a fantastic portrayal of a strong female lead who relies on her own intelligence and bravery, even as she trusts Ripper's unwavering support.
If you crave the high-octane tension of The Walking Dead but yearn for a more hopeful narrative, this book is for you. It delivers a satisfying blend of edge-of-your-seat action, relatable characters, and a deeply satisfying romantic arc. The story is filled with enough grit, emotional depth, and loss to keep you invested from the first page to the last, culminating in a well-deserved happy ending for Mac and Ripper. And for those who enjoy a bit of steam in their romance, this book delivers on that front as well.
Highly recommend this book to fans of post-apocalyptic romance with strong characters, nonstop action, and spice!
Maelstrom by Susanna Strom Publisher: Cougar Creek Publishing LLC Genre: Romance | Sci Fi & Fantasy Release Date: January 12, 2021
Maelstrom is the second book in the World Fallen series by Susanna Strom. It can be read as a standalone novel, but the first book is so good that you wouldn't want to skip it!
Maelstrom is so amazing! I love post-apocalyptic books and this one is definitely up there as one of my favorites. Set in a post pandemic world, Ripper, Kenzie and friends are forced to deal with the survivors of the world and boy, they are doozies!
I refused to give away any spoilers because this book will keep you on the edge of your seat! The story is laid out really well and filled with twists and turns and so much suspense and excitement!
I love the characters in this book and have enjoyed watching the grow as they deal with the constant crisis around them. Also, the romance between Ripper & Kenzie is so hot!
It didn't want this book to end! It was so good that I couldn't put it down! As much as I wanted to know how things would work out, I didn't want to reach the end! I'm so happy that there will be another book in the series called Bedlam! I can't wait for it to release because I need to know what happens next!
I'm so grateful to Susanna Strom, Cougar Creek Publishing LLC, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.
I became instantly addicted to Pandemonium and because of that this entire series. As soon as I could I bought Maelstrom and devoured it as I had the first.
This story, or a better label would be an epic adventure, takes place right after the ending of Pandemonium. We once again find ourselves, yes, I am a character in this story, which is how awesome the writing is, on the run and looking for a safe place. We had heard of a safe place, a farm called Valhalla, and we were determined to get there. But as life has taught us, it is never easy or simple. We found ourselves in danger in front and all around us. Okay enough first person, I am not actually a member of this story but dang it there were times I sure felt like I was right there, along for the ride!
Where Pandemonium might have felt slow because of anticipation and build up, Maelstrom is one fight after another and there is little down time. There are so many twists, turns and realistic scary moments that I would just catch my breath from one and be diving into another. The characters are well developed, and I really loved getting to know them better. There were some surprising moments and that really kept me on my toes. No spoilers even if I want to rant with excitement, LOL.
This series is amazing and as soon as I turned the last page, I was off to the next story. I cannot impress you enough with how much I enjoy this story, 5 blazing stars.
As I finished the first book and put in the NetGalley request to read this installment, I obsessively checked many times a day, hoping to find this book waiting for me. When it was finally there, I immediately devoured it. I stayed up way too late reading it and only stopped when I quite literally fell asleep in the middle of a page. And then of course, I finished it the next day. Picking up right where Pandemonium left off, Maelstrom is another adventure packed ride through a post-pandemic world. I compared the first book to watching an episode of The Walking Dead, and this installment feels wonderfully the same. The ragtag group of this makeshift family grows both literally and figuratively, keeping me riveted to the pages as I root for my favorite characters and worry as they seem to go from the frying pan to the fire time and again. There is definitely romance to this series, but I love that that element is only a part of the story. It is so much more than a love story. I love the pace of this book and the interaction of friends who in a pre-pandemic world might not have fit. The dynamic that these characters have is fantastic. Each character feels just as important as the next, and I am happy to follow any of them through their adventures. I will now impatiently wait for the next book, probably reading both this and the first book a second time while I wait.
Kenzie and Ripper are back! The world is still in freefall after the pandemic ripped through humanity (That's a bit close to home with COVID-19!)
Kenzie, Ripper and the rest of the motley crew are attempting to get to a remote ranch where they hope to seek refuge with an acquaintance. But the journey, well you just know that it's not going to be straightforward, don't you?!
There are rampaging survivors, cult wannabes, and neo-nazis to escape first! Valhalla may not be the safe haven they were hoping for.
Ripper may not be your typical hero, he's more of a dark hero, but he still saves the day and keeps his rag-tag family together. There are more dangers in the desolated world than one group should face. They are some great new characters explored and there are some real nasty pieces of work it was a joy to see meet a squicky end!
Kenzie, Ripper, Kyle and other survivors are trying to get to Valhalla Ranch at the ass end of nowhere, because their city was literally burning. But every mile seems like a bit of a sh*t storm. If you thought they got into some situations in book 1, they get into even more in book 2, which I didn’t think was possible. It all went from worse to a cluster of epic proportions. Yup, lost even more sleep, just had to read one more chapter, so damn good. They go through so much, endure so much, and add to their traveling group. Of course when they finally make it to the ranch there is another obstacle to take down.
These two don’t get your typical hea, but in this world they get as good as it gets. And they still have so much heat, these two will go through anyone to get to each other. In a world full of unknowns, their relationship is a bright spot in an otherwise dark world. More please, always need more of this book crack series.
I begin by saying that I had high expectations for this second book; I had already tasted what it could be in my head. Instead, unfortunately, it wasn't like that. The second book, unfortunately for me, was a bit heavy, even if interesting. There are many events, really too many, which even if, on the one hand, they intrigued me, on the other, they almost made me close the book. What I really loved was seeing the relationship between Kenzie and Ripper grow. Their trip to Portland and some happenings rekindled my curiosity. In this second book, you can empathize more with the characters enough to make you feel part of their group, and while it's a good thing when you finish the book, you feel sad. I must say that Susanna Strom will be part of my library, and I am happy to have had the opportunity to get my hands on her books.
Maelstrom picks up right where Pandemonium left off and I am so glad! You don't miss a minute of the action. Kenzie, Ripper and the gang find themselves in a LOT of tough spots in this one, almost to the point where it was too much, which is why it was a four star instead of a five star. There is one part i felt was completely unnecessary to the story (Mimi) and I honestly think the book would be better off without it. Otherwise I loved this so much! The way you really get to know the group even better, the way the group gets to know and grow together even more, the new members. It did feel kind of like Ripper and Kenzie's story was ending so I might be a little sad for the next one if it goes in a totally different direction but I am excited to read it.
I didn’t expect a lot from the first book, but I was hooked by the end of the second chapter, and then read it in one day. When I started this one, I was afraid book 2 wouldn’t live up to book one, but it does! There’s lots of action, lots of movement and Mac and Ripper are still OTP. The next book is Kyle’s and I’m starting it right now. Multi POV - mainly Ripper and Mac, but there’s also some from Bear and Kyle, since they’ll be the MC in the next books. HEA for the main characters, but these books should be read in order. The first two are definitely not standalones, and the next is a continuation of the over-arching plot but with the focus on a different couple.
I love Ripper. I loved how devoted and protective he was of Kenzie. And I liked Kenzie. After the first half of book 1 she has grown on me alot.
Safety Safe. No ow/OM drama. Towards the end of the book while ripper and Kenzie are undercover in a cult they pretend they are in a throuple with another woman (nyx, her book is book 4 ) that the guys kidnapped. Her and ripper have never meet before but they act like that have. Nothing ever happens between them I think he puts his hand on her butt and he pulls her back into him, but that’s it. Ripper is loyal to Kenzie. He only has eyes for her. He wouldn’t touch another woman. And I like Nyx, she made sure Kenzie knew nothing happened between them.
I did a long time for me to read it because of the circumstences! Everytime I had to put it down I hated it. Wishing I didn't have to go to work and so on....
This is book #2 in the World Fallen series. Maelstrom begins where Pandemonium left off! So the story of Ripper & Mac continues. <3 They had a long way to go to get their HFN. With all the bumps in the road they finally made it to Valhalla. Where they encounter more trouble. But I loved reading it.
“You’re my ride or die, Mackenzie Dunwitty.”
I can't wait to read Bedlam!
*~*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.*~*
So in continuing of this couple we get into several situations. But the two main themes are Christian cult 😑 and white racism ( Aryan nation) because of course that survived the end of world. It's seeping into everything lately and as I've said b4 I read to get away from the real world and don't like it in my fiction. I don't like using my fiction for a prefixed platform. No I don't agree with cults or Aryans nations view points. I just don't want to read about it. So this theme took my enjoyment away and at the end had me frustrated just to get it over with. So third book will be a maybe but not going on the iPhone as look for 🤷
After a lot of consideration I decide to rate this the by the content of the story. A story which I found to be creative though a bit repetitive. The biggest problem I had was the grammar of how it was written. The narrative is riddled with fragment sentences. In other words, the author wrote so many sentences with a missing subject. I think If it was once in a while, I can overlook it but it was a style in which I struggled to accept. That being said, it’s not going to stop me from reading the next book. I liked the story. I just hope the next one is written better.
Book one sucked me in. This is book 2. I think you will be lost if you start with this one since it is a continuation of the last story. I did enjoy this one, but if you watched ‘The Walking Dead’, this is the same storyline as season 2 (maybe 3) with a few changes. I don’t want to give it away, but a biblical community (or what is pretending to be one) has taken girls/woman and marrying them to one man. Man has to break the woman out. Sounds familiar, right? Very, very similar. But, like I said, I did mostly enjoy this one.
Action packed full of twists & turns, hot alpha & his capable, yet vulnerable but determined female.
This new found pack of unlikely friends, brought together by a freak disease that’s wiping out civilisation, has more than their fare share of misdermeaners many revolving around the hero and heroine as if the universe is trying to keep them appart. Shear determination, survival instincts and the deep love that’s developed bring them back together despite all odds each and every time. Looking forward to reading Kyles story, hoping the underdog finds his true love along his travels
Nothing against the dude on the cover, but that is totally not Ripper. (Just saying)
Kenzie and Ripper are such an adorable couple. They continue to learn from each other and their communication deepens. It felt like they were separated the majority of the story, so that was frustrating.
Question, why do all the crazies come out to play during an apocalypse? Why is it a running theme in almost every book of this genre? I mean isn’t the end-of-the-world drastic enough? I’d read a book of just Kenzie and Ripper living off the land with their friends and learning how to survive.
Thank goodness I wasn't left with a cliff hanger, I love to hate them, seriously. Kenzie and Ripper, Kyle and the wild group of survivors could not have faced more obstacles as they tried to reach the land of safety. Post apocalyptic books are rough to read sometimes although this author gave it a strong voice that kept me coming back for more. Well done and I look forward to book #3 in the series.
