Rate this book
After spending many years in artificial hypersleep, a handful of survivors of the exploration vessel Supernova awaken to find their ship torn to shreds. They are unsure of what happened in space or how they crashed into an uncharted planet. Upon exploration of the new world, they soon realize their destination: The Triassic, the first chapter of the Mesozoic Era. A plan is formulated to escape this terrifying landscape plagued with dinosaurs and prehistoric beasts.

The survivors soon discover that there may be an even larger threat looming under the trees than just the dinosaurs, threatening to cut their mission short and trap them all forever in the primitive depths of the Triassic.

Nurse, this patient needs an editor STAT!

Dear oh dear! It's clear the author did a bit of research on the Triassic age, but then says things like "grassy fields" and "tall grass", when grass didn't evolve for another 150 million years. And why pick the Triassic age for our hapless humans to land? Such a boring period of Earth's prehistory. The story starts in 3271 A.D. when us naughty humans have buggered up the Earth in a big way, but we're still using clunky imperial feet and inches?? I think metric would have taken over by then.

There were just too many inconsistencies for me to take the story seriously. I began skimming chapters. I did enjoy the dino/human action scenes, but in the end, I became distracted by other things...like the smell of the neighbour's roast lamb...and the weeds growing between my bromeliads...and the pretty birdies in the tree near my reading spot.

This was a good concept ruined by poor writing. I do however, give credit to this bloke for having a go at writing a book. Two stars.

Enjoyable mystery

A little time travel, some dinosaurs and plenty of action and excitement. Thoroughly enjoyed the story at almost all levels.

Good story line, horrible writing

I can't figure out what, if any, thesaurus the author used. There were words that made absolutely no sense. Skewered for scoured, " The FATR rattled passionately "(can machines be passionate?), a dislocated arm? " scar" used repeatedly when wound, or anything resembling that, would make more sense. Scars would not be formed in a matter of hours, or even minutes. And so on....This book could have been oh so much better had it been edited. It came off as written by a kid in junior high. I loved the plot. The writing ruined it for me.

I stopped at page 17 because

The writing is just awful.

Besides the fact that we really focus on the emotional aspect of a robot(that has had no indication that the robots are anything more than just robotic) we are introduced to characters that don’t matter and then start the book later. We have clear signs of time passed and everyone is stupid like I get trying to figure things out but they are dumb.

This is a direct quote from the cast who’s been traveling in space and woke up crash landed on an alien planet…

“But dinosaurs were extinct. The fossils they left behind had spawned awe and wonder for centuries but no living specimens were ever seen by humans back on earth despite several ghost stories and superstitious urban legends. This had to be something else.

Maybe some kind of rare mutated lizard?”

So you just are going to be okay with traveling in a space ship for hundreds of years and then have NO IDEA about the fact that aliens can exist on other planets and that they may appear to be dinosaur like they are in fact their own species.

This book is unreadable (kindle version). The author doesn’t know how to apply proper punctuation. The overuse of the exclamation point is distracting and a bit ridiculous.

Interesting story line, terrible writing.

I think I sprained my cringe muscle while reading this book. The author misused so many words, mostly adjectives, that it was very difficult to get through. Erroneous placement of exclamation points as well as question marks on statements made this almost unreadable. Dialog bordered on the ridiculous. I gave 2 stars instead of one because the basic plot was interesting, even though there were some major plot holes. If you can tolerate the terrible use of language, then maybe you would like this book.

As a dinosaur lover, I couldn’t put this book down. Carver shows mastery of the time period and evokes genuine fear and excitement through his writing style. He adds a unique twist to your typical dinosaur novel, so you will not be disappointed!

It has dinosaurs and space ships and still manages to be garbage, that's impressive

This is one of the worst books I've read for the simple reason that the author can't be bothered to have his characters act sensibly. First the author has a fleet of spaceships fly into an asteroid field for no reason. Nevermind that the average distance between asteroids is 600,000 miles and so the entire fleet could easily pass safely through. This fleet however encounters a bizarrely dense asteroid field, one so dense you'd think it would have been seen and avoided. Still that is how the author sets up one ship going into the asteroid field and ended up back in time in the triasic period.

Everybody on the ship dies except for a female (Severine) and male (Julius) members of the ships military contingent. They shortly discover a surviving scientist who is the very essence of a cowardly self-serving stereotype, but useful so the scientist isn't shot or run off inspite of his immediate and repeated attempts to takeover and even shoot the others.

A couple of robots and one vehicle also remain operable so the survivors take them and head to a secondary crash site. They seem to make their way through the wilderness fine but encounter an game trail that Julius absolutely insists they use for no reason other than he doesn't want to go through the wilderness and since Julius is the only pilot able to operate the vehicle he gets his way. (It is worth noting that Julius also has rank but says he is not going to push that; however when the scientist is encountered Julius seems to immediately forget those words and pretty much does nothing but ignore advice and give orders like a complete moron.)

Julius' insistance on using the game trail becomes insanity when Julius, rather than waiting or going around, has everyone get out the vehilcle to attemp to heard three ton dinosaurs off the trail. INCREDIBLY PREDICTABLY this goes wrong when predatory dinosaurs attack but everyone makes it back to the vehicle and the idiots continue on their way.

They get to the crash site where they encounter a survivor who came out of cryo 20 years earlier. This survivor provides an info dump on the land and animals he has encountered. This surviver also has the mcguffin necessary to get into the otherwise impenetrable room on the crashed ship that can send out an SOS. So the group heads back on a slightly different route to make greater use of the game trail. This leads to an enounter with a swamp. Note that Julius could just go through the part of the forest they have already been through but instead he insists on going through the swamp. Severine objects to the unnecessary risk, but Julius insists and Severine, like a meek little cow, goes along with an obviously stupid choice.

Of course the dinosaurs in the swamp wreck the vehicle and the idiots barely survive. One robot doesn't the second is malfunctioning because no one ever thought to water proof them. This is where I quit listening, 4 hours into a 7 hour book. (I believe book length is adjusted for playback speed so don't expect the book to show up as 7 hours long.)

Bottom line: The author relies SOLELY on stupidity to move the story forward which demonstrates a complete lack of skill and story telling prowess making this book a waste of time and money.

As others here have pointed out, this author didn't thoroughly research this period of earth history. The Triassic was still recovering from the Permian extinction, the worst mass extinction in earth history, so the descriptions of “grasses” and “jungle fauna” were premature because the Triassic was mostly a hot, dry desert.

The fossil record for the early Triassic is especially boring due to the tens of millions of years recovering from the Permian, but the astronauts under attack in this story by Coelophysis, Herrarasaurs, and crocodilian Saurosuchus reveal they touched down much later during its Carnian period, although this novel's twist includes human savages who’re descendants of the original landing party.

It's still an exciting novel, although I wish these astronauts had landed in the Jurassic which had far more memorable carnivores like Allosaurus, Megalosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Torvosaurus, although the Triassic did end with another mass-extinction event similar to the Permian when volcanic eruptions triggered another runaway global warming event.

It's too bad the novel didn't include those volcanoes in the story’s climax, which would've been far more satisfying.

An entertaining novel for fans of Jurassic Park.

Set three hundred years in the future, Earth is dying from an endless stream of wars and pollution. In a bid to save humanity, the Federation sets out in search of a new home. While seeking out a planet to colonise, one of the fleets is virtually annihilated in an asteroid field with the transport vessel Supernova getting sucked into a black hole and crash landing on an Earth-like world.

After waking from her sleeper pod, Corporal Severine bands together with the few survivors left in a bid to seek shelter and help. The jungles outside are filled with unseen dangers and the small band must do whatever it takes to survive.

This was a really nice fusion of SF and dinosaurs. Well worth checking out.

5 Stars

A group of Colony ships leave a dying Earth to find a new home. When they are devastated by an asteroid field only 4 survive. A fifth ship the Supernova is pulled through a black hole and crashed on a planet with Triassic style dinosaurs populating the planet. When Severine wakes from her sleeper pod it's 300 years after the crash. I enjoyed the book very much lots of action trying to stay out of the dino's jaws. And none of the dinosaurs had feathers I'll give The Author a Sixth Star for that😊

Book 1 of 2. Takes place in the future. The Earth is no longer livable. Space ships were built to try to save as many people as possible. One ship crash lands on a strange planet with scary dinosaur-like creatures. A man and woman have survived, along with 2 robots. Great fun to read. Overall, I loved this book and want to read more by this author. Yes, some parts wrote like a script for a bad B-movie but it was great escape. C.2020

A good read

But like a lot of these books I find that everything starts in the middle there’s no beginning and you got to figure out what happened as you read it and then it really doesn’t go into the beginning unfortunately. But there’s a lot of action dinosaurs bad guys and it’s enough to keep your interest now I’m onto Book 2 to see how the rest of it plays out.

Great!!

I really enjoyed this book! It was different from others of the same subject. The characters were well written in their roles. Plot had the twist and turns to keep the story flowing. Never read any work from this author but I will in the future.

Good read about dinosaurs

It's a good story. Lots of dinosaurs and survival of encounters of them. In my opinion, just an ok read. It is however, full of nonstop action

Jurassic peril

Good storyline. Character interactions very good. Setting green hell. Action events nicely spaced. Oversized opponents felt with as were human foes.
