Tom Powers is a newly minted Chicago homicide detective who still wrestles with demons born from personal tragedy; his cruel father abandoning the family, the death of a child who was like a sister, his best friend and brother stealing Kristy, the girl he loved and his mother’s debilitating stroke. Years of stuffing the emotions away have led him to lead a solitary existence, wrapped up in his work. When Conor, his estranged brother and superstar quarterback, is killed in a suspicious car accident in southern Louisiana, Powers heads down to the bayou to investigate. In his quest to find the truth he tangles with the mob, a hypocritical televangelist named Trudeau and Lancey Broussard, the arrogant southern gentleman who controls all high stakes gambling in the state. Powers senses the local cops are in on a cover up of Conor’s murder, so he accepts help from a beautiful reporter. However, when the tensions and the body count rise he has to put some faith in a burly Cajun detective and one of Reverend Trudeau’s daughters. The case is as murky and dangerous as the bayou where things don’t always seem as they appear and one false step could end your life. Can Powers survive in the Big Easy long enough to snare his brother’s killer? Find a new or lost love? Tame the old demons? Or will the new monsters creeping into his head prove to be his downfall?
