Jinn Academy #1

Jinn Academy: Year One

Rate this book
Once upon a time, my life was perfect. I ruled high school with an iron fist and an impeccable sense of fashion. Then on my eighteenth birthday, my days of power ended with a burst of light–literally. Gold balls of light shot out of my hand when I heard the wishes of my peers whisper across my mind, resulting in me getting suspended. Me, Mercedes Davenport! But that wasn’t even the worst part of the day. No; that happened when I was invited to the Academy for the Exceptionally Gifted, or as I call it, Jinn Academy, a magical school just for genies. And finding out that I was one of them. Now I’m stuck at Jinn Academy until I complete all the courses that will allow me to safely live in the human world without causing a magic malfunction. But with my powers on the fritz, I may be stuck here forever. Seriously, could my life get any worse?

What a fun book to read! I found myself struggling to put it down, too caught up in Mercedes's story. I can't wait for Year Two to come out! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy and enticing read.

What if the high school mean girl could grant wishes? 😱 it’s not as bad as it sounds, lol. The Jinn Academy is a fun setting. Kind of a Harry Potter vibe, just with slightly older characters. There are classes to teach genies the basics of granting wishes, how to charm snakes and turn into smoke, and magic carpet flying.

Mercedes Davenport is definitely an unusual character! She’s a classic high school mean girl—rich, spoiled, selfish—and something about the way she is written left me eager to find out what happens next. There’s some character growth near the end of the book, where she starts to realize that she hasn’t been a good friend and starts being nicer to people, which was very refreshing. Before that, the way that people acted towards her drove me nuts. There were never any consequences for her selfishness and frosty attitude for a long time, and it just made the side characters fall a bit flat, but closer to the end of the book it felt like she had some true friendships.

The first book definitely didn’t lean into any of the darker legends of djinn, although there were some signs that ominous creatures will be involved in future books. It’ll be fun to see where things go from here. 😃

This was a fun book to read. I’ve read a ton of different types of books, but never one about genies so this one was super intriguing to me! I loved the storyline; girl turns eighteen, gets magical powers that she never knew she had, goes to a special academy to learn about her powers, meets a cute boy and a couple great friends, and of course there’s mean-girl drama.... The only problem I had with the book and the reason I couldn’t give it 5 stars was because I really didn’t like the personality of the main character! She’s a self-centered brat who judges everyone around her and thinks she’s better than everyone. There was a bit of character growth and development towards the very end, which was very welcome, but I’m hoping to see a whole lot more of it in the next book. Otherwise, this was a well-written book that had a lot of humour throughout and left off on a bit of a cliffhanger (nothing too bad) that leaves you wanting more!

I love books with magic, surprise and yet relatable to me. This book reminded of a combination of Charmed and Harry Potter. It took me some getting used to, to not dislike the main character completely, but yet I couldn't stop reading to see what happens. There was enough surprise and twists to keep me interested and I can't wait for book 2.

This one was... pretty good once it got going. However it did struggle to get me invested until a few chapters in. It’s definitely a unique read and I will be checking out book two when it arrives. I enjoyed it enough to decide to read the series through.

Watching the main character, Mercedes, grow from a spoiled princess into a real person with Jinn powers. I'm excited to see what year 2 is going to bring for her and her friends.

I really enjoyed this book. It's got a little bit of everything. Adventure, danger, romance, and even mean girls. I'm looking forward to the next book.

In Jinn Academy: Year One by Kira Moericke, Mercedes comes into powers she knew nothing about on her 18th birthday and is sent to Jinn Academy, a school for Genies, so she can safely return to the human world without causing magic malfunction. Along with friends she makes she has other surprises that come her way. I recommend this book and hope to get a chance to read other books in the series. This book is available on Amazon

A pleasant surprise

I was so drawn into the story. Loved the way the author described each scene.
The way the characters interacted and each ones personality was so well written.

As a fan of mythology books and Harry Potter, Jinn Academy scratched those itches perfectly. I loved learning about the powers and watching the development of Mercedes. Would highly recommend to any reader.
