What a beautiful book, about forgiveness and second chances! It was heart-wrenching but also full of hope, love and new beginnings! I loved and savored reading this book!
Twelve years ago, Milla’s world ripped apart. During a summer vacation at her parent’s beach house in Lake Meade, there was a tragedy that broke her relation with her boyfriend. She went away and made her life, but her heart was forever frozen.
She married Luke and she loved him, truly, but she was a mess and her marriage didn’t survive. So, at her parents’ urging, she went back to Lake Meade, to find surcease for her destroyed heart and to find forgiveness. When she meets Ryder, for the first time in twelve years, there was no hate, just confusion and anxiety.
“I think when I saw him again after all these years, I was expecting some sort of huge, life-altering halt, like a ton of bricks crushing me. Like I was being smothered, drowned, unable to breathe. Except, when I first laid eyes on Ryder again after twelve years, I didn’t feel like I was sinking. I felt sadness, sure. Anger? Maybe a little bit. But for the first time in more than a decade, I felt a little bit of that bitterness that’s been protecting my heart melt away some.”
Ryder has weathered the pass of time with the same grace that characterizes all his moves. There’s such a well of goodness in his heart, that it touched me as soon as I started reading his story. He was marked by the tragedy, he felt sorrow and contrition, and he was such an accepting person. He accepted all of Milla’s emotions, hurt, anger, confusion. He was patient, letting her sort through her emotions, giving her assurance when her anxiety struck, giving her love and acceptance. He was so full of grace! I loved his patience, his giving soul, his acceptance of all Milla handed out.
Milla was floundering during the summer she was sixteen. She was an introvert to her twin’s extrovert. He had a circle of friends, her friend was her twin. He was her world until she met Ryder, who gave her a safe place to be, away from her brother.
Twelve years later, she was a mess again, and Ryder was her safe place again.
I loved, loved this story! It had all the feels, it feels you with hope and despair. It was intense and angsty, just like I love my books, and with wonderful characters. Milla was a hot mess but she had a good heart. She was like a boat at sea that just needed a dock where to moor. Ryder was everything that is good in a man. He gave so much love that it made me cry.
