Wowowow!
To vij un izvij stipri cilvēki, viņu stāsti.

Un gribas atkal to pagājušā gadsimta režīmu lamāt.

Consigliatissimo.

Chronicling several generations of a Czech family, from the end of the Second World War into the early 1990s, this convoluted, wildly inventive novel, moves from the absurd, to the dark and disturbing, to the fantastic, to the philosophical, while the oppressive nature of Communist rule and the historical shifts of the era play out in the background. But at heart it's a love story. Probably one of the best books I've read this year.

Having lived in the Czech Republic, I have a special place in my heart for their writers. The most well-known of these (not counting Franz Kafka) is Milan Kundera, largely known through the film adaption of “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” but there was also the 1966 Oscar-winning adaption of Bohumil Hrabal’s “Closely Watched Trains”; both authors are highly recommendable and if you want a taste of typical dark Czech humor, Kundera’s “The Farewell Party” or Hrabal’s “Too Close a Solitude” (especially for avid readers), “The Little Town Where Time Stood Still” or “I Served the King of England” will do nicely. I am also a big fan of Josef Škvorecký whose “The Republic of Whores” had me on the floor, but whose “The Bride of Texas” was an interesting historical novel about the role of Czechs in the American Civil War. (I didn’t much like the worldwide favorite “The Good Soldier Švejk”, probably due to the translation.) However, all of these are either dead or, in the case of Kundera, getting close. (He’s now a curmudgeon living in France who’s famous for being extremely rude to anyone who asks him for an interview or guidance.)
There are living authors, too, that I can recommend such as Ivan Klima or Iva Pekárková and all of these post-WW2 writers share a common topic, life under Communism, ranging from oppression to forced dirty deals to life-goes-on-in-a-village. This book by Tomás Zmeškal is no exception and has the interesting distinction of being by the only black Czech writer. (This doesn’t come up in this book but in another of his books.) Before the war, Josef meets Květa at a lecture on the deciphering of cuneiforms by the Czech scholar Hrozný; he falls for her and to his surprise, she chooses him over his friend and rival for her affections. Later, during communism, he is arrested for unknown reasons and she is forced to call on this ex-suitor, who now has power, to improve her husband’s conditions and he demands a certain “payment” in return. The story is told through various points-of-view, not necessarily chronological, by Květa, Josef, their daughter and a close family friend and psychiatrist. There are some amusing moments, too; typical Czech absurdity involving the doctor and a would-be burglar, and a visit from a British relative who arrives for the first time in Czechoslovakia and tries to describe the country to his sister. (Of particular note, the Czech tradition of carp-killing at Christmas; yes, I was also stunned when I first saw it and, yes, I know it’s a part of other Eastern-European cultures, too.) However, the focus of the book is on the rupture caused by her trying to help his ten-year prison stay by consorting with his “enemy.” There are many things here which are very Czech, such as the cottage in the country which undergoes unlimited alterations. (I once saw a BBC architecture special which featured the designed adaptability of these cottages.) There is also Josef’s Kafkian attempt to seek some sort of justice through the post-communist bureaus who promised this as part of the “new” regime. Unlike the East Germans, the Czechs mostly destroyed the files of who implicated who since so many good people had been forced to cooperate. (“Do you have any information on something your neighbor allegedly said in conversation at the market? We know your son is an intelligent young man and we’d like to see him keep his place at the university and not have to work in the coal mines…”) The book is about the tragedy caused by the regime, the human cost at such a personal level, driving a wedge between two people in love and the collateral damage to the family who have to step around this breech.
I felt that some storylines were left dangling or abruptly ended, giving the novel a patchwork feel at times but I liked it very much and would recommend it to anyone who’s looking to break out of Russian literature but see another view of Eastern Europe. And read someone different.

Josef in Kveta sta obenem junaka in žrtvi svojega časa. Junaka, ker preživita strahotno fizično in psihično travmo; žrtvi, ker te travme njuna ljubezen ne zmore preživeti. A čeprav sta v ločenem življenju drugačna, v njem najdeta smisel in drobna veselja.

If you ignore the fact that this man has never talked to a woman, is calling pregnancy a blessing way too many times (he has definitely never been pregnant either, he could've asked his mother if it had been a blessing and I'm sure she wouldn't agree) it's a good book with a good point.

This is a family epic spanning a couple generations, focussing not just on the personal pain caused by the machinations of the Communist political machine, but by the devious calculations (and miscalculations) of human nature. There are many perspectives offered in this family saga, so much so that I felt it might lose coherence. There are many characters that spin out from the many tale of Josef, and Květa. These characters introduce ideas and aspects of both the Czech nation and the human condition: faith, history, intelligence, community, love, commitment.
While there were times I wondered how the novel would reconcile each new character with my traditional ideas of the form of The Novel, I never lost interest with the ideas discussed, or the writing. The book's mosaic of anecdotes, across time and characters, creates a firm foundation on which to contemplate tragedy, humor, infidelity, faith, science, the strange, and the absurd.
In the translator's Afterword, Alex Zucker writes that Zmeškal is being compared to other more established Czech authors. I certainly felt that the chapters in Love Letter In Cuneiform were written in a variety of styles, reminiscent, at turns, of Hrabal, Klima, Kundera, et.al. This pastische sits well in the form in which this novel is structured, and rises naturally from the course of modern Czech literature and from Zmeškal's personal history as well.

As the year winds down, I still find myself thinking about Zmeškal's Love Letters in Cuneiform, which I devoured in mid February. The story starts with the wedding of Alice and a cake that reflects heaven, hell and purgatory and spins from there to the stories of her parents, the baker of the fantastic cake, the family doctor and beyond mostly in the against the shadow of Communist Czechoslovakia. Reviews focus on the love story between Josef and Květa (Alice's parents) but the carefully constructed narrative is as much about them as the people around them. The book is beautifully written (and translated), which lets the achronological narratives fill out. For me, everything with the Baker (the cake, his wife, etc), while not a part of the story of Josef and Květa remain with me. There's a very delightful, and very Czech sense of humor to the story as well.
There's leitmotif of what it means to live in Czechoslovakia and be Czech. There's a brilliant illustration where the author inserts himself, allowing the perspective of a half Czech, half Congolese man to briefly illuminate and contrast with later chapters from the perspective of a member of the Czech diaspora.

Tomáš Zmeškal’s Love Letter in Cuneiform (translated by Alex Zucker), I’m sorry to report, was a frustrating read for me. The publisher’s description—which is what attracted my interest in the first place—only covers a small part of this weirdly constructed novel about betrayal, love, family, forgiveness…and immortality, of all things. While this book does contain a plot thread about a family caught up in the Communist legal bureaucratic nightmare, it takes a lot of tangents. I didn’t get the book that I was expecting. This isn’t the book’s fault; I just wish I had been better prepared...

...
Iako sam i dalje uvjeren kako je vrijeme čvrsta fizikalna veličina i svjestan toga kako je sekunda tek jedna osamdeset i šest tisućinka osrednjega sunčanog dana, priznajem, Květa, pokolebao sam se u svojoj vjeri. Moja me osjetila, naime, neprestano izdaju, a dani pokraj mene bez prestanka jure poput stada preplašene ždrebadi.

4/5. Zgodovina ni le ravna črta, ki jo potegnemo z leve proti desni in pojasnimo z nekaj suhoparnimi letnicami in napiflanim besedilom.

Zařazením chetitštiny a Hrozného si autor dost šplhnul (protože každý správný obyvatel Lysé a návštěvník DS Náplavka moc dobře ví, vo co de).
