Nashville Nights #1

The Ex Factor

Rate this book
They’re perfectly in tune—but only when it comes to their music. This sizzling romance from New York Times bestselling author Erin McCarthy follows Nashville’s hottest country music duo as they fight for love in a city where dreams often cost a broken heart.

Self-made singer/songwriter Jolene Hart loves everything about being on top in Nashville. Well, everything except her very public breakup with Chance Rivers, her sexy masculine other half. Once the hottest duo on the scene, they turned Music City on its ear. Now their careers are as cold as their relationship. Which is why their manager has practically locked them in a remote cabin with nothing but a guitar, a bed, and time to do what they do best: make some beautiful music together.

As Nashville royalty, Chance has big boots to fill—and the pressure that comes with ’em. He fell hard for Jolene, but he couldn’t handle the spotlight, the crowds, and the fights that made headlines and killed any notion that love and success could go hand-in-hand. Still, Chance is more than willing to rekindle the one thing that worked: the wild passion behind their hit songs. Soon they’re making up for lost time, in the steamiest ways possible. But Chance finds himself wishing for the impossible: that their intimate hideaway could last forever.

3.5 Love/Hate/Love Stars
* * * 1/2 Spoiler Free
No creative field is immune to insecurity. It can be caused by trying to live up to Songwriting Royalty, with expectations to be the next one to carry the mantel. Or from the opposite side of the track, growing up with nothing; never being encouraged or respected due to the behavior of family and wanting more than anything to fulfill the childhood dream of singing, being the Queen of the Grand Ole Opry.

Jolene Hart and Chance Rivers have these pressures; they cause the both of them to have this Love/Hate relationship...which has become a huge problem... because when they are "Together/ Together", no duo are better. Their savvy manager/agent put them together and music magic happened. The singer, Jolene, with the voice of an angel and the songwriter Chance became the fresh hot couple where Country Fans took them into their hearts as they fell in love while producing a hit album.

They were opposites; she understood the need to play to the crowds. She wanted the fame and fortune... it was something she dreamed of as a child. Gifted with a voice so pure and clear... she found her way to Country Mecca, Nashville. Was up and coming and when partnered with Chance, it all took off.

Chance grew up with all of the fame and fortune huge Country Legends are use too. He also saw all the ugly; cheating spouses, his Father and Granddad...and was just happy being in the background writing the songs...He had enough of putting on a show. As child, he would be dragged out to play his guitar...proving the father did something right...and set off to his room. Chance hated the display and it caused performing, media and all the other stuff surrounding fame distasteful.

These two had fallen hard for each other... but then a couple of innocent pictures of Chance with a pretty fan wrapped around him caused all the insecurity Jolene carried to explode. Harsh words were said; a guitar was thrown in pool and a Grammy taken off a mantel...not pretty at all and both brought it on themselves. Both just didn't know how to talk to each other without pushing buttons... either it was "the sexy hot give it to me now" one or "the stubborn hit straight to the hurt the heart" one.

Now we meet them in their manager's office. She has put her foot down and instructed them they WILL finish their commitment of another album. It is due and they will write it together. Period. After back and forth verbal jabs, Jolene and Chance know they will have to do this... so they go for two weeks to a cabin to concentrate on getting this album written.

Now two combustible characters like this know in their hearts, the attraction and need never left them while they were apart. Both, when separated and broken up had a few hook ups, sort of...but it wasn't like they ever stopped wanting each other... just too stubborn to see the others side of the fight. Now they will have to confront their feelings. The question is whether they will be able to figure out how to do this and come out unscathed.

This book had a true feel about what the music industry expects today. Each character had to work through the need to react in knee jerk ways. Once they were able to tap into their true feelings...it was very sweet. There were some rocky moments...but in the end it all comes together the way we like our romances.

Right off the bat, I suspected this was going to wind up a “could have been…should have been better” romantic read. The first clue? When it was revealed what happened following the break-up of this supposedly head over heels in love famous country music duo. Chance Rivers obviously didn’t give their love a second chance or thought when he immediately rode off into the sunset with Dixie, the empty headed bleach bottle blonde, who the paparazzi accused him of cheating with. It didn’t help that Jolene Hart didn’t look back either as she drove off into the night with their tour bus driver for a disappointing one night stand.

The second clue? When Jolene’s star struck lover boy’s poor performance was crudely described. If that was supposed to be funny, well, it wasn’t. It fell into the “too much information/not at all necessary” category. And crude is the actual word that kept coming to mind several times while attempting to finish this one, folks. From the overly too steamy scenes that hijacked the storyline and made the main couple come across as immature teenagers, not country music mega stars, to the inappropriate writing (i.e., bathroom scene with Jolene on the toilet and Chase washing his manly parts in the sink). Again “TMI/not necessary!”

Clue three? While Chase and Jolene are being intimate, he actually comments to himself he’s had a lot of women before Jolene…and will likely have more after her. Yeah, I did say “while” they were being biblical with one another. That was the final nail in this literary coffin for me. In the words of The Band Perry…”I am done!”

I’ve read Erin McCarthy before, so, honestly, I’m not sure why she chose to go in this direction. I know I’m not alone based on the other critical reviews I’ve seen. All I do know is this true romantic at heart has to actually like the main couple and the writing style. Also, even if if it is a steamy read, I still expect class to prevail over crudeness. Here’s to hoping someone else out there enjoys this book. It was a big miss with this NetGalley reviewer.

Title: Heartbreaker, Series: Nashville Nights (Book 1), Author: Erin McCarthy, Pages: 202. VERY steamy read, classy book cover, crude at times, did not finish after 60%.

1 - "I don’t want to fake it... I want to write what I really feel." Star.

DNF @ 31%

I don’t really know what to say about Heart Breaker even when I am posting a negative review, I try and keep it respectful and positive. But I’ve got nothing good to say this time. Erin McCarthy is not a new author to me, granted I haven’t read loads of her books but the few I have I really enjoyed; they made me laugh and had likeable characters with engaging story-lines.

Jolene and Chance... I can find nothing good to say about either of them, they are the most dislikeable characters I have read in a while; I didn’t feel any connection between them, or any emotional attachment over and above winding each other up, and generally acting like stroppy teenagers. From what I can gather their big 'split' that originally caused all the animosity and general douchery from both parties stems from him hugging a fan... Yep that’s it folks he hugged a fan.

They were very different people who had some serious communication issues.

True story that. And I think they would have been better off not attempting to get back together for the sake of their careers or any other reason. For me this is a couple and story that may have been better in the authors head, than it actually has transferred onto the page as, and has subsequently been written into.

ARC generously provided via Netgalley, I am sorry I cannot offer a more positive review on this occasion.

Country music star Jolene Hart and her ex-boyfriend, singer/songwriter Chance Rivers, were the darlings of Nashville until their very public breakup. Now their agent is forcing them back together professionally because they haven't fared well separately. There's quite a lot unfinished between the two and it isn't all musical.

The first half of this story had me seriously considering this to be my second DNF in my entire reading history. That's how frustrated I was. Both Jolene and Chance were extremely immature emotionally and she came off petty and he a jerk. Combine that with every other thought being about lust and I was ready to bail. But, I'm glad I persevered.

The second half focused more on their honest introspections, making them much more interesting and layered. Both operated out of their family histories and their tough struggles to choose other paths were admirable and inspiring. I selected this book because of my history with the author and this lived up to my past experience; the first half certainly didn't.

I also liked the parts involving the songwriting process. I'm glad I ended up in a good space but it shouldn't have taken half the book to get there.

5 Words: Yes, but not right now.

The initial start was entertaining, but I just need something a little heavier right now!

I will definitely pick this back up, probably in a month for so, I love books about country music and this is light enough for summer.

ARC requested through Netgalley, and kindly provided by Random House Publishing Group in exchange for an honest review.

I really like Erin McCarthy’s writing style, in particular, her True Believers series, which was incredibly sweet and engaging. Heart Breaker introduced us to Chance and Jolene, who are around six months past a nasty break-up and forced to work together for the sake of their country music career.

Both play up the mandatory “reunion” as no big deal by using their sexual attraction as a means of distraction from the source of their problems. I found both of them to be passionate but a little immature. Each had major insecurities that prevented them from taking things to the next level. This left a lot of things unsaid and led to many incorrect assumptions about how the other was feeling.

Outside sources preyed on Chance and Jolene’s insecurities throughout the story. I enjoyed their journey back to one another, drama and all. It was so obvious to me, the reader, that both were completely in love with one another. It was both engaging and infuriating waiting for them to come to that realization themselves.

Good read!

**sigh** so I read this story over the weekend and when I went to put my review up I was floored at how many people disliked the story for one reason or another. This book most definitely falls into the category of it's not you, it's me LOL I say that because I had to pick up the book three different times before I was in the right place to give the story it's proper reading.

It's easy to see how so may people may dislike Jolene and Chance. On the surface, they're two people who are constantly fighting with each other and seem like a hot mess. But they aren't fighting with each other, they're fighting for a future. They both have baggage. They both have hurts and they have history. And all of these things have to be hurdled within themselves and with each other to forge forward into a beautiful second chance at love :) So future readers, pay close attention to your head-space when you read this book because it deserves a chance. It's well written and very entertaining #TRUST

Kitty's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Erin McCarthy really came through with Heart Breaker. It was a real story about two people who were going to make beautiful music together or kill each other. As volatile tempers flare and stubbornness prevails, Chance and Jolene burn up the pages. Oil and water – definitely – until the bedspread is turned down.

Together, Chance and Jolene write beautiful music. Apart, they can’t find a note to hang on the refrigerator. But, after their unbelievable break-up, their Manager insists that they put everything aside and start working on that second album that they are contracted for. Well, there are a few conditions to them working together and neither one of them are willing to bend to make it work. Until …. A cabin in the woods, a pond and finally admitting that they want each other.

Chance is insecure about his place in the music business because of his family. He was raised my two men who were legends in Nashville and womanizers. He has no idea how to express his feelings to Jolene, how to really make a commitment, how to control his temper. But he really wants to learn and tell her how much he’s missed her.

Jolene is stubborn and a true alpha female. She came from the poorest of poor families and fought for everything that she has right now. She can’t afford to lose it all because of a man that can’t do what she wants and says. Yes, the break-up was bad but getting back together with him will do them no good either. But, without his songs, she’s not going anywhere. So, fight the lust and write songs or fail at the one thing she has wanted most in her life? Is there really a decision to be made?
What started as a good time has them realizing that they are so much better together than apart. It’s back on and Heart-Rivers are jumping back into the music scene as well as the bed. The break-up album just may be the back-together album that neither one of them saw coming. Too bad they were spending more time in bed than they were with the guitar. Enter Tennyson and the bomb that could finally put an end to all the heartache.

Erin McCarthy really took us on a fun ride through the Nashville music scene. It took a lot for me to get through this book without giggling. The dog’s name was Dolly and, whenever Chance said Jolene, all I could hear is Dolly Parton singing Jolene. So, I am going to assume that Erin McCarthy is a Dolly Parton fan??? But, I really did enjoy this story. It was hot and steamy when it had to be, it was mean and nasty when the story called for it. It was definitely written with a flair for the dramatic with these two characters. But, most of all, it was an enjoyable read with a really sweet and sexy happily-ever-after.

I had always enjoyed Erin McCarthy's contemporary romances but then she started writing for a younger audience and writing NA romances which I wasn't a fan of so when I saw this new one on Netgalley, I liked the sound of it as I like Country Music and this book was aimed at an adult audience.

I enjoyed the beginning and was wondering if Erin McCarthy took inspiration from a real life country duo who split up last year?! I liked all the parts about song writing and the country music scene but then Jolene and Chance started to annoy me. Their relationship hadn't lasted long in the first place and the reason for the split was a bit lacking, so I could never feel that they had an enduring love. The story lacks emotion and at times I felt that Jolene was more interested in what Chance could do for her career than how much she loved him! The storyline became predictable and unoriginal.

I do get annoyed in romances when during the time apart, the hero has had other women but the heroine hasn't but that's when they have been apart for years. In this story, as soon as they split up, they both were with other people and although that is probably realistic, in romances, I like them to at least pine for one another to believe that they are completely in love and meant to be. This romance was told in quite a casual, jokey manner that I never felt their connection or their love.

It was definitely an improvement on her NA novels but still not on a par with her older novels that I used to enjoy.

DNF @ 40% .... I won't be writing a formal review or giving it a star rating for this book because I am unable to finish the book.

There was nothing really wrong with the book and it is not a reflection on the author because I have loved other books by Erin McCarthy, this story and characters just weren't connecting with me and I kept losing interest.

Just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean others won't love it. Don't let my opinion sway you from reading this book.

This book and I got off to a bad start because I used my special talent of not reading the blurb correctly. I thought it was about a duo who hated each other, not about ex's!

Then . . . just weird pacing, but the reason it's getting one star is because the ending conflict made me not want to root for them. At least half of the couple is just too immature to make a relationship work.

Heart Breaker indeed! This book broke my heart over and over. It basically ripped it out of my chest walked all over it and then for good measure stumped on it as well. And then when my heart was in pieces it picked it up and put it back in, gave me a pat and sent me along.

That's what happened here.
okay, metaphorically speaking.

But seriously, this book made my heart ache. I felt Chance and Jolenes heart break, I felt their confusion and I was devastated by their inability to fix things.
The character building is solid. I feel like I know where both of them are coming from, I feel like I know them, and even gotten to know the support cast (even if it's rather small)

The setting is interesting, even if I have never been in Nashville- and to be honest I know very little about Country Music - it does feel authentic. The whole stardom side of it, is the same not matter what music genre you in, and it is well documented all of over. McCarthy does however make an interesting leap between wanting fame and wanting to play (good) music. Because truthfully most artists want both, how does one keep the fame-dome at bay to still have what is important in ones life? How do you balance between pushing to be known yet still do what you love?

McCarthy manages to bring across issues like that, because they trouble the two MCs. During the course of the novel, both of them work through insecurities and trying to find a way to balance their personal life and accomplishing a successful career. As I said the character building is really well done.

McCarthy is a talented writer and she proves that she is a master of her craft, by taking a really sweet, heart breaking cute&fluffy and injecting it casually with surprising depth.

But essentially this is a love story. A story of two people, who fear commitment, who are lost, plagued by their past and who clearly love each other but somehow can not communicate. Their miscommunications, is heartbreaking. Their inability to communicate totally heart shattering.
Their chemistry is off the roof though. And the smut. Well, surprisingly I really enjoyed it.. I did, shocking right? And there is quite a bit- so a heads up for those friends of mine, you know who you are...:P

Now, my only issue is the last bit. It was all to sudden. Just like, ok we done with being silly. Let's move on again... uhm. See while I am happy with the ending, especially the epilogue. My heart, well it was still battered on the floor, when it suddenly all changed. I didn't even have time to pick it up. Then the book was over. I felt strangely dissatisfied by the last chapter. I went back two chapters to make sure I didn't by accident miss something, but no, I didn't. So basically we have all this heartbreaking, then it's like ok we over it now, we learnt third times lucky? Somehow I wanted something- I don't know- More? A wee bit slower? just something else as well. *shruggs*

I shall take my tattered heart and go read the next installment. NOW.
You should read this if you (mind your heart though, it might get a bit battered)

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review and I have to say that after finishing it... I have very mixed feelings... on the one hand, there were things I really liked and enjoyed in this story... but on the other hand, there were also some aspects of it that kept irritating me... so I'm gonna share all of that with you and you can make your own decision whether to read this book or not ;)

I'm gonna start with our main couple :) unfortunately I had real troubles connecting with them... they just didn't "click" for me... mainly because I felt that they acted in a very immature way throughout most of the book... and don't get me wrong, I have nothing against flawed characters... ;) I don't expect them to be perfect and make no mistakes, because all that usually adds depth to them and makes them interesting to me... but this time I thought I was reading about a couple of teenagers in high school, so when I read at some point that Jolene is 25 I had to double check that ;) but let me try to explain my feelings in a few more details :) Jolene is a country singer, part of the Hart-Rivers duo with Chance, a song-writer... they come from two different worlds... she from the middle of nowhere and a not so great family, and he's from Nashville song-writing royalty, both his father and grandfather very famous... they met, started working together, became a couple and broke up all before the book even started... four months later they are forced to finish their second album by their manager... so they decide to go to a remote cabin to do it... because that's always a good idea ;) and again, I have nothing against second chance romances... when they are done well, I am a fan :) but here this angsty-push-and-pull-hot-and-cold-I-want-to-be-with-you-but-not-really situation was tiring... and I know that some of you love those kind of stories... but this one just wasn't working for me... I was expecting them to change and evolve as characters at some point... and it did happen, but sort of quickly near the end, and that was just a little bit too late for me...

Now let me talk a bit more about the things I did enjoy in this book :) I actually really liked the writing style, so I am definitely gonna try out some other books written by her :) and since my biggest problem was with the main couple, I hope I will love her other stories more... :) although I have to add, that I did love the sassy side of Jolene... ;) the book read pretty quickly, not only because it wasn't very long, but also because the writing style was very entertaining :) and even though Jolene and Chance didn't really "click" for me I am gonna give this series another try, because I pretty much loved most of the secondary characters and I am very curious who will get their story next :)

All in all it was an ok book for me :) it was my first story wrtten by this author, and based on her writing style I will definitely check out some of her other work... this particular story was a bit too angsty and immature for my taste, because I was expecting something else, but that's just my opinion :) if you love this sort of push-and-pull relationships, you are gonna love this book :) and like I always say, if you are interested in a story, don't let a few different opinions deter you from checking it out on your own :) I always do a research before picking a book, but ultimately, your opinion is the one that matters :) yes, sometimes there are reviews that will convince me to read the book or not, especially if they come from people whose opinions I trust, but if I really want to read a book, there's no stoping me :) so read my review, read other people reviews, and then make your own decision... if you decide to read this book, that's awesome :) happy reading for you and I hope you'll love it :) if not, then that's ok too :) whatever works for you ;)

XOXO

This is 3.5 stars review round up to 3 stars

What if you would be in a popular Country duet, fell in love with your partner and then all hell break lose? That is how Jolene and Chances story is beginning. Their record company wants them to have their second album ready soon and both of them are not liking the idea of working (or I should say be stuck) together again. They ended being secluded in a cabin and their physical attraction got the best of them. Being out of their elements, they began to share their intimate stories, a bed and they try to get a better understanding of each other.

This book is all about music, most specifically the creative process of their new album. I like how Erin McCarthy explored all of these elements. Add a little paparazzi frenzy and some juicy gossips and we are in for some star quality moments. Here and there we find reference to Dolly Parton (the dog named Dolly and the main character called Jolene), that is well thought. Unfortunately, that was not enough to sustain the overall story surrounding it, more specifically the relationship between Jolene and Chance.

Jolene is quite a special character. Not totally lovable and not mean neither; she is just a red hot blooded woman. The author did a good job to have her appearing human and not a self-centered superstar diva. She is also aware that she has talents but that her looks play also a part in her success. She is mainly driven by wanting to keep having her name out there and do some money while she can. She knows that you can be a star today and totally forgotten tomorrow. I'd say that she is so geared toward her career that her emotions get lost in all of it, she has a hard time to stop and just ask herself the right questions.

Chance is the son of a country legend. He is not looking for fame and fortune, in fact, he hates it. To him, it is not so much about having success than to have the chance to work (and have a relationship) with Jolene again. He never really got over their breakup and he decided that he wanted to try to seduce her again and get back his dog: Dolly! He developed some drinking problems that gets in the way of his life.. and sooner than later some of his past behaviors came back to haunt him and jeopardize everything is trying to build back up.

Chemistry between Chance and Jolene characters is hot. However, It is lacking some depth at the emotional level. That is mainly the reason I did not connect with their love story as much as I would have liked to. Bottom line, it is an interesting story, but it failed to get me inspired. Usually, second chance romance novels are leaving me uplifted and are making me believe that love can happen again. It did just an OK job on that part. Physical attraction was way too present and left wondering if the characters were really able to build some that will last.

The whole book is kind of predictable, which is not a bad thing at all. I got what I was expecting to, but I would have loved to be more connected to those characters.. maybe next time?

I have read and enjoyed a lot of books by Erin McCarthy, but I am sad to say that this wasn't one of them. I knew right away that I was going to struggle a bit with these characters and that held true throughout this book. Heart Breaker had such a cute blurb and I was really looking forward to reading about these country singers/songwriters. Unfortunately though this wasn't what I had been hoping for and it just didn't work for me.

Chance Rivers grew up Nashville royalty and Jolene Hart fought her way to Nashville. But once they became a team they had everything. Being a singing and songwriting duo as well as a couple, their careers exploded. But when a very nasty and public breakup tore them apart, Chance and Jolene couldn't even be in the same room together without fighting. So when their manager forces them to work together to finish their album, things don't get off on the right foot. But as they begin to work together again, the sparks between them are more than they can fight and they find themselves becoming a duo in every sense once again. Can they make it work this time, or will history repeat itself?

I struggled right away with these characters and they were a lot of my problems with this book. Both Chance and Jolene felt very immature, and much younger than they should have been. They were childish and it was clear from their actions at the very beginning of this story that they acted without thinking. They had horrible communication and acted rashly. I just couldn't connect with them, and honestly I had a hard time really believing in their connection as well. The attraction between them was clear, and I do believe that they had feelings for one another. But I just couldn't ever fully get behind their relationship because I honestly didn't feel like either of them were mature enough to handle a committed relationship with anyone.

Besides the characters here, the story itself was predictable and ended up feeling like so many others out there. There was nothing new or unique to hold my interest and I found myself skimming to get through and find out how things would end. As much as I was hoping to be proved wrong, things were cliched and went exactly the way I figured they would and I was ultimately disappointed. I really enjoyed Erin's older titles, but I haven't been able to connect with her newer books and this was another that just didn't work for me. If this one sounds like something you might like, I recommend giving it a shot. This could be a case of it not working for me personally. But if you are looking for an adult contemporary story, this one felt much younger and might be one you want to avoid.

HEART BREAKER, the first novel in Erin McCarthy's new series Nashville Nights is about a hot new singer and songwriting duo, Jolene Hart and Chance Rivers. Their first album and tour together was hot and so was their love affair, but then... the very public breakup. Unfortunately, they are contracted to continue to work together. Jolene and Chance have explosive chemistry and the temperaments to match. Jolene especially is not at all happy about being forced to work with Chance and stir up all the hurt of their breakup. The first part of the book they are both dealing with the fact they still have feelings for each other but don't want to admit it. Each have their own insecurities as to their professional status and this only makes it harder. Once they get past that and admit their feelings, the love and the romance between them really shines through. This is where it gets good and makes up for the rocky beginning.

Erin McCarthy is a favorite author of mine and I have to admit, I had my doubts with this one at first, but she really pulls her characters and storyline together so I was really glad I read through to the end. Excellent finish! 4 stars

Second...no, third chance romance! The Nashville duo of Chance and Jolene teamed up on the stage as well as the bedroom and both were successful for the couple though they had their issues. Chance seemed the classic guy saying things without really thinking about them before they left his mouth. It was funny at times because I knew just what parts it were that would set Jolene off because it seemed pretty typical of what most women would think. It brought smiles to my face just knowing what was coming and had you thinking “oh, no, he did not just say that” and then seeing him like a deer in headlights not knowing what it was that he said.

Heart Breaker can be summed up with the idea that you don’t give up on the one you love. This was a fun book that was easy to read and followed Chance and Jolene through a relationship in the Nashville spotlight. They both had opposite but similar childhoods that helped shaped who they were and some of the mistakes they kept making. This book does give you your HEA which leaves you with that good feeling when you turn the last page.

ARC from NetGalley; A whole lot of squabbling from one country singer to her song writer lover and that's about it. Not all that relaxing and I wanted to take their heads and boink them together.

This book is offensively bad. It contains the phrase "my hoohah heated up." It is nothing but two characters who can't talk to each other and equate sex with love and the entire setup is stupid and meandering and...ugh. Quitting 60% in because I just can't take it. I had high hopes thanks to the country music setting and the second chance romance and the forced proximity trope but...nope nope nope. Oh. And the accents. Half the tme they're droppin' their gs and half the time they speak formally, no contractions and I hated it.

Both Jolene and Chance grew up differently. Chance is third generation of song writers while Jolene grew up not knowing when her next meal would be. On top of the differences between them they have a lot of pressure on them. When they first got together their music and their relationship grew now that they are apart they don't know if they still have that same magic.

There manager decides to send them to cabin to try to get their creativity back on track since they owe another album. But while they are away the past is brought up and feelings are exchanged. They discover how much they have hurt and loved each other from the day they met but can they survive another round together or should they just give it up once and for all.

I had moments when I really liked these two and then moments when I thought they were acting like a bunch of children. Don't get me wrong they were great characters but I had a hard time getting into them since they had such a love/ hate relationship through the entire book. They also had the sweet lovey dovey moments that had me awing and swooning over.

I liked the playfulness between them and how both of them showed signed if insecurity. They were a realistic couple that had to work through real things even though they were famous.

The on/off relationship got a little too much at times and had me questioning if these two were really meant to be together but by the end I was convinced and loved how true love conquers all.

I liked this book was different then other titles I have read by McCarthy. It shows how talented of writer she is. She has a great attention for detail and adds humor just when it's needed.

I thought the plot was pretty good and interesting. I came across some slow parts but I was invested enough in story to keep reading. I can't say how this series will turn out because some interesting people were mentioned but I will continue reading to see where it goes.

So I picked up this book because it's been a while since I've read an Erin McCarthy book and quite frankly, the premise of this one just called to me. There's so many rock star books out there but not too many about country stars and in particular one where the couple is also a singing duet. Color me intrigued.

When we start off we quickly realize this is a second chance story where the couple has to work together on a new album after a pretty bad breakup at the end of their last tour. At the beginning, I was right along for the ride. There is sexy banter and the promise of interesting and sexy times to come. With the added bonus of some anger mixed in to amp up the steam. But I quickly realized my problem with the story. Miscommunication.

This is a big pet peeve of mine and this book had it in spades. For two people that are apparently great with words when they are writing hit music together, they sure can't communicate. Then or now. To the point that they each thought the break up was for essentially different reasons! This took away some of my enjoyment from this story.

There were other things about this couple that I enjoyed and kept me reading, and I liked the tone of the story in general. I think I was expecting it to be more mature and this felt more like a new adult story where the characters are still not very centered. I loved the premise though, and the different take on the music industry that we get to see. It's different than the usual, and that I enjoyed. But will I continue the series? I'm not sure yet.

3.5 entertaining but also aggravating stars

I'm an Erin McCarthy fan but with reservations. She can be changeable in mood and tone so it can be hard to know what you're going to get. Moody NA loners? Snarky vampires? Madcap rom-com? In Heart Breaker, we get fantastic steamy writing with a truly sassy heroine, Jolene, but the whole thing is pretty much torpedoed by asshat hero, Chance. Actually I don't think you can call him a hero unless heroes can be inconsiderate, offensive, and cowardly.

Until their nasty breakup, Jolene and Chance were once part of Nashville's hottest music act with a smoking hot relationship to boot. Now forced to work together again, they have to confront their white hot sexual chemistry while dealing with the hurt and wounds from their breakup. That is, Jolene does while Chance acts like a toddler.

Over and over, Chance is completely tone deaf to Jolene's feelings and insecurities, leaving her alone and hurt. Like when Jolene is pissed at him and a female songwriter picking apart their failed relationship, he allows the songwriter to apologize for him. I felt he should have groveled for Joelene in the end and it aggravated me to no end that the ending was quick and pat.
She rounded on him. "Chance, for once, just once, in your goddamn life, would you actually respect my wishes? Would you just do what I asked you to do instead of arguing with me and needing to be right and pushing and pushing and freaking pushing?"
Sing it, sister.

I'm always a fan of second chance romances so I was positive that I would really enjoy Heart Breaker. The idea of a singer/songwriter duo who's relationship crashed and burned yet were forced back together in order to create a second album really appealed to me. My initial thought was "this is going to be interesting!"

Ugh... I found myself getting annoyed at Jolene and Chance a lot. When I say a lot I mean A LOT. Normally the love/hate relationship creates a chemistry that draws me in and has me routing for them but that was not the case with these two. I found the back and forth both boring and annoying and I was indifferent as to whether they would get together or not. There was a real lack of maturity with the two of them and it went on forever. It kind of reminded me of a Soap Opera. There could only be happiness for a split second before something would come along and spoil it. There was a ton of heat within the pages but without a great story surrounding it I couldn't find the fire.

This book was only 230 pages yet it took me three days to finish it. Normally I can finish a book that size in an afternoon if I'm really liking it. I could only take this book in small portions. I wish I could pin point exactly what was lacking for me but I'm not one hundred percent sure what it was. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

3.5 stars.

Fun read.

We have Jolene and Chance, a country duo that after ending their relationship, can barely stand seeing each other, little less writing a new album. So their agent tells them to buck up and write one already, all in the coziness of a cabin in the woods.

Things are really up and down for these two. They get along great whenever they’re not fighting, and the music they create is magic. There was just too much miscommunication between them or no communication at all, since Chance doesn’t share at all.

Because of this, I felt there was some unnecessary drama here and there. It was frustrating that they jumped to conclusions and didn’t talk enough.

Still, this was an entertaining read and I loved the ending! I’ll check out the rest of the series in the future.

I almost quit reading after the prologue. I wanted to love this book, instead it gave me a headache. And I have loved McCarthy's books before. Jolene and Chance were made for each other if that is a good thing. It wasn't funny, it was sad. They were impulsive and immature, some may say passionate, that I don't buy. Every time I was starting to like it a little bit, one of them would do something to irritate me again. You are supposed to like the H/h in a story. I didn't feel for the characters, I kind of felt sorry they let their insecurities shape them instead of counting the blessings they had in a career others would love to be in and for a couple in love, they were flunking basic communication 101. A secondary character was added to the mix and I didn't like her either. This new series isn't calling to me.

I received a review copy from NetGalley for my honest opinion.
