William R. Humble is a native Texan who’s been writing for longer than he feels comfortable admitting. Though he’s dabbled in other literary areas, his love of speculative fiction keeps drawing him back. Despite his cats often objecting to him spending so much time writing, he's gonna keep on keeping on. He's stubborn that way.
Humble masterfully weaves a character's inner dialog on his own personal word-loom, and I gotta say I enjoy the resulting product. Quick, yet immersive read. The Cannibal makes for a delicious literary snack and leaves room for dessert.
I don't usually read dark fantasy, but the author is a friend, and I'm so glad I enjoyed it because otherwise it would have been awkward.
This story is inspired by Norse mythos, and is complete with battles, a monster who is a cannibal, a young woman who is a famous warrior, and the requisite supporting cast. I wasn't quite prepared for some of the gruesomeness of the first battle, but that's on me--"cannibal" is in the title after all.
What impressed me the most was the author's descriptions and development of the main character, our heroine, in the short space of this novelette. She was strong and fierce, but also compassionate and able to admit and deal with her emotions and grief.
As this is one of the first stories my friend has published, I am thrilled for him, and look forward to reading more by William R. Humble.
