Downfall of the Curse

Rate this book
Luciana is as deadly as she is beautiful—she just doesn’t want anyone to know it

The only thing Lucy loves more than the thrill of a good fight is her childhood friend, Prince Eamon. Already enough of an outsider, she’s willing to hide her fighting skills to win a place at his side.

Then Eamon’s betrayal shatters her dreams and leaves her eager to escape Kyona. But when danger and disgrace follow her to the South Lands, an offer from the magnetic Rasad to start fresh in Thorania is too tempting to resist.

In this new kingdom, Lucy can finally be herself. Unfortunately, danger trails her even there. Someone is working to destabilize the South Lands, and it’s up to Lucy to unravel Rasad’s intentions, Eamon’s jealousy, and the motivations of the enigmatic Lady Yasmin. Her decision about who to trust will determine whether darkness engulfs both the South and the North Lands.

If you enjoy adventure, fantasy, mystery, and clean romance, discover the world of The Kyona Legacy today. Downfall of the Curse is the second of three installments in the series.

Deborah Grace White was more or less born reading. She grew up on a wide range of books, from classic literature to light-hearted romps. Her love of fantasy was inevitable from the time her father read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to her and her siblings when she was four years old.

The love of reading has traveled with her unchanged across multiple continents, and carried her from her own childhood all the way to having children of her own.

But if reading is like looking through a window into a magical and beautiful world, beginning to write her own stories was like discovering she could open that window and climb right out into fantasyland.

Now she gets to live that childhood dream amidst the fun and chaos of life with her husband and their four kids.

Chapter 1- Let me guess, Lucy's going to Thorania. Never mind. She's going to Balenol. With Jocelyn, Matheus, Cody... and Eamon. This is gonna be awkward.

"Just don't come back engaged like Jocelyn did."

Oh so they're going to both. This is a big trip.

Chapter 2- King Rupert didn't 'get suddenly sick.' Someone poisoned him.

Ha. As if the balcony collapsing beneath Crown Prince Giles isn't proof enough that someone's trying to wipe out their line.

Chapter 6- This "new guy" at the ball is the guy trying to kill Giles. The one who killed Rupert. The Rasad guy from the back of the book.
Oh, so now he's casually mentioning how high the balcony is up. Like he didn't just try to kill Giles on one the other night.

Chapter 15- The dragon in Lucy's dream is from the Jeweled Peaks of Valoria and it's in league with Rasad trying to kill Giles. Not to mention its older than even Qadir.
I spoke to soon. It is Qadir.

Chapter 20- The journal mentioned in the book, the one Lucy found in the cave, is on the cover of the book. Must be pretty important

Chapter 21- The quarrel between Rasad's ancestors and Lady Yasmin's ancestors has something to do with Isidore from the journal.

Chapter 23- Hold on. In chapter 6, Rasad mentioned how high the balcony was while on it with Luciana. But that's not all. He also mentioned that she must be feeling pretty nervous about being on one with the attempted assassination and all. Giles had specifically told his family and the Kyonan delegates to not speak of it. How would Rasad know about it unless he was involved?
And also, Lady Yasmin said something about the 2nd assassination attempt. (which was also supposed to be a secret) She asked Lucy if the man was acting of his own accord when it happened. Eamon and Joss didn't think he was. Rasad must have done something similar in Thorania.

Chapter 24- Cody likes Lady Yasmin. Maybe.
What a coincidence that the Kyonan delegation was invited to come to Thorania during the annual gathering of the soliders.

Chapter 26- Rasad's Kyonan ancestor is Isidore. She kept a journal.
Why hadn't the Kyonan slave rebellion taken the journal? What a coincidence for Lucy to have found the other journal, undiscovered in the base tree. Rasad put it there. Or someone.
"Chance is just what humans call any purpose they don't understand." -Elddreki

Chapter 27- Cody left without Luciana and Matheus? Yeah right. Rasad's a big liar.
The crystal's in Rasad's private study are from the jeweled peaks. It how he's controlling the men. Lucy's holding one on the cover of the book.
Rasad has dragon scales. They're from the dragons in the jeweled peaks. The ones he captured.
Rasad's in league with Scanlon. Or was.
Rasad didn't capture dragons, he is using the scales from the dragon that forfeited its magic.

WHAT?!?!?! CODY'S DEAD!!!!!!??!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.........
Stupid Rasad. HOW COULD YOU. He used his magic to make him do something against his will. Like Eamon's guard.
He forced Cody to ride off a cliff.

Chapter 29- Hold on. Cody can't be dead. He is very much necessary to finish the series. He went to warn Lady Yasmin.

Chapter 33- Yass Cody let's go.

Chapter 35- "Eamon, Yosef, which one of you wants to stay with the horses?" -C
"There's no way I'm staying with the horses, Cody." -E
"Neither am I." -Y
"Cody, we can just tie them to that tree." -L
"I don't see why no one suggested Luciana stay behind." -Y

Downfall of the Curse has a slower start than the other books in the series, but once it begins to build, the level of intrigue matches the tone of the series. If you have been following the series, it is great to see some of the other beloved characters take an active role in Lucy's story. I loved seeing Cody all grown up! And this story seems to nicely tie up the lives of the original clan (Cal, Jo, Elnora and their families) with some tender moments at the end.
If I found Lucy more likable, I probably would have given the book 5 stars, but her attitude in the beginning plus the slower build up made the story a bit harder for me to get into (compared to the other books in the series). That being said, she did have tremendous character growth and it was refreshing to see her grow into herself as the book progressed.
A fun and enjoyable read. I can't wait for the final installment!

Delve into a deeper understanding of Luciana's troubled understanding of the events in Legacy of the Curse as she goes on her own adventure, along with her pesky younger brother, her trainer, the man she used to love, and her best friend, on a diplomatic mission to her mother's homeland. The journey is fraught with danger, but Lucy's ashamed of her ability to defend herself and doesn't want anyone to know just how much she loves a good bout with knives or swords, but of course, when assassination attempts occur, she might not be able to keep her secrets very long.
This is an entertaining and insightful Christian fantasy novel. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the last book of the trilogy.

Book 2 doesn’t disappoint

(Story of the King’s children from The Kyona Chronicles). Prince Eamon has magic and is confident in its use and in himself. He and Lucy are lifelong friends through their parents and maybe more is developing. Lucy travels into danger, trying to help another kingdom. Eamon questions her intentions, and everyone faces danger. I enjoyed the writing and its a strong and varied story that takes place in various types of settings. The MCs were strong and consistent. The ability of characters to figure out the source of evil maybe should be more intuitive, based on book 1. Overall, it was an enjoyable book that I’d recommend!

Contains: kisses and some violence. 2.5 I did not like Lucy. She was headstrong and stupid. She did things she knew weren’t wise just because someone told her not to do it and the way she treated Eamon was horrid. The “love” story mostly happens before the book starts so we don’t see any growth in their relationship and when Lucy decides she wants Eamon after, all he is totally okay with it even though she’s treated him like crap for months. I’ve never really cared for the flashbacks/history sections of these books; also, dragons ex machina again.

another good one from Deborah Grace White

I hate love triangles, so I was a little apprehensive after reading the description for this book, but thankfully it didn't actually contain a love triangle. I'll admit I didn't enjoy this story quite as much as I did Jocelyn's story, if only because I'm such a sucker for the prince-in-disguise trope. But this story is really well written as well, and I loved exploring more of the southern lands.

Maybe my only criticism - as with legacy of the Curse, actually - is that I don't see how the title relates to the story at all.

Book 2 in The Kyona Legacy series

Magic. Power. Political upheaval.

It's such a sweet, swoon-worthy, and unique book with a second chance romance vibe where the couple has an almost magnetic relationship. This book includes characters from book 1 in the series, so it was fun to see them in a different role. This is a completely sweet and adventuresome journey through love.

Well-developed characters. Detailed world building. Intriguing storyline.

Downfall of the Curse takes the adventure to Balenol and Thorania with plots that span kingdoms and a spunky female character who can fight well with weapons and words but who is learning who to trust with her heart. The scenery is well described. It is fun watching Lucy discover and embrace herself while unraveling mysteries and working to save the people around her. This is a good read for those who like books with adventure, changing settings, dragons, mystery, non gory fighting, strong community, clean romance, and save the kingdom level stakes.

Not my favourite

I have enjoyed all of the Kyona books in both series, however this book filled me with irritation. The character of Lucy was very unlikeable, as much as I tried to understand her all I felt was irritation and frustration. She was a pathetic, pitiful and spiteful child with no redeeming qualities. I enjoyed all other aspects of the story, save for her character. A good book but not my favourite.

A battle for growth.

This story explores the pitfalls bitterness can bring to one’s life and sense of self. Lucy goes on an extensive journey of growth as he discovers who she is and what she is truly capable of, while struggling to overcome anger and hurt and resentment. A wonderful sequel to the world of Kyona, and I can’t wait to finish off the series with the next book!

Well darn, I’ve finished book 2!

Well-written, hard to put my reader down, and more dragon lore, left me wanting more …again! On to book 3. Thank goodness there is a book 3!

I would give it a higher rating, but the main character in this book is insufferable. Eamon deserves better.

Action packed!

My rating is 4.5 stars

"I have been thoroughly enjoying the Kyona Chronicles!
Downfall of the Curse lets us get to know Lucy better – she is Jon and Scar’s oldest daughter and was introduced in Legacy of the Curse. She is very talented at fighting and is also beautiful – neither of which is something she is proud of. She has been ashamed of her abilities for a while and despite continuing to train, she has mostly done it in secret. As the daughter of a Kyonian and a Balenolean, she has never quite felt that she has belonged in either place. The catty girls at court certainly haven’t helped her in that area!

We learned at the end of Legacy of the Curse that Lucy saved her brother’s life (if you haven’t’ read it yet, make sure you do). The events that made that necessary have her bitter and unforgiving towards Eamon, the man she has loved for so many years. In fact, I was quite frustrated with Lucy for a while in this story because of her attitude towards him – which I’m sure the author intended.

Though Downfall of the Curse continues the previous stories and has characters carrying over from it, the story is fresh and new. I greatly enjoyed reading the escapades the Kyonian delegation got themselves into as they traveled to the South Lands. Lucy’s insecurities led her to make some dangerous choices!

I loved reading more of Cody, Lucy’s chaperone, trainer, and the man originally introduced as the boy who led Jonan to the rebels in Captives of the Curse. Oh! I liked Cody then. I love him now!

There is plenty of action, intrigue, and, yes, the dragons do make a return appearance – in a big way! If you enjoy fantasy adventures, you will want to read the entire Kyona Chronicles series. And hurry, Downfall’s Echo, the series conclusion, will be released mid-September. So it’s a great time to grab the entire series and read them so you are ready for the grand finale. I can’t wait!
