Protecting Hope

Rate this book
Seven years ago my mother was killed and I went into the system. She was the only family I had. Scratch that. She was the only family I thought I had. It turns out my mother had a sister. Now I'm moving to a small town called Salem Point to live with her.

There are a lot of interesting people here in Salem Point. My neighbor, Knight, is the sweetest guy I've ever met. I have an instant connection with him that I can't quite explain. Then there's Christian, the douche bag at school that can't seem to take his perfect eyes off of me. And to be fair, it's not a one-way street. And finally, there's Wyatt, the creepy guy that I only seem to find in dark corners following me around. Between mean girls and the most beautiful guys I've ever seen, my life is complicated.

It turns out, it's about to get a lot more complicated. The people of Salem Point aren't what they seem. There are monsters in this town, and I might be one of them.

Cute and easy to read.

This was a quick and easy read. A lot of it is telling but in a way that I don’t mind.. We have tons of internal monologuing but I feel like in this book that’s ok.

Hope has a hard life, and there are secrets going on. We get many people’s POVs as well. Hope is in foster care and has been for 7 years. All of a sudden they find an aunt? I thought that was somewhat weird.

I did like all the supernatural hints though and getting to see the other’s povs. I actually felt like this is a cross between Twilight and Vampire Diaries. It’s got elements from both but also has it’s own unique style.

What Hope is is important to the story but I find it intriguing that some dude wants her dead and is now coming after her.

There are some plot holes I’m hoping will get plugged soon. Like the attraction between everyone for Hope, but we’ve not seen her interact with the Hs she’s supposed to be into. At least not enough to feel the level of connection she does. Even with her explanations.

Maybe a 2.5. There are some very familiar tropes and themes in this, with a very Twilight feel (with some True Blood and maybe Vampire Diaries thrown in there (I haven't read the latter) and probably a few other things that will have you going ah, yeah, totally see what influenced then) Werewolf and Vampire are both immediately drawn to new girl in town with a troubled past and a legacy she knows nothing about. All the guys are in love with the new girl and showing off who is bigger. The HBIC hates the new girl because HBIC's man is drawn to new girl. New girl gets her first best friend, who is also an outcast. Nothing wrong with following a formula. There are literally thousands of lists dedicated to grouping books that are basically carbon copies because we as readers want more of something we love. The problem is, this one is not done very well.

First of all, you have to NAIL the real world parts of a paranormal story. Hope, the FMC, is in foster care when we meet her. You don't just get whisked out of the system because they find a family member. And you definitely don't just get yanked out of the home you are in when a relative is suddenly found seven years later, and in another state. The story would have been better if Hope's social worker showed up, said they may have found a relative, Hope doesn't want to get her hopes up, foster father is a jerk, there is a court hearing (which 100% would happen) and then a judge decides to send Hope to Connecticut. Her aunt would definitely have to come get her and Hope would be transferred to the CT CPS until her aunt adopted her or she turned 18. Upon arriving at her aunt's, everything would not immediately be perfect. Hope would have to adjust to having someone putting rules in place. There would be anger, anger at being forced to be a kid. Anger at moving. Anger that her aunt didn't know about her before. We are missing the tension that is necessary to develop rich characters.

When Hope does get to town it makes literally no sense that the HBIC sees Hope in the restaurant and immediately hates her without any sort of catalyst. Have Hope run into Knight on the way in. Have Knight be her server. Even have another werewolf or Christian have some sort of actual interaction that spurs the HBIC's jealous reaction. Also, Edward "hating" Bella on first sight only worked because he could smell her and she was too tempting. Having Hope look like someone Christian would want to fix with again zero interaction to get that sort of feeling (it's not like Hope showed up with bruises from her foster father or emaciated) makes no sense.

The entire story is like that. It jumps in an ADHD manner from the different tropes without laying any of the ground work to build the tension and mystery. Everytime there is a big reveal there is literally no shock because it was so blinding obvious that was going on, like Hope's lineage. Finding out the sky is blue is more shocking than finding out what Hope is and who her parents are. (Side note, that was all a lot of information to dump in the first book. Tease it out a little)

Similarly, the climatic points aren't climatic. The attacks each take about a page and a half and are resolved without much effort and then Hope is just good. She is also totally okay with finding out the supernatural world is real, she is a part of it, and she may be the key to everything. Seriously, no push back or screaming or denial, just how could you not tell me you are a vampire/werewolf/witch!

It's an interesting idea for tried and true tropes, but the work needed to execute those tropes into a story just wasn't done which makes this a disappointing read. I'm still leaning toward picking up book 2, but we will see.

Update: I re-read this august 2024
I had a bad experience recently that made me appreciate this book more. I am giving it an extra star. I am going to re-read the next book..

Grrr! I am so on the fence about this book...
Part of me likes the plot but the other part of me thinks it was rushed.
Also, I wouldn't call it a reverse harem.
Maybe a love square?
Kane doesn't appear to be in love with her, unless I missed something..
Wyatt seems confused about her but not in love or even like...
Christian and knight like her but she's not actually with any of them...
See? I just do r I ow if I like it or not.
Well, on to book two.....
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Well written!

3.5.I liked this book and planned on reading the series. My only thing I found about the book that I felt could change, but not too drastic, was the predictably and similar to other paranormals books. But I would rather that than author trying so hard to make things so different that the story does not make sense and feels like it is unrealistic. Plus I felt it had a few holes in the story. What was one one of my favorite things was that it is a reverse harem and the guys are not friends or even like each other.

Hope has been hopping from foster home to foster home since her mom died 7 years ago. Then one night, she finds out she has family and she moves to Salem’s Point, and her life will never be the same. She smart and independent. I like that she’s 16 and acts like she’s 16. The story introduces you to a number of different character, and I’m not sure how they will all fit in. This was a pretty good debut. The story flowed well, the characters were interesting. I like that the guys weren’t really friends. I’m looking forward to see how all of this works out for Hop.

Basic, elementary style, 2.5

Couldn't really connect with the story due to the lack of skill and elementary story-telling. The concept seems unique enough that if this book went through a complete overhaul, it would actually be pretty good.

Entertaining

This was an entertaining book. It's basically a mix of the vampire diaries, the originals and a dash of twilight all thrown into one, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's not it's own original storyline. My only complaint was Hope being a complete idiot about trying to "protect" her aunt, who everyone has told her is not only one of the most powerful witches in town but also a vampire hunter. Smh.

Just no.

This was a travesty of recycled material and tropes. Hope is beyond hope and TSTL. The 1st guy she meets is a jerk, and remains so for a couple weeks before receiving a personality transplant. The 2nd guy, his brother, attempts to compel her to do what he wants, which smacks of r*pe to me. He even inner monologues about how he has used compulsion in the past to get women. The 3rd guy is trapped in a future mate scenario where she's the quintessential mean girl who constantly harps on Hope. Everyone wither loves her, hates her, or is terrified of her potential. And she's a happy little mushroom who questions nothing until it bites her butt and then she rants and hides. Ugh.

Unoriginal

I wish this author would be more original, she took parts from the vampire diaries, the originals, legacies, and even twilight. It was a good book but it was very unoriginal she doesn’t use the same names but the ideas are mostly the same, she also used certain things from the characters to the story line, all of those come from the shows I mentioned. Yes she does add in her things to make it more original but really the only thing that changed was that fact that it was a reverse harem scenario.

Not ready yet

I won't lie, this hurt to read. The basis is pretty good. Everything else can be painful. There is a ton of detail missing. It's kind of like watching a foreign film. You get the gist but the dialog doesn't work in your head. I won't be moving forward with this series :(

YA PNR RH series

I would classify this book as a slow burn young adult paranormal reverse harem. Therefore it might not appeal to those looking for a more mature style or lots of romance/sex scenes as there are none in this first book of the series. The main characters are 16/17 years old. I was dubious about this as I started reading as generally any sex scenes pertaining to characters under 18 generally give me the squicks, however like I've said there aren't any in this book.

The writing style I would say is a tad juvenile but when reading with the knowledge that the characters are under age and this is a decidedly YA book it definitely fits.

I enjoyed the characters, again they seemed immature against what I normally read but they are children at the end of the day. I especially liked Wyatt, he has a Damon Salvatore aura about him. This could be pushed even further in the next book and I hope it is.

Plot wise, some of the twists could be seen coming a mile away but I liked that there were a few surprises. I would like to know why these particular vampires feel drawn to Hope and I'm hoping that this is explained in book 2.

Overall I enjoyed the book on the premise that its a YA book and not really meant for more mature audiences and I will continue the series when they are released.

DNF - quit at 56%
Well this was really weird. It felt like a fanfic that was really immature with a boatload of high school angst, more than it should have even though this takes place with high school age kids. I just couldn’t get into the story and struggled to read as far as I did. The characters are extremely flat, and the story plods along so slowly. By he point I quit, the FMC, Hope, has no clue about paranormals being real or her friends. But the POV changes reveals that quite a few are vampires & werewolves etc, who for some odd reason set their attraction sights on her. I just really couldn’t care about the story or characters to want to continue.

At my age (60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Ok start

I kinda liked this! Definitely needs a edit but that's ok, book moved fast pace, kept me engaged the whole time. Relationships building at a slow pace but I like that when the H isn't throwing herself at random man or just randomly talks about her wetness. I really enjoyed all the characters, they all seem to have their own personalities which kinda makes up for them not really having a valid description of what the look like. The one thing that did bother me was the H crying, she seemed to do it a lot for a girl strong with dealing with bad ppl her whole life. All in all I very much enjoyed this read and will continue with the series

Hope’s mum was estranged from her family and when she died, Hope went into the foster care system. Seven years later the system manages to track down Hope’s Aunt, Gemma. Hope moves to Salem Point. Hope doesn’t realise she is a supernatural until three quarters of the way through the book, when she finds out she is a rare hybrid witch/warewolf. Cue the vampires trying to kill Hope before she learns how to potentially kill them.
This is a RH story and we meet several of hope’s potential harem in book one. There’s a little bit of romance between Hope and Knight but not much else in the way of steamy scenes. Good storyline and easy to read.

DNF. This book wasn't for me. Maybe it's a little unfair but I kept drawing comparisons between it and Twilight. Girl moves to new town, meets distant, unfriendly vampire and happy, approachable werewolf. I'm sure there's more to it and there's definitely more to Hope than meets the eye but with the angsty teenage high school experience I decided to call it quits.
Not quite sure about the whole reverse harem high school experience either. I didn't read far enough to get to anything about that but that seems a little icky for high schoolers. Maybe it's a slow burn?

A good read

Definitely a slow burn for story and spice, this book seems to be an introduction of the characters and a little bit of world building. As the main female character is 16 i guess the character being a bit childish is understandable however I found the perspectives off all the characters to be that way and so for me I will not be moving on to the next book. I would highly recommend this book to young adult or new adult though as I believe I would have really enjoyed this series when I was younger.

Meh, so bored. DNF 88%. I'm getting nothing from this the characters are like cardboard cut outs. I understand the character profiles of all of them but there's no depth or connection or emotion even with the multiple povs. The dialogue is kinda awkward and formulaic. The plot is not particularly unique to hold my attention either, definitely don't go into this expecting a great romance. There's nothing currently redeeming which makes me want to continue with the series.

Hope is worth reading.

Hope is an engaging character that keeps her men like Knight, Christian and Wyatt hopping and on their toes. Looking forward to see where this series goes plus I am wondering why a Vampire leader wants to capture her. Mmm, what special and unique powers does Hope have?

Paranormal/ why choose/ slow burn/ virgin FMC/ virgin MMC/ shifter/ vampire/ witch/ age gap/ small town/ OW drama/ enemies to lovers/ friends to lovers/ cliffhanger

Trigger warning: death of a loved one/ neglectful parenting/ alcoholism/ violence/ kidnapping

I liked this one. It had an interesting storyline and the characters were cool. I’m curious to see where the story goes from here.

Great start to a series!

The mc is easy to like. After being in foster care for years, she finds out she has an aunt. She moves into a town with many secrets. She learns some of those secrets and some of her own. The romance is slow burn. There is a cliffhanger.

An excellent plot line

I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this story. It ends on a cliffhanger but one you would want it to end on, not one where they wrap everything up all pretty and then throw in a new twist at the end. I cant wait for the next book!

Cute, definitely YA vampire diaries and twilight had a baby

Honestly my header says it all. It's a cute easy read. Will read the next. It's nothing where I'm jonesing for the next book, but I'm entertained enough for the next. If I was a teen I'd probably love it.

Very easy read - some predictability but overall I liked the plot and world building. The characters, though not fleshed out - were easily distinguishable and the pnr aspect was intriguing. Very short though and it left me wanting more as it just suddenly stopped.

I feel like I’ve read this book before, but a better version. The characters were kind of lack luster and the story predictable. I’d give it a 2.5. It’s not bad, but I also don’t think I’ll read the next book
