From the outside, Hilary Taylor has it all—beauty, money, a caring family, good friends—but inside she’s struggling, full of fears. Events from the past forever changed her, and though years of therapy have helped, she still has a long way to go…. No matter how much progress she’s made, Hil isn’t sure she’ll ever be able to trust men again. Especially one who sees her as nothing more than a pretty face. But Hil knows it's time to face her fears, and the best way to do that is to start small.
To Guilherme Fernandes life is about three things: polo, parties and pretty girls—only one of which he takes seriously. Gui is too focused on his polo career to waste time on relationships, however he can’t help but be intrigued by the beautiful yet troubled Hil. So when she decides she'd like to learn more about horses, Gui is happy to find himself in the right place at the right time. But what was supposed to be a one time thing, soon turns into a weekly date.
As Gui helps her discover a new found love for horses, Hil’s guard begins to crumble. The more support Gui offers, the more she wants to accept...and the more the lines of friendship blur. Despite knowing better, Hil can’t help it as Gui slowly breaks through the walls she’s built. Now she has to decide if she’ll stop him there, or if she’ll finally let her fear go and allow Gui to reach for her heart.
The Breaking Series:
Breaking Free (Book 1) Breaking Away (Book 2) Breaking Through (Book 3) Breaking Down (Book 4) *All books are standalone and can be read out of order.
While Juliana Haygert dreams of being Wonder Woman, Buffy, or a blood elf shadow priest, she settles for the less exciting—but equally gratifying—life of a wife, mother, and author. She resides in North Carolina and spends her days writing about kick-ass heroines and the heroes who drive them crazy.

For the past 3 years, Hilary has done all she can to get by and come off as normal as possible to her friends and family. But inside her mind, she is still an emotional wreck, all thanks to what Eric did to her that one night. With a little help from a friend, Hilary slowly works her way through her fears. A whole list, in fact. But the more time they spend together, Hilary starts to fall for Gui. Will she be able to break through all her fears and be able to have a relationship, or will her fear overcome her and keep her hostage forever?
Such a wonderful, wonderful read. I absolutely loved it so!! The story was beautiful told, perfectly plotted, and the main characters are embedded in my heart. Love that a book can do that to a reader. I really took my time with this one once I started. Not for the fact that I couldn't get into it. But because I did so quickly and I could tell this one of those books that would stay with me long after I was done. So I wanted to enjoy the journey and only allowed myself to read a little bit at a time. Until last night; when it got so good I couldn't put down and read way past my bedtime. Which I am unfortunately paying for this morning.
I love Gui and Hilary so much. They had such a strong connection and intensity when they were together. You could tell he really cared about her right from the start. And seeing Hilary discover all these new feelings, all thanks to him, was amazing to see. Just beautiful!!
BREAKING THROUGH is a definite page turner and a charming romance all rolled into one incredible story. Yes, you can read this as a standalone, but I recommend reading book one first. With BREAKING FREE you will get a much needed back story to Hilary...and another gorgeous romance between Hannah and Leo. 5 Stars!!!
This was the perfect addition to a series I already love. Even after three years, Hilary is still suffering the effects of what happened in the first book. Yes, it's a stand alone novel, but I highly suggest that you read this series in order. She's afraid of pretty much everything, but she realized and acknowledges that it's not normal. She knows it's something she needs to overcome. Bit by bit, Gui helps her. He's such a sweetheart, but he still has that intoxicating all around male-ness like the other guys in his family. He's Alpha, but not overwhelmingly so. Watching the two work together to overcome her fears was heartwarming. Things happen that made me so proud of that girl! And, she's just a fictional character!
Needless to say, I loved this book, and I'm anxious for Gabi's story to come out next!
Breaking Through by Juliana Haygert was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved the first two books in this series and I am ashamed to say that I totally forgot about it until the author emailed me about an ARC and remembering how much I loved the previous books I jumped at the chance!
Firstly, I would advise that you read at least book 1 before reading this book. A lot of Hilary's issues and fears come from an event that happened in the first book so if you want the full explanation then I would definitely suggest it. Book 2 isn't as important to read prior to this book, but it's so good that you really should!
"His eyes...his impossibly blue eyes were killing me I could read so much in them - his worry, his concern, his caring. But was it enough? Was it as much as I wanted it to be?"
I really loved Hilary in this book. When I first met her in Breaking Free (book 1) I wasn't too sure of her, but from page 1 in this book I loved her. My heart really went out to her and all the fears she is now dealing with. She struggles with the smallest of things, like going to a bar with friends, and my heart felt for her every time she tried to confront a fear but was unable to.
The whole situation with Hilary and her reaction to the trauma she had faced in Breaking Free was totally realistic and at no point did anything feel dramatised. Also at no point did it feel like Hilary had just "healed" and was fine now. We get to see her grow as a person and gain back her confidence and independence as she beats each one of her fears.
"He had already bothered too much with me, more than he should have. I didn't want to become a problem in his life. He was so much better off without me."
Gui was the perfect mix of strong and sensitive. He was also an incredibly patient guy and even though you could see how much is frustrated him at times that Hilary wasn't able to confront her fears and let herself be with him, he never pushed her and was always there waiting for her when she would need him.
I loved the romance in this book and yes at times, just like Gui, I found it frustrating when Hilary wouldn't take that step towards being with him but it was totally worth it when it finally happened. I really liked that they had been friends first and able to build a strong foundation from that, and also the fact that their interest in each other wasn't a new thing so it didn't feel insta-love like at all. I really liked that although Gui helped her through a lot of her fears this wasn't a "healed by love" type story. He was there to remind her how strong she was and support her as she overcame her fears all by herself.
"I had come to make sure she was okay, to see with my own eyes, because what I felt for her didn't go away, wouldn't go away, even after she told me to leave her alone, to forget her, to go on and live my life without her."
I have loved the setting of this entire series and even though I know nothing about horses, ranches or polo I find myself totally immersed in the story and the action as it unfolds. It was quite refreshing in this book that Hilary wasn't involved with horses in anyway, unlike the couples in the previous two books, and instead was really into fashion. I always like reading about characters who have skills that I wish I did!
I was so so happy to get to see all of my favourite characters from the previous books again. We gets tons more swoony couple moments from Leo and Hannah, Bia and Garrett as well as some great moments from the entire group of friends together. I loved that even though they were the background characters in this book we still get to see their stories develop as part of Hilary and Gui's.
"If only you gave me a chance, I would take care of you." That was all I needed to hear.
Breaking Through is the third book in The Breaking series by Juliana Haygert and I would advise you to read the books in the order they were released to get the full impact of each of the characters especially Hillary because there is an terrible event that happened in Breaking Free that had such an effect on her she is still a shell of the person she had been back then. That being said, this was such a sweet friends to lovers story! I absolutely love Gui and Hillary together.
Hilary (Hil) had suffered through a traumatic event and now three years later she is still trying to control her panic attacks after what happened to her in Breaking Free (her sister Hannah's story). She panics whenever a man is close to her and with her close group of friends she tries to hid it as best as she can especially around the guys. Guilherme (Gui) is one of her friends and he has decided that he is the one that will help her with the fear list that her therapist had her write down. The first thing on her list is horses, this may sound strange if you haven't read the entire series (and you really should) but if you have then you'll understand.
Gui has always been a "player" with the ladies but when it comes to Hil he is the sweetest, most patient, and understanding man she can have to help her through everything...and heck it he gets her at the end he will be very happy because she is the one that will end his "player" days for good.
**This book does have domestic violence in it which maybe a turn off or trigger to some people (myself included) but it was so well written that even though it was there I still LOVED this story.
**I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.**
After Eric’s attack, Hilary became serious damaged mentally, having panic attacks at the smallest proximity of men but , ever so gently, Gui broke through all her defensive walls and captured her heart finding in himself all the patience and understanding needed to accomplish this task. This books reminded so much why I love the first one of this series... the good writing, the tasteful ways to bring serious topics into it and more important... the author is very good on develop the emotional connection between the characters. for the first time in this series we got chapters written trough GUI’s mind showing his feelings and I got to say that was amazing! Added so much details and intensified their connection.
This was my 2st book I have read, written by: Juliana ... I wonder if had read the 1st book, would I be more informed. Or? I did read #2 & #3, thinking I might need to read #1 first to be more in the series & all that jazz. Loved the book, Must read. ( ;
