You do not need to be a Preacher to find this book insightful and helpful, the content in this book is for anyone who desires to follow the Lord Christ Jesus with all their heart, mind, and soul. I highly recommend anyone who has any questions about Christianity and the life of a Christian to read this enlightening book.
I took two years reading this but it was time well spent. Very edifying!! I highly recommend this book, especially for those in the Reformed camp. I look forward to diving deeper into the theological works of the Puritans.
Random notes: Chapter 12 on the Perspicuity of Scripture was really interesting to me, especially in light of all the deconstruction going on in the church. The layout of the book threw me off at first, but it made sense once I got into it. When I went to export my highlights, Kindle said I had used 7% out of the 10% export allowance set by the publisher 😅
Dr. Beeke does an admirable job in taking 17th century Puritan Theology and contextualizing it for a 21st century readership. While the book does contain some sections with theological weightiness, perhaps the greatest benefit that the book offers is a bit more practical in nature. I would suggest that the book’s encyclopedic nature of recommended literature and its applicable advice, in subjects such as sermon preparation/grading, time management, etc., are the books greatest contributions. Anyone that desires to begin reading after the Puritans but doesn’t know where to start, anyone that struggles with family life, and anyone that is dealing with problems in ministry will all be equally profited by Beeke’s work.
Do not buy this volume thinking it is going to be a typical systematic theology. It is not grudem, Erickson, or berkhof. It is actually a series of lecture transcripts, essays, and articles of a full range of topics. In that way it is a systematic , the chapters show how one area of theology is dependent on several others. And it’s Beeke so naturally there is a bent and reliance on Puritan and Reformed history. It is still a fantastic volume and a great addition to every pastors library
This is a large collection of essays, lectures, booklets, and studies on beauty and power of Reformed theology focusing on the Puritans and other historic stalwarts of the Reformed Tradition.
