Everything is hotter with a British accent…

Sarah MacLean - A Duke Worth Falling For:

Her career in tatters, celebrity photographer Lilah Rose retreats to the British countryside, complete with fluffy sheep, rolling hills…and Max, the stern, sexy farmer who tends to them. But their lazy days and lush nights aren’t as far from the spotlight as Lilah thinks, and Max will have to reveal the truth if he is going to convince Lilah that some dukes are worth the risk.

Sophie Jordan - Better with You:

When the author of a controversial self-help book starts receiving threats, she has no choice but to accept a bodyguard on her UK book tour. Vee Mathers is famous for asserting that women don’t need men—especially for sex!—but at security specialist Luca Moretti’s first, burning touch, she starts to think she might need to revise her theory...

Louisa Edwards - Not a Bad Boy:

Writer Mallory Pritchard moved to London for research—and to get over a bad breakup. When she (literally) runs into Hollywood’s hottest action hero, Ian Hale, at a dog park, she realizes her heart isn’t as broken as she thought! Ian is even more devastatingly sexy in person, which makes Mallory wonder...is there room for a regular girl in his glamorous movie-star world?

Tessa Gratton - Songbird:

Former American soldier Daniel Kelly’s mission is simple: close the deal to buy a Welsh pub on behalf of his family’s corporation, and survive another anniversary of the worst day of his service. Too bad that from the moment he sees the pub’s owner, Elspeth Gwenlan is the only thing Daniel wants to conquer—even if it means lying to her about his agenda.

Sierra Simone - Supplicant:

After being left at the altar by her cold and brilliant professor, Church Cason, Charlotte Tenpenny had to leave school to take care of her younger brother. But a fateful night brings Church—and his delicious, drugging kisses—back into Charlotte's life. And it stirs up a reckoning years in the making . . .

A Duke Worth Falling For - Sarah MacLean

Falling in love with a farmhand kind of Duke

I've only finished the first story from Naughty Brits, A Duke Worth Falling For by Sarah MacLean, and it alone was enough to recommend buying this anthology. It's cute, funny, and gave me all the warm and fuzzy feelings. Considering this was a short story, I think Sarah MacLean definitely succeeded in giving us a swoon-worthy modern Duke to fall in love with. Ms MacLean also managed to succeed with the heroine as well. Max and Lilah were perfect together...warts and all. Their romance was fast, sexy and romantic. Even with it being a short story, I was convinced that their love would make it to the end.

Five Stars for A Duke Worth Falling For. I'm going to set my expectations high for the rest and lock in my 5 stars for the anthology. 🤞

******************************************

Better With You - Sophie Jordan

Better with the right man...

So, my expectations are still high with the Naughty Brits anthology, but I have to admit that Better With You was a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I still finished with a goofy smile on my face and grew to like the characters, it's just that it didn't make sense to me. Why would your publishing team hire a male bodyguard when your star author is writing about self-reliance and a woman not needing a man to be happy? Wouldn't that appear hypocritical? Couldn't they have hired a female bodyguard?

Anyways, when I was past my overthinking tendencies, I settled in and enjoyed Vee and Mr Moretti's love story. Turns out Vee could be happy on her own...but she could be even happier with a Naughty Brit by her side.

Four stars for Better With You. I'll leave my 5-star rating for now because I'm hoping that my average will still be up there.

*******************************************

Not a Bad Boy - Louisa Edwards

Not bad at all...

The mega movie star hero is not one I normally fall for, honestly, but in this case, I couldn't help but fall for Ian. He is not your everyday mega movie star...but then again, who and what is an everyday movie star?

Ian is famous but doesn't love the pressure attached to being recognised and adored worldwide. He has very little privacy, is expected to show his face at functions he has no desire to go to, and he is expected to 'perform' on demand. Ian is sick of being a face and body and would love to do movies besides the ones where he's expected to strip within the first 20 minutes. But, he knows he's a lucky bugger and he feels he owes too many people for the success and fame his career has given him.

Then, he meets a very sweet and smiley Mallory, and everything changes and he finally has something to smile about.

I really enjoyed this short story and loved seeing Mallory and Ian fall in love. It wasn't all sweet though and the two must learn to work through their feelings and get past their insecurities.

I'm going to keep my 5 stars overall but Not a Bad Boy comes in at a 4.5-star rating. I just get a little frustrated with curvy heroines and how it seems to be ALL about the curves and not so much about the woman with the curves.

I'm loving Naughty Brits and I'm diving straight into the next one.

*****************************************

Songbird - Tessa Gratton

Did she forgive him...???

While I enjoyed Songbird for the most part, I really thought that ending was too rushed. Yes, I know it's a short story and the author doesn't have the freedom to augment a grovel to the levels I hope for, but I didn't 'see' her forgive him. It went from I'm so hurt and broken to 'I love you' and 'let's dance'.

Again, I'm completely confused by characters who are determined to keep secrets when it's bloody obvious it will blow up in their faces. Of course, it blew up in his face and of course, it was doom and gloom, the world is coming to an end. Luckily, most of the story was sweet and cute, the doom and gloom was short-lived and everything was hunky-dory by the end.

I'll keep that 5-star rating overall but Songbird gets a 4-star rating from me because of that rushed ending. Tessa Gratton wrote a great story but I think I would have preferred a full-length novel for an introduction to really 'see' what she can do.

****************************************

Supplicant - Sierra Simone

Lots of passion in this one...

Wow!!

I loved hating Supplicant as much as I hated loving Supplicant. This is one of those stories where your emotions are to the EXTREME!! I had tears in my eyes when Charley went through the heartbreak of Church's betrayal. I was fidgety in my anger at Church when he explained why he had abandoned Charley. I was squirming from the sexual tension between Charley and Church ... yet hating that Church still had the power to make Charley vulnerable to his charms. Then there was the satisfaction I felt at the end when they had found their happiness together. My emotions were all over the shop and I think Sierra Simone did it on purpose.

Yes, I hated loving Supplicant as much as I loved hating Supplicant ... and that dear friends, is why this story gets a 5-star rating.

*****************************************

So at the end of the day, I really enjoyed Naughty Brits. If I was to average out the 5 stories it comes in at 4.5-stars. But, I'm feeling mighty generous and because the mix worked well, I'm going keep that 5-star overall rating. I loved revisiting with authors I've read before and I was glad to have the opportunity to 'meet' some new ones too.

If you're looking for an anthology with a good mix of stories, I highly recommend giving this one a try.

Ok, so I'm making my way through this....some thoughts.

Sarah's:
me: you could not possibly make a sheep farmer and modern day duke hot to me. He probably has bad teeth and smells funny from hanging out with sheep all day.
Sarah: hold my beer.
Me: clearly I was very wrong. I bow down, as always, to your greatness.
[full disclosure, Sarah and I are friends and cohost a podcast, so you know]

Sophie's:
LISTEN GODDAMN DO I LOVE A STERN, TACITURN BODYGUARD. This worked for me, but I think it was a lot of plot jammed into a novella, but it all worked out in the end. The hard part of this for me is that it definitely has a "magic penis" vibe, bc this woman who has never come with a partner all of a sudden can almost get there just with grinding? However, he does work for it a lot and loves going downtown, and it was great and I loved it.

Louisa's:
omg! This is me mashing the one click button on her entire backlist because I LOVED THIS ONE. Is there anything better than a handsome movie star falling head over heels in love with you? THERE IS NOT. I will guess that there will be some folks who won't love the fat rep, this is a woman who has real concerns about her body, but I will only say it felt like Louisa pried right into my own brain and put my very real feelings right there on page. Just pitch fucking perfect.

I've spent a week working my way through this delicious anthology. A perfect read to kick off the Fall season, the stories within perfectly fit the theme "naughty Brits" and were loosely connected by a fancy gala hosted in the British Museum (a touch I appreciated).

Sarah MacLean - A Duke Worth Falling For: FIVE STARS, glorious, my favorite of the antho (I am an avowed Sarah fan so I might be biased).

I slowly savored Sarah MacLean's A Duke Worth Falling For like a hot mug of cider. Crisp, warming, and tart. Welcome to contemporary Sarah. More anytime you like. The touches of MacLean's historical prowess are tucked into this contemporary, with farmer Max having a bit of a "man out of his time" feel in the best way. He's both irritated and completely smitten by Lilah Rose, famous photographer on the outs from her career due to an awful rich man. My favorite trope "we only have this arbitrary amount of time before this ends" was in full and perfect display, as Lilah and Max have to contend with the the looming date of her return to "society" and Max having to contend with the fact he withheld information. I was a bit worried about the big "lie" from Max, but felt overall he grovelled enough for the omission. Also, him being a Duke had no impact on Lilah's career/power, just on her heart.

Sophie Jordan - Better with You: I do love a body guard romance so much, and this one is so sexy. I loved that the heroine was promoting her "love yourself" book and learned that you can love yourself and also have a really burly delicious lover give you really great orgasms too. I do wish this had a dual POV but that is absolutely a me thing.

Louisa Edwards - Not a Bad Boy: omg my kingdom to be knocked down by a Chris-Evans-type's dog in a park and fall in love. My first by this author, I definitely need to read more of her work! Super delicious British food descriptions along with an utterly smitten and sexy AF movie star who does what it takes to show a writer/food historian she's beautiful and absolutely fuckable. The heroine is fat and some of the conflict in the story revolves around her feelings about her body (and the media). The hero is never involved with these fears.

Tessa Gratton - Songbird: A Welsh pub owner finds she really adores bossing around the visitor in town who wears absolutely amazing waistcoats and bespoke suits (she especially loves to make him come in his pants whew). For a "first romance" for this fantasy author, wow I loved this story. I definitely enjoyed having both POVs, and did get angry about the big secret the hero was holding back from the heroine. But totally fire sex scenes.

Sierra Simone - Supplicant: I truly wanted to punch this professor in the face. One of those romances I absolutely devoured but also have conflicted feelings about. The religious imagery is superb and left me feeling some kind of way (lapsed catholic that I am). The epilogue though holy wow okay fine I loved it. How does Simone do this to me everytime?

I’ll be honest: I bought this just for Sarah’s story (which of course was perfection).

I know I’ll get to the rest of these eventually, but I don’t want the book sitting on my currently reading shelf. I’ll update as I finish.

Sarah MacLean - A Duke Worth Falling For: If you don’t already know a Sarah story is going to be outstanding before you even begin, I’m side-eyeing you lol She is so darn brilliant it is ridiculous! This story was humorous and swoony and an all-around feel-good romance! I fell in love with both Lilah and Max from the start!

Sierra Simone – Supplicant: Deliciously filthy with a sprinkle of suspense! MY GOD this woman is good at the words! *fans self*

Sophie Jordan - Better with You: It’s always the quiet ones you have to watch out for ;) I have zero experience with this author so flew in blind on this one. It didn’t wow me, but I liked it *shrug* There seemed to be a lot going on for such a short story but not in a not working way for the plot … Now that I’ve confused you …

Louisa Edwards - Not a Bad Boy: still reading

Tessa Gratton – Songbird: still reading

Even tho I still have 2 stories to read, I am giving this collection 5 stars as a whole because I’ve heard good things about the remaining two stories and that’s good enough for me!

When you hear that one of your favourite historical romance authors is writing a contemporary duke romance novel, of course, I had to read it the next second.
It’s so beautiful written and has a bit of everything, from a trans-Atlantic romance with funny moments that involves a sheep or two , very steamy scenes in true Sarah style, to a few twists and turns because there’s royalty involved and everything is possible.
It’s just perfect for a Sunday afternoon while drinking a cup of English tea and falling in love with Max and Lilah.

I bought this anthology for the Sarah MacLean story…she wrote a contemporary!! OMG guys it’s amazing! But I kept reading for both familiar authors and new names to me. This was a very sexy and for the most part fantastic anthology! All 5 stories are linked through a common event-sex at the British Museum. What a neat way to connect an anthology! I don’t usually envision movie stars as characters, but this anthology really made me think of certain ones. I’m sharing that with you guys.

Sarah MacLean-5 stars

This was my favorite story in the anthology. I found myself smiling almost the entire story. You still get all of the emotion and romance in a full-length story, and it really makes me love Sarah MacLean all the more for being able to pack all of that into a novella and still make it a happy story. I envisioned Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan; I don’t think the characters looked like them, but it just for some reason made me think of them. This is a happy story.

Sophie Jordan- 3.5 stars

Sexy and fun, I liked the bodyguard romance. The heroine annoyed me at first with her self-righteousness however I feel that changed and it worked. I really loved the bodyguard. He was fantastic and he took his job seriously. I thought of Henry Cavill.

Louisa Edwards-4 stars

This was fun. Imagine Tom Hardy at a dog park who falls for an average girl. It’s sweet and cute and like a sexy Rom Com.

Tessa Gratton-4 stars

I have never read this author and I liked this one a lot, but I felt the hero held his secret for too long. This was my second favorite in the anthology. Chris Evans and his sweater from Knives Out stole the show here.

Sierra Simone- 1 star

I did not like this story. This is about a professor and his student and he left her at the altar and I hated both of them. It was meant to be sexy I guess. I found it frustrating. She was left at the altar and she gets back with him later. IMO his reasons sucked and she was so much better than him. She deserved better. After reading a lot of reviews, I think this author just may not be for me. I envisioned Tom Hiddleston as Church. Sadly even that didn’t help me with the story.

All in all, a pretty solid anthology, and one that has me wanting to visit the British Museum 😉

A fantastic collection

A mega collection by superstars in the romance genre. Five incredibly touching, amazingly well-written, smolderingly sexy stories. I’m raring to read more books by these authors.

A Duke Worth Falling For by Sarah MacLean 5 ⭐️s
Sarah CAN write contemporary romance. I’m getting La Nora vibes with the strong yet vulnerable heroine in Lilah Rose and the brooding reluctant duke in Max, and the #metoo victory. I wish she’d write more contemporary. Simon’s story next, please?

Better With You by Sophie Jordan 4⭐️s
Super sexy and while Sophie gave herself a difficult job with the premise of the not-needing-men feminist heroine, she eventually made it work.

Not a Bad Boy by Louisa Edwards 4.5 ⭐️s
The longest of the novellas, this has well-developed characters, fantasy-fulfilling plotline, and hot hot hot hands-free sexy time. My first story by Ms. Edwards. It won't be the last.

Songbird by Tessa Graton 4 ⭐️s
Awesome sense of place. This story really took me for a visit to Wales. Good handling of a deception storyline.

Supplicant by Sierra Simone 4 ⭐️s
The most out there of the novellas, this had me going back and forth with my rating. It's uncomfortable and messy. In the end, I went for a higher grade because it's very involving and reminded me that love can be chaotic at times.

♥️ ♥️ ♥️
* İlk hikayemiz Sarah MacLean'dan A Duke Worth Falling For... İsminden de belli bir dük var.😂 Rupert Maximillian Arden, Weston and Earl Salterton'ın on dördüncü dükü. Kısa bir ismi olması asla kabul edilemez😂 Ama biz kısaca Max diyelim. Dükümüz kendi halinde, arazisinde gezerken birde ne görsün. Masum masum otlayan koyunu Mabel, arazisine davetsiz giren Lilah Rose'un üstüne üstüne gidiyor. Skandal 😂

♥️ ♥️ ♥️

* Sophie Jordan - Better With You
Senin güvenliğin her şeyden önemli.

♥️ ♥️ ♥️
* Not a Bad Boy - Louisa Edwards

♥️ ♥️ ♥️

* Songbird - Tessa Gratton

♥️ ♥️ ♥️

* Supplicant - Sierra Simone

He canım he 😂
Olay şu ki pislik Church , Charlotte'yi kilisede öylece terk eder. Pardon kiliseye gelmez bile. Kızımız da gözü yaşlı başı dik ayrılır oradan. Zaten zor durumdadır. Birde baba olacak adam tüm birikimi ve maddi her şeyi alıp yok olmuştur. On iki yaşında bir kardeşle beş parasız , kocasız ortada kalmıştır. Ah tabi bir açıklama da yok. Okey.

OKUMAYIN! Gerek yok 😂

The problem with anthologies is that not all stories are created equal. This collection boasts 2 fabulous stories and 3 duds.
The good ones are really great. Sarah MacLean really shines in the first short, making me wish she wrote more contemporary romances. And Tessa Gratton is amazing. It’s her first foray into the romance world and makes one sincerely hope it’s not her last.
The ones I didn’t name - yeah those are the ones whose books I felt was penance to pay for the one I loved.

This was such a good anthology! I love novellas and I love Britain, and the British Museum (which is a recurring setting) so I was predestined to love this book. The lead story by Sarah Maclean with a photographer heroine, secret duke/farmer hero was so fantastic! And just really checked all my favorites things. A couple of these authors were new to me and I really enjoyed the introduction to their work. The one that was most surprising for me was by Louisa Edwards - an author I hadn't read before and a trope I usually like (movie star), but I really enjoyed that one.

I loved the two stories I read in this anthology. As soon as I heard a Romance Anthology was coming all featuring a Naughty Brit I knew I had to read it and it did not disappoint. I loved that each story features one Brit and one American and in the end they all end up at the same event, a fundraiser in a British Museum. Although all different stories they all have a connection that way and I thought that was unique for an anthology.

A Duke Worth Falling For
Sarah MacLean

5 stars!

This was my first read by Sarah MacLean. I have been wanting to read her books for quite some time and knew a novella in this anthology would be the perfect introduction to her writing. I am most definitely a new fan of her work. A Duke Worth Falling For was short and sweet. The story features Rupert Maximillian Arden. The fourteenth Duke of Weston. He stumbles upon an American celebrity photographer, Lilah Rose who has no idea who he is and he is immediately attracted to her and the fact that she has no idea who he is but can she forgive him once she learns the truth? This is a quick and fast romance given that it is a novella but MacLean’s descriptive writing and character development was excellent.

Supplicant
Sierra Simone

5 stars!

Sierra Simone’s writing in Supplicant is red hot! I devoured it. Church and Charley were incredible together. Insanely hot chemistry like I’ve never read before. Typical to Simone’s usual style it is addicting from beginning to end. Even though this was a short story over eight chapters Simone developed the perfect story mixed with the right amount of steam and a touch of angst and suspense. The writing is gripping and deliciously filthy.

A Duke Worth Falling For - Sarah Maclean

Few authors do the kind of work in entire novels that Sarah Mac manages to do in this novella, which is everything wholesome and satisfying. With her first foray into contemporary, the author reminds me of a classic Nora Roberts novel, with a unique Sarah twist. A strong successful heroine, and the hero who worships her even while he deceives her just a little. Because oh yeah, he’s an honest to god, modern day Duke. Swoons. Lilah and Max’s story is sweet and sexy and a little bit heartbreaky and very current, even with its Duke and follies and sheep and the idyllic English countryside.

Supplicant by Sierra Simone

Church on a Cracker. Was this just a novella? Because the sheer amount of story and angst and HEAT that Reverend Simone brings in this story is unparalleled. And frankly, something even some 500 page books don’t manage. The entirety of my arc is basically highlighted in different colors because the power in those words is something else. This story also proves that the author is the undisputed queen of yearning, because oh my heart, Church and Charlotte are just this big mess of yearning and devotion that had me all up in my feels. It’s rare for me to tear up in a novella, but the author manages it. And no wonder with the risks she takes in the narrative right from the get go. Also, I’d let Professor James Church Cason discipline me anytime.

I enjoyed the anthology as a whole, but Sarah MacLean’s story was the best for sure. Of the remaining four, one was ok and one just made me ick out repeatedly. But the surprise runner up for me was Sierra Simone’s dark and desperate but oh so hot story at the end. Delicious!

EDIT 6 JUNE 2021

I won't lie... I got this anthology for Sarah MacLean's story. I also have to be honest and say it's been a few months since I read the book, so you're about to get the lasting impressions review.

Anthologies can be a hit or miss situation for me. I don't think they're (typically) as heavily edited, and some stories are naturally going to work better for me than others. This was certainly the case for Naughty Brits.

As a whole, I did enjoy this collection. It did something I particularly love to find: all of the stories were connected in a way. A single event tied everything together, and small moments in one story affected the plot in another. Once I figured out the connection, I looked forward to seeing how each subsequent tale fit into the collective narrative.

But let's break things down, story by story.

Sarah MacLean's A Duke Worth Falling For
Tropes: mistaken identity, forced proximity, holiday

Like I said, Sarah is the reason I read this at all. She writes what I like, and she hasn't failed me yet!

American photographer Lilah had to take a break from her celebrity life after an incident with a rich dude that killed her career. She ends up in the British countryside thanks to the offer of free accommodation from a friend, and after an encounter with some sheep, meets who she believes is just a farmer. Except he's actually a duke. The two start off on rocky ground, but that attraction. *chef's kiss*. It's delicious. I loved the heat, but I also loved the encounters with the locals, who all knew who Max actually was but kept the ruse going.

Best story of the lot!
How is Sarah McLean so bloody perfect? I’m going to have a hangover from this swoonfest.

Sophie Jordan's Better with You
Tropes: only one bed, road trip, hate-to-love, bodyguard

Vee wrote a book that made a lot of men angry (lol), so her publisher forces her to have a bodyguard while on a UK book tour. Her bodyguard ends up being a sexy Italian Brit named Luca. (His family has an Italian restaurant – always a bonus in a love interest!) She doesn't want him around, doesn't like how he invades her privacy, etc. etc. Makes sense, I wouldn't like it either. But also, hello, you are getting death threats and actual incidents at events so please stop being so grumpy, Vee.

Anyway, I don't remember too much of the details, but I do remember that this was maybe not suited to a short story. The rushed storyline made the sexual activities seem extra unprofessional for both of them. I don't know. I feel like this kind of trope is better for slow-burn romances, not quick road trips. I just couldn't get into this as much.
While I liked the premise, Sophie Jordan’s bodyguard story didn’t quite deliver. It felt rushed, with feelings ramping up unnaturally, and no real talking things out.

Louisa Edwards' Not a Bad Boy
Tropes: movie star hero, curvy heroine

Thinking back to January, I remember two things I loved about this particular story: the heroine is curvy and nerdy, and the sexy action star hero loves dogs. I don't have any other strong feelings beyond that, though it does make me want to get a puppy so I can take it to one of London's nicer parks and see if I can run into anyone hot.
Curvy nonfiction author meets sexy but pained actor in Louisa Edwards’ offering, and yeah, I enjoyed seeing someone like me in a story.

Tessa Gratton's Songbird
Tropes: public sex, hidden identity, military hero

I didn't get this one at all. In fact, I remember forcing myself through the story while feeling mighty uncomfortable. There was a lot of public grinding and making a mess of one's clothes. Maybe other people are ok with that, but I imagined being in those situations and felt gross. It's not my kink.

That being said, I would love to go to Wales, and I also would love for pubs to play classical music. So there's that. But I'm sad about multinational corporations taking over family businesses. What a downer.

I've been meaning to read Tessa's YA books though. I have a feeling those will be more my style.
Too many things made me cringe in Tessa Gratton‘s story for me to say I enjoyed it. Like, what about the cameras in the museum?! What’s with this obsession of getting their clothes visibly covered in you know what???

Sierra Simone's Supplicant
Tropes: second chance, wrong side of the tracks, revenge, forbidden love, alpha hero

The final story of the lot is for those of you who like your darker, sexier, D/S romances. I genuinely didn't know how I was going to get on board with this one when it started out, as it involved a professor and his former student, who started their relationship when she was his actual student. I'm not ok with those dynamics. But she's no longer his student in the present, and she's pissed. The forbidden chemistry was fantastic, but her fury pushing him to redeem himself was even better. I need to read more from Sierra for sure.
...the surprise runner up for me was Sierra Simone’s dark and desperate but oh so hot story at the end. Delicious!

It's time to get your Brit on. How about some naughty style? If this sounds like you then you should dive into Naughty Brits.

It has been ages since I read a Sarah MacLean book and she reminded me why I love her work so much. She has a unique writing style that grabs you and hooks you.

When I see Sierra's written a book it's an instant one-click for me her writing is just phenomenal whichever style she is writing.

Sophie Jordan, Louisa Edwards, Tessa Gratton are new to me authors and although I haven't finished their sections of the anthology I'm looking forward to seeing how they complement the other fantastic works in this anthology.

A must get anthology!

This whole collection is stories about, you guessed it, British heroes. Except one, which has a Welsh heroine and (I think) an American hero. Enjoyable enough but nothing to write home about. It was a nice way to be exposed to some new authors, including the very popular Sarah MacLean. Her story is the first and probably the best. I bought it for Sierra Simone's story (she's one of my faves) and while her story was good, she laid it on quite thick with the kinky theology. Sophie Jordan's story was forgettable and Louisa Edwards's contribution was fun but a little laughable at points. Tessa Gratton's I just started to skim after a while.

I read Supplicant by Sierra Simone and wowowow. Church and Charley were explosive, even for an anthology short. Simone packed a lot of everything into 8 chapters. Filth. A touch of angst. And lots of heart.

Church was alpha but not overbearing. Charley was submissive but not weak. They fit together like puzzle pieces, worshipping each other as their own altars.

For Sarah’s story alone, this gets 5 stars. It was perfection.
I also enjoyed Sophie Jordan's (it reminded me of her Devil's Rock series, which I have a soft spot for).

A really good collection of 5 contemporary romance novellas. Sarah Maclean's story was my favorite and I'd read her novels if it wasn't all historical.

3.5 stars to Sarah MacLeans’s story - very cute but I didn’t love how LONG he took to tell her he’s a duke. And the ending was super rushed (I know it’s a short story!) but I was confused that he didn’t tell her immediately at the gala? A little wobbly on the dismount but it does make me super want to read more Sarah MacLean contemporary if she ever decided to write more!

4 stars to Sophie Jordan’s story. I do like a body guard story! And the complicated back story! I wish it was dual pov.

2 stars to Louisa Edwards. Did not care for the movie star fantasy of it all, and I think this one really suffered for the lack of dual pov.

I couldn’t really get into the Theresa Gratton story, so dnf there (almost certainly my mood), and Sierra Simone’s oeuvre isn’t for me so I did not try.

4.5 Stars The standouts for me for this really great anthology was Sarah MacLean and while she shines in her genre, she is no slouch at contemporary and I hope she considers doing more in the future.

3.5 for Sophie Jordon, she was the only other author I knew. The other 3 were all NTM. I will give an honorable mention and 3.75 to Tessa Gratton, she did a good job for putting sparks on the page. The 4.0 goes to Sierra Simone, her addition made me the most uncomfortable, mad, turned on, teary-eyed and in love all with Church in the end. Well done!

So, Naughty Brits is a super-fun anthology (it's all m/f couples, even if a couple of the characters seems to be bi or pan in their history) and seem to be arranged in order of increasing filthiness:

1. Sarah MacLean - sweet, more traditionally structured, H seems to be from the line of Matthew MacFadyen characters in boots and a sweater, plus-sized heroine, steamy sex scenes, including one on top of a "folly" on his estate in the outdoors
2. Sophie Jordan - quick and dirty, H is described as an Italian Henry Cavill lookalike, he's the bodyguard, she's a curvy author with three trash ex-husbands who wrote a book about not needing men that's making TEH DOODZ predictably mad; there's bananas sex in a museum stairwell
3. Louisa Edwards - the only author in the anthology I've never read before; plus-sized nonfiction writer researching the history of cookbooks meets a clear Tom Hardy-like Very Famous Actor while they're each walking their dogs in Regents' Park; there's steamy no-touching scene in a study room at the British Museum plus what is possibly the drrrrrtiest BJ in the backseat of a car
4. Tessa Gratton - her first published adult romance writing; Welsh pub owner who studied opera and is trying to decide whether to sell her family's pub and an ex-military guy who seems also to be a Henry Cavill but American lookalike whose family company is the one trying to buy the pub (clearly, there is a lie by omission); bonkers messy sexytimes up against standing stones and in the doorway to one of the British Museum's galleries
5. Sierra Simone - absolutely the filthiest story of the bunch, which is unsurprising given her previous writing; it's a student/former student and her archaeology professor - who are clearly into kink - but he left her at the altar four years ago and on meeting her at a museum event (where she's working as a caterer) he immediately gets her off in one of the galleries; later there's just flat-out exhibitionism in the Museum; I couldn't tell you what he's supposed to look like because he doesn't seem clearly described but after this week's circulation of that deceptive movie poster of Johnny Flynn getting pegged against a wall (which is UNFORTUNATELY NOT what that movie is about) that's what he looks like in my head now

I am in love with this anthology of sexy broody Brits. I read Sierra Simone and Sarah MacLean's novellas.

Supplicant

Sierra just knows what I want in a story. Idk if she has magical powers or what but she just gets me. This story was hot, passionate, angsty and just so everything that I was looking for. Church and Charley were made for each other.

I felt like I went through a whole journey with these two because there were so many emotions BIG EMOTIONS packed into the story along with ache. SO MUCH ACHE, y'all. Only Sierra could do this and make me want more.

A Duke Worth Falling For

This was my first SM read and boy oh boy! I am a fan now.

I'm always a sucker for secret identity tropes and Sarah just did everything right with this one.

The chemistry between Max and Lilah was to die for. These two made me wish I was meeting a farmer who was really a royal and madly in love with my charms. I AM NORMAL OKAY!

I was just so happy to read these stories and bask in the glory of men who are completely smitten with their women and know how to grovel. I really enjoyed this anthology and I cannot wait to read the rest asap.

I was super excited to land an arc of this anthology. For one, it featured Sarah MacLean dipping her toes into contemporary waters for the first time. It also featured stories by new-to-me authors, Louisa Edwards and Tessa Gratton and I’m always excited about the possibility of discovering a brand new author’s backlist to dive into.

In A Duke Worth Falling For by Sarah MacLean, we’re introduced to famous celebrity photographer Lilah Rose and a farmer named Max who is also, unbeknownst to Lilah, the Duke of Weston. Normally, secret identity tropes don’t work well for me but this one really hit the spot. First of all, Sarah MacLean is well known for being the modern day queen of white cishet histrom so I was very curious about her foray into contemporary and she did NOT disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the trademark wit and banter that are the hallmarks of MacLean’s writing. Love stories set amidst the British aristocracy is very much her bread and butter but she puts a brand new 21st century spin on it that really worked for me.

Sophie Jordan’s Better With You, on the other hand, encapsulates my main problem with novellas: not enough space to tell a complete story with nuance and depth and fully fledged characters and plot and a romance that doesn’t seem rushed. I am not a writer but I’ve been told that it’s maybe even harder to write a novella than a full length book. (To clarify, both seem equally difficult to me). The bodyguard trope with a side order of forced proximity is exactly my jam but feels rushed in this particular offering and when the story ends, it’s with more of a HFN (happy for now) rather than a full on HEA (happily ever after) which seems appropriate given that the two characters, in my opinion, fell more into headlong lust than into headlong love. The sexual attraction between the two main characters is never in doubt but the story never seems to move beyond that so I’m glad that it did not end with the two characters declaring their undying love for one another. I would have found such a declaration completely implausible.

Louisa Edwards is a new-to-me author and I was very excited for Not a Bad Boy, especially because in a Facebook chat with all five authors, she revealed her story involves a scene where the heroine achieves sexual satisfaction and it’s completely hands free. How, I wondered, is that even possible?!? Well, dear reader, not only is it possible, it’s delightfully, ridiculously HOT and includes a dirty talking hero with a mouth so filthy, I had to actually put the book down and fan myself before I could continue. However, I will say this novella also contains fat shaming and fat representation that seemed...iffy to me, at best. The story features a fat heroine meeting and falling for a famous actor and part of the problem is that I recently read Olivia Dade’s brilliant Spoiler Alert, which also features a fat heroine meeting and falling for a famous actor. I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two stories here but I will say no one writes fat representation the way that Olivia does and I really missed some of the nuances of that in this story. There is a scene where the two main characters are being chased through the streets of London by aggressive paparazzi and one of them, in a bid to get their attention, calls the heroine a pejorative name that may be triggering for many. I will say, all that aside, the writing was strong, the characters were likable and I am very interested in investigating this author’s prolific backlist.

Tessa Gratton’s Songbird was the story I was most looking forward to. Tessa is brand new to romance and after having read her story, I honestly and fervently hope that she continues to write in this genre. Not only is this story hot (really, all the stories in this book are HOT) but it focuses on two characters who are both dealing with loss and grief and in the case of the hero, trauma, in very different ways. The story is beautiful and complex and involves really excellent commentary on grief and manages to balance it with a love story that is both sweet and tender and humorous. I was fully immersed in these characters and in the rich, vibrant setting, so beautifully rendered by Tessa’s words that it felt like I was actually there and not sitting in my own house. Again, I hope she writes more in this genre - I would unequivocally read her again.

The final story in this anthology is Sierra Simone’s Supplicant. I’ve read enough of this author to know that however hot I thought the earlier stories were, this last one would take the heat level up several notches. There’s no easy way to say this so I’m going to be blunt. Sierra Simone is a fantastic author and a masterful wordsmith. Her research is immaculate and her prose is beyond perfection. However, and I fully know I’m totally in the minority with this opinion, her writing somehow always takes me out of the story. I never feel connected to the characters and fully immersed in the story. Part of the problem is the fact that her heroes always have a twisty, cruel aspect to their nature. While I’m willing to suspend disbelief and may find many heroes attractive on the page who I wouldn’t find attractive in real life, Sierra’s heroes tend to leave me feeling cold. I can totally get why so many readers would find them appealing but they just don’t work for me. As the saying goes, there’s a hat for every head and maybe Sierra Simone’s writing is just not the hat for my head. But again, I stress, the writing itself is brilliant and moving at times. I’m not left completely unaffected, I just don’t find myself fully invested in the way that I would like.

All that to say, some of these stories worked for me, some less so but over all, I would definitely recommend this anthology.
