The Finn Chronicles: Year One: A dog's reports from the front lines of hooman rescue

Rate this book
Training rescued hoomans is a stressful job, but somedoggy has to do it. The Finn Chronicles is a unique story told by an extraordinary dog. He’s irreverent, funny, and full of sass. Based on his real life, join Finn as he issues weekly reports back to K9 Rescue Headquarters on the strange behaviors and rituals of his rescue-hoomans. With sarcastic wit, he observes the curious world around him, heroically saves his unwitting hoomans from dangers (see also: evil electric toothbrush), and shares his musings about the often-lackluster level of service he feels he receives. With bonus content like links to Finn’s social media and videos, you’ll get to see this vocal and energetic dog in action. You’re sure to fall in love with Finn, his hilarious facial expressions, his tantrums and even his dim-witted hoomans. This is the light-hearted and funny read we need in these not so light-hearted times. Don't miss your chance to fall in love with Finn and follow him on social media for year round laughs and love!

Finn's dutiful transcriber, Gwen Romack (aka The Squishy One), is a Maryland native, avid dog lover, and rescue volunteer. Gwen and her husband Evan (aka The Hairy One) initially agreed to foster Finn to work on some behavior issues and get him ready for a furever family. She began posting Finn's weekly updates on Facebook as a way to help prospective adopters fall in love with Finn. But it became clear pretty quickly that Finn was already home. The posts had become so popular in the Vizsla community that she decided to continue sharing Finn’s view of life as a dog rescuing his difficult and confusing hoomans.

When her corporate job as an ethics, compliance and anti-corruption officer was eliminated in the early days of the COVID pandemic, Gwen decided it was time to develop Finn’s funny updates into books for everyone to enjoy. Since the first book was published in July 2020, Finn has brought laughter and joy to fans in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Brazil and even the Swiss Alps. Both books reached best-seller status and hot new release status on Amazon’s charts and his fans get to enjoy his daily antics through social media.

The Finn Chronicles: Year One: A Dog’s Reports from the Front Lines of Hooman Rescue by Gwen Romack is a humorous account of the first year spent by Finn Count Smooshie Tushie in the home of the Hairy one and the Squishy One. Each week Finn sends a report back to his rescue headquarters to help train the younger cadets and update the files on the strange rituals of hoomans. All of the Finnanigan reports are told in a comical way, including discussions on anal leakage, his hatred of baths, dog farts, and the difficulty Finn has in training his silly hoomans. Finn is very good at using hashtags as part of his storyline.

Finn is a mix of Hungarian Vizsla, Beagle, and Pittie. Vizslas in particular are sensitive and intense dogs that need special owners. The beagle in him loves to howl. His antics are funny but often frustrating. He loves zoomie-fueled 40mph head butts and takes pride in being called The Kissy Bandit. Fortunately, he seems to have gotten over his love of chewing flip flops and upholstered chairs.

As you read these reports you’ll laugh out loud, while marveling at the patience of the owners. In the first 21 weeks of being in their home, Finn helped support luxury lifestyles for the family vets by getting a UTI, squamous papilloma, a pulled muscle, allergies, blown paw pads from playing too hard, surgery, and a bacterial infection. This is in addition to the cost of his doggy day camps, sitters, endless toy and treat supply, clothing, and special bedding. The book is a great reminder that true pet love comes with a financial commitment.

Finn’s dutiful transcriber, Gwen Romack (aka The Squishy One), is a Maryland native, avid dog lover, and rescue volunteer. Gwen and her husband Evan (aka The Hairy One) agreed to foster Finn a year after losing their beloved Vizsla/Pit mix, Mr. Snuggles, at age 14. She began posting Finn’s weekly updates on Facebook as a way to help prospective adopters fall in love with Finn. However, it became clear pretty quickly that she and her husband would become “foster fails” and Finn was already home! The posts became so popular in the Vizsla community that she decided to continue indulging Finn and letting him dictate his view of life as a dog rescuing his difficult hoomans.

I was given a free copy of this book by the Squishy One in exchange for an honest review. I recommend this book to dog lovers, anyone needing a laugh, and especially to anyone who is considering adopting a dog with an intense personality.

As the "Squishy One" of a Finnegan of my own, I felt this book to my very core. Training a puppy is not for the weak, and I can't imagine training a human is any easier. This book is hilarious, a definite must read for anyone who is a dog owner, a dog lover, or anyone who might be looking for a dog to adopt. I can't wait to read The Finn Chronicles: Year Two!

The Finn Chronicles by Gwen Romack is an interesting and fun book which revolves around the life of Finn, a rescue dog, narrated from the perspective of Finn himself. He undertakes the task that is assigned to him – rescuing and protecting the hoomans with whom he lives. While reading the book, after just a few pages, I was so engrossed because it is not often that we get to read stories about pets through such an interesting perspective – the love shown by him, the drama and chaos that ensues when things don’t go according to him, his status as the kisser when it comes to other dogs (:p) and his understanding of the various situations around him.
This book was like a breath of fresh air because of how different it was. In addition to this, what makes it even more fun to read is the hashtags which link to videos of Finn posted on Facebook as well as various photos that are part of the book which hilarious captions. The book made me feel very good and being a person who has always wanted a dog, it made me feel like I had one right beside me.

This book is such a fun read. I bought it for myself, but it soon became clear that my 9 year old girls would enjoy it just as much, if not more. I asked them to read it to me and that was such fun - we laughed so much - until they couldn’t wait and quickly devoured it independently. I guess I can’t blame them - a book featuring a dog, making fun of adults and hashtags is totally irresistible for their demographic. I loved it too - this book is funny, charming and all around lovable. We all look forward to the 2nd book!

Finn, the 'author' of this delightful read is the funniest character. He has such insight into the lives and personalities of his adoptive 'hoomans' . I loved this book and have purchased copies to give as gifts to my dog loving friends. I am happy to say that they are passing it on to their dog loving friends as well.
Now off to buy Year Two!!! Another 5 star winner!

Finn is funny and charming as he files his reports on training his rescue hoomans, and I thoroughly enjoyed him, but I'm sure glad he's not training me. His rescue hoomans are saints.

Count Finnegan tells all: the ups, the downs, the treats, the vet visits, the walks and all the rest of his first year adventures rescuing The Hairy One and the Squishy One. Finn's voice is, by turns, exasperated, skeptical, fearful, boastful, confused and triumphant!

This is a charming book. You'll laugh; you'll cry; you'll be glad (sometimes) that Finn doesn't live at YOUR house!

Hilarious and heartfelt

It's easy to see, from Finns point of view, just how silly and confusing we all are. However he patiently keeps trying to put things right no matter how long it takes or how many poops in the house. My own dogs kept looking at me like I was nuts when I would laugh and laugh, because they weren't doing anything and weren't about to.
