I enjoyed reading this. It tells its own story while reminding me of Watership Down, Redwall, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, and Mouse Guard. The back story about the end of humanity and the rise of self-awareness in animals is what sets this apart so far.

Сама ідея набуття тваринами інтелекту та волі мені сподобалася. Протистояння різних угрупувань, що вірять кожна в свою філософію виглядає достатньо сучасно, але через устрій, ієрархію та засоби вирішення конфліктів це скоріше нагадує феодальне середньовіччя, хоча, якщо філософію замінити релігією, то все ідеально лягає в періодику середньовіччя. В історію запаковано все — любов, дружба, зрада, розкаяння, політика і кров. Дуже багато крові. Комікс реально виправдовує свою помітку "18+"
Сторітелінг достатньо логічний та послідовний, перша збірка вводить в курс справ, знайомить з персонажами та розстановкою сил.
Головні та другорядні персонажі непогано прописані, читачеві зрозуміла мотивація і до деяких навіть встигаєш проникнутися симпатією чи навпаки.
Малюнок добре лягає в історію, загальні плани, кольори, анатомія персонажів виконана на рівні, зважаючи на те, що комікс про білок, мишей, котів та інших дрібних та не дуже тварин. Хоча в динамічних сценах в мене виникали питання до ракурсів та розміщення панелей, воно як на мене, не завжди інтуїтивне та логічне.
В коміксі присутня сюжетна лінія людей, події в якій відбуваються за 10 років до основних подій мальопису і судячи з усього, саме з неї ми зрозуміємо що сталося з планетою, куди поділися люди і чому тварини стали такими як є.
Загалом мальована історія мені сподобалася, історія цікава, атмосфера постапка передана годно, персонажі різноманітні та харизматичні, тож мені цікаво що буде далі.
Сторітелінг достатньо логічний та послідовний, перша збірка вводить в курс справ, знайомить з персонажами та розстановкою сил.
Головні та другорядні персонажі непогано прописані, читачеві зрозуміла мотивація і до деяких навіть встигаєш проникнутися симпатією чи навпаки.

It was hard to understand what was going on when I was reading the single issues out of order, or missing issues, but I finally got to read it all in one sitting with the Kickstarter exclusive hardcover of volume one.
It's good stuff. Dark, gritty, gory, political... There's betrayal, loyalty, survival, and suspense. Not what you'd expect from a stunningly illustrated graphic novel about animals, right?
I still find it a bit of a struggle to remember which character is who, and who belongs to which clan (what with their intertwining backstories), but it's worth the read.
Highly recommended to anyone who doesn't mind gore on their animal characters, and who enjoy Redwall, Game Of Thrones, or The Walking Dead.

Відверта та жорстока постапокаліптична казка про тварин, які після невідомої катастрофи стрімко еволюціонували та почали боротися за виживання на трохи іншому рівні, ніж зазвичай.
Тварини спілкуються між собою, об’єднуються у міжвидові клани, плетуть інтриги та воюють. Іх інколи важко розрізняти, але намальовані вони чудово.
Сюжет крутиться навколо того, що клану, який вирішив піти мирним шляхом, всіляко загрожують, а виживати все ж треба, навіть йдучи на неприємні компроміси.
Літяга з луком - це імба!
Так, якщо винести історію за казковий жанр, то виникне дуже багато цікавих питань… Тому я оцінюю цей комікс саме як казку.

I rate this 3.5 stars. The story looks cool but I need to see more of it. The idea behind it is simply awesome and very complex, but I felt that the book focused more in the imagery than in speech or narrative and, because of that, it didn't go much deep in the plot, leaving important questions unanswered. I hope that they start fixing that in the next volume "Summer" (I guess). The art is amazing, a real eye candy.

A squirrel version, sort of, of" Watership Down". After all the humans disappear, squirrels and some other animals become intelligent. At first it is a squirrel eat squirrel world. But one squirrel wants to live in peace with not only other squirrels, but other animals as well. Lots of gore in this comic book. The art work is full of blood and gore as squirrel battle each other and fall victim to their natural enemies.
The book is printed on heavy glossy paper and the color illustrations are well done.

Все-таки графічні романи з оригінальним сюжетом дуже виграють у битві з сиквелами/приквелами/новелізаціями ігор.
Шикарні малюнки, цілісні персонажі. Нагадало дещо книжки, що я читала в дитинстві: серію Редвол Браяна Джейкса, де теж всілякі гризуни і дрібні хижаки бились одне з одним. Тільки тут - постапокаліпсис і багацько кровищі. Також не ясно, куди ділись люди, "творці", а куди приведе сюжетна лінія з минулого з людьми. Загалом, задоволена, чекатиму продовження!

мальовка що місцями чіпає за почуття
миленькі білочки і мишки жоско криваво пиздяться з іншими білочками і котами тощо
історія в стилі Гри престолів, але відчувається що їй потрібно бути як мінімум вдвічі довше
проте особисто мені, напевно через оригінальність у вигляді милих гризунчиків, було таки цікаво розбиратись хто кому брат , які жахи вони пережили і хто кого зрадить

More than what I expected.
Up from the start this graphic novel had been playing and creating a perfect setting for the ending to come.
Although the art is magnificent and the animal anatomy is perfectly executed, the one star less is because of the colouring. The dark settings make very difficult to recognize which character is witch, since the clothing they wear looks all the same. There aren't enough specific details to recognize one squirrel from another and sometimes even the weapons the squirrels hold are hard to identify as they look like part of their hands.
I can hardly wait to see the second volume.

When I saw this volume facing out on a Powell's display, the first thing that came to my mind was, "Redwall for adults!" And then it was so much more.
In this first volume, it is not yet revealed what happened to the human race, however the flashback sections gripped me. It leaves you with an ominous feeling. The decision to show what eventually happened to the human race rather than just telling us is, I believe, a great decision. It creates an extra air of mystery without taking away from the main plot. I have always been a fan of this type of storytelling, and this graphic novel does it very well.
As far as the main plot, we are thrown into the middle of a time of turmoil for these creatures. Clans begin to clash as old friends betray one another and families are torn apart by illness and death. Rather quickly, we become attached to these creatures. I'm quite partial to Tree Jump and Eli. Mazcko and Witter do such a fantastic job humanizing these creatures that you sometimes forget that they aren't human.The story and dialogue are incredibly well-written. Each character has their own distinct personality which makes it easy to connect and empathize with them. Mazcko expertly balances necessary exposition with dialogue that allows us a basic understanding of past events. We are not bombarded with information, and because of this, we are able to learn what we need to know when we need to know it instead of all at once. It makes for an easier and more enticing read.
Not only does the writing do a magnificent job of this, but the art as well. Ashley Witter is an incredible artist. In fact, her artwork was the deciding factor for me when I was debating buying this book. I sometimes find myself just admiring the art and one of my favorite things about writing this review is having an excuse to do so. It is seriously stunning. Witter's art amplifies the story and the characters in her attention to detail. Through posture and facial features, Witter gives these characters that Mazcko has created, life. Meo crying out at the end of "Fragile" broke my freaking heart, and this is greatly do to the incredible Ashley Witter.
Ash Maczko and Ashley Witter make an amazing team. With Maczko's considerable skill as a writer combined with Witter's beautiful and often heart-wrenching artwork, Squarriors is a must read. I don't give perfect scores lightly, but this first volume has definitely earned it.

Nádherně kreslený epos i chytrých zvířátkách, které poslední dobou provází nepřízeň osudu. Po umělecké stránce vybroušené, krásné zpracování bublin, chytré panelování.
Scénář si bohužel ukousl krapet větší sousto, než nakonec dokázal spolknout. Přehršel podobně vypadajících postav, ze kterých si čtenář nakonec zapamatuje asi jen ty nejvíce trčící (lišák Eli, vůdce King, rozšafný Cheeks, mrtvý zvěd Pasha), zatímco u ostatních tak nějak tajně doufá, že si je vezme Zimní nemoc, aby košatý strom postav trochu prořídl.
Silný začátek je bohužel docela utopen v antikataklyzmatickém konci, který na mě žádný silný dojem nezanechal. Flashbacky do osmdesátých let mě taky moc nezaujaly, protože čtenář se nejspíš bude těšit na mnohem zajímavější veverčáky.

As a result of a cataclysmic even that left humans extict, some animals gained human-like intelligence. Unfortunately, they gained the human need to conquer and rule as well. Even more unfortunately, I can barely tell the badgers, squirrels, rabbits and rats apart. Cats and foxes are easier, but it's still a large cast for my volatile memory. Don't get me wrong, the comic looks great. You won't see Bugs Bunny-like artwork - in fact, it's quite realistic. But it's exactly that which makes it hard for me to tell characters apart and, thus, I'm unable to tell what's going on. I hoped the story would be enough to get me to read the second volume, but not being able to tell the good characters from the bad is a blocker.

I don't want to criticise this too harshly as for an indie comic it's well-made and I can see why a lot of people seem to like it (including my cousin, who recommended it to me). The artwork is nice and I get the sense that a lot of thought has gone into the story and lore.
Sadly though, I spent the entire thing in a state of confusion because I could hardly tell one character from the next, so I only ever had a very general sense of what was going on and didn't feel connected to any of the characters.
If you don't think this will be an issue for you, or you're willing to put the effort into remembering who's who (or regularly checking the family tree thingy at the back of the book) you may well enjoy it but it just wasn't for me.

Another from the Coronavirus gift box...
This one just didn't do a whole lot for me. The art was really well done, I will say that. And I think the overarching plot is interesting.
But for me, it just felt like a gorier version of mouse guard. The gore level was really high and that wasn't a plus for me personally. A bigger problem I had is that it was really hard for me to keep track of characters (which makes it difficult to care about them) and none of them seemed to have many distinguishing character traits.
Not a horrible read by any means, but not a story I am in a hurry to see more of.

This comic caught my eye it seemed like an interesting premise of some apocalyptic event happens and the animals take over. Also the idea is the animals are smarter than before maybe but unclear if they have always been like this. It keeps flashing to some humans in the 80's while the story takes place in the 90's so not sure yet what the connection is. I assume to give an understanding of how the world is the way it is.
Overall so far this is a really good series so far but is pretty brutal and I imagine a lot more characters will die in the mean time. Also the twist with Eli and Rustle was pretty good.

Перше, що мене привабило у цьому графічному романі це, звичай но ж, білки. (П.С.: Я на стільки їх люблю, що ганялася за цим графічним романом пів року).
Як поціновувачка триллерів, не можу не відмітити чудову мальовку та роботу команди видавництва. Ідеально передана кольорами похмура атмосфера.
Історія доволі жорстока, постапокаліптична про тварин, котрі змогли вижити після зникнення людства, та почали формувати свої клани. Про їх боротьбу за виживання у такому світі та боротьбу між собою.
Історія закінчилася деякого роду кліфхенгером. Дуже цікаво, що ж буде далі, у 2 томі.
Як поціновувачка триллерів, не можу не відмітити чудову мальовку та роботу команди видавництва. Ідеально передана кольорами похмура атмосфера.

Ignore the stars - I really liked this. It took me years to track down a copy which isn’t a great sign but once I had it the art was spectacular in a totally singular way.
However. Art aside, the story was compelling but told in a confusing way which required careful attention to the script and even closer attention to which of nearly identical characters are speaking. I can see attempts to remedy this and believe in volume two it will only be better.

Мабуть я не дочитав. Бо десь всередині книжки я взагалі перестав розуміти хто є хто. 20+ персонажів, які на одну морду (нехай пробачать мені миші і білки). І що ускладнює це те що в кожному клані є всі - і миші, і білки, і зайці і лисиці. В якийсь моменти задовбався перегортати кожний фрейм всі сторінки на початок щоб ідентифікувати гризуна який в цей момент говорив/бився/відповідав. Щиро заздрю авторам, які могли це все е лише придумати а й втримати у памʼяті.

Try to imagine a bloodier Secret of Nimh, or a slightly more gruesome Watership Down. The very realistic artwork in this book is something to be hold, although the storytelling can feel a little less even. That said, if you're into this animal political fantasy genre, it's not bad, despite the silly title. It also has a more present human element in the story, unlike others of its niche.

Білки-вояки - це прям мощь. Кровіща, милі тваринки, цікавий сюжет, інтрига з вимиранням людства, все тримає. З відвертих недоліків це подібність тварин: око не дуже встигає звикнути до того як розрізняти їх всіх. Також трохи забагато персонажів, як на такий малий обсяг. Але загалом ці мінуси цілком можна терпіти, бо історія і малюнок тащать.

Дуже реалістична та жорстока постапокаліптична історія про світ, де зникли люди, але тварини здобули здатність до мислення та говоріння. Ну й звичайно ці тварини розділились на клани та воюють між собою за ті цінності, що вважають істинно вірними. Мені сподобалась концепція, адже протагоністи за цінність сприймають рівність та інтелект й прагнуть рівного для всіх суспільства. Воюють же з тими, хто за цінність сприймають право сильного. Цікаво. І ще великим плюсом є детальна промальовка й абсолютно шикарні батальні сцени.

The art is stunning! Much more violent than I expected, but made sense for the type of story that is being told. I had a hard time keeping track of who was who, since many of the animals look the same. Looking forward to the next volume.

I was excited to read this when I found out about it. I just finished it and oh my god I want more. The art is amazing and the story is so sad. The creative team gave such life to these characters it's amazing. I highly recommend this GN.
