My passion and a common theme in my writing is my Icelandic heritage. I started with children's books and folklore, but now focus on women's fiction. But, I enjoy adding a little taste of Iceland in my contemporary novels - if you mention one in a review, that's not a spoiler!
I spent thirty years in the telecommunications industry, which was rewarding and challenging, and had a thread of writing. When my father passed away in 2015, I reassessed my priorities, opted for early retirement, and indulged my passion for writing.
After several children’s folklore books honoring my mother’s Icelandic heritage, I took on a greater challenge. My first novel, was set in the contemporary American west, blending together some of my favorite things - Iceland, rodeo, hiking, and understanding the value of true friends. I still attend many Scandinavian festivals, have speaking engagements on a number of topics, and, of course, adventures travel, but my true passion now is literary fiction. I focus primarily on mature women's fiction with elements of clean romance. My newest book is Reins of Friendship, a novella prequel to my new series Life's A Rodeo.
I am a snowbird, living in South Dakota during the summer and Arizona during the winter, migrating with my husband, our four horses and three dogs. His passion for team roping and my love of rodeo have carried over into my novels, in what I hope is an interesting and unique experience for readers.
This splendid book is a concerto on aging, featuring the Icelandic virtuoso on living, Íeda Jónasdóttir Herman. The book in short: Keep Moving. Keep Doing. Keep Living.
The chapters are small bites on the philosophy of forging ahead; each chapter includes specific challenges and opportunities with a wealth of websites to explore. This is a life strategy I fully embrace in principle, but often set aside in practice. Because, well, reading books at home is my default.
This is not a book on how to live longer (lifespan); it focuses on how to live fuller (healthspan). On with the Butter! is an Icelandic expression whose meanings include Carry on!, Keep doing what you're doing!, and Keep moving!
I especially took to heart the chapter on Being Bold. Herman suggests starting small. I would add, start young. Make a habit in the morning and afternoon of life of setting aside fears, expanding your comfort zone, engaging in others, and it will be a natural to act that way in life's evening.
Boldness isn't necessarily courageous or heroic. It's a willingness to act with confidence or take a risk. It's confronting fear or insecurity and not allowing it to limit our life experience.
My calendar recently declared me 63. After reading this book, I am designating a journal to record 63 new experiences (on the list: making knot rolls for Thanksgiving). Heidi's mom, Íeda, committed to trying 93 new experiences in her 93rd year. The things varied from trying kohlrabi to riding a trolley to playing laser tag. I love her active approach, her curiosity, and her initiative. This is not a lonely woman sitting in front of daytime television.
I have my own personal On With the Butter! Hall of Fame, exemplars who show me how it's done:
• My dear friend from South Africa, Virginia, who turned 100 this year. I can hear her voice on the telephone saying, "Don't ever tell me to slow down," and "Go out and look for someone to help."
• My octogenarian neighbor Barb, who comes out on mornings after a snow storm and starts shoveling her driveway. (The neighbors try to beat her to it, with varying success.)
• My friend Kimberlee, who at 65 sold her home and bought a mammoth RV to drive around the country. Props to Kimberlee!
• The woman I read about in my previous book, "fourscore" in age, who crossed the Atlantic on a ship in 1623. Whaaaaat????!! Eighty years old and moving to a new location in an unknown country?
• My late Aunt Jennie (sob) who made a piano CD of Christmas Carols when she was 93.
• My sister Dorothy in her seventies, who organizes and cooks for her kids and grands for a week so they can enjoy a vacation in the Wisconsin North Woods.
• My sister-in-law Karyl Lynn, who bought a drum set, learned to drum, and joined a band after she turned 60.
• My sister-in-law Kathie, who took a solo trip to Ireland in her sixties to explore her heritage. Solo trips in foreign countries scare the wits out of me!
• My sister-in-law Valerie, who welcomes friends and strangers from every socioeconomic strata into her home for beautifully prepared meals. Who looks superstar musicians in the eye at parties and talks to them like they are real people.
I'm reluctant to add this last point; but, here it is. This is the *perfect* bathroom book. If you ever need to be distracted from issues and edified at the same time, this is your baby.
I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of Heidi Herman' book On with the Butter! As a 60+ woman who works with women to help them embrace life after 50, I found myself nodding in agreement as I read Heidi's thoughts and ideas for staying active in retirement. I loved her personal stories and experiences she shared with her Mum who has a wonderful view of living life. I found the book entertaining and very informative. I also enjoyed having a summary at the end of each chapter.
I was probably not the perfect audience for this well written introduction to maximizing retirement, as I had already “graduated” a year or so ago. However it may contain some valuable suggestions to those heading towards this major change in their lives. It’s very easy reading, and I enjoyed both the references to the author’s Mother’s experiences, but also to their Icelandic heritage which I admit I knew little about. Many of the suggestions will appear self evident to most readers, but there are often small nuggets or “aha” moments that will make this worth your while. For example, I’ve been looking for volunteer opportunities where I can best contribute, but really didn’t have much of a starting point. The author offered a plethora of national websites that contain valuable info and suggestions. I admit I was exhausted reading her 94 year old mom’s exploits, but if she can embrace her later years with such gusto, I hope I will be able to as well. One caveat to share: some suggestions aren’t practical during our current pandemic guidelines. But if you read it with an eye towards “this is something I can embrace when things return to a new normalcy” then you will get more out of it. Thanks for the book copy in exchange for my honest review.
On With the Butter! Spread More Living onto Everyday Life By Heidi Herman 5 out of 5 stars
I enjoyed reading the book On With the Butter! Spread More Living onto Everyday Life by Heidi Herman. It is a wonderful book that helps you to look at life in different ways. In it are personal experiences of both the author and family that are inspirational and a joy to read about. The book challenged me and my way of thinking about life and how l live it. I enjoyed the quotes that the author put at the beginning of the chapters as well as the lists of ways to implement changes that each chapter talked about. I normally don’t read a lot of self-help books however the way that that the book is written had me feeling like I was talking to a friend who wants to share the joys of how the information has assisted her and how it can help me. Don’t miss out on an amazing book that will keep your interest until the final page. I know I can’t wait to try the examples provided within the book. I would highly recommend reading it.
I received a pre-release copy from the publisher and I've really been enjoying it. Heidi gives us a lot to think about, but most importantly, she gives us homework in the form of "challenges".
A few of the challenges can't be completed today in August of 2020 due to COVID, but that is the world we are living in today. Heidi says, "Just Say Yes". Don't worry about what isn't available, do what you can do, and Heidi gave me plenty to think about.
This book brightened my day, week, and month, because I've been savoring it slowly.
As the host of the Rock Your Retirement show, I've been podcasting about a lot of the subjects Heidi discusses since 2016.
Her lighthearted approach was a joy to read, and I'm sure I'll re-read this book again.
If you would like to enjoy life more, whether retiring or working, get a copy of this book and work through the challenges.
I love this book. I found it inspirational and fun. Reminded me that when we get back to "normal" I have lots to do! Gave me hope and allowed me to look forward to the future. On with the butter!!
On With The Butter! Spread More Living onto Everyday Life by Heidi Herman Five Stars
On With The Butter is an inspirational / self help bookby Heidi Herman. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Herman, but I’m going to be checking a few more out in the near future.
This book actually got me thinking and may change my life, if I can stick to some of Ms. Herman’s philosophies. Last year, I was diagnosed with cancer. I went through the treatment and am now cancer free for about nine months. However, the treatments weren’t so friendly with my body. I was thinking a lot this past month about being fifty three years old and unable to move around like I used to even two years ago. My life consists mostly of working 10-12 hour days coming home watching tv and sleeping. With the pandemic, my husband and I don’t even go out to dinner anymore. I was thinking the other day, I need to make so e changes, and reading this book gave me some great ideas. I’m not an outdoor person, but the hobbies and book club ideas sound wonderful. Trying something new sounds like a breath of fresh air.
Thank you Ms. Herman for giving me all of these new ideas to enhance my life. I’m ready to change my focus from all work and no play to finding things I enjoy and indulging myself. Life is too short to continually be weighed down by the daily grind. I look forward to putting some of you lists to good use. This is an excellent guide to make a happier me. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.
Inspired by her mother's resilience and sense of adventure, Heidi Herman has written On with the Butter: Spread More Living into Everyday Life. (2020, Hekla Publishing).
The gist of the book can be summed up in an Icelandic saying that translates roughly to "On with the Butter!" It's similar to the British saying, "Carry on," but contains a bit more zest, particularly as embodied by Herman's Icelandic mother.
Disclosure: I have received a complimentary copy of Herman's book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Heidi has a long career as a writer of various genres, but this book was part of a collaboration with her mother to enumerate nearly one hundred activities that can help older adults remain engaged and joyful.
The book, however, is not just a list. It conveys an outlook on life that is an invitation to find happiness in the moment rather than being bogged down with one of life's many challenges.
Even though I am many years younger than Ieda, the author's mother, I appreciate the suggestions for engaging in life when some people might suffer depression due to role loss and struggle with how to re-engage in life.
I still teach classes at two universities; however, I experienced a slump when all of my children launched in August of 2019. True, I only have two children, but having them both fire me as their mother was quite a shock.
Instead of looking back at what is missing, I am inspired to engage more fully in the moment by reading narratives about Iada's adventures followed by checklists for having an adventure of my own. For example, in Chapter 5, "Take the Scenic Route," Herman describes a road trip she and her mother took through some of the smaller roads that connect I-80 and I-25. In doing so, Ieda convinced her daughter to stop at the Mormon Handcart Museum that documented the 1,300 mile trip of handcart pioneers.

This is a wonderful book, inspired by the Icelandic phrase "On with the butter", which is to carry on with your life. A great message when you are depressed, grieving or suffering isolation during the Co-vid 19 times.
The author is not asking us to make enormous changes, only little simple things that help you enjpy amd share life.
I loved reading about her and her mother both and was remnded of my own mother. As an example, you are planning a short trip and instead of whizzing through the town, passing by the little parks, historical markers and stores. Take some time out to make discoveries! I remember that on a trip to a nature preserve, we stopped to explore a store that sold local nuts. The store had everything you could image to do with nuts-nut lore, nut cookbooks, nut decorations. We had a wonderful time in that very unique store. Nothing in the guides in that area, we would missed a whole lot of fun if we had stopped.
The book is full of fun challenges and almost dare to try new foods, music and dance. I think it would make a great for a id or a relative. I received a paperback copy of the book from the author after a win in a LibraryThing contest.
I enjoyed this nonfiction book about life, the living, doing and moving. This book has a few stories about how to do this plus it also gives you steps for you to follow. I found this book easy to follow and read. It gives practical ideas for you to change your life and still keep the social distance. I loved the title of this book as it makes sense with what this book will do for your life. I know that I will be trying a few suggested ideas. It is geared more towards retirement age but I think it would be good for anyone who is looking to be inspired, motivated. I highly recommend this book to help you improve your life.
I was given this book to read as I'm in the relevant age group and time of life. It was very interesting and informative. Easy to read with lots of suggested challenges at the end of each chapter. Some of can't be done at the moment due to COVID-19 restrictions but the ideas are great. I enjoyed hearing about Heidi's 94 year old mother who definitely led by example. The Iceland connection was also very interesting and the title certainly caught my attention. I didn't realise it was an Icelandic saying and thought it was very appropriate for the book's subject matter. Much of the book is US based but it still translates OK into Australian, just some of the travelling stories probably would mean more to Americans than Aussies, but that's to be expected. The chapters were broken up well into good sized and relevant chunks. All in all an easy, informative and thoroughly enjoyable read for those within this stage of life or approaching it in the next few years. Highly recommended.
Retirees often search for a purpose in retirement. I retired with expectations of doing everything I wanted to do but could not do because of work and home responsibilities. I soon found that retirement needed some structure and focus, something I only thought applied to my working days.
“…At any point, who we are as a person and how we think is based on the total of our experiences….” -H.H.
Heidi Herman puts forth a variety of thought-provoking ways to make retired days fuller and purposeful. I liked her thoughts on breaking out of the walls we have all lived within for our whole life. Each chapter focused on a way to achieve this goal with some simple examples of breaking down those walls.
The book was a good read for me at this time in my life. I have three takeaways on improving my retired days: be more spontaneous, stretch myself whenever I can, and learn something new as often as I can. I look forward to doing 67 new and challenging things in my 67th year on this earth.
Retirees and soon-to-be retirees will find this book useful in putting their retirement in focus. My favorite sentences from the book say it all for me.
“Spend some time thinking about what makes you smile, what makes you feel good. What makes you feel alive? Whatever your answer is, make it a part of every day.”
As a psychologist, I find myself advising seniors about staying productive and active, especially post retirement. Heidi's new book offers a much-needed collection of recommendations and strategies on how to do this. More importantly, it provides direction on keeping our later years meaningful and purposeful, so important to living longer.
I've been reading a lot of retirement books lately and this one offers some of the same advice but it also offers something different. The author focuses the story around her mother, who was active until her death at 94, and integrates her Icelandic philosophy "On with the butter" (or "carry on") in personal anecdotes throughout the book so that we can see how her mother applied these ideas in her own life, which is the interesting angle here.
The author divides the book into several chapters, such as saying yes to new experiences, continuing to educate yourself, becoming a tourist in your own hometown, exploring nature more, etc. I liked the challenges at the end of each chapter, with a list of activities or achievements that readers could try in their own lives.
The writing style is a bit simplistic, conversational, as if the author is sitting at a table, chatting with you. I think it's the kind of book that one comes back to, as the need arises, to get new ideas on how to remain physically and intellectually active in retirement life.
This is a happy, lively book that's perfect for challenging times. Intended for Boomers and retirees, it shares some charming stories about and wisdom from the author's 94-year old mother who had a great attitude toward life. Every chapter offers a checklist chock full of easy-to-follow ideas to take action and break out of the sameness mold. The ideas range from little to big, obvious to not-so-obvious, but they are always positive and inspiring. A very enjoyable read.
“We’ve all heard the popular expression YOLO—you only live once. We’re reminded to take advantage of the days we’re given, but how exactly do we do that? Some people focus on finding happiness, and while that’s not a bad idea, the definition of happiness is different for everyone, so we have to figure out what makes us happy. To do that, we need to experience life in all its glory—the exciting and the mundane, the good and the bad, the happy and the sad. The search might lead to peace and contentment, purposefulness, action and excitement, higher knowledge, or caretaking. We all seek these things to one degree or another, but there’s often one desire that becomes the primary focus. Before retirement, that focus is often our job or career. But after we retire, we discover that life changes and our primary focus seems to disappear. And that’s when the exploration begins again. That’s when we find new things that challenge us or just make us smile. As we get older, it’s easy to become consumed with our health and taking care of ourselves. We may change our diet, take prescriptions to treat medical conditions, and focus more on physical fitness. But while we’re working so hard to increase our life span, what are we doing to appreciate and make the most of that time? Those are the questions On with the Butter invites us to entertain.”
On With the Butter!: Spread More Living Into Everyday Life by Heidi Herman is in essence a self help guide full of useful tips and insights to living everyday to the fullest- especially for those who have reached retirement age. Full of wonderful anecdotes, personal thoughts/stories/and experiences- this book aims to inspire you with lots of ideas, challenges and activities- and also provides a list of resources to help you along the way. This was not only entertaining, but also thought-provoking, informative, educational, relatable, easy to read and understand, genuine, and interesting. It encourages the reader to embrace the thought of trying new things, stepping outside your comfort one, and challenging yourself- you may just find that these suggestions bring a little fun and purpose into your world, and enhance your life in the process. With each chapter focusing on a particular topic- there is plenty of ‘food-for-thought’ here. So, what are you waiting for- grab a copy and…. On With The Butter!
On With the Butter! is an uplifting book by Heidi Herman. It is aimed at retired people, but readers of all ages can benefit from the advice and inspiration Herman shares. Drawing on Icelandic philosophies, via Herman’s amazing mother (the anecdotes from her life are at times almost unbelievable and always entertaining!), we are encouraged to live life to the fullest. I approached this book in part out of professional interest, as my field of Community Arts often involves working with older people. It was good to see that, while Herman’s tone throughout the book was light and conversational, it was backed up with academic sources. It’s great to see someone advocating for older people engaging in all kinds of activity, and Herman gives plenty of practical advice on how to encounter different experiences. With COVID-19 currently limiting the activities available to us, and particularly more vulnerable elderly people and those with underlying health conditions, many of the activities Herman suggests are not currently safe. In spite of that, I think this book could be more valuable than ever. Herman includes many suggestions of activities that can be done from the home, or in safer outdoor spaces. It would be a great resource for someone who feels like they have exhausted the possibilities of their restricted world. Additionally, reading about Herman and her mother’s adventures provides a much-needed burst of escapism! For me, this is a five-star book. I would recommend it to anyone who feels bored and cooped up! It reminded me of a book I had as a child – Something to do. Whenever I was bored, I would open it up and get an idea for an exciting project to embark on. I can see On With the Butter becoming a similarly useful resource!
Heidi Herman gives you a glimpse into the Icelandic life and the history of the saying “On with the butter!” Although this book is geared towards those who are retired or on the brink of retiring and looking to prepare for it better, I found it to be really helpful as well.
The book starts with an introduction to Heidi and how she learned about this saying and what it means to her and how it has impacted her life. The explanation is detailed, as is the description of what life can be like when this saying hasn’t been introduced into it.
The format is one that I have not seen used in such an effective way before, each chapter deals with a different aspect of life, there are her thoughts on it, a few anecdotes from her personal experiences and then there is a challenge to go along with it.
This book is a great read if you're looking for inspiration on how to get the best out of life, giving the little kick needed to try out new things and why it is so important to keep your zest and enjoyment of life present at all times.
So take a chance to discover what it could be like to get on with life and “Spread more Living onto Everyday Life” by saying “On With The Butter” as well!
This was an interesting read for me. I will be the first to admit I normally don’t go for the non-fiction reads or self-help books quite as much as I probably should. This one came to me in a time I needed the quotes and words of encouragement as I read. This is always a thing that I enjoy with fiction novels so that was a nice plus for sure and kept me engaged as I worked my way through the chapters. This will make you look at life in different ways and discover some pointers to help with those difficult and positive moments we all experience as we traverse this thing called life without a handbook. I would be interested to see what else and if maybe it is geared to a younger audience that Heidi Herman has available. I am a fan for sure of the way she approaches thinking and difficult topics so I would be interested in seeing what other thoughts she may have. This is one for a rainy Sunday when you just need some positivity and a leg up!
When I first started reading it, I thought most of the ideas were common-sense, known to all. ("Exercise is good for you.") To some extent, that's true. But there are two things that set this book apart. For one thing, the author uses her elderly mother (in her 90s when book was written) as a sterling example of a person who gets the most out of life. The joy and admiration Herman has for Mom is a bright point of this work. The second thing that sets this book apart is the presence of the checklists within and at the end of each chapter. I almost feel like buying the paperback version to give me ideas for when I'm ever bored or lonely. It's a wealth of suggestions, and the resources are really helpful, too. For example, did you know there are local chapters of the Audubon Society all around the country that you can join? Heidi Herman has gathered up a ton of everyday wisdom and placed it within easy reach. A fine resource.
Thank you very much Book Publicity Services and Heidi Herman for my print copy of On with the Butter, which made for very enjoyable reading.
This book gives so many great ideas for adding enrichment to your life. It encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and try new adventures.
We decided to retire early, my husband was just 40, as we wanted to do many things that we may not be able to physically do later in life. We spent 6 wonderful years exploring the USA and experienced life to the full.
This is exactly what the book encourages you to do. There are so many things to see, explore and enjoy if you just search.
The book is uplifting and inspiring and definitely makes you want to get up and start your new adventures. So many great ideas and you will be surprised how much more fulfilling your life can be.
I fell in love with this nifty little book when I read the chapter headings like 'Planned Spontaneity." At first I was a little alarmed by the daring and wild things the author and her 93 year old mother did and said to myself, "wow! I can't do these things,"" but then I saw that there was something for everybody in the book. For example, learning a new language is something anybody can do either as a social activity or online from home. Before "Staycation" became a buzz word with the Corona virus the author has mentioned "Hometown Tourism." On reading the book I have decided to keep moving, keep doing and keep living. I can tick off one challenge from the lists of the challenges at the end of each chapter and take it from there. If you are a senior, going to be a senior, or know somebody who is going to be a senior this is the book to have.
On With The Butter: Spread More Living onto Everyday Life by Heidi Herman. I’m not a huge non-fiction fan and not to keen on a self help type book, but I’ll be honest this year has me changing a lot of my ways. I was definitely pleasantly surprised how much I liked this book and I mean that in the nicest way, it’s of no fault of the author that this isn’t my normal read so I’m glad to say this book definitely had this wonderful way of keeping me turning the pages. I felt an encouragement throughout the entire book and I definitely could use all the encouragement I can get theses days. It’s got quotes I’ll carry with me for sure and appreciate that. Which it’s not my usual reading I’m glad I found it and gave it a try. Four stars and highly recommended!
I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of Heidi Herman' book On with the Butter. It's a great book to use to help you explore things to do when you are retired,,, or even before,,, to get more enjoyment out of life. I really liked her personal stories in each chapter, especially the ones with her Mom. I also liked the summary at the end of each chapter and the references for links where you can go to find out more information.
I will definitely be re-reading the chapter on volunteering, and want to try out some of the other ideas once this pandemic is over, and we can really get out again!! That was my only gripe right now; there are so many things we can't do until the virus is under control.
5 Star On With the Butter! Spread More Living onto Everyday Life by Heidi Herman
On With the Butter! Spread More Living into Everyday Life by Heidi Herman is simply Brilliant! This is a inspirational book about living life to the fullest. I absolutely devoured this book. I found myself saying out loud, “ I’m doing that now" or “ oh that’s a brilliant idea.” I literally read this in one sitting. I’m not normally one to read these types of self help books, but im glad I picked this one up. I just want to say although this may be targeted more towards retirement age I think everyone of any age can benefit from reading this book. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more from this Author
On With the Butter! Spread More Living onto Everyday Life by Heidi Herman. I loved this book. It was perfect for the time especially with COVID going on and life being so ful of what ifs. Living life to the fullest has different meanings for different people but each person needs to find out what that is. As I get older I realize that a lot of my time is focused on my health and what problems I have. This book tells us we need to look at the happiness and not focus on the negative all the time! Instead of focusing on the negative get out and enjoy life. This book is full of ideas to get out and have fun. Full of activities, games and personal stories this book helps you realize that life is not all work and hardships. Make the most of out every moment and live life to the fullest!
This is a book full of ideas to change your outlook on life and find ways to make it fulfilling, especially for those that are ready to retire. I am not quite in that category but I enjoyed reading this book. I especially loved the quotes the author added to each chapter that gave you a sense of what the chapter is about. The examples and ideas the author shares are written to make you feel like “Hey, I could do that with my friend...” or “I can see my daughter and I having that kind of fun!” I would suggest this to friends and family as a good suggestion to add life to your years at any age.
Throughout this uplifting book, Heidi has shown an exuberance and vitality to be "On With the Butter." She and her role model mother show how to carry on, and continue to boldly explore life in all of its facets. She leads by example, describing the number of adventurous activities that she has done, and how that provides encouragement to the reader to explore new ideas. The book provides encouragement for retirees because they have more time for adventures, but her message is equally applicable to those who are pre-retirement.
The book uses its examples as inspiration. Not only does the reader want to try new activities, but they also have a menu of choices that could apply to them.
On With The Butter by Heidi Herman is a book designed to help you make the most out of life and learn how to adapt your way of thinking. I liked how the author provided helpful suggestions and lists of how to implement what she was talking about. I’m not normally the type of person who will read a “self-help” book however this book I enjoyed. It didn’t feel like the author was lecturing on how you should do things and more regaling us with her own experiences and provided a basis for how we might learn from them and her. It was an interesting book to read and I found myself much more engrossed in the book than I expected. The tone of the book for me was also quite light hearted while also having depth which I think helped me enjoy this book more. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone that wants to challenge their way of thinking.
On With the Butter! by Heidi Herman is informative and thought provoking as it gives some ideas to self-help with retirement and living life to the fullest. Heidi gives us stories from those around her that are inspiring and full of wisdom, I mean just look at her 94 year old mother! She gives us something where activities and strategies can be used and that is purposeful not only for later in life but could be utilised now. It is something that is easy to read and a little fun. If you are at that stage where you are wondering “what comes next” grab a copy and have a read.
