Magic pulses at a low ebb so as not to even be noted by anyone. It provides convenient sources of light, smooth roads, and keeps more dangerous things at bay. Even on the outskirts where craftspeople and farmers make their home, nothing overly wild resides.
Then, Kylie finds herself spirited away from the relative security of her home and life only to be plunged into a wild world of darkness, betrayal, and magical creatures. She struggles against a destiny being thrust upon her. She must find her way, which includes discovering who she can trust in the wild dark wood, a wild dark wood filled with Big Beasts.

This is an imaginative, and in many ways quite unusual fantasy. It's much more subtle than other books I've read in this genre (although that isn't a bad thing). If you're looking for a change of pace from epic wars and action-packed quests, or want something slow-burn that puts a lot of emphasis on mystery then Big Beasts is worth exploring.
The plot very much has a dark fairytale vibe to it. A young girl named Kylie finds her life turning upside-down when she is stolen away from her home and brought to a strange village on the orders of her sinister grandfather. She must unravel the mystery of why he wants her there, and uncover the truth behind dark forces which hold the village in a peculiar grip.
I did enjoy reading this, but since I always do my best to leave honest reviews there was sadly one particular aspect I wasn't so keen on. It felt like maybe a little too much emphasis was placed on mystery-- things in the story seemed very vague at times. Events occur but I was often uncertain of exactly what was happening or why. Explanations and answers are seldom revealed because other characters either don't know or decline to give them for unclear reasons. It was only during the final pages of the book that I felt I had a grasp of an overall plot. But when I did understand I liked the concept.
There were many positive things too. The author has created an intriguing world I'd love to see explored more fully, especially the creatures-- water sprites and the ravine were highlights for me. And without giving away details there was a very impressive twist I didn't see coming at all. I look forward to seeing what's next for Kylie and her friends in book 2
4.5 rounded to 5 stars. A deliciously spooky tale with well-developed characters throughout. I especially loved the inquisitive young heroine, Kylie! Wonderful world-building. A fantastic read! :)
