The Havoc Boys #5

Victory at Prescott High

Rate this book
There's one heart you can’t break at Prescott High, not unless you’re one of them. The Havoc Boys. They’re my family, my redemption, and my future. Victory at Prescott High has always meant escape. Once upon a time, that meant graduation and a one-way ticket out of town. But everything is different now. This year, my life changed in irrevocable ways. The Havoc Boys have a Havoc Girl; they have a queen who wears her crown with pride. I’ll need every ounce of strength I possess to dig us out of an early grave. One last chance; one more fight. If there really are happy endings for people from my side of the tracks, then we’ll find one. Or else we’ll go down together in a hail of gunfire. Blood in, blood out. Always. VICTORY AT PRESCOTT HIGH is a 170,000 word (that's super long!) mature high school/new adult romance with enemies-to-lovers/love-hate themes. It has brief flashbacks of past bullying incidents as well as foul language and sexual scenes; any sex featured is consensual. This is a reverse harem novel, meaning the main character has more than one love interest. This is book five of five in the series.

C.M. Stunich is a self-admitted bibliophile with a love for exotic teas and a whole host of characters who live full time inside the strange, swirling vortex of her thoughts. Some folks might call this crazy, but Caitlin Morgan doesn't mind - especially considering she has to write biographies in the third person. Oh, and half the host of characters in her head are searing hot bad boys with dirty mouths and skillful hands (among other things). If being crazy means hanging out with them everyday, C.M. has decided to have herself committed.

She hates tapioca pudding, loves to binge on cheesy horror movies, and is a slave to many cats. When she's not vacuuming fur off of her couch, C.M. can be found with her nose buried in a book or her eyes glued to a computer screen. She's the author of over thirty novels - romance, new adult, fantasy, and young adult included. Please, come and join her inside her crazy. There's a heck of a lot to do there.

Oh, and Caitlin loves to chat (incessantly), so feel free to e-mail her, send her a Facebook message, or put up smoke signals. She's already looking forward to it.

Ugh...I feel like every time I read one of Stunich’s novels, I have the same pros and cons.

Pros:
* Ridiculously fun, wholly unbelievable, but engaging plotlines
* Hot dudes

Cons:
* Way too much time is spent on odd asides (like, why do we need paragraphs about the plastic straw debates that is supposed to be a character’s inner monologue), excessive time spent explaining concepts and the author’s research, explanation/reinforcement of jokes/zingers to make sure the audience understands how great it was.
* Weird self-referencing. Like, every character is reading one of the author’s other books :/
* Lack of editing. Editing isn’t just about grammar and spelling; it’s about creating and manipulating prose to build a tight story.

In this one, in particular, I had a few complaints about the fact that we are repeatedly told about how far behind Bernie is, how bad her education is, how little she cares about school and reading. Yet, she is continually pulling out older/literary words. Heck, we’ve had five books focusing on an argument with a teacher over ebon vs. ebony. I’m sorry, but you’re telling me a character who never picks up a book, is failing out of a horrible school, is running around talking like a literature professor?

Also, multiple epilogues. Why?

...and I cried.

I did. For these characters. For these kids.

I feel I truly appreciated these characters for what they’re worth, which makes me happy.

What really did me in was Victor’s grandmother’s letter.

I cried.

And I loved this story.
It was messy and ratchet and bloody. And it was beautiful in its own way.

I went back and forth a lot on whether I liked Bernie’s character, and this last book really sold it for me. She’s one of my favorites now. Spoiler ahead: when I thought she had actually died, my heart broke for those boys. THANKFULLY she pulled through. She saved them and herself. Like I said before, she’s ratchet as hell but I respect her.

I’ll gladly admit I was HERE for the Havoc orgies. I’m STILL wondering how she fit two dicks into her hole at once and maybe I’m just inexperienced but like is that possible? I really don’t want to turn to the internet to answer this question so by all means if you can answer that question, boldly drop a comment below. Would I have liked a little MM between Oscar and Callum, or even Callum and Hael, YES. I’m sad we didn’t get that though. Either way, thank you Stunich for packing on the orgies and not losing sight of why WE REALLY READ THESE BOOKS.

Part of me wants to go tattoo HAVOC somewhere on my body.

It was just heartbreaking, OKAY?!
Ugh I don’t even know why I’m so obsessed but it was a beautifully painted picture.

I also want to go buy cigarette pants but like I feel like I can’t pull them off well ya know?

To Oscar, you remain my FUCKING DARK DEITY.
I just caaaaaan’t with him.

Look I know I haven’t gone into much detail but I’m in a book coma okay?
What can I say? I got my HEA so I’m fucking stoked but sad because it’s over.

Somebody convince Stunich to write like a spin-off or something, or something.

Edit: after reading some of the negative reviews I want to point out: yes I see the things that upset y’all in Stunich’s way of writing and I don’t disagree with some of the things that were pointed out. However, for me I chose to look past some of the things that annoyed me and just enjoyed the characters. Would I have liked the 8 epilogues to include a little substantial material, yes. But I got my HEA so that’s all I really needed.

Well... I finally finished the conclusion of the Havoc boys series!! It took me a whopping 8 days to get through it, as life just seems way too busy right now to have anytime to read!

I did enjoy the conclusion, although there were certain things that happened that were so tragic that I wish they hadn’t!
On the whole though, this was a wonderful wrap up to an amazing series!

Too much politics! I read to escape from everything else going on and the constant political opinions inserted into every chapter ruined this series for me. I feel that this author used an opportunity to express her political views through internal monologue rants that didn’t flow with the story. It was almost like she was looking for an opportunity to push her views into every aspect of the story through the main character. I’ve notice in the past few of her books she has does this, but this one is by far the worst! I promise you this, NOBODY CARES which side of politics you support, people just want to read a good romance without all the other bs. This will definitely be the last C.M. Stunich book for me.

Too much politics

I love love CM and her writing style. This books was a wonderful ending to a phenomenal story but I seriously struggled to finish the story. There were several times throughout the story I wanted to stop reading because the politics were just too much. I agree with several other reviewers that I feel that so much of the book was focused on pushing present day politics. I read to escape the real world which I’m sure many other readers do as well and unfortunately this book did the exact opposite.

I definitely support CM’s right to share her thoughts and political views with her readers but just hope in future stories that it doesn’t interfere so much with the story.

okay. what the actual fuck?? how did we go from 4 amazing books.... to this???? I’ve never wanted to finish reading a book so much in my life. Not because it was incredible and i needed to know how it ends. but because i was so bored that i needed it to end before i hit my head into a wall.

first off, did anyone forget that the Havoc crew was from south PRESCOTT???? Because i sure as fuck didn’t with how many times we were reminded. I get that it’s in the title of each book....... but in case you were wondering, ‘Prescott’ is mentioned ~200 times. That’s just excessive.

oh, also can you mention ebon one more time? just one more?

It took everything in me to even get into the first half of the book. then we have the showdown with this one character who Cal was like “this guys dangerous” and okay for Cal to say that.... shits real..... but then the showdown happens... AND JUST KIDDING. I literally blinked and it was over. Oh, okay. Glad that was the only part of the book i was excited for.

I hated how none of the characters had the same voice in this book than they did previously. Cal and Aaron were really the only consistent characters and Aaron was probably the worst out of all of them (i just thought he was boring as fuck). Even Oscar, my love. he grew so much in this series that you expect character change. But i felt like he was someone else completely.

The last 8% of the book was good (sans the multiple pointless epilogues). but a good 8% doesn’t make up for a boring i’m so tired of reading this 92%.

I feel like this book was season 8 of GOT. either you loved it or you hated it. and if you hated it you have a damn good list as to everything that sucked.

Ok so I struggled with this book.

I personally feel this series should have stuck to the 3 planned original books. I feel cm made it into 5 because she could.

Let’s start with what I liked.....
errrrrm
Aaron, Heal and Cal.
The funny moments.
That’s about it.

What I didn’t like.

The fact cm stole a setting from another series of books! Callie rose is the author of the oak valley prep series, there is controversy around this series, but the level of bullying towards this author reaches into this series and to name a character after her, was too much! To degrade and belittle an author like this is wrong on every level!

The constant smoking and drug references, I’m well aware she’s supposed to be a tough bitch or whatever, but seriously! The amount these characters smoke I’m surprised they can breathe let alone run after people perform major martial arts!

The politics of the author making it into the inner monologues of the FMC.

lipstick shades!

There was so much that’s annoyed me it took me days to read it. I devoured the first 3 books, however the last two seemed to really stretch it out. And I skimmed most of this one.
I’m not going to lie it’s put me off reading this author again.

3 stars

Overall I really enjoyed this story. I had 2 issues that made me take off 2 stars. First, Bernadette’s character development. At the end, she truly became a bully. Not just someone righteously seeking vengeance, but an honest to god bully. It was painful to read. My other issue was the author’s constant need to politicize this book. Every other chapter had some unnecessary political statement. It was overdone and too much. It took away from the story instead of adding anything of value.

It's like this series doesn't have an editor. There are soo many unnecessary and pointless scenes. So many repetitive scenes. Even sex scenes that should be really hot from the premise but fall really flat. I am politically like-minded to the main character/author but that doesn't mean I want to be reading a romance novel and get interrupted by political rants (there are several). I cannot understand all the love this series gets, I expected much better and just barely forced myself to finish it. This book is a little bit better than book 4 actually but the entire series overall gets 1.5 * for me and a mental note to never read this author again. I am so glad to be finished with this series.

I absolutely loved the first three books of this series, and waited on baited breath for this book to come out and . . . such crap. Everything from the cheap cover (looks like a sad airbrushed/photoshop hack job), to the storyline. It was all bad.

I absolutely hated all the political pandering and postering. It became old real quick. Literally fought with myself to finish the book, and towards the end I just skimmed it. I could not take one more inner monologue on social and political issues. The entire reason I read books like this is to lose myself in the story, not to be bounced right back into all the messed up poop that is happening in the world today.
Poorly executed final book, and quite frankly soured me on not just this series, but probably won't read any more from this author.

Could've been amazing....

This book should've has 5 stars. I would have gladly given it five stars had it not been dripping in political nonsense. We get enough of that in the real world. I read to get away from the news, politics, and drama that is our world now. Finishing this book was almost impossible. The only reason I did finish it was because I had read the previous 4 and felt like I needed the closure. Such a shame it turned out the way it did

When I got to the last page of this book, I cried! I started this series quite a while ago before Chaos was released, then couldn’t kept reading the books with such big breaks between releases, so waited until it was completed and reread the first two books and then kept on.

If you have got to Victory then you are already in love with these dark and broken characters, you want Bernie’s list complete, you want the GMP destroyed, you want Hael’s dad to suffer and his mum safe, you want Hannah, Kara and Ashley to love all the boys and be back with them, you want Bernie’s mum and Vic’s mum to get what they deserve, and you really wonder why the hell Trinity ever needed to be written, but you can’t wait for Bernie to smack that smug grin off her pompous face and Vic show her who is queen!

CM Stunich answers all of these and more.

Why did it not get 5 stars, well in some areas I found it long winded for me, but I know this author put her heart and soul into this book, you could feel this was more personal than other books she’s written and I respected that she loved every word she wrote and I loved the majority of them.

Even though I love all the boys, Vic and Hael were always my favourites, finding out about Vic’s past brought me to tears and I fell for him even more and Hael wanting to protect everyone and the guilt he carries, I just wanted to hold him and take care of him!

I’ve always said it about this series it’s not for everyone, people might find it repetitive in some aspects, but if you are like me and fall in love was this crazy, cruel, broken, violent world, then you are in for one of the best series you’ll ever read, and don’t be surprised if you laugh out loud quite a few times too, this author is very witty!

Enjoy, I’m jealous of you, even though I know I’ll reread these from time to time, there is nothing like your first time!! ❤️ ❤️

C.M. Stunich is not a very good author. While the story is suspenseful and I found myself wanting to figure it all out, her writing style is repetitive and annoying so I will never read another story of hers. This series could’ve easily been 3 books not 5 wastes of time. The only reason I even finished this god awful story is because of Callum & Oscar. Those 2 helped me finish their tale. Otherwise Bernie is one of the worst MC, I’ve ever read about, it’s very hard to see why these dudes pine over her. I’ve read a bunch of these RH and the female lead needs to have certain qualities that make all these guys accept sharing and Bernie just doesn’t have that it factor. The author tries to play like Bernie is some illiterate dumbass but with her clever schemes, use of ACT words, memorizing Shakespeare and other books, and writing poetry, like come on you can’t have it both ways either she’s smart or she’s not. Also the whole having sex thing and putting a tampon in to keep the mess from.... just nasty. Nothing whatsoever is sexy about that, there’s many more foul things this author thinks will make readers find hot but just no, no, no, Noooooo! Heavy periods, joking about running a train, leather pants with jizz all over them, the list goes on and on just nasty foul complete and utter trash read. I need to read something else ASAP to forget this horrendous authors skills.

Ps only giving it a star because again Cal & O made this story finishable.

I decided to review the series as a whole under book # 5. I was really hoping to enjoy this series but I was having a real hard time not liking Bernie's character whatsoever. I get that she had a rough childhood and her older sister was killed, but I felt that Bernie didn't know how to control her emotions let alone share her emotions. For an almost 18 year old woman, she certainly doesn't act like it. She seems to have an attitude and is very naïve on how life is. When given the opportunity to get a better education going to the Prep School, she makes no effort. She is more concerned of making Trinity jealous and being with her men. She constantly blamed her old school/teachers as the reason that she was behind on her education; yet she graduated with a - C average.

I felt that she had love for all her HAVOC men, but she seemed to have a favorite regardless what you read. It was implied that her childhood love of Aaron gave him special treatment. My favorite character was Callum; he seemed to be the most upfront of the group. Bernie says she is looking out for her sister and wanting to be there, but she makes very little effort in being in her life. She leaves her with a babysitter or Aaron takes care of her. She doesn't cook, let alone provide for her, or making sure she is doing her homework; being a responsible parent is more than what Bernie was doing. Bernie seemed more concerned about getting down with her men or getting her revenge.

She complains constantly about rich people and how they get away with everything with buying people, but that is exactly what HAVOC does. She expects everyone to bow down to her but she can't even earn it; she takes what she wants without consequences. She doesn't judge people out loud but seems to constantly judge everyone else with her thoughts, verbal attacks, and actions. She is constantly talking about rich people and how evil they are, all while doing everything including possible to become one of them. She was continually complaining about the corruption of the school, the government, and all types of law enforcement; but when it was perceived to be against you but the moment you are in a position to take a chance at being the directing force of said corruption you are all for it.

Why oh why all the political stuff ? It was exhausting and completely ruined the characters. I wanted to punch Bernadette I was so sick of the preaching. Do not read fiction books to hear this constantly. So disappointed to finish the series with this book. 😣

How to even start this review! Let me start by saying this series is amazing. I can honestly say I have never read anything like it and it kept me on my toes through the whole series. Every character is absolutely lovable even if you scream at them in certain scene. You just can’t help but love them.

Each of the HAVOC boys and Bernie had a crap childhood and in this book we learn the backstory of each boy. They are each heartbreaking in their own way and each story shows how strong each of these men are.

Bernie and her men have to fight for their school and there town, it’s nothing they have ever had to do. Will they all survive? You’ll have to read this books to find out. Make sure you have tissues and all throwable objects are removed from your immediate vicinity. Also don’t forget to breathe. That was hard for me...to remember to breathe.

That was one hell of an ending! HAVOC sure knows how to deal with and in chaos and come out the other side, as we have read time and again. I sure am gonna miss these characters, they are raw, gritty, full of emotion and passion and willing to do anything to keep their family alive and whole. The twists, turns, drama and full blown action make for one explosive conclusion to the series, throw in all the seriously sexy scenes and you get one hell of a book that you can’t put down! If you haven’t read this series you are seriously missing out, I whole heartedly recommend it!!

Ok, so... I've got contrasting feelings about both this book and especially the series at large. I'll try and make a list of what I liked and what I disliked...if just to understand for myself how I feel about it.

THINGS I LIKED
🔸 The premise, the general bully romance trope (this is my very first one because I always thought I couldn't like them on principle, but I was okay with this particular story)
🔸 Bernie and every single one of her HAVOC boys: Aaron for being boyfriend material, Heal for always smiling through life and always being a sexy fox, Vic for both being tender for Bernie AND a jealous ass**** boss, Callum for being a devil in angel's clothes (I swear I could see those blue eyes spying on me while reading), Oscar for being a hot (and bloody) riddle until he just was a cinnamon roll (but just for Bernie and the little girls).
🔸 The sisters. I loved the tragic backstory of Bernie's big sister, the beginning of everything. But also Heather, Kara and little Ashley... they were pureness and humanity, and very much needed inside all this chaos.
🔸 The strong sense of justice/vengeance against pedophiles and rapers.
🔸 The love story and the brotherhood, in one word the FAMILY.
🔸 The (really sad) backstory of every MC.
🔸 The mothers in general, both the villains and the (almost) sane ones, plus the other women: the teacher and the police officer.
🔸 All the steamy scenes, from the sweet ones to the more hardcore. Thumbs up for me.
🔸 Very good characters and world construction
🔸 The bigger picture of the plot, in the sense that I liked the premise and the ending we finally had in this #5 book.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE
🔸 The messiness of the plot going from book #2 to #4: there were too many things happening at once. Too many deaths, and too many unuseful characters coming, going, dying. Why?! In my humble opinion, the author should have simplified the plot by going through different stages. She could have dealt with Bernie's list first, put an end to this and then go in with the war between gangs and making us discover that Vic's mom was involved at the end. She could have also profited by maybe making more books, but with more organic plots.
🔸 Have I already said too many deaths?! I don't mean this in the sense that I was horrified or something, it was to be expected, but with so many deaths and so many witnesses and the cops being present all the time... How is it possible for them to remain free?!?
🔸 The writing was cringe at times, some descriptions made me "ughhh whaaaat? wtf am I reading?", some made me just laugh when they were meant to be poetic.
🔸 The actual poetry: Bernie was writing poetry at school, and it was cute at first. But then she became serious about the poetry and the poetry became worse and worse.. and maybe as an Italian I don't understand poetry written in another language but it was awful in my experience.
🔸 The writing part 2: some paragraphs were repetitive, things were prolonged or said multiple times in the same way throughout the books (especially #3 and #4 if I remember correctly)... in the end, the books could have been cut off at least 1/3 pages, still maintaining all the steamy scenes (and there were plenty)
🔸 The writing part 3: did someone edit this? Because it didn't seem like it, and it went down and down with repressiveness and errors. It gave me the idea of a self made, weekly published Fanfiction. And I like my good share of Fanfiction, but from a published book I expect something more.

Final though: GOOD IDEA, NOT SO WELL EXECUTED.

Well this was absolutely the most overly drawn out series I may have ever read. I was hesitant to even start this final book as I’ve found the writing and storyline to be solidly deteriorating over the course of the series. Bernie, who started off sassy and strong as hell has become this whiny head case with FAR too many inner monologues. In fact, I bet if all those inner monologues were stripped from this book it’d be like a third of the page count. And seriously the repetition drove me crazy!! If I never read the word “ebon” again I’ll be happy. So anyways with those issues and a whole heap more at least this final book is done. I honestly skimmed a good portion of it because it was obvious from the start it would be light in actual plot like the last two, and as I mentioned with Bernie getting super annoying, me not caring about any of the HAVOC dudes, and a ridiculous amount of inner monologues skimming was the only way I could wade through this thing. As others have commented this author seems to be losing some of the magic that her earlier books held so I think I’m taking a break from CM for awhile. Anybody got any good suggestions??

Okay, so I somehow made it through this series. I would like to thank the snow and the wine that helped me through this. Don't get me wrong, I love this whole HAVOC gang... but the last two books just felt like forever. I kind of wish this stayed as a trilogy but I'm not made at the same time either. Mostly because I got more of everyone.

The drama, bloodshed, and romance were just extra. Sometimes it worked for me and other times I just wanted to roll my eyes. I did, however, like that they were all getting closer and closer together. Also that Bernie finally got some girlfriends who are just as crazy as she is.

In the end, the many many epilogues made me laugh. Especially the whole intimidating thing.

Good Ending

Nice tie up to the series, the ending has me tearing up a little bit. Overall I kept forgetting that basically even though throughout the series Bernadette is 17 she has basically been emancipated. So this entire series centers around her and her guys and how they deal with this world.

I did feel like this book dragged on. There were several jumps into the future, and for a while there I truly thought something terrible had happened. But I kept reading and I like where things end up though I wish we got to see more of Havoc in the future. That would have been nice.

Overall this was a crazy journey with lots of twists and turns.

Disappointing Ending to Series

I seem to be part of the minority group that feels the book fell short. The first book in the series was incredibly strong and set the tone for the subsequent books...which didn’t deliver. As the fifth and final book, I was hoping Victory would redeem its predecessors but it was lackluster. While it was incredibly long, there were long descriptions of things not pertinent to the story line. In contrast, the parts of the book that were being built up to were small side notes instead of being highlighted like they should have been.

Meh.

The plot itself and the events leading up to it were good BUT there was so many details missing in some of the major scenes as they were just skipped over. These were the more important moments which carried on from the beginning of the series so you would think this is where the focus should be, instead it all went into the unnecessary bullshit and the actual ending plus the “after” parts were a little anticlimactic.

Despite the above, I was really liking this series but my god it’s fucking long. There was so much unnecessary content that did nothing but fluff it out causing the actual story to drag. This was 5 books in total, some of them being 400+ pages so it was honestly like reading 6 which is just ridiculous and I know that’s easy to say this when you’re a reader but this easily could have been 3 books…😒
