For Paige Kelly, life hasn’t exactly turned out the way she planned. At twenty-two she thought she would be graduating from college and starting a career. But the loss of her parents changed everything, and instead she spends her days working as a waitress and spends her nights, weekends, and everything in between taking care of her five younger siblings. Now her life is completely focused on her family, and despite the urging of those close to her, she doesn’t find time for a life of her own.
When Russell Pierce returns to his childhood hometown he is eager to focus on success in his new career. Meeting Paige wasn’t part of his plan either, but once he does he can’t stop thinking about her and how he wants to help her. But she can’t let go of her fears, and refuses to allow him to get close.
Will she ever be able to open up and consider a life with anyone? Is she ready to give life a second chance?
This is a sweet story of letting go and trusting that God has a plan for us, even though it will have difficult times or be so different than what we expected. Paige is running the home and taking care of her younger siblings like a single mother while putting her own education and life on hold. She's pretty much given up and focused 100% on work and home, when Russell comes into her life offering a promotion and friendship. I was impressed with how in tune with God Russell is and his sincere desire to follow the promptings he receives. Even though the process of breaking down Paige's walls is bumpy, he is faithful and shows Paige that she doesn't have to go through life alone. While I liked the story and had a pleasant feeling while I read it, there are so many details of the mundane and unnecessary that it bogged down the pace and I found myself skimming. I think without the excess, the meat of the story could be told in a novella.
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
I really liked the plot of this story, the characters, and the emphasis on always trusting the Lord. But the editing was absolutely atrocious, like it wasn't even proofread. There were so many commas that should've been periods that I wanted to pull my hair out! If this book had actually been edited, I would have rated it 4/4.5 stars.
Paige has taken on the role of the primary guardian of her younger siblings after the sudden death of her parents. As a young woman in her early 20's she shouldn't have the responsibilities she does, but she put her priorities aside to take care of her family. There's no time for fun or relationships and she's certain no one else would want to take on the hefty load she endures daily. That is until the new manager at her workplace makes her think differently.
This Christian romance is full of hope and learning to accept help when we least expect it. Watching Paige's faith grow is a true blessing.
*Review of audio version of this story, that is now titled Walk With Me*
This sweet story was very nice to listen to. The narrator had a charming southern accent. The story was clean and definitely one that adults and even young teens could confidently enjoy listening to. Things wrapped up at the very end fairly quickly, in my opinion, but still very enjoyable.
I received a complimentary copy of this audio book. All opinions are my own.
I wanted to like this book, but it moved so slow and I found the characters boring. I have read many Christian books and this is definitely not a favorite. I can't even say what I liked about it. It was slow.
What I Liked: I loved the way the workplace setting let us really see the heroine, Paige, in her element. Abbott really shows, rather than tells, us how amazing Paige is as a caretaker for her siblings and as a restaurant manager. It's more than obvious what Russell, her new boss at the golf club, sees in her! I would have loved even more examples of her having great ideas and executing on them!
For the most part, I appreciated the depth and detail of the descriptive passages. If you're a reader who likes to picture every bit of the world you're reading in, this is the style for you. I did skim some of them, I'll admit, but even skimming gave me a rich picture of Paige and Russell's world.
I also appreciated the strong Christian component. The characters all have their own faith journeys and we see them praying, attending church, and discussing the Bible and their spiritual practices with one another. The book even includes two church services, which include passages from Scripture readings and short sermons from the pastor, presented as dialogue.
Paige is coping with grief after the loss of her parents, and I thought the depiction of her process was very thoughtful and insightful. She throws herself into her work and new responsibilities, managing to be very 'present' while also disconnected from her life.
I loved all the supporting characters. Both hero and heroine come from large families, and they all have friends and coworkers as well. Everyone is so fun and has such a personality, and their advice and cheering on of the central relationship helps move the romance forward.
What I Didn't: I must admit, I was very thrown off when the characters started praying, and then, right there on the page in bold text, were the words of God speaking back to them, directly and in English! I can't speak for anyone else, but I rarely have that type of experience in prayer, and I am a bit skeptical of anyone who claims to speak for God. The theological implications, especially when getting into the issue of God's "purpose" or "plan" behind the death of Paige's parents, weren't something I fully agreed with.
I also thought the romance aspect was quite slow - Paige and Russell have sweet chemistry together whenever they are talking, but there's very little development of their actual romantic interest in each other. We see that Paige thinks he's cute, and talks to her friends and sisters about him, but I would have liked to see more specifics of her falling for him.
Russell decides early on to "pursue" her because of what he "hears from God," and even though Paige holds him at arm's length, he decides to keep "pressing." I know there's a fine line between a romance hero demonstrating his commitment and a refusal to take no for an answer, and I think Russell skirts it here a bit.
There were some formatting issues in the ebook, particularly with lines of dialogue, that sometimes made conversations hard to follow. And the use of commas in grammatically flimsy ways grates sometimes.
Overall, I thought this was a great introduction to the world of these characters, and I'm excited to see that Paige's sister will be the heroine of the next book in the series.
This is the first book I’ve read from this author. I really enjoyed the storyline and getting to know the characters. I appreciated the scripture usage and dialogue between the individual characters and God. It made it seem more like real life. I’m excited to continue on in this series to get to know the other characters more fully!
There are two negatives I see in this book. One obvious being the number of typos throughout this book. It was so distracting! I feel like with just a bit of effort, this could easily be fixed so the reader could get more out of the storyline instead of trying to figure out what the author was trying to say since there are tons of missing words, sentences, and punctuation. It was bad enough that I almost stopped reading it. The only reason I didn’t is because I hate quitting on something halfway through and I really wanted to see how the story played out.
The other negative to me was the inference that it was God’s plan for Paige’s parents to die. That doesn’t line up with the Word of God. The Bible is very clear that it is Satan who comes to steal, kill, and destroy, and it is God’s plan to give life and life abundantly. So if Paige’s parents were stolen from her/killed by a drunk driver, it certainly was NOT God’s plan! Saying it was God’s plan would be saying that He planned for someone to get behind a wheel of a car after drinking too much. That goes against his Word and His character, so that cannot be the Truth. You are correct however, that God does work all things together for our good and His glory. Although it wasn’t His will for her parents to die, He did work good in her life despite the terrible circumstances. THAT is the true character of God. It really bothers me when people/authors mislead their readers in that way, saying God is in control and death and bad things are part of His plan. God is not evil. There is no evil in Him, so He is not the author of the negative or bad things that happen in this world, but He is a good and faithful God, so He will use was Satan meant for harm and turn it for our good. If that would have been communicated properly, I think it would really, really help readers who are going through tough circumstances of their own!
It has been awhile since I have read "Christian Romance". Now I have read two books in as many days! I have never been a fan of books that are more about saving your soul then they are about telling a good story. However, Hannah Jo Abbott's Walk With Me (Even Still), is a wonderful balance between sweet romance and fundamental Christian beliefs. Ms. Abbott does a very good job of creating characters that are easy to relate to. The story of a woman who has lost her Faith in a benevolent God because of a fatal twist in her life drastically changes her career path, reminded me of times in my own life that I doubted God's plan for my life would involve such pain and suffering. The reminder that God and only God could take what man did that was meant to harm me, and work it to bring me joy and peace came at a time when I needed that message desperately. And isn't that just like God? He uses even a fiction novel by an author I have never read to remind that even if I walk through the deepest darkest times of my life, God is right there with me. And that thought brought tears to my eyes. Unfortunately, no matter how wonderful and creative Ms. Abbott's writing was, it couldn't make up for the serious proof-reading and editing errors I struggled through in the beginning half of the novel. I have one of those brains that is usually able to overlook grammar and spelling errors as I read and understand the context. So for me to notice the errors in this novel, they had to be plentiful! At times I noted half sentences missing! There misspelled words, comma splices and random single letters everywhere. The second half of the novel was much better and I am glad I stuck it out to the end. I have not decided if I will read the next book in the series yet. My library is full. My house is in desperate need of some house elves. And I think it is time to try some mystery thrillers for awhile. Maybe after all that I will tackle more Faith and Love.
Paige Kelly is acting as parent and provider for her younger siblings sine their parents were killed in a auto accident. Russell Pierce becomes manager of the country club where Paige works. He is awed and smitten at Paige’s ability to work full time and raise her siblings at the same time. She resists his efforts to be anything other than a friend for a time but eventually they become a couple in love. I don’t mind the biblical references and mention of God but having God speak to the main characters was a step too far for me. God speaks to us through his word the Bible and we speak to him through our prayers. I liked the story but not the references to God supposedly talking to the characters.
Realistic characters and story line. Paige is just surviving all that makes up her day to day life. Russell returns home wanting to be considered a man not the little brother. As their paths cross and life brings them together, God works on both of them and in the future is a life of happily ever after. A great read that beautifully shows the effect having a relationship with Jesus has on peoples lives.
was a spectacular story and plot line than had me fanning away my tears at various intervals throughout the book. It has made me reflect o issues than I had buried deeper than I realized. God is good and His mercy endures for ever away my tears at various intervals throughout the book. It has made me reflect o issues than I had buried deeper than I realized. God is good and His mercy endures for ever
This was an amazing story about finding true love and letting go of the past. Paige was taking care of her brothers and sisters. She was the oldest when both parents were killed in a car crash. She was made guardian of the children and estate, even though she was only 22 years old. She met Russell at the Club. He was the new manager and an instant attraction for Paige. Through it all, they finally found happiness. Enjoy their journey,.
It's hard to see people struggle with the lost of of their parents as this family did. I know I was very blessed with my family but it was hard losing my mother when God took her home. I was so glad that my Dad found a sweet lady to share his life when was so lonely. This story was a wonderful book to read a d I am looking forward to another book soon.
Overall, this was a good read. I love how patient Russell was with Paige and how he kept relying on the Lord. I will say that at one point I got a bit fed up with how long it was taking Paige to come to her senses. It just seemed to be dragged out a bit much. However, I do love that the author showed the need for a heart change… for Paige’s relationship with the Lord to be made right before she could move forward in a relationship with Russell.
This is a great book with a great message. Paige and Russell have to work through a lot of things to finally get to where they are suppose to be. If you enjoy a Christian romance, you will like this book. I believe this is the first book I have read by this author but will look to read more of her works. Was great!
The struggles with faith and trusting God are well written. Paige is a very strong person, but even the strongest need the Rock and Fortress that is the Lord God. When I read a story like this, I can see how exhausting it is to try to handle everything on my own. Thank you Hannah Jo.
Thank you Hannah Jo Abbott. You are an amazing writer and I sincerely thank God for the beautiful gift of writing He has given you. I love all of your books that I've read. Love your relationship with the Lord as well. Bless you dear Hannah. Your books are CLEAN, inspiring, romantic, true love and happy endings, yay!
By page 48 I was ready to pull my hair out because of the typos and missing words. Instead I started substituting words for the missing ones. Theologically I don’t agree with the trinity. But Russel and Paige’s story is a wonderful story of love and healing a broken soul.
I loved the story line and how close to reality Paige's emotions are after a trauma. The only issue that I encountered in my digital form of the book is grammatical mistakes, but if you are willing to overlook them, the story is a must read. I think this book and series should be a read before her millionaire series but I may be confused.
I really liked the story line and the characters. At first, I was a little taken aback by Paige's attitude-wanting to be strong so much, she wouldn't allow anyone to help her despite needing help. But as the story went along, I enjoyed watching her grow and turn back to God, even accepting help from Russell and his family. A sweet, clean Christian romance.
so sweet This is such a beautiful story, full of love, faith and hope. Paige was responsible for caring for her five siblings and didn’t think she could allow anyone to help her. But she met Russell and things starting changing, he was so wonderful, helpful and caring. They have such a sweet wonderful friendship. I enjoyed this uplifting sweet story.
I loved this book. The characters were real, with very human feelings and fears. At times I felt like I was sitting in church participating in a Bible study, and the pastor’s words in the book spoke to me as well as to the characters. It was definitely a “feel good” book!
This was the first book I remember reading by the author, but it won’t be my last. It is a wonderful romance, but there are other major issues in this great story. Grief and pain play a major part in it. Then it’s filled with the love of Christ in action.
This is an amazing and inspiring love story with endearing and charming characters that will steal your heart and touch your soul from the very beginning til the end as they journey towards their own unforgettable unconditional love story.
A great story of growing faith. She lost her parents & was legal guardian for her 5 siblings. She didn't expect or trust help from anyone. Great description of growing faith.
In a lovely story with loveable, wonderful characters Hannah Jo Abbot weaves the message we are never alone. I found myself willing Page to hear that message, cheering her on from the sideline. Very hard to put the book down.
This was a very well written Christian romance story. He's the boss and she becomes a manager who reports to him. They work through their issues both at work and at work and ultimately fall in love. I definitely enjoyed it and would highly recommend it!
I really think the author did a fantastic job of writing a story that was so much like real life. There were some sad times but the author shows what happens were we trust in God. Great story.
