The name Eric Liddell is a familiar one to many, having gained much fame through the film Chariots of Fire. A Christian athlete and missionary, his passion for his Saviour could be seen throughout his life. From university days to internment at Weihsien POW Camp, John Keddie’s biography brings together a specialist understanding of both Liddell’s faith and sporting achievements to provide an engaging account of this normal man’s extraordinary life.
Enjoyed the combination of Liddell's athletic accomplishments alongside his greatest accomplishment - that of living for God with his entire life. A good example for all.
The author is especially equipped to tell the story of Eric Liddell: he's Scottish and grew up around the stories of Liddell's racing successes, he became an expert of Scottish track and field having published several books of the history, and he is a reformed Presbyterian pastor, so he knows and understands the balance that Liddell practiced in his life as his sporting heroics grew nationally and internationally. Well documented and provides a refreshing look at a true hero of the Christian faith.
A well written, thought out book. I had difficulty “getting into it” because I’m not too interested in sports 😂, and Keddie delves into Liddell’s athletic achievements, records, & statistics quite a bit. But I think he balanced that well with Liddell’s mission work.
Still, after all these years from first seeing the movie back in 1981, the person of Eric Liddell has a strong impression in my mind. With this book, I now know him a lot better and am left with even more respect for his life and what he stood for.
