Love is the best defense in New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s explosive Mountain Mercenaries novel.
Gorgeous women don’t just stumble onto Ronan Cross’s remote property. But this one—vulnerable, victimized, and needing the kind of help only Ronan can offer—tells a story that makes his blood boil almost as hot as his need to protect her.
Since her father’s death, Chloe Harris has become a prisoner. Her own brother, a flesh peddler and low-level player in the Denver Mafia, is forcing her to sell her body for an endgame Chloe never saw coming: control over a vast fortune. Her only way out is to run—straight into the arms of the one hard-bodied man she can trust.
Defending Chloe could rain punishment down on the Mountain Mercenaries. Her brother has Mob connections and the local police in his pocket. But Ronan still has an edge—the unshakable loyalty of his deadly teammates. As well as an unquenchable thirst for retribution…and Chloe.
New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Tennessee where she lives, but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, Indiana, and Tennessee. She's married to a retired Army man who now gets to follow her around the country.
Ronan Cross is a hot Englishman, former SAS, and he works for Mountain Mercenaries in Colorado Springs. They’re a group of men who focus on saving women and children from “the dregs of humanity who want to enslave, rape, and murder them”. Chloe is one such woman and Ro is her hero. These characters have great chemistry. A good human interest story, shining a light on the horror of sex trafficking.
A well done romantic suspense, “Defending Chloe” can be read alone. The next book in the series is set up at the end to wet your appetite!
Defending Chloe is the second installment of Susan Stoker's Mountain Mercenaries series and follows Ronan Cross, the Brit of the group. When he see's Chloe Harris in too-small clothes and sporting a pretty nasty bruise he instantly feels protective of her and brings in his buddies to figure out how to help her.
I really liked the insta-love type of connection that Ronan and Chloe had and it made their story a very intriguing one. They were forced together by the crazy situation that Chloe found herself in but there was still a lot that they were able to learn about each other and it was fun to see them do that. Bottom line, this was an amazing couple to read about and a great story to read.
This book had my blood pressure on a roller coaster! I'm such a sucker for a hero rescuing the damsel in distress and for the evil character to get what's coming to him. This is one of those stories.
The Mountain Mercenaries are a team consistent of former military men of all walks of life. Their goal is to infiltrate and disband any organization that is hurting women and children. They are a secret group and on their down time, they have jobs that allow them to be gone when they need to go on missions.
Ro's public job is a mechanic. We first meet Chloe when she comes walking up to his garage asking for a phone to use. She is wearing ill fitting clothes and he notices a bruise on her back. Add in a spark of interest and Ro can't help but pursue Chloe's situation. What he finds out has him jumping in with both feet to rescue her. This scene did happen at the end of Defending Allye but you do not have to read that book first. Both books can be read as a standalone.
Chloe's brother has overtaken her life and made her a prisoner. The demands he puts her on have her desperate to escape. When Ro walks in to the strip club her brother owns, she finally has hope that someone will help her.
We learn in the beginning a few key facts and the reasons for why Chloe's brother has made her a prisoner in his life. Chloe has no idea and neither do the Mountain Mercenaries at first. This knowledge had me on edge. I wanted Ro to find out what was going on so bad that I was shaking my kindle at times. I honestly just couldn't wait for the truth to come out and for Chloe's brother to get what was coming to him.
I admit, this made for a pretty exciting read and that has me very impatient for the next book. I borrowed the audiobook on Kindle Unlimited and the narrator was fantastic. I highly recommend the audiobook.
I'll be honest and say that as much as I loved this book I skimmed through quite a bit of it. I know, I know! I'm a bad bad book dragon and I should be shamed but hear me out! I'm impatient and the inner monologue of both main characters kept bringing up things that had just happened and repeating them and talking about how they felt in detail and I just wasn't there for it. It's a personal preference of mine that I won't take back.
Other than that it was a great action-packed read! Though the main characters fell in love very very quickly it was both sweet and sincere. I liked them together. The respect they had for one another was amazing to see.
Even though this is the second book in the series it's the first book I've read. Maybe it's just because I don't know much about how the team was introduced in the first book but OMG some of them had such unfortunate nicknames! I'm tempted to read this whole series just to figure out why they were stuck with those names in the first place.
Overall, this was a great story with well-developed characters and an interesting enough tragic backstory that kept me intrigued!
THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD - I HATE HER BROTHER SO MUCH. KARMA IS MY GIRL THO!
Again, Defending Chloe was sucha good audio! After finishing it, I was so freaking pumped for the next book.. but I don't think it's available on KU yet? Maybe it is and I'm just super blind - who knows! Once that bad boy is made available, I will get it. Especially after that epilogue!
Okay, so this book had a shit ton of mafia jazz and some backstabbing betrayal. Again, I mentioned that I hated Chloe's brother in this book because I totally did. He was batshit crazy and was a golddigging brotha. He just didn't like that his older, smarter, and probably way better sister was going to get money from dear old mom.. and he was getting jack shit.
Now he felt like he was entitled to so many things.. and I just wanted to punch him in the face. The ending was just the cherry on top to his wickedness and I was so freaking happy.
Other than all of that stuff, I loved getting to meet Ronan (again) in this book. He deserved happiness and ever since the first book ended with him meeting Chloe - I shipped the heck out of them! They were adorable and they needed each other.
Overall, I can't wait for the next book because I seriously need to dive into Morgan's book. I'm loving all of the guys, action, and drama, with each book. I need more!
Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.
As a Probate and Trust Administration Paralegal I love a mystery that turns on a Will or Trust. What people will do for money that isn't even theirs can be just awful. Add a hot romance and I'm in plot heaven. This is my first Susan Stoker book and it won't be my last.
Ronan Cross is part of a group that rescues battered, victimized women, the Mountain Mercenaries. Weeks ago a woman wandered onto his property. She was dumped in a rural area near Colorado Springs, CO and Ronan was concerned for her. Her story was chilling, yet she willingly left. Ronan decided to dig deeper and find out what she was hiding.
Chloe Harris led a wonderful life, until her father died, she lost her job and her brother took over her life, keeping her a virtual prisoner. Nightmare is a kind word for what she has endured. When Leon literally tossed her out of his car and she came upon Ronan's property, she was a traumatized wreck of a person and it only got worse after Leon got her back in his clutches. His demand that she start servicing men at his strip club is the final straw. She is going to leave, but that night Ronan and his group show up and he gives her hope of escape.
Ronan will stop at nothing to protect Chloe and Leon will stop at nothing to get her back because she is the key to control over the vast fortune that was her mother's. Ronan and the Mountain Mercenaries have a lot to lose and Chloe's life to gain when they go up against Leon and with his Mob connections and the local police in his pocket.
I don't think I have read a Susan Stoker book that I haven't liked and this one is no exception. I devoured Defending Chloe and I look forward to the third book, especially after the epilogue we got in this one. These guys make me wish there was a team like them in real life. Ronan was a great hero who was always trying to respect Chloe and her needs (mostly for space) even if he didn't always understand them. I don't understand how Chloe went from the life she had all those years ago to been her brothers minion. She is a smart woman and I guess that it just served the plot. I liked her a lot in this book and she might be one of my favorite heroines from this universe. Together these two (and of course with the help from the other guys), they fight her brother and face some scary people, while slowly (or not so slowly) they fall for each other. I understood Ronan's actions from page one 'till the last, even if they didn't always seem to be on the side I wanted them to be. The pace was good and we had a lot of things going on and mysteries to solve which kept me turning page after page until I reached the end. I do think that the series is binge-reading worthy, but since each book is stand-alone you can just pick this one up. The main characters from book one also appear and Allye has more insight into what Chloe is going through, so we see her a lot, which is good.
DEFENDING CHLOE (Mountain Mercenaries Book #2) by Susan Stoker is a fast-paced romantic suspense that I read completely in one sitting. This is the second book in this new series, but it can easily be read as a standalone with the character crossover explained briefly so as not to be confusing.
Ronan “Ro” Cross is a Brit and ex-SAS in the Mountain Mercenaries. In between assignments, he loves to fix car motors from the garage of his remote property. When a beautiful, scantily clad woman appears in his driveway, he is shocked and then incensed when he notices a large bruise on her back. He offers to help her, but she does not trust any man.
Chloe Harris is in the middle of a nightmare. Her brother, Leon has taken over her life. She has gone from being an independent accountant/financial planner to being held as his prisoner. He is coercing her into prostituting herself at his sex club outside of Colorado Springs. He threatens her with his Mafia ties and believes she is completely at his mercy, but he does not know that a Mountain Mercenary has taken an intense interest in her and her situation.
With Leon’s Mafia connections, the Mountain Mercenaries may have taken on more than even they can handle, but there is no way Ro is going to leave Chloe and allow a club with unwilling women to continue to exist.
I absolutely love Ronan. Quiet, strong and yet gentle and an English accent - very HOT! Chloe is beaten down, but refuses to be completely broken. The romance begins very quickly and is extremely hot and intense, but Ronan never pushes Chloe into more than she wants and is willing to do. The suspense plot kept me turning the pages and the surprise plot twist regarding the reason Leon keeps Chloe alive and his prisoner was interesting. I did have a problem with the old-time Mafia code supposedly up-held by the head of the Mafia in the area though. For me, it was not realistic and was a small distraction from an otherwise strong romantic suspense. I do recommend this addition to the series and know you will fall for Ronan, too.
NOTE: The Mountain Mercenaries are in existence to protect woman and children wherever they are abused. These books all have some degree of sexual slavery or abuse. Some of the details are graphic, but I believe the author never crosses the line into exploitation.
Wowza! This is so awesome! I can't get over how well this author writes. She definitely knows how to intrigue, pull and anticipate very well. I was so glued to this book that I completely lost track of time...and sleep.
Ro is one of the amazing Mountain Mercenaries. He's pretty reserved, but when he knows what he wants or has to do, there's no one that could get in his way. After a woman shows up in his driveway, scantly dressed, bruise on back and expression scared, he knew that there was something NOT right about the situation. After all, rescuing abused women IS one of his jobs. So....game on.
Chloe can't believe her luck. Even since her father died, she's lost her job and moved in with her brother, which was the worst mistake of her life. Now? Now she's doing everything possible to stay alive, while trying to formulate a plan to escape. And one night when she thought her luck turns around, she ends up kidnapped. Really?
Where I thought Grey (first book) was pretty cool, I LOVE Ro. His intuition for what's both right and wrong are spot on, but it's his heart that will pull you in. And Chloe? She's stronger than she looks and determined to survive what she's been through...even when she tries to down play how bad things have been. The chemistry between the two is obvious top notch, but it's the actual relationship and how's built that I like the most.
You know why I love this series? Because these men fight for woman. They fight to make woman not only feel safe, be to be safe...even though they're scarred and flawed and totally have their own issues to deal with.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC from Netgalley and here is my honest review.
I loved this book it is the story of Chloe Harris and Ronan Cross. Women usually don't just stumble onto Rowans property but Chloe did and she needs all the help she can get.
Since her father died her brother a flesh peddler and also part of Denvers Mafia is keeping her prisoner. He is trying to force her to sell her body for a reason Chloe didn't see coming. Her only way free is to run into the arms of the one man she can trust. Helping Chloe could cause problems for the Mountain Mercenaries. Her brother has mob connections and cops in his pocket. Ronan has a team of the Mountain Mercenaries to help him.
I really could feel the chemistry between Chloe and Ro. You could feel her fear for the situation she was in and how much Rowan wanted to help her. You will love this story of love and danger. I couldn't put it down until it was done. I will be rereading this for years to come. You really should check this series and book out. I can't wait for the next one.
Chloe is her brother's captive, trapped and tormented for a reason she doesn't know. When her path crosses with Ro, he decides to rescue her.
This was a fun listen with a strong element of grittiness that manages not to get overwhelming. I enjoyed the chemistry between the leads and the surprising resolution of the conflict, though the way the romantic conflict dragged on a little afterward was disappointing.
Quick and enjoyable read but I didn't love this as much as some of her other stories. The relationship aspect moved pretty quickly and there wasn't much angst until the end, but it was very minor.
Better and better. I was literally scared to go onto the next chapter at certain points in the story. But the author didn’t let me down. Chloe and Ro are amazing. He is so sweet in trying to make sure she always has what she needs. Chloe is an amazingly strong woman. And there’s enough of the MM to make sure I get those books as well. (Have an idea on Rex, but I’ll wait and see). #netgalley #defendingchloe
Oh my goodness. It's dark, dangerous and addictive. I absolutely love Susan Stokers books and this one definitely doesnt disappoint. The characters are alive and running amok in your head. They keep you gripping the edge of your seat and the story line keeps you spiralling to the very end. Its intense and satisfying all in one. Cant wait for more
Chloe's brother is a mafia boss in Colorado Springs and has been holding her captive for years and has recently forced her to work at his strip club/whore house. She stumbled into Ronan's garage half-naked and bruised, triggering his protective instincts. Ronan convinces the Mountain Mercenaries to try to rescue her from her situation.
I thought the first book in this series was pretty good, but this one was even better. I listened to the audio version and will admit that Ronan's British accent might have boosted his likability for me just a tad. But seriously, this was an enjoyable story. The villain was nasty, the hero was sexy, and Chloe was.....?? Eh, she was likable enough, poor thing.
Ronan Cross hasnt been able to stop thinking about her since she showed up on his property. Determined to find out if she is ok, he will enlist his friends & team members help, for the woman he cant stop thinking of.
Chloe Harris's life was fine, a great job, friends etc, then it slowly unraveled and when her brother told her to move in with him she figured it would be great to reconnect and grow close again. Wrong, Her brother has ulterior motives she doesn't know about and turns her world into a living hell. Now, he want to force her into hooking at the strip club he owns. That is until a certain sexy man takes action to rescue her.
Ronan and his team learn she isn't there of her own free will and rescue her but that doesn't stop her brother from wanting her back. He just knows he will gives his own life to make her feel safe and keep her safe.
I like this book. Little unhappy about the ending being so anti climactic. . just wished for....MORE. Thus 4 stars and not 5. The ending was just there....all this suspense built up and than...blah, its over and not in an exciting way.
Still a very enjoyable read. I love the H/h and the secondary characters, a good series.
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) So we are back with the Mountain Mercenaries, this is the second installment and just as good as the first one. This is Ro's story along with his new love interest Chloe. Poor Chloe she has a horrible brother who is greedy and malicious, just a horrible horrible person. So since Chloe is set to inherit billions of dollars on her 35th birthday (which she knows nothing about) he keeps her alive, but decides she will work as a sex slave. Ro remembers Chloe from when she stopped by his house in the middle of nowhere and he can't forget her he noticed she had a bruise in her back and knew she was being abused. Won't tell you more so you can read, we also get to read from Gray and Allye.. Enjoy!
Defending Chloe by Susan Stoker was the book I was afraid to read. I LOVE Stoker but I really didn't care much for book 1, Defending Allye. But, like I said, I love Stoker so I knew I was gonna read this one. I'm glad I did because Defending Chloe harkened back to why I enjoy her books-good characters, really evil bad guys, and lots of action.
Chloe had a great life-good career, bright future. Then her dad died, Chloe lost her job, and had to move in with her brother. Things were okay with her brother at first...then he showed his true colors. He was physically abusive and was grooming her to work in the private rooms of his strip club where anything goes and all of it is recorded. Her brother is in with the mob and unbeknownst to her, Chloe actually did their taxes and books. Now her brother threatens her with the mob to keep her in line. She has been planning her escape for years but needs an opportunity.
Ronan is one of the Mountain Mercenaries, a secret group who helps women and children in bad situations. He is former British Royal Air Service but now runs his own mechanics shop. He has a chance meeting with Chloe and can't forget about her. He knows she is in a bad situation. He eventually figures out where to find her and how to save her. But, just getting her away from her brother doesn't end the danger. Then Ro has to figure out how to get her free from her sadistic brother! They build a relationship over the time they spend together, even though initially Chloe did NOT trust anyone. Ro has to show he is deserving of trust and he is really good about that. He doesn't force decisions on her or tell her what she is going to do. He makes her a part of all discussions and provides options so she can make a choice. Chloe hasn't had that in a long time.
Defending Chloe was a delightful read filled with some mafia guys, a terrible sibling and his despicable girlfriend, and the group of guys who save the day no matter what!
POV: 3rd Tears: no Trope: mafia Triggers: Series/Standalone: stand alone within an interconnected series Cliffhanger: HEA:
other former military men turned civilian badass like Fractured Honor by Kaylea Cross, Redemption Harbor series by Katie Reus, Cyclone by Janie Crouch...then you will probably like Defending Chloe!

What I love about this series is that it's about men who genuinely care about women and not because of romantic interests, although that does occur.
In this book some of the same characters are in it and some new ones. Allye was the MC (female) in book 1 and I love how things ended for her in book 2. She plays a secondary role in this book but an important one, so we get to see how she is after being saved in book 1.
Spoilers Chloe is the female MC in this book and the male MC is Ronan (Ro). Chloe is supposed to come into a LOT of money, an inheritance that her mother left her; however, she knows nothing of it since her father passed away prior to telling her. Her brother, however, knows about the money of which he is getting none! Meet the total horror of horrors! The blurb on GR calls him a "flesh peddler and low-level player in the Denver Mafia" but who would ever dream that one's own brother would try to sex traffic his own sister! Disgusting!
I love how at the end of the books we are introduced to the MC in the next book in the series, so I'm looking forward to book 3 which is FREE on KU, both ebook and audio! So I get to read Defending Morgan now and for no cost out of my pocket!
Wow what a read this was. Ronan finds Chloe and helps her and something about her he can't shake. Chloe is being held by her lunatic half brother and Ronan and the guys make it their business to figure out what's going on and what the backstory is with Chloe. Best part of the book. Plenty of steam in this one, and great twists and turns. I loved Ronan and Chloe. Great plot and plenty of action.
arc from NetGalley and Publisher for an honest review
This brother is one that needs a lesson taught him, controlling, greedy and selfish are just a few words to describe him and his actions are downright menacing. Chloe doesn't understand quite why he is behaving the way he is or treating her so bad, all she wants is to escape. Ro has been investigating ever since the woman turned up on his property, he is seriously worried but there is also a spark of interest in something more than just helping her. Exciting plot holding your attention as the suspense builds, characters that are easy to fall in love with. I am really enjoying this new series it is a bit different and fresh but still contains all the suspense and alpha male protectiveness that you know comes with a Susan Stoker story, full of twists and the unexpected but also contains the love and support of the team and the women as they each find their ONE! Fantastic read.
Defending Chloe is an exciting romantic suspense, and I want to thank the publisher, via Net-Galley, for the opportunity to read and review Susan Stoker’s newest release. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Defending Chloe from the first page to the last. This book has all the ingredients that make romantic suspense a pleasure to read. I’ve read many books by Ms. Stoker, and for me, this is her best. The writing flows beautifully and is emotionally-charged.
Chloe’s backstory engaged me immediately. Although she had initially bowed to her brother before she realized his evil, she is determined to break away from the devious plans he has for her. She fights like a tiger when cornered. I liked her character a great well.
Ronan Cross is a great hero. He stands for justice, he believes in saving other in peril and does it in an honorable way. He is perfect for Chloe in so many ways. I truly wanted him to earn her trust and her respect.
The romance between Chloe and Ro is gentle and the sexual tension builds at the same pace as their friendship. Although they fall in love quickly, they still manage to discover what makes each of them tick. I found their romance sweet and tender. I was really glad they found their happy ending.
If you enjoy romantic suspense with good amount of suspense and a great love story, then you will love Defending Chloe. The epilogue gives the reader the set up for the next book in this outstanding series, and I can’t wait to read it. Happy reading!
Another Susan Stoker hit!! I love this new series, who am I kidding I love any book written by her.. the romance between Chloe and Ro is awesome, quick and intense. This book kept me on edge of my seat waiting for the boom to drop. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Good writing style, totally safe, no ow/om drama, no push and pull. A protective and possessive Hero who only sees the Heroine and wants her to be truly happy. With a sweet happy end for now.
So why only 3 stars? Well, I just couldn't wrap my head around the Heroine's story. What happened to her and her father. How she lived for 3 years. How her brother could've pulled all that off. How her brother found this crazy girlfriend. For me it was just too much of anything. Over the top. And I just couldn't believe that a 30+ woman couldn't get herself out of such a situation. For 3+years?
And the issue with the money at the end. I get it, it's a lot of money. But just hand it out to random charities seems a bit naive and random. Nothing against charities, but with such an amount you just have to see to it, that it gets where you want it to go.
Soo, and now I'm waiting not so patiently for the next book in this series. Can't wait to read about Arrow and Morgan. 4 months seems like an eternity.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Great second book. Chloe's problem is very different from the first book, and Ro falls harder and faster than his team mate. Lots of creepy bad guys to take care of, plus lots of hot, sexy times.
The teaser for the next book...how long do I have to wait.
This exhilarating read keeps readers glued to the pages with lots of thrilling and gritty suspense. The characters are strong, convincing and easily enthrall readers with every aspect of their story and the hero and heroine both invoke emotions that have readers wanting this couple to get their happily ever after with every word they read. Chloe is a bit of a contradiction as she is strong and feisty but yet at the same vulnerable and skittish due to her situation and Ronan is a sweet, strong, protective and sexy male that readers easily fall for. The author does a great job of portraying the character and their personalities that readers really feel as if they know these characters. The chemistry between Chloe and Ronan sizzles from every page while the romance is sweet and full of passion and emotional angst.
The story takes place at a fast pace and just keeps the suspense and thrills building throughout as Roman and the Mountain Mercenaries try to uncover just what Chloe’s brother is up to while keeping her safe. Unexpected twists keeps the characters and the readers on their toes and the mercenaries pull everyone deeper into their fascinating and dangerous world that keeps readers intrigued and wanting more. The author vivid portrayal of this world ensures that readers easily get caught up in all the characters and the dangers they face and really who can resist guys who bad for all the right reasons.
I really enjoyed this second story in the series with Roman and Chloe.
Ronan was one sexy Brit who knew how to compliment a woman. Chloe was terrorized by her brother who was getting ready to make her sell her body. She was working on an escape plan when she met Ronan.
This was so good and had me hanging on until the end.
