Four teens no longer sure what they’re seeking. Four teens no longer sure whether it can be found.
They were supposed to be building a new world. One where the Earth is respected as much as the people who depend on it for survival. One where the benefits of Askala could be shared by all.
Except instead of bringing people together, Sam, Hawk, Luca and Mercy are more divided than ever. Sam has returned to Askala, learning exactly how vulnerable her home is. Hawk is trapped, forced to fight for his life to save those around him. Luca has returned to the Outlands to right his wrongs. Mercy is determined to find out the truth at any cost.
In the struggle to repair the world from the ravages of global warming, the fight to reunite is going to be their greatest battle yet. Because no matter where they are, treachery is far closer than they ever realized.
Living has never been more deadly.
Lovers of Divergent and The Hunger Games will be blown away by the next installment in the bestselling series, The Thaw Chronicles, from USA Today best-selling author Tamar Sloan and award-winning author Heidi Catherine.
Tamar really struggled writing this bio, in part because it’s in third person, but mostly because she hasn’t decided whether she’s primarily a psychologist who loves writing, or a writer with a lifelong fascination with psychology.
She must have been someone pretty awesome in a previous life (past life regression indicated a Care Bear), because she gets to do both. Beginning her career as a youth worker, then a secondary school teacher, before becoming a school psychologist, Tamar helps children and teens to live and thrive despite life’s hurdles like loss, relationship difficulties, mental health issues, and trauma.
As lover of reading, inspired by books that sparked beautiful movies in her head, Tamar loves to write young adult romance. To be honest, it was probably inevitable that her knowledge and love of literature would translate into writing emotion driven stories of finding life and love beyond our comfort zones. You can find out more about Tamar’s books at www.tamarsloan.com
A lifetime consumer of knowledge, Tamar holds degrees in Applied Science, Education and Psychology. When not reading, writing or working with teens, Tamar can be found with her husband and two children enjoying country life on their small slice of the Australian bush. The driving force for all of Tamar’s writing is sharing and connecting. In truth, connecting with others is why she writes. She loves to hear from readers and fellow writers. DNF 42% I sadly give up. I just don't care enough anymore for getting through this book not to be a chore. The book is not bad per-se, I suppose. After a "break" from the previous books of a few years, I decided to pick it back up since it was on Kindle Unlimited, but as soon as I got to the point that I remembered who's who, I realized I don't care enough about any of them and the story is going to be too long for me to struggle to get to the end of it. So for how much I hate to DNF, reading for fun should not be a chore, so I'm gonna stop right here. Maybe I don't do well with too-long series with generational change of protagonists. This is overall interesting and has many good ideas. I have been torn between stopping and going on. It feels too dragged, like that extra mile or two when you are already past exhaustion.
The series cover theme continues with this book, having a bird on it. I really like how all the books set in and around the world of Askala and its people all have a common denominator on the covers tying them together. I bet they will look amazing on a book shelf together. I’d love to see them all standing on a book store shelf….though I would be grabbing people and telling them to go look at these great books lol!
Our main characters are separated in this book. So, I will reveal just a little about the different situations my favourite characters find themselves in.
Sam has lied to the love of her life, Hawk in order to spare him having to choose between her and his want and need to be a Seeker. Sam has returned to Askala to be with her seriously ill younger brother Seb. I know we haven’t had lots of information on him but I think he is a character you cannot help but fall in love with. It’s clear that Sam is very close to her brother. Sam is using all her book knowledge on herbal remedies to try to make her brother well again. When its clear he doesn’t seem to be improving she tries to make different things to cajole him to eat and drink more. Though Sam discovers that Charity, (Grace’s daughter from the Newlands) has become close to her brother and also seems to be trying to tempt Seb with Newlands recipe broths too. Sam also discovers that Charity seems “off”, and somewhat secretive but puts it down to being still fairly new to Askala and her maybe struggling to fit in. Then when other Askalan’s begin to fall ill, and Sam stumbles upon Charity in the woods she has to wonder if this mystery illness is part of the Outlander/Newlander plan to take over Askala.
Luca has also left the Newlands but he is heading to the Outlands to catch up with Vitron and Gunnar as they are forming an army to take over Askala. Luca has a surprise when he finds two stowaways on his boat, Mercy and youngster Tarquin. Both the females refuse Luca’s strong request for him to return them to the Newlands so he has little choice but to take them along with them. Luca is very much an alpha male and thinks it is his job to protect Mercy & Tarquin. It is important that Luca kill Vitron & Gunnar as they know he is the mysterious saviour and protector “the falcon”. However, both Mercy & Tarquin are determined to help and in fact at one point, Mercy & Tarquin end up rescuing Luca. We meet more characters that live in Fairbanks and learn a little about their stories and lives.
Those left behind that remain to try to continue with the Seekers jobs are Hawk and Gust. We really do get to see a softer, more caring side to Gust in this book. The way Gust tries his best to take care of Hawk as he recovers from his beating. Then when the time to stand their ground against the Newlanders approaches, he makes it clear he will stand by the side of Hawk no matter what it may cost him. Of course, Hawk is missing Sam, at first believing what she told him about not having romantic feelings for him and then after talking to Gust realising why she said what she did to him. Sadly, things for the two remaining Seekers go from bad to worse, and they soon decide they need to leave and head back home to Askala.
There is so much going on in this series, there are so many facets of this world being slowly unfolded, and so many others being hinted at. This series has already given us the fantastic story of Askala and how it has grown. Then the Outlanders posing a threat to the original Askala, which then evolves. Next is the discovery of Newlands that Wren and Hawk visit, and the idea and choosing of the Seekers whose job it is to spread the word of peace, harmony and living with the world regenerating rather than continuing to kill off the land and future possibilities. The Authors have seriously thought out this world they created and worked outwards from it extending both its history and its different societies within it’s current worlds. I really enjoyed more of the spotlight being turned onto the women in the books too.
My immediate thoughts upon finishing this book were that there were so many twists, turns, shocks, and even more in this one! Wow! I didn't see that coming! Lots of situations where the female characters show they are just as strong if not stronger that the men in Askala, the Outlands, Fairbanks and the Newlands.
To sum up, another great book in the fantastic Thaw Chronicles. I am seriously looking forward to the next book in this part of the series and anything else set in this world by Tamar & Heidi too!!
“Exile: Beyond the Thaw” is the seventh installment “The Thaw Chronicles” by Tamar Sloan and Heidi Catherine. “Exile” is the second book in the “Beyond the Thaw” series, which is conceived as a follow-up to the original “After the Thaw” series, and it conceived not as much a traditional “spin-off” series, but as an organically continuation of the saga. “After the Thaw” explore the lives and decisions of the new Askalan generation in their existential struggle to build a more sustainable and equal society, within the scope of their own survival.
I already stated that “The Thaw Chronicle” series is without any doubt the best dystopian series of this decade, and not only lines effortlessly up with “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” but surpasses them with a very carefully crafted world, the right amount of dystopia and social critique, the constantly questioning of the values and drawbacks of the system that allow the reader to understand the strengths and flaws of the system and to find unsettling similarities to our own society. As already stated, “After the Thaw” and “Beyond the Thaw” should not be seem as separate series, they both are part of the “Askala-Verse” and flow into each other flawlessly and offer together an even richer perspective of what “Askala” represents.
Sam, Hawk, Luca and Mercy, the chosen ones, were allowed to seek beyond Askala, and build a new egalitarian world, where everyone could live and participate, according to the principles of Askala. It was supposed to be a quest for unity and redemption, but the search turned out to be more than they expected, dividing and forcing them to choose different paths. Luca has returned to the Outlands in the hope to correct his damage; Sam is back in Askala with the knowledge of where Askala vulnerabilities lie; Hawk is still trapped, fighting to save the lives of those he loves; while Mercy is more determined than ever to find the truth and save Askala. Four chosen ones, divided by which should be their biggest accomplishment, would have to find a way to trust each other and come together once more to save their world.
Tamar Sloan and Heidi Catherine have created a wonderful dystopian world, foreign yet familiar, beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Their writing is fluid and nuanced, with a very good editing and a powerful message, very well developed and multifaceted characters, an extraordinary thoroughly built world, action non-stop, an intelligent plot, and very satisfactory developments. It is a fast-paced book, a real page-turner, a great adventure that leaves a lasting impression without disregarding the level of pure entertainment every good story should provide. “Askala” keeps on growing and evolving, with a new perspective in the works “Tournaments of Thaw”, a series that will focus on the Remnants world, and of which a Prequel “Tournaments of Thaw” is already available. Usually fiction equals figure skating, the highest mark is out of grasp for even the best of works, Tamar Sloan and Heidi Catherine have achieve the almost impossible, for them 6.0 is already in their grasps.
I’ll round up to 3 because it did have plenty of harrowing circumstances that piqued my interest, as well as a solid presence of my favorite character Wren. But that’s as generous as I’m willing to be right now.
Despite the super solid start to this series with its first four books, I'm still having difficulty finding winning factors in these later entries like I did before. Things simply aren't looking too good right now and it's leaving me sighing in disappointment. Sure, I've still been attentive to them in general and am appreciative of the quick reads they provide me. I'm certainly not bored and I'm a sucker for the cleverly revealed revelations that keep me coming back for more (well-played to the authors). But overall, I'm feeling pretty underwhelmed in general.
Just like its predecessor, this entry is just too much all over the place, a factor made worse by our core four (Hawk, Sam, Luca, and Mercy) being divided. While normally this can serve as fuel for exciting thrills from multiple points of view, this time around I'm unfortunately still tainted by what contributed to the divisions in the first place: secretiveness and stupidity. I am legit STILL unable to accept that literally every Seeker (though especially Sam) thought it was a super great idea to split up, despite the Newlanders showing extreme hostility even BEFOREHAND.
Perhaps it's a spoiler, but I'm going to stress it even more and say it anyway. Sam's rather bizarre assumption that her friends would be safe on the Newlands after running away from a potentially forced betrothal to Raiden was literally the most ridiculous thing written about her. I dunno what the authors were thinking having her make that decision as it makes zero logical sense. The Seekers were already fighting a losing battle. What is so smart about LEAVING each other to this battle? Sam's choice in particular bothered me in the previous book and it STILL bothers me now. I don't see myself ever getting over it.
I did appreciate that the story still carried on, though, and still revealed some lovely surprises as each new entry still does well. The cliffhanger at the end of this one was fantastic and well-placed. I also loved having more of the original core four being featured (Dex, Wren, Nova, and Kian). They weren't HEAVILY present, but they were definitely present. The overall story is definitely still there and is moving along, but it's all still being presented to me in too sloppy a fashion. My hope for the story to turn itself around more to what I liked about the first four books is gradually eroding and I'm quite bummed about that.
Exile: Beyond the Thaw The Thaw Chronicles #7 Dystopian Tamar Sloan, Heidi Catherine ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

While I like this series, it's starting to feel a bit repetitive.
I found the pacing a bit too slow. I was eager to get back to Sam's POV, as well as Hawk's. The other POVs seemed a little unnecessary.
The plot twists were interesting but I did predict them all. Some of them were obvious even in the previous books.
I liked Tarquin. She's fierce and stubborn and for a child, she is surprisingly tough. It did get a little frustrating when she kept ignoring what she was told to do though because it always created more problems.
The ending was ok but again, it wasn't much of a surprise.
There are a lot of "life or death" situations in this book. Sometimes I want to say to the authors: "Enough is enough! Please, can't you just let them all live in peace and harmony?!", because I get so frustrated when the characters are put through this and that. Thankfully, there are some silver linings. For example, I love little Tarquin, and enjoy every scene she's in! And FINALLY, Luca has admitted how he feels about Mercy...
We get a couple of new surprises in Exile (some I saw coming, some I did not), and it ends in a gruesome cliffhanger...!
* I received an ARC from the authors and I'm giving my honest review. *
Book 7 Exile Beyond the Thaw an adventure in dystopian literature that unveils new secrets with each book. Characters you think you know turn evil, family connections you never saw coming, and the danger seems to grow by the day. Sam, Hawk, Mercy, and Luca are the seekers seeking beyond Asakla and bringing new growth to those they find. These two authors know how to deal out a very adventurous tale.
Sam, Luca, Hawk and Mercy are Seekers. They want to share knowledge with the Newlanders and Outlanders so everyone can live in peace. But that's not going happen. Askala is in danger of being invaded. All of the other seekers are gone. Only the four remain. Nothing is as it seems. There is death, pain recognition of love and deception.
Its an interesting story with lots of twists and turns. Sometimes, you just can't win.
Amazing storytelling about something that could be a reality. The future of Earth is uncertain as humanity can’t get over their destructive behavior except for a small community of people trying to save the planet. The characters are strong and the friendships stronger. I love this book and series and I can’t wait for more.
I couldn't put it down and read in one day. Continuing saga of The Thaw Chronicles. I find this even better than the hunger games or the divergent series. You will feel part of their lives and families as well as their fears and triumphs. These authors really know their stuff. I am a fan for life.
Honestly, this book deserves much more than 5 stars. With a series lasting as long as this one, you would normally expect the quality to start waning, but that is not the case here - it is actually getting even better when I thought it couldn't get any better. Absolutely amazing, one of my favourites of the year. Looking forward to the next one.
The dystopian adventure is revved up several notches in this book! As ever, I am so bowled over by the complexity and thought that has gone into the world building of the series. It's astonishingly clever. The perfect escapism read full of plot twists and turns and plenty of emotion.
I'm running out of things to say about this series! Sometimes it's hard to tell who is friend and who is enemy throughout this series but this one especially had me gasping at the evilness and betrayal in this book. Great book. Can't wait for the next one.
So much happening here. So many twists, some expected, some leaving me with the same "well shit" reaction that this series is so good at. Sometimes the characters made me so angry because they chose to do the wrong thing when it should have been clear what they needed to do. Will the Newlanders, The Outlanderd and the Askalans ever get along? I can't wait to see what will be revealed in book 8.
Another edge-of-your-seat, heart pounding read. The writing is superb, as is the pace and plotting, which leaves the reader with just enough downtime with heartfelt scenes to recover between all the exciting action scenes.
I was barely breathing as I was turning these pages!!! It’s like being at the top of a rollercoaster almost the entire way through!!! Soooo many new secrets revealed!!! Powerful and BEYOND CAPTIVATING!!! LOVED IT!!:-)
Amazing series. Each book is great by itself but put it together and quality imagination here. Great characters. Full of action, problem solving, death, love, fear, hope.
I don't know how Tamar and Heidi keep this series so exciting over 7 books, but they certainly do! I'm sure I held my breath for at least half of this one. It's spread over three different lands, which really keeps the action rolling along. There are some clever twists in there and some beautiful heartfelt moments too. I am so attached to these characters I never want this series to end!
