Phate (/fāt/) - a strong feeling of resentment toward a member of the opposite sex, which eventually compels both parties to be drawn to one another in love.Ze’Cheray walked into her first class of senior year thinking it was going to be a breeze. She walked out believing she made the worst mistake of her life.De’Veon’s deep chocolate skin, penetrating eyes, and edge of silent confidence made Ze’Cheray think the new guy just might break her out of her most recent bout of singleness.Until he opened his mouth. From that day forward, for some reason, De’Veon saw Ze’Cheray as his enemy and set out to ruin her life in every way he could.Ze’Cheray was up for the challenge… until she started falling in love.
Ze’Cheray is a quick witted, beautiful high school senior preparing for graduation and beyond. The high school drama she encounters is so realistic it will give readers flash backs to their own high school drama days!
De’Veon is annoying, just like readers remember those high school boys to be. A few times in the book I wanted to slap him myself!
I am looking forward to part 2 to see what happens with the two frenemies! This was a fun read!
Man this is my first read from this author and I can say I loved this story already. I did not like how she was bring treated in the beginning but I guess when a boy likes you he will do the strangest things to hint he got feelings for you. Sameena and Leisha dude ain't ish foreal you should never do that someone you claim is your best friend but as you can tell she wasn't. I am wish De'veon wouldn't had did what he did that was messed up so I hope in the next round she gets his ass back. It makes me wonder did he really even love her or just was using that to get what he wanted before he went off to school. Hmmmmm
Style: African American Urban Romance Story: 3/5 Sexual: Enjoyment: 2/5 Male: Series: Book 1 of 2
This was a no for me. I felt very frustrated. Although I did not finish I stopped at 84% and that’s a lot because I drilled believed in this book.
The relationship between Ze’Cheray and De’Veon was so distracting and driving me crazy. I know it’s an enemy to lovers story. However, I think I was frustrated because one day De’Veon was nice when not around others but mean the next day and you really didn’t understand his motives or what he was thinking. The only POV was Ze’Cheray.
Overall, I couldn’t enjoy and it’s my personal taste. Could be great for someone else depending on your taste.
***I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s definitely about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the stories you read. I hope this review was helpful.
OMG De’Veon was funneeeee however, he was way too old to be behaving that way. Seventeen or eighteen years old, almost a man, getting ready to graduate and still bullying a girl because he likes her. Nope! Yes, his disses were funny, but he went too far when he mushed her face with the cake, tripped her and said she lived in a cardboard box and stank. There is no coming back from physical violence and a boy saying that a girl stinks. Again nope!
I don't see how Ze'Cheray could still even look him in the face let alone have feelings for him after all he said and did to her. There are a few bonding scenes--like when De'Veon gives Ze'Cheray a ride home from the mall when it starts to rain. That was a beautiful moment. These scenes were interspersed between nonstop disses and public humiliation, which, by the way, were very well written.
The book was great and then took a nosedive when Ze'Cheray's ex was introduced into the story out of nowhere. I thought she was a sweet, innocent who never had a boyfriend, and then this guy is introduced about 2/3 of the way through the story and becomes a focal point. Also, the grandma's personality changed too. She went from wise counsel to jokester.
I would have liked to see De'Veon and Ze'Cheray gradually grow throughout the story. I was okay with the end, but it was too sudden.
I want to thank this author for the ARC in which she allowed me to read for an honest review. This story was an okay read, however I saw it more on the YA side due to these being high school students with a lot of drama. Also there were a lot of characters which became confusing at times. I look forward to reading the next book to see the growth in these characters leaving their childish behaviors behind. Thanks again to the author for the opportunity on reading this book.
So this was an interesting read. I've been out of high school for a minute, and I didn't have the same experiences in the 90's as these young people did. I think the story also makes me glad I don't have children or teens. They went through a lot of situations and there was a whole lot of drama. It was an interesting read, the characters were very interesting.
I received a copy of this book via booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Honestly I really don't know what to say about this book.
Ok so I will be the first to say that I love a good cat and mouse game when it comes to new love. That being said I feel like Ray Ray and De' Vein within is o. A whole other level. There's so much back and forth then, Bam!!!! I Love you.
Phate is a great high school story all young people should read. Stewart had me hanging on every word wanting to jump in and tell Devon and Ray Ray just get together already. I am already on to the next book. I have been really enjoying all the books I have not read anyone else's books in the last 2 weeks so keep them coming.
I loved this book.. I loved how they love each other... what I did not like was the ending.. I am anxiously awaiting f part 2..I want to really see what the kids are like as adults but definitely a good read.. author did amazing job
Okay, so you are going to tell me dude flaked out? After all that time. Stop playing with me. The girls drama was almost too much. But, I will be back for the finally.
No one should endure this much abuse from a person who likes them. Children 8-10yrs old, maybe, but high school students? Walk away young Queen, grow, progress and let them fall at your feet. This young boy was doing the most for a girl he probably liked.
Chile! The back and forth between these two were tiresome but I’m ready to see if they can get it together as young adults now. Also her friends were too much drama lol, and Leisha was crazy as heck to give up Yale for a cheater. Ray Ray and De’veon better get it get her in this book lol
I read Phate 1 and 2 and let me say this for the million and tenth time, I absolutely 💯 percent, love this author. She knows how to keep you engrossed. I have read the majority of her books and she keeps me coming back. The characters are very intriguing. I can't put her books down. She has taken the number one spot as my favorite author. I am ready for Leisha & Manual: Love After Pain. Cudos to you Tanisha!! Give me more!!!!
I really enjoyed this book. Even though this book was about a young adult romance, it still has life lessons for everyone. Self confidence and self esteem issues can be prevalent at any age. I hope that Ray Ray does what’s best for her, enjoy her life and not dwell on De’Veon. Can’t wait for part two to see the characters growth.
