Bernie Tobisch began his career as a technician for Singer. So what he doesn't know about sewing machines probably isn't worth knowing.

This is an essential guide to have in your sewing room, as it takes you through everything you need to know about looking after your machine and more importantly getting to know what it is capable of and how it works.

When I first started sewing, I remember I threw out a perfectly working, less than a year old sewing machine because I moved the tension wheel and didn't know what to do to restore the setting!!

The Troubleshooting Guide is fabulous, it is detailed and I think even if there was no more than this guide in the book it is money well spent.

Each piece of information, from tension to threading and needles to calibration is accompanied by photographs of the workings, followed by tips to inform and teach you.

I loved that the book has a ring bound spine, this makes it easy to use as it lies flat. It is a handy size so will be easy to put in your travel bag to take to classes, and more importantly uses simple language so there is no expert 'jargon' to get your head around.

After the first 5 pages I learned things about my sewing machine that I didn't know before. This book offers lots of troubleshooting information to allow you to get the best performance from your machine. It also is very clear when you need to leave it to the professionals. I am so glad I've added this book to my library.

Actually, about four and a half stars. The theory and generalizations about how a sewing machine works, how it can fail, and how to remedy common problems are all high quality here. Some explanations may be a bit terse for those without a knack for the mechanical, but the author still gives enough detailed information to help out with most likely problems and issues. Lots of illustrations, both of specific models of machine in photos and generalized drawings showing the theory and practice. A good overall survey of the state of sewing machine technology to 2020. However, it may not be a substitute for the user guide or manual for any specific machine, and it certainly is not a complete substitute for a repair manual. The author provides clear explanations though, and if you have any familiarity with this sort of technology, he probably will put you on the right track. Coverage includes (in general) both the all mechanical machine and the computer assisted machines of more recent years. Certainly appropriate reading if you are interested in the generalities or have specific questions and problems to solve.
