In Quake City, don't go down to the docks at night…
Smugglers are at work in Quake City. Private investigator Danny Ashford suspects foul play when a dockworker turns up dead, but the self-proclaimed best PI in town seldom avoids getting himself into trouble. This time’s no different.
Investigative reporter Deepa Banwait follows up a hot lead for a story, taking her to the docks. Landing an exclusive would be a big break for her, but how much danger will she put herself into to get it?
When Danny and Deepa cross paths, the trouble mounts for them both.
I've always written stories. I started out as a kid creating monster stories with a $5 typewriter from the early 1900's. Now I write novels: speculative fiction (SpecFic), crime fiction, or contemporary fiction according to whatever ideas occur to me. I live in Christchurch, New Zealand, about as far away from anywhere as it is possible to be. Earthquakes devastated the city in 2010 and 2011. They appear in my books. I've got a degree that I've never used and two diplomas, one in Hypnotherapy and the other in a subject I don't mention to anyone, as it was so long ago. I read widely: particularly SpecFic, YA, contemporary and non-fiction. My favourite author is Connie Willis, but I mostly read indie authors nowadays. I also enjoy copy-editing and proofreading other authors' manuscripts.
Great beginning book to a series. The author does a great job introducing characters that I look forward to learn more about in the future. The main character, Danny seems to be a very interesting person. There were enough clues dropped throughout the story that allows for more backstory and future plots, without leaving the reader with more questions than answers. The second prominent character, Deepa is perfectly positioned to become either a future love interest or a partner in justice. Very promising premise and I can't wait for more stories from Quake City.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
When a dockworker is found dead in the earthquake ravage quake city, PI Danny Ashford smells foul play. During his investigations, he crosses paths with Investigative reporter Deepa Banwait, as they both follow the same clues…
This story was a great beginning to what promises to be a fun series. I love the hard-boiled noir feel, the intriguing setting and great characters. Danny is sardonic and smart, but meets his match in the energetic Deepa.
