I enjoyed reading Kenneth Thomas' scifi adventure novel VanWest: The Past, so I was excited to read the sequel, VanWest: The Present.
The beginning of this novel reminds readers where they are in this dark future world. VanWest begins in the underworld of New Jersey, ready to make the shady, dangerous deal that will get him to Mars to continue his quest. Readers will see some old friends, as well as a wild variety of new characters in this almost cyberpunk adventure. VanWest is still our hero, and readers will see him tested again.
The writing style in VanWest: The Present is a lot like the first book, blending the simple, declarative narration describing a complex scifi universe, with lots of moving pieces, and stylized dialogue to show characters' backgrounds and personalities. And the worldbuilding still works, the factions have believable goals in this future, and the twists work well in the established world.
Although the factions of this universe are creative science fiction inventions, there's the same familiarity with current social issues that worked so well in the first VanWest novel. The concerns of inequality are present through this novel, while the story offers scifi conflict between the fictional Universal Council and the Earth Resistance. There's also an uplifting theme of allies and friendship that really works in a dystopian future.
The Past (#1) was very innovative and refreshingly original, combining dystopia, historical fiction and time-travel as it moved seamlessly through the futuristic setting of the year 3000 (in the Universal Games) to 1950s Paris and 1990s Florida as the Enforcer Captain VanWest tracked down a renegade sect bent on stopping technological and scientific progress in the late 20th Century.
The Present (#2), British author Kenneth Thomas delivers another fast-paced masterpiece. VanWest having decided between his masters (the Universal Council) and the newly formed EaR (Earth's Resistance, which includes the NEA and Utopians) he heads to New Jersey and then Mars. I really enjoyed exploring the Jerseyan world (those living underground on Earth) as well as the mystery and intrigue in discovering more about the (now extinct) Martians and his origins.
VanWest's mission to Mars converges with other story-lines involving the Jerseyans, the NEA-Utopians, the Enforcers (there is a lot of plotting and ally building). The book felt very current, covering topics such as lock-downs, redundancies, inequalities. Method A proved to be a very cool and interesting character - with her own style, customs and way of speaking.
The book ended with a great twist, can't wait for The Future (#3).
I really enjoyed the second part of VanWest book series! It’s very fast-paced and movie-like. The author keeps you guessing what will happen next. Apart from entertainment side, it also makes you wonder about the climate change and the future of our planet. Totally recommend!
Spoilers: Previously on VanWest: The Past, VanWest, the ultimate super soldier and Universal Games champion, traveled back in time to stop a resistance group called The Utopians from changing the past by halting Earth's environmental destruction and the Universal Council's stranglehold on the 30th century. After VanWest infiltrated the Utopians, he was drawn by their philosophies and became enamored with his former childhood friend, Iris VonHelmann, daughter of the Utopian leader Prof. VonHelman, AKA "Mad Newton". He also learned that he was the clone of the last Martian President and his psychic abilities foretold that his former allies will slaughter his new ones. VanWest, once the pride of the Universal Council Elite Enforcers, joined the Utopians and became involved in their attempt to assasinate the ruthless UC leader, Dr. King. The assasination attempt and trip to the past ended badly. However, the Utopians made new allies with Van West's former squadron, the Enforcers. Now, Iris, VanWest, and computer hacker, LeSouris are in New Jersey's underground trying to obtain a ship to Mars while VonHelman seeks to recruit new allies to join the resistance against the Universal Council.
Kenneth Thomas's VanWest The Present is a teriffic follow up to the previous book, The Past. It is not as complex as the previous volume with the various scenes of time travel and double crosses that further confuses the plot. The Present's plot is pretty straightforward, separating into mostly two distinct storylines and emerges the better for it. Besides the major settings between two very intriguing locations of Mars and the Underground Cities in New Jersey are well-written and described.
A group of New Jerseyans settled in the abandoned tunnels in the Garden State, forming their own underground societies in which the cities are connected via an intricate network. Because they have been underground for so long, the New Jerseyans have evolved to adapt to their surroundings, such as enhanced eyesight, resistance to radiation, and gills. They also have unusual speech patterns such as removing some verbs such as "am," "is", and "are." ("Them two on news wire all the time! This brings heat to my casino!") New Jersey's income largely depends on the literal underworld. It is filled with underground casinos and Papini traders. (Papini is an addictive drug that promises relief from radiation poisoning). The underground underworld is led by several warlords, one of whom is Method A.
Method A is a flamboyant character that calls to mind Aunty Entity, Tina Turner's character in Mad Max Beyond The Thunderdome. She shamelessly flaunts her wealth from gambling and narcotics, but rules her people with firmness and protectiveness. When VanWest, Iris, and LeSouris arrive in Jersey to try to get a transport to Mars, Method A is naturally concerned that their presence will bring Super Soldiers to her tunnels. However, the promise of moolah (money) and VanWest's prescient warning of their arrival changes her mind. Once an antihero looking out for Number One, Method A becomes a card carrying member of the Resistance and this Reader's favorite character in the series. The nice thing that Thomas does in this book is expand the POV from VanWest and Iris to other characters. Method A in particular benefits from this. While VanWest, Iris, and La Souris are in Mars, Readers return to Method A's doings as she and her people fight the Super Soldiers and broker alliances with other warlords with clever names like Rulez Haah and Gangs Hater. During the Universal Council's attack on Jersey's underground, Method A shows true leadership abilities as she guides her people to safety while fighting the soldiers and negotiating with the other warlords.
Meanwhile VanWest's exploration of his past on Mars is moving and heartfelt. This journey has a great setting for him to explore it. Mars proves to be a contrast to the dying Earth. Instead the Red Planet is brimming with life and beauty. There is a volcanic plain which spews eye-catching vivid red and yellow plumes of lava. Ornate murals that reveal Martian history surround a chamber. The "Face on Mars" mountain makes an appearance and still seems to form a human face (and has become a tourist attraction). There are many spaceports filled with wide varieties of visitors from miners to drug dealers.
The more VanWest, Iris, and LaSouris travel through this alien landscape, the more VanWest gets flashes of the life of Dederic Vander Westhuizen, the last Martian President and the man from whom VanWest was cloned. He sees his wife and family. He sees his battles and arguments with the Universal Council. VanWest is haunted by the ghost of Vander Westhuizen's daughter who points him in the right direction to learn about his own history and that of his predecessor. VanWest also recalls his life and early training as a clone forced to follow the UC's lead and given no other options in life. An eerie passage occurs when VanWest finds himself inside a lab and comes face to face with other clones of Vander Westhuizen. They are similar to VanWest in appearance, characteristics, and abilities including psychic abilities. VanWest is able to use that to his advantage as he mentally communicates with his fellow clones so they can fight the Council and the soldiers.
The final chapters feature extensive battles in Mars and Jersey. These chapters shine with action, suspense, and betrayal. Alliances are formed and some are permanently broken. People question the motives of an important character who has been around since the previous book to the point that it is possible that the character may emerge as an antagonist in the next volume. The final pages reveal promise for a better future, one of cooperation and community over conquest and violence. However, there might be trouble on the horizon, trouble that will no doubt be the focus of the next volume, VanWest: The Future.
If The Future is anything like the previous volumes of The Past and Present, it should be a bright future indeed.
DISCLAIMER: I was lucky enough to read this book after the author reached out to me. I hope the prospective reader will read this review fully before making any prejudgments on the book. I will give the book my thoughts, good and bad. Also, this review contains opinions that are my own and not the author’s. My thoughts will be different from your thoughts and just know that before reading the book.
After reading the first book in the VanWest series, The Past, I read on to The Present. This takes place after the first novel. VanWest has to confront his dark past. This is what has to be done to defeat the universal council. To defeat the Council’s space army, he has to uncover the many secrets of Mars and bring together Earth’s main opposition groups. VanWest sees success, but nothing is what it seems. There is a twist of fate that he could never have foreseen.
I love that there was a reminder of the world that we were living in. VanWest is experiencing a dark world that he thinks is the end. I love the addition of the universe that we know in this book. It is exhilarating to be able to have what we know as Mars in the story. The first and second book have the same style in writing. It made for the perfect continuality that was easy to connect the points that were important in the first book and the second. If you think of the book as a thread and you connect the first and second, you find that it threads in and out of the books. They are connected almost at a deeper level.
The characters in this book are just as amazing as the first! I want to talk about the most important thing that can ruin a second story is when the characters seem different in the second book than the first. There is something that is amazing about a book that has the same people and they act the same way. I felt as if I could read the first and second book mixed, and the people would all have the same personality. This is an amazing feat. I wasn’t expecting this kind of brilliance from an up and coming author.
My Rating: This is absolutely a 5 out of 5 stars. Since the first book was fast paced in setting, the second needed to be as well. This was fast paced all in the right ways. I think it is a book and an author worth watching. This book is a read again, as well as the first one. This was such a different book for me to read. I am not regretting it at all. I am so glad I took a chance on a new story. I would recommend this book to the readers who don’t read sci-fi, don’t read a lot, or the readers who want to take a chance on a brand-new adventure that is truly out of this world.
I hope this review helps you in making your next book choice. Happy reading!
I was excited to read the book as I've read and enjoyed VanWest The Past. I'm always worried about sequels being disappointing or just being a bridge for book 3. I'm happy to say that it was not the case with The Present. It was as gripping as book 1 and the writing was even better. It is always good to support indie authors with great books like this. VanWest's adventures continues in this book. Somethings are familiar while we get introduced to newer things in the universe. A good post apocalyptic world story always acts as a cautionary tale. It parallels with today's world and imagines what would happen if we took an ideology too far. This book does it well and I'm curious where the author will take it next.
The second installment of the VanWest series not only ties in perfectly with the first, but shows Kenneth Thomas' writing to be as engaging as ever.
Having got into the first one very much, I ended up reading them both over two days. This book more than satiated my hunger to remain in Thomas' world. Almost filmic in its speed and heavy reliance on action sequences, The Present portrays Captain VanWest as demanding and alluring a protagonist as ever.
The faintly hidden allusions to our own current climate crisis suited me well too. I always like to relate to something in a novel and typically do not find this easy to do with time travel things. Forming his dystopia from the current world around him, however, Kenneth Thomas presents something in this book that I was able to relate to.
I'm excited for the third instalment that is scheduled for release on 2023! Not sure I can wait that long...
The second book in the VanWest trilogy certainly doesn’t disappoint. Like its predecessor The Past, the second entry, The Present, continues to mirror and explores issues in our own world, including social inequalities and lockdowns.
As always, Kenneth Thomas unveils a detailed universe with lots to discover, revealing many worlds that each hold their own secrets. Readers won’t be bored with this book, as it comes packed with its own ups and downs, twists and turns.
Importantly, this second part of the VanWest trilogy considers resistance. This seems particularly prescient in our contemporary world, and is surely a necessary step for humans living in late 21st century capitalism.
Science fiction is always important, and it continues to be so!
Thomas strikes again with 'The Present', the second instalment of the VanWest series. Without any spoilers, the second part of the VanWest's journey picks up the action right where the first part left off. The new book answers every question that had been left hanging in mid-air in the first book. The quick-paced writing and action that made me fall in love with the first book makes a fabulous comeback. VanWest's journey across time and space is nail-biting experience, set in a world far away that feels so realistic and true to life nonetheless. If you liked 'The Past', you're gonna love 'The Present'.
There aren't many up and coming writers that I follow closely, but Kenneth Thomas is worth watching. The Present is his 2nd book in the VanWest series. I had it preordered but only recently found the time to read it and man am I glad I did.
I loved the past but actually enjoy the 2nd book more. Since we are already aware of the vibrant world, we can go straight to the action. It's like in Star Wars. The New Hope was incredible but The Emperor Strikes Back is even better because it has a powerful base. This sentiment applies these first two books in the series.
My favorite part is the way the characters interact with each other. They feel fully 3-dimensional and a part of this fantasy world. This isn't a book where you will find yourself immersed in the world but zoning out a big when the characters talk - the people here really say things that are memorable and attention-grabbing.
This series continues to subvert expectations. Just when you think you know what's going on, the author throws a curveball. And, the "curveball" doesn't feel cheap but rather a realistic part of the world. He really kept me engaged throughout the whole novel. Great pacing.
Kenneth Thomas continues to explore the interesting themes from The Past. Though I finished this fast-paced book quickly, I thought about the concepts covered for days after. Yes, this book is entertaining but it has substance too.
This is a truly thrilling middle chapter to this trilogy. I was a little hesitant coming in as middle books are notorious for having filler, but, in many ways, this is even better than the Past. It has definitely kept me engaged and wanting more so I can't wait until The Future is released.
If you're a sci-fi fan, I encourage you to give this book (and series in general) a shot. And, if you only dip your toes into the genre, I promise you won't be disappointed. This is definitely an incredible read.
The VanWest series continue to surprise me. Just when I thought I couldn't like these books more... it happened.
Action-packed ☑️ New perspectives and characters ☑️ A whole new language and cultural diversity ☑️ Good vs Evil battles ☑️ Exciting plot twists ☑️
The whole book kept me turning pages surprisingly fast. It was all action and excitement since the very beginning - I needed to know what would happen as fast as I could. The multiple points of view weren't an issue at all for the fast-paced sequence the story was maintaining, since every scenario highlighted how the world system worked and the flaws and problems surfacing on the different sectors from a decaying empire (the one The Universal Council had created). There was also great credibility on the characters' growth. Each of them acted according to their personal beliefs and some of them even died for them. And well... that ending! It was all good and then -- a final Plot-Twist! I don't even know how am I supposed to wait until 2023 for Book #3 to come out.
VanWest The Present is for sure one of those books you won't be able to get out of your head once you have read it, as well as VanWest The Past. Highly recommend!
This wonderful book is a sequel that does not disappoint. The thing that I noticed right away was the fast paced action, I could almost feel the rush, fast paced battles, and everything just kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time. It is useless to say “I will finish this chapter and go to bed”, because you will find yourself one hour later with your eyes wide open, reading one page after another. I really liked reading about the Jerseyans, an amazing species with remarkable and interesting features. Their underground world is a unique universe that reminded me a little bit of the many races is the Star wars movies. And yes, let’s not forget about two characters that really brought a smile on my face, the scorpion kings Barbie and Ken :) And Mars? That is something you will not expect. The author imagination shows us an inhabited planet, filled with lava and futuristic domes, but corrupt and enslaved. The author shows a special talent in playing with the language, you can almost hear the unique accent of the Jerseyans, and that makes this species all the more interesting. I am wondering how would they look and sound like in a movie?! Really looking forward to part 3, The Future!
After reading the first novel of the series, VanWest, the Past, I did not anticipate enjoying the second novel even more than the first! The second novel guides readers through VanWest's personal quest as he finds allies, plots against enemies and decides between Ear and his masters. He travels from Mars to places like New Jersey which establishes a great parallel between the fictional world created in the novel and the reality of these places in real life. VanWest, the Present ends in a cliffhanger(you will have to read to find out) making readers eager to find out what happens in novel #3! Highly recommended!
Kenneth Thomas’ second novel in the VanWest series not only shows his mastery of the written word but the mastery of science fiction as well. The characters prove the author painstakingly created detailed backgrounds for each character element and scene. Not to mention, Thomas created a unique science fiction novel that doesn’t borrow from other science fiction novels in the least bit. While his first installment in the series needed a little improvement, the second installment is on point.
The second book in VanWest series, VanWest: The Present, begins with a thorough prologue that offers new readers a robust introduction to the adventures partaken by protagonist VanWest in the first book of the series, VanWest: The Past. Although I highly recommend starting with the first VanWest book, this second book is skillfully written and may work well as a stand-alone novel. The author, Kenneth Thomas, has a beautiful descriptive writing style for ushering readers forward throughout the action of the story, bringing the words of an imaginative and thrilling space-travel plot to life. Methodologically written, Thomas extrapolates the series upon current events from our actual Earthly timeline in order to further emphasize the dystopian nightmare the citizens of Earth are up against and what VanWest will do in his present to correct the evolution of humanity. Set in a dystopian future on Earth during the year 3000, VanWest: The Present is brimming with intrigue as various character plots and motives intertwine during an uprising for a global power-grab with the fate of humanity on the line. Joining forces with the Utopians in order to secure humanity’s future, VanWest is reunited with his long-lost childhood friend Iris who is the daughter of the Utopian leader. Together, whilst meeting new characters along the way, they set out to stop the Universal Council Elites from regaining control over the now uprising populous. Just as captivating as VanWest and his strengthening psychic abilities is the development of minor characters in the plot. With the fight for humanity’s “New Beginning” sprung forth, readers engross in a teacher-student face-off for unprecedented democracy, a cyborg invasion for imposing martial law, ruthless warlords negotiating to band together, and decisions to trust outer-space smugglers operating solely for the love of “moolah.” Each chapter in this novel is charged with vibrant and enthralling adventures as readers get to enjoy creative and amusing scenes flourishing in futuristic Sci-Fi flair. Clever, magical, entertaining, and occasionally humorous, VanWest: The Present delivers a compounded and augmented plot, arguably surmounting its prequel. Thoroughly enjoyed, I highly recommend.
The second installment to Kenneth Thomas’ ‘VanWest’ series, ‘VanWest: The Present’ offers readers yet another action-packed ride through the British author’s dystopian-tinged, sci-fi universe.
Picking up where Thomas’ previous novel, ‘VanWest: The Past’ left off, Captain VanWest is once again at odds with the Universal Council, and this time he is bound and determined to liberate his people once and for all. His quest to save Earth and overthrow the Council eventually sends him to Mars, where he uncovers a secret that forever changes his perception of the universe.
Much like the previous entry in this series, Thomas leans heavily on well-established sci-fi and dystopian topics (A.I., Eugenics, Planetary Warfare), all the while putting a fresh spin on what might otherwise feel like genre tropes. But what really sets this novel apart from its predecessor is the highly-touted twist that I honestly never saw coming. Add to that the added dynamic of a love-interest (by way of the intriguing Iris), and you have yourself a stunning sequel that sidesteps any hint of a sophomore slump.
Featuring smart, wit-laced dialogue and a pitch-perfect plot, ‘VanWest: The Present’ is a deceivingly fast read, one that offers readers all the world-building and planet-hopping one might expect from a six-hundred page epic in a trim, page-turner package. While I highly recommend reading the ‘The Past,’ Thomas somehow manages to craft a sequel that is easily enjoyed without any prior familiarity with the ‘VanWest’ saga.
If you are a fan of science-fiction in any of its many forms—especially fast-paced space-epics in the vein of James S. A. Corey’s ‘The Expanse’—I highly recommend you check out this series.
Nice to see that a novel picks up right from where the preceding one ended. VanWest is still battling against this clever and annoying Council. Traveling to Mars, getting injured and interestingly being able to feel and see possible future things of happening. In weird ways, we too live currently in a dark present/future. Loving that my home state of NJ is alive in here. This felt like StarWars with Luke & Han first meetings and deals. Nice touch.
Just like the first novel, I went through it in three days. Thomas continues to world build, slowly and keep me hooked. The action keeps on moving just like in book one. Still gripping with life decisions and what true choices to make and how it will impact the true friends and enemies around him. Selected and well placed plot twists, just like our own typical lives. The philosophy is still enrich in here as we delve into new characters and perspectives.
I’m still liking this guy a whole lot. Curious to see how the ever waiting continuation brings to us.
I’m very much impressed that the author, Kenneth Thomas, in his second book, VanWest The Present hasn’t failed to deliver. In this book, Ken continues to create the perfect blend of fantasy with a dose of reality. As we see mutants, explore New Jersey's crooked underworld and the formation of allies with our principal character, Captain VanWest. The book is astonishingly captivating and thought-provoking, not to mention the mystery and thrill-packed in the plot. The storyline is nothing short of clever and outstanding! It completely blows my mind how Ken so richly develops each character that they feel so real as the people around us. Honestly, VanWest The Present is everything you'd hope for in a dystopian sci-fi novel. It is a well-built sci-fi story with a rich artful sense. I can’t wait to read the next book in the VanWest series!
After reading the first book in the series (The Past), I was eager to get my hands on the second. The dystopian, science fiction plot continues by tracking Captain VanWest's fate as he decides between the rebel faction of Earth's resistance and the Universal Council. The story's deeper meaning explores our role as humans in the galaxy, preservation of Earth and nature and the societal inequality that plagues us even today. Through Van West's experiences, Kenneth Thomas forms a brilliant narrative on modern society and intertwines into an entertaining storyline, dotted with twists and turns that will keep you reading! I highly recommend starting Thomas' VanWest series; it is prime entertainment! Excited to read The Future (#3 in the series).
I really enjoy British author Kenneth Thomas, is the second book in the series, I totally recomended to read his first book The Past, if you haven't already. Excellent new characters are added in this interesting novel, I also really like the author's way of writing, the new characters are very interesting and the story captivates me. The Present is a lot like the first book, The Past, but with a interesting twist, I really enjoyed the Jerseyan world! What a great sequel! and discovering more about the Martians and his origins. A complex scifi universe, something that sci-fi fans will really enjoy. I hope that the continuation of this book series, number 3 will surely be as interesting as his last two novels!
"The Present", the second book in the Van West series, totally engaged me for couple of days!! I loved the first book too, but this one was even better. It was more compact than the previous one- very well plotted, well presented, and all through engaging. A very important feature of this book is it's seamless continuity with the first book, as with the story, narration and the characters; it seemed like I have just turned the other page of the book. But the present has it's own suspense and twist-turns as well! As an awesome and successful Sci-fi plot, this book totally nailed it! I loved this book and, as the last page suggested something more interesting is coming next, eagerly waiting to read it!
This is a refreshing sci-fi novel that really has twists, turns, and action at every corner. I couldn't put the book down after I started reading it! I was impressed at how high-octane this book was, and how it had a lot of the same energy as the first book. It does take place right after the first book, so the whole book definitely has a really good vibe to it. Amazing characters, fun story, and truly something that sci-fi fans will enjoy. Many people who read these books look for a good story, and this one has it. I definitely recommend this if you're someone who likes sci-fi books with a great, engaging plot to them.
The Present is the second book in the series from the British author, Kenneth Thomas. This thriller is set in the great state of New Jersey, as well as the planet Mars. One of the major themes I love about this book is unity. There are allies that are made throughout the story that bring about real values in a current ages that needs all the community people can get. There is truly something for everyone with this book. If you are a fan of sci-fi, there is nothing better than this book at your fingertips.
You will find yourself purchasing this the moment you finish the first in the series. The book has an incredible twist of plot which will come completely unexpected. 'The Present' has more of those scenarios that inevitably leave us questioning our own lives, which is one thing I love about these books! Another must read!
The Present - British author Kenneth Thomas delivers another fast-paced and captivating masterpiece! Captain VanWest having decided between his masters *(*The Universal Council) and the newly formed EaR (aka Earth’s Resistance, also includes NEA and Utopians) he heads New Jersey and then Mars. I really enjoyed exploring the Jerseyan world (those living underground on Earth) as well as the mystery and intrigue in discovering more about (now extinct) Martians and his origins.
VanWest’s mission to Mars converges with other story-lines involving the Jerseyans, the NEA-Utopians, the Enforcers (there is a lot of plotting and ally building). The book felt very current, covering topics such as lock-downs, redundancies and inequalities. Method A proved to be a very cool and interesting character - with her own style, customers and way of speaking (she totally rocks!).
The book ended with an amazing twist and now I can’t wait for the next instalment - The Future (book 3)!!
I had read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the Vanwest trilogy, titled Vanwest:The Past. Ever since, I've been anticipating the release of the second book to learn about how the story progressed. And hey, it lived up to the expectations and didn't disappoint at all!
Though the first chapter gives a brief overview about the story so far, I highly recommend reading the first book to get the complete picture
The story continues with Vanwest's attempt to reach Mars to accomplish his mission. Alongside, there are few other storylines involving the Enforcers, New Jerseyans and so on that makes this book even more interesting
Several new awesome characters are introduced and my personal favourite being Method A,who was just sassy and strong.
The plot is fast paced and exciting making you turn the pages fast to see how the story unravels.
When everything seems to fall in place and is about to end, another mind-blowing twist is thrown into the picture and now you can't help but longingly wait for the next book.
Overall, an epic science fiction that you'll surely enjoy.
After going through the first part of The Past (#1) by Ken, I was anticipating the release of the sequel and I'm glad that I got my hands on to second part The Present (#2). Ken has again portrayed the protagonist with sheer brilliance captivating the interest. The writing style is similar to the 1st edition but there are more twists & interesting moments in this version. The action in this edition explores our roles as humans in the galaxy and discusses climate change and other disparities in our modern society that prevents growth. In this edition, Van West travels heads to New Jersey and then to Mars for his personal quests and with his every move the story grows. What I really enjoy the most the ability of the author to grow the character as the story moves forward. Van West ends in a squeaker and to get out you need to read the book. It's a must-read for all the quixotic folks out there. Looking forward to the next part.
If you enjoyed The Past, you'll really love The Present. There is some explanation of the previous book's highlights, but I recommend reading The Past first if you haven't already. In this book, Captain VanWest is back, and trying to stop the Universal Council. Unfortunately this brings him into contact with people from his past, which causes complications. He's forced to deal with these issues while trying to defeat the Council. The plot is fast paced and will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. I look forward to reading the next installment.
Loved the first book in this series so couldn't wait to dive back into the creative mind of Kenneth Thomas.
Overjoyed with the second instalment, Thomas doing an excellent job delving more into the dark past of VanWest! A really great, suspenseful sequel full of action from the off! Not disappointed in the slightest.
