Murder in an exclusive gymnasium. Counterfeit pharmaceuticals. A kidnapped witness. The Sinaloa cartel again.
Phoenix Assistant DA Clara Alvera calls Detective Lori Sanchez in the middle of the night to report the gruesome murder of her friend—a reporter named Josie Vale. The reporter was onto a story about counterfeit prescription drugs and the powerful Maraxx Pharma Corporation. Sanchez vows to protect the only witness named Lolita, a young gymnast.
As Sanchez builds her case, she learns that members of a local gang are perpetrating murder and trafficking fake pharmaceuticals. The Sinaloa Cartel—Sanchez’s old nemesis—is deeply involved. But how? And why do dead bodies keep turning up to block her investigation?
Sanchez works with her old friend, Father Guillermo Montero, to unravel a complex criminal enterprise that is hidden under the desert. When the cartel kidnaps Lolita, Sanchez must solve the mystery and save her life.

In what is believed to the third book in the Detective Sanchez/Father Montero Mystery Series by Fred G. Baker it is the author's personalization of the characters that really draws the reader into this plot twisting and turning detective story. The action is intense yet not described in grisly details, while the suspense building is top-notch. But, it is the interaction and relationships between the characters that truly drives at the heart of the book. The story flows smoothly from one case to another and on to the end, and I love what the author has proposed for the next book's plot in the little promo. This is a voluntary review of an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books.
The story follows a young girl, Lolita, who is after a gang they believed was a witness killed in a corporation gym. Lora Sanchez takes care of Lolita while her father is away. The story is engrossing and the writing is very exciting. The story is suspenseful right to the end.
Interesting, well-developed characters. It was a good plot, but ended up with so many tangents it was hard to imagine it all getting solved, which didn't happen. Lots of stress on the main characters, and some not believable survivals.
