CHICKS ROCK! is a fun picture book about friendship, reaching for your dreams, and embracing your strengths. Rocker Chick loves to bawk'n'roll, and she dreams of one day being a rockstar. Before she knows it, she gets an invitation to headline a big wing-ding, and she is excited to perform. When she gets to the stage, she realizes that she is nervous. Luckily, she has brought along her crew, and they know what to do! Each chick uses their skills to help Rocker Chick put together the best show possible. When the big day arrives, she is again nervous, but with the reminder that she has the support of her friends, Rocker Chick heads out on stage and totally rocks!

What I loved: This was a really delightful story about friendship, support, and following your dreams. Told in rhyme, this was a story that rolled off the tongue and was so fun for children to listen to. The plot is really cute, and I appreciated all the chicken-related puns throughout that added to the giggles. The storyline contains a lot of great themes about understanding your strengths, helping your friends, the importance of support, and reaching for your goals. Rocker Chick's nervousness will be relatable to readers and also brings messages about how to deal with stage fright - support, preparedness, and a dose of a bravery.

The illustrations are full of colors, adorable characters, and great details that make for a really entertaining read. Combined with the rhyming text, this is a series I could definitely see going far.

Final verdict: A charming picture book, CHICKS ROCK! is a delightful story about friendship and reaching for your dreams with bright and detailed illustrations and rhyming text. Recommend for toddlers through elementary school aged readers.

Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.

Will Rocker Chick overcome her stage fright and manage to perform before her audience?

Some young readers -- and also older readers -- will thrill on every plot twist in this performer's triumph tale.

Will the literary experience be improved if you add buddy-buddy support, and cool dialog like this?

"Rocker Chick's a star!"
And "Thank you all -- you helped me reach my dream."

If you love books like this, you're the intended audience: FIVE STARS

PERSONALLY, THOUGH

I find performer plots tiresome. Even worse, I consider these stories distinctly unhelpful. Why squander your youthful idealism on being applauded?

Especially if you believe, like this feminist, that the purpose of life is not to strut your stuff and win applause.

ALSO...

Regarding the sentiment in this book that friends can help a person to overcome EVERY obstacle...

Not so. What if, for instance, a person aimed to help others -- really help them, not just entertain them?

Or a girl spent years learning technical knowledge that allowed her to invent something original?

And how about a female scientist who dedicated her career to working in STEM, making important discoveries? Even if not a single person co-worker told her, "You rock."

Sure, cliche lovers flock together. But does that guarantee they will create much more than repeated cliches? I doubt it.

I adore Chicks Rule and am thrilled to report that Chicks Rock is equally fabulous. A brilliant fun rhyming read aloud with adorable art. This story features rocker chick who loves to rock but struggles to find the courage to perform in front of a crowd. With themes of facing your fears and being there for your friends, I highly recommend everyone adds this to their home and classroom shelves! Please note that I was fortunate to receive an advanced reader copy of this beautiful new book in exchange for an honest review.

This bouncy, read-a-aloud rhymer, full of feathery puns and THE CUTEST chick characters will steal your heart. Bardhan-Quallen’s wordplay is, to borrow a line from Chicks Rock, “poultry in motion”. We follow young musician Rocker Chick, to a “wing-ding”, where she plans to “bawk and roll”. Her plans fall apart when she suffers stage fright, but her supportive “peeps” are there to pull her through, each using their own special talents to lift her up. An adorable story of girl power and teamwork! Highly recommend!

A rockin' story about facing your fears with the support of friends. Rocker Chick loves music, but when she finally gets the chance to perform for a crowd, she's frozen with stage fright. Luckily, she has a group of supportive peeps who are there for her, and they each use their special talents to boost her confidence. Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen's skilled wordplay and easy rhythm and rhyme make this a fun read-aloud. And Renee Kurilla's delightful illustrations contain many clever references that make them perfect for repeat viewings.

Stage fright is no joke! When Rocker Chick is called to headline a show, she's more than ready until her nerves kick in. Thank goodness for friends. Their confidence in Rocker Chick prompts the rockstar that she does have what it takes to perform. They help Rocker Chick reach her dream, but she's had it in her all along.

We all have fears an inhibitions. Chicks Rock shows with a little motivation and knowing good friends are in your corner, dreams are attainable.

Rocker Chick has big dreams of becoming a rock star, but when given the chance to rock out as the headliner for an upcoming barn "wing ding", Rocker Chick chickens out. The fear is real, but luckily so is the support of her peeps who show Rocker Chick she doesn't have to "wing it" alone. Together Bardhan-Quallen's fast-paced, spot-on rhyming text and Kurilla's delightful art create a rocking story of teamwork, friendship, and fortitude. A book kids will want read over and over.

Such a cute story! Rocker Chick can rock, but the stage definitely gives her a fright. When Rocker Chick gets nervous and can't perform, her friends all get together and use their strengths to help her. You can't go wrong when you have your chicks to help you through. The rhyme and quick pace make this a fun read aloud with a universal message: We're better together.

A rhyming story of a chick who likes to jam on her guitar but stage fright overtakes her and having a community to help build your confidence and get the chick out there to jam and perform. Nice rhyme and each chick works with her own strengths to build rocker chick out.
