I received this from the publisher and was immediately excited to visit some old friends from my childhood who were being branded for a new generation. Duck Tales was one of my favorites as a kid and I like the premise of a series of scary stories from them. The characters had a good and authentic feel but they also felt fresh for a new generation. The different fonts for different voices were hard to track. I liked the illustrations even if it was a little weird that they were in green only. Overall this is a cute new start of a middle grade series.

First sentence: The laboratory crackled and hissed as the light bulbs burned out one by one. Soon it would be completely dark except for the sparks shooting out from the torn wires. I could hear the mad scientist cackling over his loudspeaker. He bellowed in his evil voice. Don't even bother trying to run. You can't escape!

Premise/plot: Huey, Dewey, and Louie star in DUCKSCARES a new series by Tommy Greenwald. The three are selected for an exchange program and travel to Germany. It is in Germany where their misadventures begin. (Though they do make some cool new friends and have some fun adventures along the way.) But it is their experiences with a mad scientist (he doesn't advertise that he is mad or evil) that lead them into grave danger...for he has a master plot in mind...and no one is safe.

My thoughts: I enjoyed this one. I did grow up watching DuckTales here and there. Spooky, "eerie" reads aren't exactly my absolute favorite and best. But this one stays relatively light. Relatively. There's so much banter between Huey, Dewey, and Louie (all three narrate) that it isn't truly terrifying or scary. Plus since the book's characters are based on cartoon characters...it's hard to take the book *too* seriously. Overall, it's just a good dose of fun and games.

Een erg leuk kinderboek. Het heeft een leuke vertelvorm en verschillende lettertypes en kleuren. Zo hebben bepaalde personages een eigen kleur als ze wat door de verteller heen roepen, dat maakt het boek speels en grappig.

Ditmaal een verhaal over de neefjes met veel spanning en avontuur!


Ik vond de verhalen van de neefjes in de Club Donald Duck pockets al erg leuk dus ik was helemaal enthousiast toen ik zag dat er een echt boek uit zou komen met hele verhalen. En toen werd ik nog enthouasiaster toen ik zag dat het door Tommy Greenwald werd geschreven, hij is een schrijver die ik echt top vind.

In dit toffe boek met nieuwe illustraties door Elisa Ferrari winnnen de neefjes iets heel speciaals. Ze mogen op bezoek in verschillende landen en verschillende scholen. Ik lag helemaal dubbel toen een van de neefjes vroeg of er ook chocolade was in Duitsland en ze daar harder om juichten dan toen ze te horen kreeg dat ze gingen reizen. Haha. Priorities! Het eerste land is dus Duitsland en ik vond het het geweldig dat dat het eerste land was. En nog geweldiger toen er mysterieuze gebeurtenissen waren met speelgoed en hallucinaties. De neefjes hebben wel even een handje vol aan uitzoeken wat er aan de hand is en ook natuurlijk waarom. Ze hebben gelukkig een nieuwe vriendin die maar al te graag wilt helpen.

Ik vond het leuk dat het verhaal werd verteld door een van de neefjes met wat commentaar van de andere neefjes als er iets niet goed werd verteld of als ze het met hem eens waren of als ze commentaar hadden (zoals toen ze voor het eerst het meisje van het gastgezien zagen en een van hen meteen verliefd werd). Soms ietwat verwarrend, maar op een gegeven moment zat ik er helemaal in en had ik er geen last meer van. Ik vond het leuk dat ze, net als in de Club Donald Duck boeken ook kleurtjes gebruiken voor karakters zodat je meteen duidelijk heb wie aan het woord is.

Ik vond het verhaal erg spannend en leuk geschreven. De slechterik was heerlijk slecht en zijn plannen heerlijk maf al heeft hij het niet altijd helemaal goed gedaan (gegeven een makkelijke oplossing). De hallucinaties waren echt geweldig, nou ja, tenzij je er natuurlijk middenin zit, maar voor de buitenstaander, wow, dat je dat op zo’n manier kan meemaken.

Ik vond het wel apart dat de bal die ze steeds hadden geel/paars werd genoemd terwijl die kleur in mijn editie toch echt groen/paars is.

Toffe illustratiestijl. Normaal zijn de neefjes echt heel erg hetzelfde, maar hier zie je toch meer individuen. Top!

Ik kan niet wachten op het volgende deel. Aan de ene kant wil ik deze in het Nederlands blijven lezen… anderzijds wil ik ze ook in het Engels. Haha. Al moet ik daar dan weer erg wennen aan de namen van de neefjes, dus misschien blijf ik maar gewoon bij Nederlands. Ik zou het boek zeker aanraden, lekker spannend en vol avontuur met geweldige karakters.

I got this book right after the end of DuckTales left several duck-shaped holes in my heart, hoping that his would help fill the void. And it did! The character interactions are really good (especially in the beginning, when Donald is being world's best surrogate dad). But, the real selling point here is the art! The artist is very good at making all these ducks look squishy and huggable, which is the most important thing to nail down, and I really like the new designs they made for the nephews! And since there's illustrations on nearly every page, there's a lot for your eyes to marvel at.
I can't bring myself to rate this higher than a three, though. Again, story doesn't have much meat on its bones, and the constant change in fonts gets annoying after a while. But it's still fun enough for duck enthusiasts (and probably the middle schoolers this book is aimed at) to get a kick out of it.

Duckscares is a good book overall, with a good plot and good villain, as well as a good cliffhanger. If you like mystery then this book is good for you, of course, if you don’t mind the fact it’s for children. Some things that I didn’t find too appealing was the amount of typos. For a picture novel with less than 200 pages, it has a lot of typos. Also, the main triplets Huey, (red outfit) Louie, (green outfit) and Dewey, (blue outfit) often get mixed up. This can be best seen in their personalities and their relationship with Sophie. Huey is supposed to be more cautious and a know it all, though in this book he is extremely brave. Louie is supposed to be calm and level headed, however he seen to be more of a fraidy duck. Dewey is probably the best represented, a daring, somewhat cocky duck. And when it comes to Sophie, a friend of theirs, it is said that Huey has a crush on her, though sometimes Louie and Dewey say things that indicate they have a crush on her. A minute detail is that in this book, despite taking place in Europe, they call soccer soccer. Even the Europeans call it that. I will excuse this, however seeing as the author (and myself as a reader) is American. Over all, would recommend to children who enjoy these popular Disney characters and a little mystery.

een leuk verhaal waarin Kwik, Kwek en Kwak op reis gaan. ze winnen een reis waarin ze elke twee maanden een ander land bezoeken en ze beginnen in Duitsland. en natuurlijk komen ze in een groot avontuur terecht. spannend maar ook grappig. de combinatie van tekeningen en tekst is ook erg leuk. een aanrader voor jong en oud.
