read in therapy. ate down. my only quarrel is with the octopus. is he a student or teacher? he is big body built so i thought he was a teacher but then he sat with the students. i wonder what his parents look like
This is a sweet, starting school picture book told in rhyme. Playful and colorful illustrations depict animal characters. School is Cool will be a great choice to add to your back to school read aloud collection.
This is one of the better “it’s time for school” books I have read. I love the cadence and the rhyme. It flows really well and the message is pretty clear. Yes the first day of school can be scary, but there is so much fun to be had, that it’s sure to be a great time.
SCHOOL IS COOL! is a delightful picture book to celebrate all the cool things about school. Although the animals start off nervous about their first day of school, they quickly learn how awesome it is with so much to learn, new friends to make, and interesting new things to create.
What I loved: The illustrations are absolutely fantastic in the Moyles' usual style with bright, neon colors, adorable animals, and loads of fun details. These are complemented by the rhyming text that rolls off the tongue and manages to stay super-positive, even when talking about tough things like worrying if others will like you at school and leaving your parents for the day.
This is a great choice for children who will be attending school for the first time, as it offers these common worries while managing to stay positive and suggest that you look cool and parents will return in no time (and their love will stay with you all day). The majority of the book focuses on all the cool things you get to do at school, like recess, art, and learning new things. This positive and upbeat book highlights all the things that make school a fun place to be.
Final verdict: With rhyming text and fantastic illustrations, SCHOOL IS COOL! is a delightful picture book to help get children excited about starting school. Recommend for preschoolers and those starting kindergarten.
Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.
"You're chilling out./ Everything's cool/ But wait. / Tomorrow is the first day of school!" This jolly, enthusiastic picture book really captures those feelings of anxiety and nervousness as school approaches and what it will be like on that first day. Told in a rhyme, with a diverse group of anthropomorphic animals, Moyle begins with the unofficial start of school - the night before, worrying about fitting in, will the other kids like you, picking out what to wear, and followed by the official first day - getting to school, meeting new kids and the teacher. This is a happy, positive book that even reminds kids that feeling sad leaving mom is ok: "It can be sad to say goodbye./ But just you wait - the time will fly!/ The love you feel when you're at home/ will be with you wherever you roam." Later, it reminds readers that it is ok to make a mistake, after all, school is for learning. These are the kinds of reassurances that lots of kids need to hear. The digitally created illustrations are colorful and friendly, adding to the sense of reassurance the text imparts. I will definitely be sharing this with my young readers when we meet again in September.
Super cute story about the first day at school and not to be scared because school is awesome. It combats all the common fears a child might have before they start school and does it in a simple yet empowering way.
The illustrations are simple but adorable.
I love these parts:
(Getting to school) “Feel free to catch a shooting star” (reminds me of “the more you know“ and if that was the inspiration even more amazing).
(Being scared when dropped off at school) The love you feel when you’re at home will be with you wherever you roam”
(Getting the wrong answer) “It’s okay to say, “I don’t know.” Everyone is here to grow.”
“See, school is where your brain expands. It stretches like a rubber band. Reading, math, and exercise - they make you strong and super wise.”
This is a fun book about starting school and deals with some of the worries that kids may have, but doesn't really focus on that. It is a rhyming book and generally does a pretty good job of that though there were a couple of places I reread for cadence. The illustrations and amazing, fun, bright and will really gets kids' attention. It does do a great job going through what a day at school would look like and will help kids with the unknowns.
I didn't find anything particularly remarkable or unique about this "back to school" story but it would be a good read for young children who are preparing to go to school for the first time.
