Rate this book
Showcasing three decades of the magazine’s Women of the Year, 30 Years of Women Who Have Reshaped the World is a record of the ceiling-shattering achievements that have changed our world, and a manual for success for the women of today—and tomorrow.

Text by Glamour editor Anna Moeslein
Introduction by Glamour editor in chief Samantha Barry
Foreword by Yara Shahidi, NAACP Image Award–winning actress, Black-ish

For over 80 years, Glamour has been the preeminent female empowerment title in America. From its origin as the magazine “for the girl with a job” to today, strong, ambitious women have always taken center stage, and no place more so than at Glamour ’s annual Women of the Year Awards.

Launched in 1990, the annual awards have become a 30-year living, breathing history, mapping out the evolution of women’s power across the worlds of film, politics, sports, activism, and more. Many of the names are familiar. We’ve grown up with Billie Jean King, Madonna, Nora Ephron, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Titans of change like Michelle Obama and Malala Yousafzai have rocked our world in lasting ways. Stars such as Reese Witherspoon, Ava DuVernay, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o, and Ashley Graham have used their global influence to shift the needle in filmmaking, reproductive rights, criminal justice, and representation. Other names you may not know so well include women who have transformed the futures of school children in local communities, and teens who organized millions to fight against gun violence.

30 Years of Women Who Have Reshaped the World touches on some of the most culturally important moments of our history. Additionally, it includes original content from Shonda Rhimes, Diane von Furstenberg, Arianna Huffington, and more to inspire future generations. Most importantly, the book offers inspiration and service, reminding today’s women and girls that, in the words of 2015 Women of the Year honoree Reese Witherspoon, ambition is not a dirty word.

Glamour magazine until January 2019 had a major presence in the magazine world. For nearly eight decades beginning in the late 1930’s, it offered a different perspective of life for women readers. It did stop publication officially at least with its print edition, but it still flourishes in an online format.
It was in 1990 that the magazine created its Women of the Year awards. It became a popular feature as the magazine paid tribute to women who had made a difference. In this most impressive coffee table book, the book features the notable women who have made it to the prestigious level of Women of the Year.
It truly reads like a Who’s Who of the world around us. Women from every area of life and the world are notable inspirations, and the fact they are honored in such a glowing manner is definitely noteworthy. The three decades of women showcase women living, and those who have passed on. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was noted as a Woman of the Year in 1993 and 2012. Her impact on the legal world was legendary, and as Supreme Court judge was a champion for women’s rights.
The book is filled with dozens of women of note who have fought hard for causes and changed the world a little at a time. They were revolutionary in their gains for women of all ages, races, and even sizes. Plus size models Emme in 1997 and Ashley Graham in 2016 showed the world that people were not to be judged and stereotyped by size. It has changed the fashion world as never before with women of all body types embraced and given recognition.
The book is filled with so many women who have created a better world through their ideas and ideals. Such notables as Anita Hill, Viola Davis, Billie Jean King, Nora Ephron, Cher, Mind Kaling, Barbara Walters, Toni Morrison, The Women behind Black Lives Matter, Maya Angelou, Condoleeza Rice, Gloria Steinem, and The Sister Army that put USA gymnastics director Larry Nassar behind bars, are some of the truly inspiring women mentioned in the book.
This is truly a book to become a family keepsake to show to one’s children and grandchildren, offering hope and inspiration how people truly can make a difference for the positive.

I really wanted to love this book but it is too large and too heavy to enjoy. The pages do not open widely enough to read comfortably. I appreciated many of the women celebrated but some were curious choices and I'm sure some famous women felt left out. Coffee table books are good for some topics but not for short biographies of women and their achievements.
