Rate this book

It's hard to rate this collection of curated quotes from Nelson Mandela. It's exactly what it says on the tin here. I was definitely expecting more curation. Each "section" has a vague theme and then related quotes. The chosen quotes don't always make sense why they were picked but are interesting to read through anyway. Some more context was definitely needed for so many of the selections!

- the quotes are lovely - the thematic order is nauseating as it haphazardly throws quase unrelated quotes together - overall okay with is horrible editing and gathering

While I was searching for a book by an African author for the challenge Arsrc16, I found this book and I gave it a try but it wasn't a good idea.
The book is very disappointing: it's a list of sentences said by Mandela groupped by topic but often without context or totally irrelevant like He will be missed and memories cherished of him for a long time. Be strong. about Michael Jackson, and sometimes repeated like No organisation whose interests are identical with those of toiling masses will advocate conciliation to win its demands. that is in two chapters ("conciliation" and "struggle").
The only consolation is to discover that Mandela was like everyone: When I have no visitors over weekends, I remain the whole day in my pyjamas and eat samp.
When the book is over, you want to search for better books about Mandela.

This book of Mandela's quotations gives an insight into the great man. It is easy to start and stop and start again which makes it a good book to read between books of fiction.

My favourite quotes are:

"I only keep myself busy so that I can prove that although I'm a has-been, I've still got some work to do." Said in 2002, when he was 84 and busy as ever.

"Aids today in Africa is claiming more lives than the sum total of all wars, famines and floods and the ravages of such deadly diseases as malaria". Mandela's son, Makgatho, died of Aids at the age of 54.

"There are men and women chosen to bring happiness into the hearts of others - those are the real heroes."

"When we read we are able to travel to many places, meet many people and understand the world."

On George Bush, Mandela said "I am aware that he is surrounded by dinosaurs who offer him all sorts of advice."

"A society that does not value its older people denies its roots and endangers its future."

This book was an appropriate choice for 2014. Although he has passed over, Mandela's words will live on. Jennifer Crwys-Williams did a fabulous job compiling and editing the book.

Decent book, it is literally quotes from Nelson Mandela about different topics. I was wanting a biography, but this sated my appetite.
