Amy’s driving home with her family one day when they see a dog tied up off the road—all alone and deserted. The poor dog looks abused with tape over his muzzle. Instantly, they pull over and run to help the dog. It’s love at first sight for the girls who fall in love with Rover straight away. He appears to be a gentle dog, and the family wonders who could treat a dog so cruelly.
Amy knelt down beside the shepherd and scratched his neck. The dog panted and looked from Katie to Amy with his tongue lolling out, regarding them both. What a good dog, thought Amy. Strong, too, and brave.
Her parents agree to take him along in an attempt to get some help. After bringing him home, they begin to notice strange things happening. Amy realizes they may have made a mistake bringing Rover home, but Amy’s little sister, Katie, knows one thing: she’s not giving up on her favorite dog, even though he’s become quite the nightmare for everyone else in the family.
“I won’t let them send you away, Rover!” cried Katie.
This turned out to be a well-written, spine-chilling story. It has just the right amount of horror for middle graders without being too scary, but I have to say, there were some grotesque parts. The recommended reading age is 8-12, but it may be too much for very sensitive readers because it involves a possessed pet, which can be terrifying. If you have a younger reader who loves R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series or just scary stories in general, definitely give this one a shot.
I had a minor issue near the end because of the way the family handled something, but it turned out perfectly. You definitely have to keep in mind that this family is dealing with a demonized dog. My daughter was quickly looking online to see if there might be another book with that cliffhanger! I’m hopeful there will be too.
We all agreed with five-stars for this one.

Dit boek was zo veel beter dan dat ik verwacht had van een horror boek! Ik hou totaal niet van enge dingen, maar dit was precies creepy genoeg. Mega spannend en vlot geschreven. Al kan ik bepaalde honden niet meer op dezelfde manier aankijken…

This was a great read, even if a little freaky! Kept me on the edge of my seat, even gave me cold chills! And I love that ending, like he won’t rest till he returns!

That first line says it all. The good thing is, as a reader, you never get attached to Rover. He always seemed sinister and evil and I worried more about everyone else. The family pets (2 cats and a dog) survive, but I can’t say that about all the other animals in the book - just a warning. Rover is smart and powerful but he doesn’t growl or bite. He turns off electronic devices when he is hungry to try to get the humans to feed him or he causes a fire in the house when he gets angry. He attaches himself to the youngest daughter, Katie but develops animosity towards the rest of the family. As accidents and unexplained events pile up, the family realizes that Rover is not a simple, innocent dog… But, how can they get rid of a dog that finds ways to hurt them when they upset him?
I have to say, the explanation for Rover’s behavior is clever and I liked the characters. I was rooting for them to be safe and I was worried that Rover would seriously hurt them. The cover is perfect for the book and will certainly interest students.
This book reads like a scary movie. It is quick and a little over the top, but it will appeal to young horror fans (Goosebumps enthusiasts or readers of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark). It is rated for grades 3 and up, but we shelved it with our middle school horror books. It is fairly gruesome and scary, perfect for fans of horror movies like Insidious or The Conjuring series.

This is the Dutch edition of Red Rover and is a horror book for children aged from 10 years. As a kid I loved the Goosesbump - series by R.L. Stine and I was curious to read this new series.
I wasn't dissapointed. It was scary with enough suspense to make the readers just that little bit scared, but to read on. Through the book there was the red line of Amy and Rover: the animal lover and the possessed dog. I even liked the excorsist part with the dog. The story build up until the climax with the fire, the exorcisme, but the end was a bit predictive. But still, a great read for the Halloween period.

Zou jij een hond meenemen als je die in erbarmelijke omstandigheden langs de snelweg vindt? Persoonlijk zou ik daar niet eens over twijfelen. Want wie laat er überhaupt een hond langs de weg achter?
Precies wat Amy en haar zusje Katie ook dachten op weg naar huis. Het kost dan ook weinig moeite om hun ouders te overtuigen dat deze hond hier niet zo achtergelaten kan worden.
Wat ze echter niet meteen doorhebben, is dat de hond in kwestie heel bijzonder is. En dat niemand deze hond wil hebben…
Net als in ’Duisternis’, is de schrijfstijl van Christopher vlot, beeldend en dus boeiend. Hij begint eigenlijk vrijwel direct bij het onderwerp waar het verhaal om draait en verspilt geen energie aan de opbouw daar naartoe.
Voor een jeugdboek zeker fijn, want de spannendste momenten zijn natuurlijk die met de aanwezigheid van Rover de hond. En die spanning is vrijwel vanaf het begin aanwezig.
Amy heeft namelijk al vrij snel door dat er iets niet klopt. Ze heeft een gevoel van naderend onheil. Ondanks dat haar zusje Katie beste maatjes met hun nieuwe logee lijkt te zijn. En Rover overduidelijk ook gek op haar is.
Waar we in het boek ’Duisternis’ meer een buitenaards tintje ervoeren, voel je in dit boek vooral een echte horror vibe.
Want een kwaadaardige en zeer intelligente hond, is toch behoorlijk griezelig! Het gehele verhaal bevat dan ook een onderhuidse spanning die voelbaar is tot het einde van het boek.
De personages zijn voor een jeugdboek wat mij betreft prima uitgewerkt. Als volwassene had er van mij misschien iets meer achtergrond aanwezig mogen zijn, maar het was zeker niet storend.
De verhaallijn bevat enkele mythologische aspecten. En alhoewel die naar het einde toe zeker worden benoemd, hadden die wat mij betreft nog iets duidelijker toegelicht mogen worden.
Het einde van dit boek gaf mij een heerlijk naargeestig kippenvel gevoel ala R.L. Stine! En is er zeker eentje die je nog even fijn laat na huiveren.
Conclusie
Een hond zal nooit meer hetzelfde zijn na het lezen van dit boek.
En mocht ik een hond vinden langs de kant van de weg die er net zo uitziet als Rover, bel ik eerst wel naar de politie ;)
Christopher Krovatin heeft met ’Bloedhond’ een fijne en spannende jeugd thriller geschreven die zeker zorgt voor enkele uurtjes leesplezier en onderhuidse spanning.
De korte lessen mythologie mochten wat mij betreft iets beter uitgewerkt worden, maar waren zeker een mooie toevoeging.
Persoonlijk lag dit boek veel meer in mijn straatje dan ’Duisternis’ en ik vind het dan ook zeker een fijne toevoeging in de Horrorland serie!

Als Amy een achtergelaten hond langs de weg vind, dan weet ze meteen wat ze moet doen. De hond moet mee naar huis om zijn familie te zoeken. Maar zodra de hond hun huis binnenstapt, wilt hij niet meer weg. Ook gebeuren er gekke dingen: lampen gaan zelf aan en uit, voorwerpen bewegen en er gebeuren ongelukken.
Zou Rover de hond er iets mee te maken hebben?
Bloedhond is geschreven door Christopher Krovatin, hij schreef ook Duisternis en dat boek vond ik geweldig. Ik was benieuwd of Bloedhond ook zo in de smaak zou vallen.
Het verhaal leest makkelijk weg en door de korte hoofdstukken ga je er snel doorheen. De schrijfstijl is beeldend waardoor het lijkt alsof je er zelf bij bent. Er zit ook een goede dosis actie in het boek.
Amy is een prima personage om te volgen. Echter hadden de personages in het boek meer uitgewerkt mogen worden. Doordat het alleen maar over Rover gaat, leer je de rest minder goed kennen.
Tevens vond ik het antwoord rondom Rover een beetje tegenvallen. Dit had wat uitgebreider mogen zijn, iets meer diepgang.
Het einde van het boek vraagt om meer. Je blijft met een kleine cliffhanger achter. Mocht er een vervolg komen, dan ga ik deze zeker lezen!

The Tanners, a suburban nuclear family are returning from the shore when Amy, the eldest daughter, sees a dog stranded on the side of the road. A kind and gentle girl, she believes that she must help the dog and convinces her father to stop the car. Once Amy, her parents, and little sister (Katie), exit the vehicle what they find is dismal and cannot fathom why anyone would treat this beautiful animal in such a disgraceful manner. True bleeding hearts, the father and mother free the animal from its bindings, and it is remarkably friendly and grateful. It even gets--gives its name: Rover. Amy and Katie are enamored and beg their parents to let them keep Rover.
As Rover leads the Tanner family into the house, their pets, Stormy(a labradoodle) and Coop and Hutch (cats), go ballistic. They stay away from Rover. Most of the family members should be mindful of what they say to Katie and how they treat Rover because, as calm as Rover's demeanor is, he is much more than a well-behaved German Shepherd. It is not long before Amy not only realizes that something is wrong with Rover but also becomes the object of Rover's attack.
I sense Rover's presence. As I got to 'what' Rover possibly is, a storm suddenly passed through on this magnificently hot autumn day. Lights flickered. Was it just a trick of the eye? No. It happened again. Then, Miss Dola (a woman who can see animals of great power) tells Amy, "It's name is power, so let's not use it."
The closer I got to the end, the more the storm threw its wrath upon my home. Coincidence? Maybe. But based on what Rover can do, who knows? I closed the book, and the storm dissipated as if it never happened. Call it what you want, but I won't forget...nor will you.
Be careful about picking up that stray...

This was good in places but dragged a little in others.
Also, it was like, super dark? For a middle grade book?
A family of four is driving home one day when they come across a dog chained to a fence with his muzzle and taped shut and blindfolded. They rescue him and plan to bring him to a shelter, but when they do that the shelter gets all weird and hangs up on them.
So they keep him for a little while and he bonds with the youngest daughter Katie.
But then ish gets weird.
Rover is not your average dog. We spend much of the book figuring this part out, and then we spend the rest of the book trying to figure out how to get rid of him.
I will commend the horror part of this book. Those parts were done well. The characters were done well. I think really just my main complaint was that it felt dragged out and a little repetitive. Otherwise not bad.

Het is een goed geschreven boek dat past in de horrorland reeks. Voor mij was het boek het net niet. Net tecweinig spanning saai was het niet want het las wel lekker door. er zaten zeker ook mooie stukken in en herkenbare. Wat zou jij doen als je een hond vind? Of zou jij willen weten wat je dier denkt.

Deze past wel echt in een serie die “Horrorland” heet. Heel spannend!
En voor dierenliefhebbers zeker ook wel een heftig begin.

Als Amy een achtergelaten hond langs de kant van de weg ziet, vraagt ze haar vader om de auto meteen te stoppen. Ze probeert haar ouders ervan te overtuigen om hem tijdelijk in huis te nemen.
Maar zodra Rover het huis betreedt, gebeuren er vreemde dingen: voorwerpen bewegen, lichten flikkeren en er ontstaan rare ongelukken. Al gauw wordt duidelijk dat Rover niet zomaar een hond is, maar Amy's ergste nachtmerrie. Hij is kwaadaardig... Kan Amy ooit nog van hem af komen?
'Het was alsof ze in een droom zat, een vreselijke nachtmerrie vol bloed en horror en...'
Voor wie het nog niet weet: ik ben dol op griezelen. Het gevoel van adrenaline wat ervoor zorgt dat mijn hart nét iets sneller pompt en waardoor het bloed door mijn aderen raast. I love it. Dat is al zo sinds mijn jeugd en ik denk dat het altijd zo zal zijn. En precies dáárom ben ik zo enthousiast over de Horrorland-serie! Het zorgt ervoor dat ik weer heerlijk kan griezelen. Het maakt mij blij, blij dat de jeugd van nu óók weer fijn kan griezelen.
'Bloedhond' werd geschreven door Christopher Krovatin. Hij schreef eerder 'Duisternis'. Een verhaal met een paranormaal tintje. Een boek dat mij deed denken aan The X-Files.
In 'Bloedhond' volgen we Amy. Tijdens een autorit vanaf het strand naar huis ontdekt ze Rover en je voelt meteen dat er iets niet helemaal in de haak is. Er hangt iets mysterieus en onheilspellends in de lucht waar je net niet je vinger op kunt leggen. Maar je weet dat het niet iets goeds is...
Het verhaal leest soepel. Christopher is vlot in de pen en weet alles beeldend te omschrijven. Daarnaast zorgen de korte hoofdstukken ervoor dat je dit boek in sneltreinvaart uit hebt.
Het verhaal is spannend. Maar ik vond het jammer dat de personages nauwelijks uitgewerkt werden. Het was vooral het mysterie rondom Rover wat het podium kreeg. Wat niet storend was, maar ik had graag Amy beter willen leren kennen. Ook bleef ik met een aantal vragen achter.
Desondanks heeft dit verhaal álle elementen om te kunnen griezelen. Het is spannend, mysterieus en heeft ook dat paranormale tintje. Het paranormale tintje waardoor ik nu toch wel anders naar honden kijk. ***

Voor wie het nog niet weet: ik ben dol op griezelen. Het gevoel van adrenaline wat ervoor zorgt dat mijn hart nét iets sneller pompt en waardoor het bloed door mijn aderen raast. I love it. Dat is al zo sinds mijn jeugd en ik denk dat het altijd zo zal zijn. En precies dáárom ben ik zo enthousiast over de Horrorland-serie! Het zorgt ervoor dat ik weer heerlijk kan griezelen. Het maakt mij blij, blij dat de jeugd van nu óók weer fijn kan griezelen.
'Bloedhond' werd geschreven door Christopher Krovatin. Hij schreef eerder 'Duisternis'. Een verhaal met een paranormaal tintje. Een boek dat mij deed denken aan The X-Files.
In 'Bloedhond' volgen we Amy. Tijdens een autorit vanaf het strand naar huis ontdekt ze Rover en je voelt meteen dat er iets niet helemaal in de haak is. Er hangt iets mysterieus en onheilspellends in de lucht waar je net niet je vinger op kunt leggen. Maar je weet dat het niet iets goeds is...
Het verhaal leest soepel. Christopher is vlot in de pen en weet alles beeldend te omschrijven. Daarnaast zorgen de korte hoofdstukken ervoor dat je dit boek in sneltreinvaart uit hebt.
Het verhaal is spannend. Maar ik vond het jammer dat de personages nauwelijks uitgewerkt werden. Het was vooral het mysterie rondom Rover wat het podium kreeg. Wat niet storend was, maar ik had graag Amy beter willen leren kennen. Ook bleef ik met een aantal vragen achter.
Desondanks heeft dit verhaal álle elementen om te kunnen griezelen. Het is spannend, mysterieus en heeft ook dat paranormale tintje. Het paranormale tintje waardoor ik nu toch wel anders naar honden kijk. ***

Red Rover is about a family that is driving on the highway to get to their home when the oldest daughter (Amy) notices a black german shepherd (Rover) chained to a fence and blind folded on the side of the road. Amy convinces her dad to bring Rover with them until they find a shelter. When they’re at a rest stop the dad calls a vet to see if they can drop off Rover but when he calls the veterinarian lady hangs up when the dad tells them that Katie named the dog Rover. Amy is Katie’s sister and the main character. Amy is a nerd at heart and a responsible person. (Pg. 14) “But no, she was a science kid, a nerd at heart who’d never even thought about throwing a punch.” Katie is the youngest sister and the owner of Rover.
The theme is not everything is what it seems because Rover seemed like an abused, kind, gentle, and loving black german sheperd. If you do not want spoilers do not read the next sentence. Rover turned out to be a part of Cerberus, the evil three-headed dog that guards the gates of hell. (Pg. 191) “They say Hercules tore Cerberus into three different hounds, each more vicious than the last, and banished them throughout the earth.” The author made this a 3rd person view book. He also uses many pronouns in the book. (Pg. 47) “Just wait, said Amy. He’ll see. I’ll show him.” This was when her teacher thought her science fair project was dumb.
I think this book is good. I read it in about 3-4 hours and finished it. I think it deserves four stars because there wasn’t much detail on setting, the author told the place they were at. He didn’t tell what town or state. Other than that, it was a really good book.

Het vorige boek van Krovatin, dat ook binnen de Horrorlandserie hoort, heb ik ook gelezen. Dat vond ik tot nu toe een van de mindere boeken, vooral omdat het wat lang duurde voor er echt spanning in kwam en het erg sci-fi aandeed. Bloedhond startte ook traag op, men vindt een achtergelaten hond, vastgebonden en met een blinddoek voor. Vooral zielig voor de hond eigenlijk, je krijgt medelijden met het beest. Hij gaat mee naar huis en dan beginnen er langzaamaan steeds meer gekke dingen te gebeuren. Deze gekke dingen worden steeds gekker en nemen toe in proportie.
Je beleeft het verhaal vanuit het perspectief van Amy, en maakt hierdoor van dichtbij mee wat Rover allemaal doet. De hond heeft meteen een band met Katie en het gezin neemt de hond mee. Maar de hond blijkt geen gewone hond en al snel beseft Amy dat ze allemaal in gevaar zijn.
Bloedhond is een boek in de horrorlandserie, horror voor kinderen vanaf 10 jaar. Als je van dieren houdt is dit best een gruwelijk verhaal, maar wel goed opgebouwd en met een spannend einde.
Goed aan dit boek vond ik het tempo en de uitwerking van de horrorelementen. Vaak is het niet duidelijk waar het kwaad vandaan komt, in dit boek wordt wel naar een verklaring gezocht. Dus niet alleen horror, ook mysterie.
De dialogen vond ik minder soepel. Zo heeft Amy een vriendin en halverwege het boek gebruiken ze ineens het woord 'dude' tegen elkaar. Verder is er weinig eigenheid aan de personages, wat vooral jammer was bij vader en de vriendin van Amy.

Een heel spannend deel in de Horrorland serie, perfect als je op de camping in een tent zit. XD Ik heb enorm genoten en vond het lekker griezelig. Wat doe je als je een hond vindt... maar er zijn allerlei red flags? Wat als dingen steeds vreemder, enger, en bovenal, gevaarlijker worden? Ik vond de MC echt heel goed geschreven, alleen haar project.. tja, hoe dat mocht gebeuren, geen idee. XD Ik vond het wel dapper dat ze van alles probeerde en uiteindelijk ook haar ouders zover kreeg. Het werd steeds spannender. Al vond ik het wel een tikje hilarisch wie Rover echt was... Helaas ben ik niet helemaal blij met het einde. Al die moeite en dan vergeet je dat? Ik had liever gezien dat er een ander einde was.

I enjoyed reading this but I feel like we were left hanging with some very important questions:
1. Will we ever know what Rover was?
2. So, the last spell didn't work ... or did it?'
3. Where's Stormy!!??!!
And, most importantly (for this geek)
4. Who won the science fair??
I wanted more character development as well. I don't really love any of the characters and I think that added to the frustration with the many cliff hangers at the end. I wanted to connect with someone ... or some pet. The closest I got was to Stormy. Poor little thing.
I would love to see a second installment and I would read it ... just to see if there is some way to love one of the characters.

Another very quick read that I only finished in a few hours. I like that the concept was the opposite of a Man's best friend. I also really liked the ending that gave it like a little twist and made me just think "oh no, this poor family does not know what they're getting into." I also like the paranormal aspect of it. With the dog being most likely part of Cerberus in Greek mythology, I thought that was interesting. Katie, kind of got on my nerve towards the end where she jumped on Miss Dola during the ritual and I'm just thinking "what the heck Katie really."

The Tanner family find a German Shepard dog on the side of an abandoned road with his eyes and mouth taped shut. They free the dog and can't believe how obedient, kind, and gently he is. Somehow the name Rover pops into the younger sister's head so the family names him that. Scary look at a dog named Rover who starts out as a good dog but turns into a really bad dog. Quick read and would be good for reluctant readers as well.

Review written by Audrey for The Audrey Shelf: The reason I like this book is because it’s interesting, scary, and mysterious. It has some great twists and turns. It is about dogs, which I love. I also like it because it has a cool cover and there is a girl named Amy and she says dogs are her weak spots (same with me!) My favorite chapters are 15 - 26. I think this book will be a good choice to read for your child or you.

I’m settling on 2 stars because kudos to the author for making me feel the heebie jeebies and looking at my own dog with Rover etched in my brain. Goodness words are powerful. This book just isn’t a style I’d want to read constantly.
Kids may love this or be freaked by it.
Ending was too much like Jumanji.

Read with my kids, hoping for a bit more scary. Started out strong but sort of slowed down in the middle. Was an okay way to pass the time, but it wasn't all that memorable aside from the science fair. Would probably be enjoyed by middle school kids who don't mind a lottle gore.

My son and I loved this! He said it wasn’t too scary. “Perfect amount of scare - and no nightmares.” 😆
We couldn’t get enough and hope there’s a second one! We can’t wait to read more by Krovatin - he sure knows how to write an engaging story. Amazing!

Dark, twisted, and absolutely terrifying.
Man's best friend becomes man's worst enemy. Krovatin created a horrifying beast in this dark and scary tale about a stray dog that is picked up by a family. This has been on my TBR list since its release, and I'm so glad I finally read it.

I read and got this book like 2021? 2022? Somewhere around there, and it's awesome! Looking at this book, I immediately always remember what happens or main things like the conflict and etc. 10/10 in my most recommended books right now :D

This is kind of a mix between Goosebumps and a Mary Downing Hahn book. A good middle school book for kids who like "scary" but not really scary.
