Kinsley Sisters #1

Of Twisted Fates

Rate this book
Isabelle Kinsley set out to her first, and only, season of London in hopes of securing an advantageous match for herself and, consequently, providing more possibilities for her two younger sisters. The small pool of suitors in their seaside village of Bridlington offer very little in the way of suitable companionship. Isabelle quickly learns, however, that daughters of country physicians are not considered suitable for gentlemen of means. Discouraged, Isabelle believes a house-party invitation from Anna Somerville, a wealthy and accomplished friend, is her last providential hope—until she realizes the man she has come to care for is the desired match of her friend.

Simon Windham has spent the last two years of his life on a tour of Europe, in part hoping that Anna, the younger sister of his best friend, would finally find interest in a gentleman other than himself. He is not so fortunate, however. Upon arriving at Haven’s Landing, Simon immediately befriends Isabelle, the strange young woman he met in a London bookshop. Their connection is immediate, but to seek out her attention would be to not only betray long-time family friends, but his parents expectations as well.

As the month-long party draws to a close, Simon and Isabelle struggle to overcome their feelings for one another. Has fate thrown them together to secure their happiness or their misery in knowing their match would mean the unhappiness of others they love?

I enjoyed this one. Very proper and true to the times, I was surprised this held my attention so well. I was sorta prepared to not like it much. It was well written and very thought threw. The leading lady is a little all over the place at first and I couldn't find her till further into the book you start to understand why she is so shy, then outgoing, then obedient than disobedient. The romance was nice but I wanted a little more from these two, it all worked out in the end:}

I have been very busy lately as three of my kids have just started virtual school, and the other is young and very much needs my attention.

Thus, I haven't read very much lately. It hasn't been at the forefront of my mind at all since I rarely have enough time to just sit down and enjoy a good book.

Well, yesterday I made myself sit down and start reading Heather Chapman and Jo Perry's Of Twisted Fates so I could do this review.

Once I started, I could not stop. I started reading while my daughter was napping and my boys were doing school.

I had to cover my mouth multiple times to stifle what would have been loud, belly laughs. The book is simply hilarious because both of the main characters are quirky, funny people who love to tease and banter. And some people close to them are also witty and fun!

The book starts with Isabel and then moves to Simon. Every other chapter the storyteller swaps. It's so fun to read a novel from two characters' first-person perspectives. I loved both perspectives equally well.

The novel was very true to the Regency era, and though it has never been my favorite genre, I still loved the book because the story had a great mix of playfulness, introspection, romance (including a love triangle), letter-writing, convention and the desire to throw it to the wind, and more.

I found everything about the novel enjoyable, and I found the characters believable. As I said before, my absolutely favorite parts of the story were the ones where I held my belly, threw my head back, and just laughed. I think everyone needs a book that rejuvenates them through laughter.

Thank you for writing this delightful novel! I really look forward to following Juliet's and Charlotte's love stories in the novels to come!

I appreciate the chance to read an advance copy "Of Twisted Fates" by Heather Chapman and Jo Perry. This story was so sweet. The characters were fully fleshed out, including the protagonists, and the romance had my heart pounding. The setting was full of gorgeous details and I felt fully immersed in it. One of my favorite things is when there are real, strong obstacles that prevent two love interests from getting together—not just a misunderstanding that could be resolved in one conversation, and this book really had that. It created a tension that kept me turning pages and absorbed me to the end. It was such a sweet, lovely romance that will serve as a wonderful escape that we could all use right now!

Of Twisted Fates starts out strong. The meet cute is cute. The characters are entertaining. The thread of Fate is sweet. I do love a serendipitous relationship! I think the middle was a little harder for me to get through as it bogged down a bit, but the ending is lovely. I think I struggle with Anna's (the heroine's friend) role most. I've missed Heather's writing and am happy that she is releasing new material again!

This book was a delight. The characters are so well-realized, and they were people I wanted to spend time with. I laughed with their witty banter and felt for their struggles. And the gorgeous setting just enhanced that feeling of being present.

The romance swept you up in it, from the best bookshop meet-cute to fantastic chemistry and beyond.

All in all, this book was a lovely escape and exactly what I needed.

(I received an advance copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.)

I truly enjoyed this story! So excited that this is book one of the series as I am not ready for it to end yet. I loved the characters that we are introduced to in this story. I enjoyed seeing Simon and Isabelle’s friendship develops throughout the story and their interactions with each other were delightful to read. I loved that the story was told from both points of view. It was great being able to see what Isabelle and Simon each thought and felt as they interacted not just with each other but others in the story as well. The supporting characters for this story were wonderful as well. I would happily read about all of them again if they are ever given their own stories.

On another note, I was thoroughly intrigued by the song referred to and actually managed to find a version that is sung. I loved that this was included in the story as it adds to the overall feel of the novel being set during the Regency era and makes it feel authentic. I loved it and would happily recommend this story.
This is a clean and wholesome romance which I received an ARC from the authors, however this in no way influenced my opinion and I am under no obligation to leave a review.

I loved this cute-meet! It was so--cute.

This story is all about relationships. There were sibling relationships, friendship, parent to child, and romantic love.

There was a lot to like about the book. I found it quite enjoyable. So much so that I stayed up way too late to finish reading.

I loved the teasing banter between the main characters and how Isabelle's klutziness and all the other things she did wrong endeared her to Simon rather than turning him away from her.

I liked that even though Anna was thoughtless, selfish and a bit manipulative that she was also kind at heart especially to Isabelle and could eventually see her own folly. And I liked that Simon was still civil toward Anna instead of just cutting her. Even when he thought he was mean, I didn't think he was all that uncivil.

I liked that instead of having a scheming mother, Anna's mom knew her daughter was all wrong for
Simon and any scheming done actually went against Anna's plans. Refreshing change...

I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in this series.

Of Twisted Fates was just the kind of story we need in the world right now. It was fun, encouraging, empowering, and truly had some laugh out loud moments.

Isabelle goes into her first and possibly only season with the goal to make a match that will enable her sisters to make decent matches as well. It’s a lot of pressure and while she feels great obligation, she also cannot dismiss her own wants and needs. She makes a wonderful friend who has great connections and invites Isabelle to her house party over the summer. It is there she meets a ‘bookstore clerk’ who she cannot get out of her mind. But as fate would have it, her best friend Anna, also has her eyes on said ‘clerk’ and has for some time.

Friendship and trust are tested, and humility and pride have to find a balance. And if you aren’t dying of laughter through the horseback riding scene, you probably have no imagination.

Every book of Chapman’s gets better and better, and her heroes are always my favorite. Always the right amount of realistic and debonair.

I loved this book. Lots of wit, teasing and easy banter. I really liked Simon’s character. He berated himself for his ungentlemanly behavior a time or two but I think if I was in his position and I had to deal with a woman like Anna and I saw her as a sister figure that I would likely treat her in a brotherly way and give her a scathing speaking too as well. I didn’t like how Isabella was so accommodating to Anna’s feelings but I do recognize she was just trying to be a good friend. I wasn’t a fan of Anna despite the fact she was a kinder woman to Isabella then most in society was to Isabella. I certainly didn’t understand Elliot. I can understand his divided loyalty between Anna and Simon as one was his sister and the other his best friend. But what brother allows his friend to be put in such awkward circumstances without intervening more. Anyway, I really enjoyed the story and would love to see more like it.

Oh, my word, this book was so fantastic! Isabelle is a physician's daughter who prefers country walks to London ballrooms, but is excited when her new friend Anna invites her to a house party. Complications arise when the man Isabelle had a connection with in London is also a guest at the house party...and happens to be the same man Anna has set her sights on.

I loved Isabelle's character for her loyalty and desire for authenticity. Anna was more difficult to love but she did go through a character arc of her own. The romance and tension between Isabelle and Simon was so sweet and their meet cute was so much fun! There were several times I actually laughed out loud and I seriously could not put this book down!

If you enjoy regency romance with endearing characters, an engaging plot, and lots of swoony romance, this book is for you! I am so excited for the rest of the series!

I received a complimentary copy of this book but it in no way affected my review.

4.5 stars Great Witty Banter

This was a great regency romance and yet not centered on the rich high and mighty. The main character Isabelle is a normal young woman of modest background that is given a chance to for a season to make a match. When this is a bust she is graciously invited to a house party by her dear wealthy friend. That is when the fun starts.
It was easy to love both Isabelle and Simon. They had lots of sweet great moments. Funny witty banter is one of my favorite things to read and this had lots of it. I love that they became friends and just truly enjoyed one another’s company. Anna, wow, a real piece of work, she had a lot of growing up to do. But regardless of the impediments, in the end there was a supremely happy ending, which is what matters most to me.
So fun characters, you feel like everyone had an interesting story to tell and I look forward to reading more of them in this series.
Rating: G, clean, sweet.

Kudos to authors Heather Chapman and Jo Perry. This book is so delightful to read and so well written. It is impossible not to fall in love with the main characters Isabelle and Simon. The authors even put a positive light on the person that was coming between them. Isabelle and Simon's witty banter was delicious. It was fun and enjoyable to read. I was intrigued by the story from the very beginning. Each scene, each topic, each point of view smoothly segued from one to another. In the end I loved Simon's grandmother. She was so sweet and understood more that was going around her than people gave her credit for. She just was a victim of deep grief of the passing of her soulmate. Her gesture of love and approval gave Simon the encouragement he needed and the blessing of his parents that he desperately sought. All in all, a stirring, emotionally realistic clean romance. I do recommend it.

Isabelle is such a loyal friend. She begins her London season feeling very out of place and put on parade. When the season ends a dear friend anna invites her to a house party. things become very complicated when she develops feelings for the man her friend is set upon marrying!

Simon has no intention of marrying Anna. He can't be more clear and she won't take a hint. Then his heart is being lost to Anna's friend and he's out in an almost impossible situation. It doesn't help that he has been best friend's with Anna's older brother since childhood.

It's wonderful to see it all unfold! There are plenty of relatable awkward moments between main characters that made me laugh! And tender moments between an aging grandmother and her grandson.

The relationship between the two main characters felt real and plausible. It made me cheer for them, cry with them and really feel what they were feeling. I liked the juxtaposition of a male and female perspective. The romance was perfect and left me smiling.

I felt that all of the characters in the book were well written; I could imagine the situations, the conversations and the opinions that came from each person.

There were parts of the book that seemed unnecessary to the story and I often found the writing got in the way of itself (jumbled words and convoluted statements).

Totally unrelated sidenote but I don’t like the cover of the book because this is not how I imagined this main character at all (it makes her look snotty, pretentious and Unapproachable)

I thought the story did fairly well in keeping within the Regency time period with speech, customs & behaviors. There a few things or times in the story that stuck out to me "hmm, I'm not so sure that's fits the period". I'd say it was minor in the whole book though. First person pov is not my favorite but it didn't bother me this time around. It's a sweet story and we get to see the h H's pov. I thought there was good character development. The authors set the stage well of who the H & h are as people & how that came to be. I thought there were some good turn of phrases and descriptions. The ending felt sweet to me and was able to turn the dilemas & tension the h & H were experiencing successfully and nicely.

SETTING: Isabelle and Simon meet as a result of the connection each has to Anna Somerville —a sister-figure to Simon and a best friend to Isabelle. However, that very friendship is placed at risk when Anna’s feelings for Simon are not reciprocated, but it is Isabelle he is attracted to. How these three work through family expectations and differences in social standing make for a pleasing book.
CRITIQUE: The authors take the trope of friends falling for the same man and add interesting complications that hold the reader’s attention. Both the H and h are admirable characters, and Anna has the opportunity to mature as a person in this story. It is a clean story with a HEA, appropriate for all ages.

My best friends beau, what a situation to find yourself in. Especially when you are poor and lacking in social status and your friend has everything. Everything except the man of her dreams. He went so far as to your Europe for two years to escape her. Hoping she would mature enough to give up her childish infatuation. She did not. Now he is home and despite her having three offers for marriage, she still wants him. He has told her she is a friend and nothing more. She is spoiled and refuses to quit. She denies him the lady he is interested in.
Isabelle must be true to her wealthy friend Anna. The cost is high. She will likely be forced to marry a deplorable man much older to obtain the status needed for her younger sisters to marry well. She will hate him and believes he will be unkind.

The Sweet Twist of Fate

A wonderfully written and beautifully worded novel, delving into the strictures of social status and marriage contracts, conveying attraction and emotion to perfection.

Isabelle is willing to sacrifice love for a chance to marry a rich suitor, opening the way for her two younger sisters to make suitable matches for themselves.

Simon isn’t ready to settle down and provide grandchildren for his mama, or an heir of his own, and is intent on avoiding the marriage trap he knows she has had set for him these two years past.

But Fate has a way of dealing a hand that will outplay the best of card players.

‘Of Twisted Fates’ is a sweet, clean regency romance, suitable for young adult readers and up.

Heather Chapman proves again to be a powerhouse in the clean romance genre and each book just keeps getting better. Although co-authored with Jo Perry the voices were seamless. I loved the perspective of Simon and Isabelle! I only wished for a little more physical steam between the two but I’m probably in the wrong genre for that. The sisterly love between Isabelle and Juliet was so palpable even though they weren’t together for most of the book and I’m excited that this is the beginning of a series of Kinsley sisters.
The character of Anna was both frustrating and interesting and I find myself wondering her journey as well.

I loved this story. I loved the quirky things that made Isabelle, well, Isabelle. She knew where she came from and was contented. That is until she met Simon. Their connection was immediate, it was only a problem that her friend Anna was interested in him as well.

I love the books when the female lead is smart and when she is able to show that to those around her. I loved the friendship between the two girls.

I was able to quickly become absorbed in the story and found myself through it very quickly. I like it when a book offers me that kind of escape.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my review.

Heather Chapman and Jo Perry’s book, Of Twisted Fates, the first book in the Kinsley Sisters Series, is a great story that pulls you in from the very beginning. I really enjoyed the characters of Isabelle and Simon. They were engaging and interesting. Their families and friendships were important to them. They were both loyal and good. The twists and turns that led them to each other kept me reading and wondering if the ending would turn out well—which it did! This is a wonderful sweet and clean Regency era romance!

I received this as an ARC, thank you Jo Perry! While I love a good romance I think this is only my second Regency Romance. The best word I could use to described this book would be sweet. It's just a very sweet and wholesome book about a country girl falling for a man of means above her station. There are some humorous scenes as well which is fun. Simon and Isabelle are wonderful main characters who have good chemistry. The etiquette of the time period can be a little annoying for me but the fact that Isabelle was not the typical woman of that time helped. She was more fun and relaxing but still had good decorum to keep from being a total outcast. Overall sweet and fun!

Love despite their class destinations

I loved this book from the moment I opened it, to the very last page. I was spellbound by their love story despite the obstacles before them.

The description of Isabella’s home in a small seaside county had me transported there, with the wind blowing through my hair and the smell of the ocean. It was truely breathtaking. I had never read a book by this author duo team but I know it won’t be my last.

I received this as a complimentary from the author and I am giving my honest review voluntarily

I loved this book so much! The setting, the characters and the time period just fit so well together! The description of Isabelle's home near the sea just transported me there! I felt like I was in the book with the characters. I loved the main characters, Simon and Isabelle. I love the banter and teasing between them. I could really relate to Isabelle because she's so loyal to her loved ones. This book had me laughing and crying the whole time! Definitely a must read if you're looking for a good, wholesome romance!

I loved this book! One of my favorites from this author! The characters were witty and charming! One of my favorite things about Heather Chapman’s books are her relatable characters! They are imperfect and easy to relate to. I loved the imagery as well. The settings were beautifully described and made me feel like I was just another character in the book experiencing the places for the first time! The plot line is different from a lot of Historical Fiction that I’ve read. It was unique and so fun to read! I will definitely be picking this book up again soon! I highly recommend!

Heather Chapman and Jo Perry bring us a story that points out the “rules” of this era which are really hard to understand now. Although Simon doesn’t have a title, he has money. Isabella is the daughter of a country doctor. Thanks to Isabelle’s friendship with Anna, she is invited to her home for a house party following the season. There are many complications to a happily ever after but I have to give Simon credit for having more backbone than most young men of the times. I enjoyed this story.

I'm always looking for clean romances with good writing and characters, and Of Twisted Fates was exactly what I was looking for. I loved Isabelle and Simon's meeting and relationship, I loved the description of the homes and entertainment and all of the little details from that era. It was so stressful for me to think about Isabelle being perceived as not being from a good enough background, and I was relieved by the terrific ending.

(Thank goodness we don't have to live like that now and women have more options than to be paraded around as they try to catch a husband!)

Let me save you some time

This book would have been cute if it hadn't plodded along and been wrapped up in a neat now at the end.

Izzy is poor and friends rich and selfish Anna.
Izzy meets dashing stranger.
Dashing stranger turns out to be Annas' love interest and long time friend of family.
Anna selfishly attempts to force love on dashing stranger.
Dashing wants Izzy but his family doesn't approve until senile grams takes a liking to Izzy.
Neat now = Dashing and Izzy getting together in last chapter.
Ugh. Can someone write something new and mildly entertaining?

Great well developed main characters.
The side characters are not so carefully developed, but we learn aspects about them as the main character does, or as they are shown and discussed. That was well done too.
The dialogue and actions seem to fit the time.

The locations and clothing are barely described, just enough to get a feel for them.

Ah, and the romance... The whole story around it was amazing!
Well worth the read!
