On the 8th of November 2013, hurricane Haiyan floored homes and businesses, schools and churches. It swept away humans and animals, ships, and cars. Those left try to rise from the wreck. Cleaning, building, mourning. Each experience is unique, none more profound than others. These are the ones I remember.

Storm Serge is a historical autobiography written in the first person narrative.

I received the book today and attempted to take my time to savor the text, as I enjoyed the world I was transported too.

However, I continued reading until I was done.

I was able to imagine April's home in the Philippines and felt the love and care that she was surrounded by, amidst the suspense of tsunami, and hurricane Haiyan looming in the air.

It started with a dream and ended with a recollection. April does warn readers that "[h]uman memory is fallible, but emotions ring true."

With that said, I was expecting a choppy, and difficult reading journey; but was met with a stream of consciousness narrative voodoo that was vivid, clear, and smooth.

Her educational pursuit, and social media were used as narrative cues to identify time; and the details of her memory is incredible and definitely underplayed.

But the thing that makes Storm Surge addictive is it's narrator April. You can't help but fall in love with how transparent she is about continuing her self-discovery journey.

Finally, an author, who doesn't suddenly have everything figured out by the end of the book and who is still learning. I think her friend Noelle says it best, April is "very chill, and very agreeable".

This year I wanted to avoid buying physical books because I wanted use the library more, and save space.

But I'm really glad I own this one!

I do hope that April continues to write about things, because I will definitely read Storm Surge again and I can imagine reading this to my children one day.
