About the author

Humayun Ahmed (Bengali: হুমায়ূন আহমেদ; 13 November 1948 – 19 July 2012) was a Bangladeshi author, dramatist, screenwriter, playwright and filmmaker. He was the most famous and popular author, dramatist and filmmaker ever to grace the cultural world of Bangladesh since its independence in 1971. Dawn referred to him as the cultural legend of Bangladesh. Humayun started his journey to reach fame with the publication of his novel Nondito Noroke (In Blissful Hell) in 1972, which remains one of his most famous works. He wrote over 250 fiction and non-fiction books, all of which were bestsellers in Bangladesh, most of them were number one bestsellers of their respective years by a wide margin. In recognition to the works of Humayun, Times of India wrote, "Humayun was a custodian of the Bangladeshi literary culture whose contribution single-handedly shifted the capital of Bengali literature from Kolkata to Dhaka without any war or revolution." Ahmed's writing style was characterized as "Magic Realism." Sunil Gangopadhyay described him as the most popular writer in the Bengali language for a century and according to him, Ahmed was even more popular than Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Ahmed's books have been the top sellers at the Ekushey Book Fair during every years of the 1990s and 2000s.

Early life:
Humayun Ahmed was born in Mohongonj, Netrokona, but his village home is Kutubpur, Mymensingh, Bangladesh (then East Pakistan). His father, Faizur Rahman Ahmed, a police officer and writer, was killed by Pakistani military during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971, and his mother is Ayesha Foyez. Humayun's younger brother, Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, a university professor, is also a very popular author of mostly science fiction genre and Children's Literature. Another brother, Ahsan Habib, the editor of Unmad, a cartoon magazine, and one of the most famous Cartoonist in the country.

Education and Early Career:
Ahmed went to schools in Sylhet, Comilla, Chittagong, Dinajpur and Bogra as his father lived in different places upon official assignment. Ahmed passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1965. He stood second in the merit list in Rajshahi Education Board. He passed HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1967. He studied Chemistry in Dhaka University and earned BSc (Honors) and MSc with First Class distinction.

Upon graduation Ahmed joined Bangladesh Agricultural University as a lecturer. After six months he joined Dhaka University as a faculty of the Department of Chemistry. Later he attended North Dakota State University for his PhD studies. He grew his interest in Polymer Chemistry and earned his PhD in that subject. He returned to Bangladesh and resumed his teaching career in Dhaka University. In mid 1990s he left the faculty job to devote all his time to writing, playwright and film production.

Marriages and Personal Life:
In 1973, Humayun Ahmed married Gultekin. They had three daughters — Nova, Sheela, Bipasha and one son — Nuhash. In 2003 Humayun divorced Gultekin and married Meher Afroj Shaon in 2005. From the second marriage he had two sons — Nishad and Ninit.

Death:
In 2011 Ahmed had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. He died on 19 July 2012 at 11.20 PM BST at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He was buried in Nuhash Palli, his farm house.

কিছু কিছু বই সব সময়ের জন্য কারেন্টলি রিডিং লিস্টে রাখতে আসলেই ভালো লাগে৷ ইচ্ছা মত একটু একটু করে পড়া যেন লেখকের সত্বার সাথে নিজেকে জুড়ে নেওয়ার মতো। হোক সে প্রথবারের মত অথবা ২-৩ বারের মত রি-রিড।

বেড়ে ওঠার সময় গুলোতে হুমায়ূন আহমেদের বই গুলো শেষ করা৷ তবুও বার বার সময়ের সাথে নতুন করে যেন উপলব্ধি করতে পারি কিছু বই কে। হয়তো আগের তুলনায় এখন বেশি অনুভব করতে পারি নিজের চিন্তাধারা গুলো৷

সামনের বছর ও হয়তো এর বেতিক্রম হবে না৷ তবে আগে থেকে যা আভাস পাচ্ছি হয়তো ব্যাস্ততার জন্য বই পড়া কমতে পারে। সেক্ষেত্রে রি-রিড এর সংখ্যা বেশ কমবে৷ তবে কিছু কিছু ইট সাইজের বই কারেন্টলি রিডিং এ দীর্ঘ সময়ের জন্য যায়গা করে নিবে তা এখনই বুঝতে পারছি৷

ভুত প্রেত এ বিশ্বাস কোনোদিন ই করতাম না কিন্তু তারপরেও কিছু বিষয়ের অস্বাভাবিকতা নিয়ে মনের মধ্যে একটা খটকা থেকেই যেত। এই সিরিজ টি পড়ার পর বুঝতে পারলাম কত সহজ ঘটনা গুলোকে আমরা কত কঠিন ভাবে সাজাই। খুবই সহজ সাবলীল ঘটনা গুলকে সহজ ভাবে না দেখে আমরা তাকে মুড়িয়ে দেই রহস্যের চাদরে। এই সিরিজ টি পড়ে আর কিছু হোক আর না হোক প্রতিটি বিষয় যুক্তি দিয়ে ভাবতে শিখেছি, অলৌকিক বিষয় গুলোকে লৌকিকতা দিয়ে ভাঙতে শিখেছি। এটি হুমায়ুন আহমেদ স্যার এর লেখা অন্যতম একটি সিরিজ।

হুমায়ূন আহমেদ দিয়ে আমার বই পড়ার শুরু।
আমাদের ক্যাম্পাসটি ছোট এবং লাইব্রেরিও বেশ ছোট। সংগ্রহে কম বই থাকলেও কিছু ভালো বই ছিলো। একদিন হঠাৎ লাইব্রেরি ঘুরে দেখতে দেখতে হুমায়ূন আহমেদের বইয়ের সেল্ফে গেলাম। যথেষ্ট ভালো ভালো কিছু বই ছিলো হুমায়ূনের! (তাছাড়া তখন আমার বেশ খারাপ সময় যাচ্ছিলো বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় জীবনে। কি করবো ভাবতে ভাবতে সবরকম বিষণ্ণতা থেকে দূরে থাকতে বই পড়বো ভাবলাম, তখন থেকেই বই পড়ার শুরু)

শুরুতে কয়েকটি রোমান্টিক এবং মোটামুটি জনপ্রিয় কিছু দিয়ে শুরু করেছিলাম, যা নতুন পাঠক হিসেবে আমার বেশ ভালো লেগেছিল (যদিও বইগুলোর নাম মনে নেই)।
তবে, হুমায়ূনকে আসল চিনেছিলাম মিসির আলি দিয়ে।

ঐসব পড়া শেষ হওয়ার আবার ক্যাম্পাস লাইব্রেরিতে ১১৪৪ পৃষ্ঠার "মিসির আলি সমগ্র" হাতে নিলাম। তখনও মিসির আলিকে চিনতাম, কারণ এই চরিত্রের বেশ সুনাম ছিলো। ভাবলাম "পুরোটা হয়তো শেষ করতে পারবো না। যা পড়া যায় পড়বো তাহলে"। তারপর যে হাতে নিলাম, একটার পর একটা পড়তে আছি, পড়তেই আছি...

তারপর ১১৪৪ পৃষ্ঠার বইটা শেষ করে লাইব্রেরিতে জমা দিতে গেলাম, তারপর লাইব্রেরিয়ান সাহেব আমাকে জিজ্ঞেস করলো " তুমি এটা পুরোটা শেষ করলে?", আমি বললাম "জ্বি। একটানা পড়েছি শুধু"
তারপর হুমায়ূনের আরো অনেককিছু পড়েছি...

এভাবেই হুমায়ূনের বই দিয়েই আমার পাঠক হওয়ার শুরু।
যতই বই পড়ি না কেন, যতই হুমায়ূনের সমালোচনা করি না কেন, হুমায়ূন সবসময় আমার কাছে আলাদা একটা জায়গা নিয়ে থাকবে। উনি বুঝতেন পাঠক কি চান, আমাদের মধ্যবিত্ত দেশের মানুষ কিভাবে গল্প শুনতে চায়।

অবশ্যই আমাদের দেশে এক জিনিয়াসের জন্ম হয়েছে বলতে হয়। যেমন লিখেছেন তেমন বানিয়েছেন নাটক সিনামা।

হুমায়ুন আহমেদের সকল চরিত্রের মাঝে আমার মিসির আলিকে বেস্ট মনে হয়৷ সব মিলিয়ে মিসির আলির মতো চরিত্রকে নিয়ে যত বলব তত কম হবে। দারুণ আর অনবদ্য। লেখক মিসির আলির মাধ্যমে হলে�� হাজার বছর বেঁচে থাকবে পাঠকের হৃদয়ে। 🌸

দুঃখজনক হলেও সত্যি যে, মিসির আলি যতটা কদর পাওয়ার কথা আমরা যারা পাঠক তা হতে দেয় নি। হুমায়ুন আহমেদ জীবিত থাকা কালেই দুঃখ প্রকাশ করে গিয়েছেন। মিসির আলির পাঠক সংখ্যা যদি অন্যান্য রোমান্টিক উপন্যাসের ন্যায় অধিক সংখ্যক হতো হয়তো মিসির আলির গল্পের সংখ্যাও বাড়তো। আমরা হয়তো আরও ভালো কিছু সাসপেন্স থ্রিলার পেতাম।

যাহোক, মিসির আলি এমন একটি চরিত্র যা পাঠককে কোনো একটি ঘটনা বা বিষয়কে ক্রিটিক্যালি ভাবতে শেখায়। যে কোনো ঘটনার ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ডাইমেনশনাল দিক থাকে কিন্তু সঠিক দিকটি খুঁজে পেতে প্রয়োজন ক্রিটিক্যাল থিংকিং এবং পর্যবেক্ষণ ক্ষমতা যা মিসির আলির মধ্যে বিদ্যমান। এত এত রোমান্টিক উপন্যাসের ভিতরে তাই মিসির আলি স্বতন্ত্র। মিসির আলি আমাদের সমাজেরই সাধারণ একজন। তীক্ষ প্রত্যুতপন্নমতি সম্পন্ন একজন সাইকিয়াট্রিস্ট যিনি সমাজে ঘটে যাওয়া রহস্যময় ঘটনার বৈজ্ঞানিক বিশ্লেষণ করেন। তাই মিসির আলি এ দেশে প্রথিম অরিজিনাল সাইকোলজিকাল থ্রিলার উপন্যাস। এর ধারাবাহিকতায় আরও ভালো কিছু সাইকোলজিক্যাল থ্রিলার লেখক তৈরী হোক সেই প্রত্যাশা করি।

কিছু পাঠকদের মতামত নিয়ে আমার ভুল ধারণা হয়েছিল যে বইটির genre হল Psychological Thriller । কিন্তু বাস্তবে পড়ে দেখলাম বইটি Psychological Thriller র থেকে বেশি Magical Realism টাইপ। তথাকথিত " মিসির আলি Unsolved" ছাড়াও মনে হল অধিকাংশ case ই Unsolved. এই নিয়ে কোনো দ্বিমত নেই যে বইটি‌ একটি Masterpiece এবং লেখক একজন Genius, কিন্তু genreটি যেহেতু আমার একদম ভালো লাগে না , তাই বোধহয় বইটি আমার মনঃপুত হয়নি।

এই বইটিকে কম মান দেওয়ার কারন এক ভাবে মিসির আলি পড়তে একদম ভালো লাগে না, তাই এই বইটি কেনাই উচিত না। হঠাত একদিন একটা মিসির আলি পড়া যতটা ভাল লাগে, একদিনে ৩-৪ টা মিসির আলি পড়া ততটাই একঘেয়ে লাগতে পারে... অথচ এই বইয়ের বেশীরভাগ গল্পই অনন্য বা অসাধারণ...

Murder, mystery, the realm of the supernatural, nothing is beyond the enigmatic mind of Misir Ali, a professor who cracks paranormal cases in his leisure. A beloved figure introduced in modern literature by Humayun Ahmed.

My personal opinion is that Humayun Ahmed had a tremendous gift of storytelling, but he also rushed and patched up nonsensical stories to meet deadlines. This increased volumes under his name but also obscured many of his paramount works. Same goes for Misir Ali novels. Most of them have flimsy plots that leaves the reader unsatisfied. Some novels are downright horrible.

But then again, a few of them are magnificent. The depth, richness, and simplistic language used to deliver an incredible story, all adds up to show that Humayun Ahmed sir was indeed one of the best writers in modern Bangla literature.

Did not finish. I’m not into horror. Any kind of horror. Anything that gives me chills and makes it tough for me to sleep. I’m very easily scared xD and that’s basically the only reason I couldn’t read it. And I will not be reading it in near future. I’m simply not interested anymore. Maybe someday. But I didn’t like it. Anyways- will be returning it back to my library. Sad. I had a lot of hopes when I picked it up. Didn’t know that I’d be this scared.

2nd attempt- read 6 stories. I'm proud not gonna lie. But im scared too. I need a break really. But somewhere deep down I feel like I should've just speed-read the whole series. Then maybe I won't care by the end. However- this time I'm hopeful that there will be a third attempt. That might be today too xD cause it's like an addiction now. I'm scared but I wanna read. But really- as horror stories- they definitely do not deserve 3/4 stars. They deserve 5 stars. At least for me- cause most of them have me chills.

পাঠকের হাত ধরে তিনি নিয়ে গেছেন এক অন্য ভুবনের দোরগোড়ায়। যেখানে যুক্তি আর রহস্য পাশাপাশি হাঁটে, আলো-অন্ধকারের মাঝখানে দাঁড়িয়ে মানুষের মনই হয়ে ওঠে সবচেয়ে জটিল গোলকধাঁধা। ঘটনা গুলো তিনি এমন নিপুণ হাতে দাঁড় করিয়েছেন যে পড়া শেষ হওয়ার পরও সেই ঘোর কেটে যায় না। চরিত্র, প্রশ্ন, অনুচ্চারিত ভয় সবকিছুই হৃদয়ের ভেতর তন্দ্রার রেশের মতো থেকে যায়।

দীর্ঘ ধ্যানমগ্ন এ যাত্রায় সন্দেহ, নিঃসঙ্গতা, প্রজ্ঞা আর মানুষের গোপন অচেতন মনকে তিনি এমনভাবে রূপ দিয়েছেন যে আমরা পাঠকরাও তার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে অদৃশ্য অজানার দিকে তাকিয়ে থেকেছি। প্রিয় গল্পের জাদুকরের কলমের পরশে প্রতিটি রহস্য হয়ে ওঠেছে আরও গভীর, আরও রহস্যময়। তিনি শব্দ দিয়ে গড়েছেন চিন্তার নতুন আকাশ, এক অনন্য বৌদ্ধিক অভিজ্ঞতার মুখোমুখি দাঁড়া করিয়েছেন আমাদের।

মিসির আলীর চোখ দিয়ে পৃথিবীকে দেখার সেই ক্ষমতা, সেই তীক্ষ্ণ পর্যবেক্ষণ, সেই নিভৃত বেদনার সৌন্দর্য যে সবগুলো মিলিয়ে এই সমগ্র পাঠাভিজ্ঞতায় আমি যেন বারবার আটকে গিয়েও বারবার তবু ফিরে যেতে চাই।

ব্যক্তিগতভাবে মিসির আলি সমগ্র আমার unputdownable বলে মনে হয়। তবে কিছু কিছু গল্পের শেষে "শেষ হয়েও হইল না শেষ" -এর মতো অনুভূতি হয়।

হুমায়ূন আহমেদ স্যারের গল্পগুলো পড়লে মনে হয় যেন তিনি প্রত্যেকটি চরিত্রকে বলে দিয়েছেন, আজ তোমরা এই বিষয়ে নাটক করবে। আর তোমার নাম হবে অমুক, তোমার নাম অমুক। আজ তোমাদের কাজ এটুকুই।

কিছু কিছু চরিত্র আছে যেটা পড়লে মনে হয় সঞ্জীব চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের মামা সমগ্রের সেই বড়ো মামা অন্য অন্য কাহিনীতে অন্য অন্য চরিত্রের বেশ ধরে কথা বলছে।

আমার পড়া হুমায়ূন আহমেদের তৈরি প্রিয় চরিত্র
। লেখকের মতে মিসির আলি একজন অত্যন্ত বিচক্ষণ মানুষ , যিনি সর্বদা লজিকের মাধ্যমে চিন্তা করেন । অশরীরি বিষয়গুলোর ব্যাখ্যা তিনি যেভাবে দাড় করান, তা আসলেই আমাকে চমকে দেয় । মিসির আলির বেড়াছাড়া জীবনযাপন আমাকে আকর্ষণ করে । বইটি দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে পড়ার জন্যে অত্যন্ত ভালো একটি বই

সেই কোন কালে যেন পুফি দিয়ে শুরু, আজ অমীমাংসিত দিয়ে প্রথম পর্বটার সমাপ্তি~ আমার অগাধ বিশ্বাস সমগ্র ১ এর মত সমগ্র ২ এর প্রতিটা পৃষ্ঠা-ও আমাকে চুম্বকের মতই টেনে রাখবে। আপাততঃ মিসির আলির ও তাঁর স্রষ্টার প্রশংসা করতে করতে মস্তিষ্ককে একটু বিশ্রাম দিই...
