Phoebe Mitchell has been outshone by someone else’s star for her entire life. Whether it was her troubled father or her spunky friend Vi, she’s never been able to burn brighter than the people around her. After a near-fatal accident and change in family dynamics, she knows she’ll never be able to outshine her situation, either. The only person to ever see past her condition and make her feel like her life is more than a cautionary tale is her childhood best friend, Max. When new boy Graham enters her orbit, she finally begins to realize she might be able to glow a little brighter than the pressures around her. But as their relationship develops, she begins to wonder, will she be able to hold onto the people that ground her, or will gravity lose its effect and send her into orbit?
I wanna start this with a great reflexion about YA novels and why this one is great: THANK YOU FOR NOT ROMANTICIZING ABUSIVE GUYS WHO THINK THEY CAN IGNORE A NO (on anything, not just sex, if someone says no it is no). AS IT SHOULD.
Now I will go on with my review. So here’s a thing: I’m 21, but I’m still in for all YA contemporary fiction and teenage romance, because everybody can learn something about them. Of all the Stars is not only a great written novel, whose author (Ally) has made a great job on realistic references and a great story where parents actually EXIST. And not just crazy parties and sex all the time (not that sex is bad, at all).
So there are many reasons why OATS is amazing and one of the best YA novels I’ve ever read, the main one is about how well the PTSD topic is explored in the story, and how it doesn’t only affects the main character but the people around her. I love to see and explore more about the other characters too, and the fact that their story is so well inserted without seeming like filling is great for me.
Now, onto the main characters: -Phoebe: I adore her, she is literally everything I had ever wanted in a character dealing with PTSD (I’m looking at you, Solitaire). But she's not the cliché main character, and I've known a lot of those. -Max: HE MA BOY, my favorite character in this BOOK -Vi: She’s so cute and a great friend, even being as she is, she never stops worrying about Phoebe and her other friends. -Lunch table guys in general: all great, love them all.
The romance in this book is just so pure I adore it.
I’ve read a lot of coming of age and YA contemporary fiction in my short life, but I have come to the conclusion that this one has to be one of the very best. Please, read this book, go get it now. It might seem kinda long, but WORTH IT.
PS: The stars, constellations and Greek mythology references are a great part of this book, and that just makes it BETTER.
SWOON!!!! If i could give this 100 stars! Of All The Stars is an AMAZING young love story that will keep you smiling till the end. The emotions the characters pull from each other & you are indescribable!! I promised not to spoil anything about this book & it's truly killing me that i can't!! I will say that i will be looking for more of Ally B & can not wait to see what she has in store. ~I was given an ARC copy of this book~
I should start off by saying that this is a YA book. I can’t even remember the last time I read a YA book, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this one. I was pleasantly surprised to discover a beautifully written, engaging, intelligent, coming of age story, with the perfect ending.
This novel takes you on quite the journey, as it’s main character, sixteen year old Phoebe Mitchell, navigates high school, her family dynamics, friendships, PTSD and first love. And what a journey it is. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but I will say, it was a nice change of pace reading this one. The love story was pure and sweet. The characters were likable and well developed and the storytelling as a whole, was intricate, innovative and fresh.
Of All The Stars is the debut novel from new author Ally B, who like her main character in this story is only sixteen years old. Ally brought this multidimensional story to life. I can see this young author delivering many more novels in her future and I look forward to reading them.
I was given an ARC copy of this novel in return for an honest review. (Rainey Day Book Reviews)
This was a really cute read, and while YA is not my jam, I found this one melted my heart just a little. I loved the star references and actually found myself engrossed in learning about the night sky above us, something that hasn't given me much thought before.
Kids lingo will forever confuse me and despite the "teen voice" this brought me back to my days in high school where you are navigating friendships and relationships.
Phoebe and Max were best friends, they have been joined at the hip ever since they became neighbours and their relationship was truly beautiful. The only people that couldn't see they belonged together were Max and Phoebe themselves. It takes a little jealousy to get these two moving and when they finally do it is magical. I wish we had a little more at the end of them as a couple, but I am hoping that we see that in later books as I am sure this author could write some more centered around the other characters in this book.
The relationship Phoebe had with her dad broke my heart and reduced me to tears, and for a first-time author to do that, especially at the age of 16 is outstanding.
For a new writer, Ally B shows great promise and once she has her pacing nailed down, will be a force to be reckoned with. A great read from a first-time author.
I loved this. So sweet and such a perfect YA/NA romance!! I was so intrigued with all the characters and their personalities I didn't want to stop reading. I felt like I was there which made it a perfect escape for me. My favorite thing when reading is looking up and realizing I was so lost in the world that a few hours have gone by. Great book!!
I’m not a fan of YA. So I read this with an open mind. This was a very sweet story. It tells the tale of a young girl in HS. She has a best friend Max. Lots of friends. The ending was the sweetest I’ve read in a while. The author is 16! Looking forward to reading more from her.
Reading a YA book is a first for me but I enjoyed it. This is quite a long book and there wasn’t a lot happened for quite a lot of it while the author was building up the characters and letting us get to know them all. The ending made me smile and I’d like to know more about Max, Pheobe and their friends and how their relationships progress.
Of All The Stars is about sixteen year old, Phoebe Mitchell. She’s been through a lot in her short life, she’s used to her place in the life she leads and she’s discovered her passion and destiny lies in astronomy. She has a best friend Max, he’s the one person she can rely on, the one person in her life she tells everything too. Then a new boy comes to school, Graham, and shows interest in her. Graham moving into her orbit starts to change everything. Phoebe doesn’t believe it but she really is the most beautiful star in the universe to someone else.
This is a first for me, reading a YA, but I did enjoy it.
The character building was really good, centred around Phoebe, her best friend Max (I’m sure there’s a story of its own there) and their friends and a really good ending.
For a 16yo first time author, she killed it - well done Ally B
I loved this story, it was full of all the excitement, anxiety and uncertainty that makes a brilliant YA adventure It was a beautiful read that ended perfectly, leaving you wanting for more.
I'm not big on YA romance, but mostly because YA books often aren't YA related. But Miss Ally B knocked it out of the park with this book. This book is relatable, it handles difficult subject matters and does so in such a way that I wanted to keep reading this story. I loved that this book had family involvement.
Ally B. is an enormously talented young lady. I loved this story from start to finish. I'm so excited to see this young lady grow as an author. I loved getting lost in her words. I can't wait to see what's to come.
This is a book that I will tell EVERYONE they HAVE to read it! It is such a beautiful and exciting story. This is one of the very few books that I will be rereading over and over again. The author is so talented and I can't wait to see what else she does!
This was the contemporary teen romance I needed. Finally a book that accurately portrays teens because it is written by one! My only complaint is how many times the main character brings up the fact that she’s wearing “white nike Air Force ones”
