Mr. Kilpatrick, the big, warmhearted policeman, had seen Betsy and her friends safely across the school crossing ever since the first grade. When the news spread that Mr. Kilpatrick was going to be transferred, they were heartbroken.
Carolyn Haywood was an American writer and illustrator from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She wrote 47 children's books, most notably the series under the "Eddie" and "Betsy" titles.
This was a fun one! Maybe because it has a bit of Ireland in it and the children who come stay with Mr. Kilpatrick are from Cork (where I lived for a few months).
Ages: 4 - 9 Reading Level: 1st - 3rd grades
Content Considerations: there is frequent mentions of fairies, leprechauns, pucas and banshees (and an illustration of a witch. Halloween is celebrated and people are in costume.

With each review, I provide Content Considerations, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

I have been looking for these books everywhere and I am so glad to have finally found them! While my friends in elementary school were always checking out the more "popular" books in the library, I found myself coming back to this series again and again. I'm pretty sure I read every book in the series at least twice! I'm a little perturbed to discover that they've been re-released with a more modern cover, because I actually prefer the vintage look. Brings back so many memories and should I stumble across these somewhere, I may just have to read them again!
This one had a lot of moment that made me kinda chuckle, I don't know if that was entirely the point but it's nice to find humor in these really old books. 70ish years old but don't feel TOO dated. I've read this whole series through this one to my (now) 8 year old and he likes them too.
I liked it. Mr. Kilpatrick is going to get promoted so he won't be at the crossing guard anymore. They are going to give him a present. They're going to give him a kid as a present, but then they didn't because 6 of his nieces and nephews are coming to his house because their house burned down. Mrs. Kilpatrick becomes the crossing guard.
