I was lucky enough to read this spectacular book before release!

Dawnstar is the second book in the Starchaser Saga, where we continue to follow the journey of Cistine, the Princess of Talheim who is on a journey of perseverance and self-discovery. After a negotiation gone bad, she returns to the cabal without her beloved Warden, Ashe, who was captured in the fight to escape. Now, Cistine must continue her combat training while also learning the ins and outs of what it truly means to lead and how to listen to your heart when you need to discover that the life you planned may not be the life you were meant to lead.

As the Princess struggles, we also get a new POV, following Asheila, aka Ashe. She is taken prisoner by the ruthless Valgardian Chancellor and brought to the Blood Hive, a barbaric arena where prisoners are pitted against each other to fight to the death for the amusement of others. All Ashe wants to do is escape, get back to her princess and get revenge on the man who ruined Cistine's life: High Tribune Thorne. With untrustworthy allies and unlikely new friends, Ashe is about to fight for her life in a way she never expected to.

What can I say about this book! It has absolutely everything you would want in a sequel and more. There is heart-pumping action, slow burning romance that makes you want to drool, a found family you wish you could join, and bonds that are forged through fire and completely unbreakable. Renee Dugan has created a cast of character that is impossible not to fall in love with, even the villains you love to hate she has crafted them so perfectly. The story line, mixed with the lush world-building, flows together perfectly so you never want to put it down. Before you know it, you have been transported to a new world, a place you will be begging to return to.

As you enter the world of Valgard, you learn that first impressions mean nothing, strength from within is just as powerful as physical strength, attraction is undeniable even if when you try to wish it away, and bonds can be difficult to form, but unbreakable once they are complete. Follow the journey, its an adventure you never knew you needed until you experience it for yourself.

I can’t put it any other way: I love this book. And this series. Book two did not disappoint. The slow burn romance is killing me. I’m going crazy.

It’s safe for me to say Renee Dugan is my new insta-buy author. She could write a phone book. I’d buy it. On preorder. Without shame.

This book was a fun challenge to write and remains one of the installments I'm most proud of in the series - full of mystery, adventure, friendship, gladiator-battles, and slow-burn romance 🥰🥰

Oh my god, where to even begin? The ending of this book absolutely broke my heart, but I'm so thrilled to see where Renee takes the journey from here.

Cistine continues to impress me and is definitely one of my favourite protagonists ever. She's soft and sweet, but still so strong, she continues to learn and to grow as a character and I'm slightly afraid for what's coming in the next book! The revelation of what Cistine was also took me by surprise, but tied in so well to the overall plot.

The major death I was so sad about, but I also sort of anticipated. I had the feeling that's how things would end for this character and although I'm devastated about it, I definitely know there's solid logic behind the death.

I can't wait for more!

So much pain, so much love, still absolutely incredible.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think I've ever loved characters more than I love these ones. This book made me laugh, tear up, gape and get all giggly.

The LOVE I have for the brotherly dynamic between Quill, Maleck and Cistine... It's unmeasured. I squealed everytime Maleck hugged her or Quill play fought with her.

Honestly the skill in this writing is amazing. I adore how Renee writes body language. She doesn't just say where someone sits, she tells us everything about how a character exists, and it just builds such a vivid and real picture.

The dual perspective of Ashe in this book was brilliant as well. Yes it was frustrating because we the reader knew so much that she didn't, and that caused some issues for her, but her actions were understandable and it was great to see her being awesome outside of her role as Warden.

My respect for Ariadne grew in this book, as we saw a lot more of her, and the gritty portrayal of some serious issues and flaws that these characters have lived through just wrenched my heart.

These books are so easy to fly through which is great but also terrible because I never want them to end.

I received an early copy of this book and am horrible because I'm just now finishing it and leaving my review, BUT, ladies and gents, the fabulous Renee Dugan has done it again! I'm going to keep this short and sweet to avoid spoilers, but this book is pure magic from start to finish and I cannot gush about it enough. From her storytelling to her world building to her characters. (UGH, THE CHARACTERS, GUYS) this story is just amazing!!! If you haven't picked up Darkwind yet, I highly recommend you do so as soon as possible. And if you ever need someone to gush over the story with...*waves* because GODS, it's so magical. Do yourself a favor and pick up this series, friends!! :D

I was waiting to write a review until I could do this book justice, but I just don't think I'll ever be able to. There isn't a thing about this book I didn't like. I love all the characters' arcs, the world they live in, and the beautiful, lyrical prose. This series is a work of literary genius and needs to be celebrated the world over. It has imprinted itself upon my heart, and I can't wait to continue the journey.

Yeah so this book... THIS BOOK is a whirlwind of magical emotions, both joyful wonders and pits of despair (lots of pits of despair lol!) Why? Because you love them. You love them all. Every character has a purpose, a fate, something relatable that makes them important and special not just to the story, but to YOU.

I received this book free for an honest review and I’m giving it five stars because it’s breathtaking and clever from start to finish. Dugan has such a phenomenal handle on words and story and especially unique characters. I love that Thorne is a strong leader who has no qualms about giving Cistine the credit and authority she deserves. I love that Quill always has a smart comeback, Tatiana feigns brokenness until her true nature is tugged out, Ariadne finds strength in the ashes, Maleck is a teddy bear tank in all the ways, Ashe always knows what she’s made of, Julian never loses his sense of duty even when he wants to act selfishly... I could go on even about the more minor characters. I could go on about how every event from the last book meant something in this one. How the world building is so dang advanced it’s hard to come back to reality.

Some moments really stuck out. Any Thornestine scene just, I mean, I basically read the book for those, they are my favorite! Even the epilogue made my heart swell. I’m so heartbroken I have to leave the story here!

And I. Love. Cistine. Sooooo much. Her changes so far are incredible. Her power, how she’s come to believe in herself, how she is an emotional pillar of strength for everyone else. Her love most of all! She can be a dense little thing but her growth is natural and obvious and beautiful! Can I be her when I grow up?

I am a forever fan of this series and Renee Dugan. She knows what’s up and we should all be here for it.

Well, I loved the first book and this one did not let me down! I loved returning to the characters and seeing Cistine navigate her challenges and friendships/relationships. I love reading her try to be as successful as possible but also struggle with her identity/sense of self, and I also love how she uses her intelligence to seriously be one badass heroine. Ashe was also just such an inspiration. She fights so hard and is so strong and my heart was aching for her and I was so worried for her! By the time I got to the ending, I was so attached to Cistine, Ashe, and the others that I just did not want it to end. Beyond the main characters, all the characters felt layered even if they were explored with less depth, and they still felt real. I love that in books. This book ends with a cliffhanger so beware, but thank goodness the next book (Nightwing) is already out (and available on Kindle...although I love paperbacks, I am so low on cash as a high school student that kindles have been my go to). Anyway, this book was amazing, even better than the first, and I am SO excited for number 3. Consensus: 5/5

Gosh, this series is very good, and so well written! I did say how much this series reminded me of ACoTaR, and I’m realizing, there really is nothing wrong with it 😂 I mean I’m falling in love with this story and the characters because they remind of ACoTaR, but it’s also it’s own story and the characters are all unique, and I LOVE them all! Especially Quill! Gosh I love him 😍

I don’t want to spoil anything since this is a sequel, but some takeaways from the second book:

Cistine continues to grow so much and learn how she can be an even better queen based off the experiences she’s gone through with Thorne and his people.

I love found families, and this group is no exception.

I love Ashe and loved reading about her in this book, even though I’m very disappointed in her, but this series really focuses on those who have made mistakes, and how you can learn from them, and how others can learn to be forgiving.

I still can’t stand Julian 🙈 I’m sorry to those who may love him, but he’s just too controlling in my opinion.

The action, and the romance is so good! Such a slow burn romance that just drives me crazy!

Also, I would like to know when Cistine may think it’s a good idea to, I dunno, write to her parents to at least let them know she’s alive and okay 😂

And that ending! 😫😫😫 I love me some amazing cliffhangers, but I will be reading the next book stat!

First off, if I could give this book a high rating I would. Second, I ran to my computer immediately after finishing this book because I just had to write a review on this book while it was still fresh in my mind. In my review of the first book, I remarked on the humanity of Cistine and Julian's relationship but honestly I liked Cistine and Thorne together better but I was afraid to say that and now I can easily say that Cistine and Julian are not at all suited for each other. Julian constantly underminds Cistine's authority and is toxic for her. (Thank you Renee for giving Cistine a love interest that was not the first guy she meets.) You almost made me cry and I appreciate that you were able to write such a compelling death. This book was so good and it was definitely worth waiting weeks to get! I love how you are naming the books after the characters' names. It is so genius! Cistine's continued character development was absolutely delightful to read and she is a wonderful role model! Tati's drinking problem (and her overcoming it) was a wonderful addition in the book that I feel really enhanced her character. Honestly, the whole cabel was fantastically developed and the reveal at the end was astonishing and such a great cliff hanger! Renee, you once again wrote a fabulous book that makes me so upset that I don't have the next one right now (it has been ordered though). I can't wait to see what you do next! Lots of love!

This book swept me away and took my wild heart with it.

An amazing continuation from book 1 (Darkwind). We are immediately swept back into this lush world that only grows in detail and character. Torn between two different experiences throughout the whole book that interweave in twists and turns, I found myself falling in love with new characters and old ones alike.

If you love Princesses who embrace the Queen within them, slow burning (and heart wrenching) romance, families you choose, fighting for the underdog and well-rounded flawed characters you will love this adventure. But be fair warned, it will take your heart.

2024 Reread: I love that even though I know exactly what is going to happen, I’m STILL so invested in the story and can’t put it down. ❤️

I loved this book!! Sooo much action, heart stopping moments, and the best slowww burn romance. I love every single member of the cabal—seriously one of the best found family series I’ve read so far. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Well, shoot. Come back later when I’ve recovered...

Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I was not emotionally prepared to be this invested in a set of characters. It got to the point where I was highlighting not just prose that moved me but key points of heart-swelling moments of friendship between sooooo many characters. When does that happen?! How often does an entire cabal steal your heart and make you hang on to their every move?

I am anxiously awaiting the fate if multiple ships, not only romantic but of the friend variety. And, honestly, the friendships take precedence in my heart. It is so beautiful and so pure. But also layered, complex and believable in that the characters work at these relationships and nothing is ever perfect. They’ve all gathered to get through this thing called life and they’ve elected to do it together.

I realize that tells you NOTHING about the book itself or the plot therein...but I don’t care. Read it yourself already! Seriously, what is taking you so long?!

Besides, I don’t have time to fill you in. I’ve got to get on to the next book, STAT! Hang on I’m coming Cistine! & Thorne & Mal & Quill & Ari & Tati & ..... (def need that on shirt)

Also LOVED Ashe’s heart wrenching, gut-turning storyline and the new characters we met. Again Gahhhhhhhhh

I was lucky enough to receive and ARC of this book, and let me tell you, this is a book you will want to get your hands on! Dawnstar is an absolute roller coaster of an adventure with wild twists and turns that’ll leave your heart beating. Reeling from the events in Darkwind, the characters are thrust into different events that will shape who they are in the world. Cistine is constantly being tested and these trials will turn her into the queen she is supposed to be. You know you’re reading an amazing story when you’re constantly rooting for not only the protagonist, but most of the main characters as well. Dugan does an incredible job crafting her characters in different ways to create a bundle of deep, fleshed out people with strengths and flaws that will have any reader wanting to be their friend. The stunning descriptions will place you in a thrilling fantasy world experiencing slow burn romances and gripping fights that will leave you wanting more with each page. All I have to say is, WHEN DOES THE NEXT BOOK COME OUT?!

WOW. That's all I can say. This book was EVERYTHING!! I started it at a slower pace but quickly devoured this book as the plot and characters drew me in. There were so many twists and turns that I didn't expect, character deaths I mourned for, action scenes I held my breath during, and the ups and downs of romance that pulled at my heart. Renee's writing is a DREAM and I absolutely adore this series. I tore through this book while struggling to read some traditionally published books. Renee and her stories are LEGIT. Okay, enough reviewing, time to dive into book 3!!

I haven’t felt this excited about a series in a long time, truly. I love these characters so much. I love the plot so much, even though my heart broke multiple times during this story (legit cried twice and I don’t typically cry a lot in books). Absolutely loved the new POV introduced and hoping for more! Renee is just such a brilliant writer that I get lost in the world in the best way AKA stayed up til 130 am reading.
Very, very excited to keep reading. Again, if you are looking for a fantasy series - this. is. it!

It was written in such an amazing way, so much stuff happening, in best way possible!

I can't wait for book 3. I NEED to know what is happening with Cabal and everyone!

This is a great book, filled with lots of world building and excellent action scenes. 4.5 stars. I will explain later. I had one medium issue but that's it. Also, the covers for this entire series are breathtaking, I just wanted to put that out there.

We now have two POVs, which makes sense because we are not only expanding the story, but the country of Valgard and one of its seediest of places: The Blood Hive. Cistine and Ashe have been separated, but they have no time to process: there are emotional roller coasters to ride.

Cistine does what no normal princess does, and its also something I haven't seen many YA princesses do, which is visit the small towns of villages she is vowing to protect. Like the last book, she learns the value of hard work, and doubles down on her training with the cabal. The cabal is also my favorite part of this book, and dang it, does Dugan break my heart yet again at the end! TWICE! No spoilers here.

Meanwhile, Ashe is on her own. I personally feel she's at her best when she has someone to follow, like a princess or a captain, but her journey here is also the more fascinating part of the book. The Blood Hive is more intense than basically any other prison I've seen in a fantasy setting, and Dugan goes hard. She meets Aden, a disgraced former member of the cabal she hates so much, and they forge an unlikely friendship. Betrayal and action is inevitable in this gladiator-inspired sport.

I love Dugan and her books, but I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book (I did like the third book more than this one, but I will review it later). I have the dreaded ADHD brain, and whenever I deal with politics or plot points that I know for a fact will go very, very wrong later, reading becomes not fun. I feel that the choices Ashe made in the Blood Hive were realistic in her position, and maybe it was the pacing that made me feel this way, but I felt like her biggest motive was a little weak. As I said before, she's at her best when she has a leader, but since she was by herself, she had major growing pains trying to figure everything out. Thankfully, she does realize her mistakes and learns from them. I'm currently reading book 4 and wow, seeing her grow and improve is some of the best character development I've ever read. I'm also a big MalAshe stan and no one can take that away from me.

That said, the ending made me scream and buy book 3 IMMEDIATELY.

This book is necessary and heartbreaking, and I'm still upset. Thank you, Renee.

She’s done it again! This sequel is just as amazing as book one. The characters really made me feel things. Not only the main characters, but also all of the smaller characters! I received a copy of this book for early review!

**SPOILERS FOR BOOK ONE BELOW**

Where do I start. Okay.
Very few books have made me fall in love as hard and as fast as Dawnstar did. This flawless sequel to Darkwind introduces Asheila Kovar's POV, the fierce Warden to Princess Cistine of Talheim, whose story also continues in this book. (THAT'S RIGHT, MULTI-POV FANTASY, MY FAV)

Dawnstar is a story of reaching past your limits, of being thrown into danger and learning how to adapt and excel. Cistine's continuation of her journey to becoming a warrior and a queen is thrilling and exciting, with the stakes rising at every turn, and let's just say the romantic tension in this book will have you SCREAMING in fury (in the best way!). I love angst, and I was well fed in this book. Plus we get to revisit our favorite Valgardan found family and see where this journey takes them. Have I mentioned this cast is my favorite cast ever?

However, that said, Asheila Kovar is the true star of this book for me. Captured by ruthless Chancellor Salvotor and sent to a desert prison, Ashe is forced to use every ounce of her training and her mental prowess to keep herself alive, forging tenuous alliances of her own and doing all she can to make it back to her princess. Between the freaking coolest characters you'll ever meet, a gladiator aesthetic that kicks ass, and badass women coming into their own, Dawnstar is a wild and glorious ride from start to finish. It forever has my heart as one of my all-time favorite books.

The way this series has my heart. Dawnstar takes you through ALL the emotions. While reading this book I swooned over so many sweet moments, cried in public, and generally freaked out through suspenseful, tense, and revelatory scenes.

I know that by the end of the series Cistine will be one of my all time favorite female protagonists, and the cabal will be one of my favorite found families. The character writing in this series is top notch and more than compensates for slower moments in the plot. Like it would be so easy to hate Ashe for her choices in this book, but I can’t. That being said…Renee Dugan is not a kind author to her characters!

The angst and slow burn are everything I’ve ever wanted, plus there are multiple ships to root for, although romance takes a backseat to the action and politics. I just love this fantasy world!

Mild spoiler (I don't really think it's a spoiler but I'll hide it anyway to be safe):

AHHHHH.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

This series has taken another step in the right direction. A sequel I can get behind.

I loved the continued dynamic between this found family group. I love them. I love them SO MUCH. Everyone. All of them. I can’t wait to get more points of view because I need them all and I need them all to be happy.

The plot does a great balance of giving answers while maintaining some general mystery about the large scale story (since this is a seven book series). But don’t worry, this book takes you through ALL OF THE FEELINGS. I got misty eyed a few times towards the end, because how could you not?! The revelations and betrayals will make you hold your breath and push to finish as quickly as you can.

There’s a lot more I’d love to say, but in the effort to keep spoilers out, I shall not. JUST KNOW IT’S SO GOOD AND THIS SLOWBURN ROMANCE WILL BE THE END OF ME.

Overall audience notes:
- Fantasy
- Language: very little
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: high
- Trigger/Content Warnings: brief mentions of sexual assault and rape (recounted), loss of loved ones, avalanches, torture, whipping, kidnapping, battle scenes, grave injuries, major loss of life

DAWNSTAR is a triumphant second installment of Renee Dugan's STARCHASER SAGA. Following the perspectives of both Princess Cistine and her Warden, Ashe, we watch two women find and hold onto their strength for those they love. Cistine continues to grow from the soft, gossipy princess she was to a tough, persistent, and confident leader, even as danger lurks around every corner. Ashe must fight for her life - and the life of the princess she swore to protect - while making choices that have harmful ripple effects.

Diving back into the land of Valgard and the lives of the cabal I've come to love was an absolute treat, and after reading DAWNSTAR, I am itching for more. Book 2 in the STARCHASER SAGA will take you on a roller coaster of emotions and action, making you laugh, cry, gasp out loud, yell at the book, and so many other very appropriate book-reading responses. Renee Dugan's glittering descriptions of not only the places and action, but the very core of human emotion, is a writing style I can't get enough of. Do yourself a favor - buy this book.

Dawnstar was the perfect sequel to Dugan's Darkwind, and I am obsessed with the Starchaser Saga!
The best part of this book is the large cast of complex, well-rounded, beautifully flawed characters. I am a sucker for a good found family story, and while that was present in book one, it is elevated in Dawnstar.
My favorite character arc was Ashe and Aden's story. Ashe is so strong, dedicated, and fiercely loyal. Her journey through discovering her inner strength was so moving. As for the main storyline, it's brilliant. Princess Cistine continues to wow me with how multifaceted she is, and Thorne, her counterpart, balances her spunky optimism perfectly with his levelheaded passion.
The world of the Starchaser saga also grows in this book, giving me so much to look forward to for the rest of the series. I laughed, cried, snorted, and most importantly, couldn't put it down. It's easily in my top ten favorite books ever.
