On the day that Julius Gaius Caesar crossed the Rubicon to end the Roman republic, the witch women of the Ose tribe had a vision of the future, and what they saw terrified them. To protect the world, they allied with the new dictator of Rome. In return for destroying his enemies and securing his empire, he would allow a single djambe to serve at his side, to use her magic to guard against the encroaching chaos they knew would one day come.
Two hundred years later, Vesper has been chosen to serve as the emperor’s new hand, but first she must master her power, and herself, or fall victim to the encroaching darkness that she was meant to stand against.
Chosen is a prequel to The Last Witch of Rome. An exciting historical fantasy series set at the height of the Roman Empire.
Rhett's love for all things science fiction grew out of a Sunday morning family tradition of watching Star Trek re-runs on the cbc. His love of storytelling is the result of to many hours as a dungeon master trying to murder his players! He lives in Pincourt Canada with his wife, daughter, and a crazy calico named Maggie. If you like gritty, dark science fiction with deep characters you've found your author.
This is the first book I’ve read in this series. I read that perhaps the series should be read before the prequel. It was a bit slow to get started (to get me invested) but the last part grabbed my attention! The ending was the most dramatic and the first book starts at that high energy level. Although I’ve only read this and the first eight chapters of Apprentice, I see why folks love these books!
Chosen -A last witch of Rome novella- By Rhett Gervais
“It is time you learned your place in this world, for better or worse.” Beneath a blazing azure sky exists a cruel and unforgiving world. In Rome, empires may be dying, yet magic still flows in one girl’s veins, a force untapped, unguarded. But self-destruction is inevitable if this cannot be harnessed and controlled. The mercy of her nation depends upon her young shoulders. “You have so much potential, more than anyone I have ever met, yet you squander it like some Roman spilling wine.” This is just a taste of what is to become the makings of a young, reluctant warrior, a soul of hope forged in steel.
A very enjoyable story, I award it 4 stars.
Thank you Rhett Gervais for sharing your work with the Book Dragon.
Chosen is the promising start for the The Last Witch of Rome-series.
Rhett Gervais definitely has an interesting setting and worldbuilding: The story starts in a Roman-controlled African village and finally leads the main character Rome. Magic in different forms exists, but it only practiced by a chosen few. So this story is a blend of alternate history and fantasy with a bit coming-of-age.
I did not completely click with main character yet, but the potential is definitely there. This was a short, but very interesting glimpse into this world. I will definitely follow the story.
This is the beginning of the First Witch of Rome this novella tells the story of Vespa's beginning the death of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius and the coming to power of his crazy criminally insane son and the moving to Rome of Vespa. Vespa comes from Africa and is a young Ose witch after witnessing the destruction of her village and the killing of her Aunt she gets taken by the victors...She escapes and comes back to her village only to be taken by Roman Legionaires....So begins her life story in Rome. Her life in the Gladiator Arena is about to begin.
I got this a bit ago, but I believe this novella is free on Kindle Unlimited. I know the series is!
I LOVED this novella. The main character was a bit whiny but she was a child, but the history and magic is absolutely fantastic. The author built the world brick by brick, and I cannot wait to see how the series go. The diversity is definitely a plus.
I choose this rating of five, due to the storytelling that the author has. It kept my full attention all the way until the end. And wishing that I didn't read at so fast.
I don't want to give away spoilers since everything proposed in the beginning of the story is explained later. However enough detail is left out to keep one intrigued for the other books
Sometimes it’s easy to synonymously entwine things together. Personally, I go for PB&J ... but that’s totally irrelevant. Leaving that tangent behind let’s go for the Chosen One, in my essay “Reality Bites” (copyright 2006), I called her “She, who was born to each generation as its protector with good fashion sense, you go girl.”
And if you still don’t know who I’m talking about, I’ll tell you. This mesh in my mind thinks - Chosen One - equals- Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Though anyone familiar with the show knows that an odd set of circumstances created two additional ... Chosen Ones, plural. Okay. Moving on.
Rhett Gervais’ Chosen: A Last Witch of Rome Novella, tells the origin story of Vespa.
Following the footsteps of the likes of Buffy, Kendra and Faith, this teenage girl is destined to be the protector of her world. Calling on the power of the weave Vespa struggles and stumbles as she comes to terms with the truth the future holds for her.
Like her predecessors before her there will missteps but join me as I follow her into her journey as the last witch of Rome.
